• Software development magazines [closed]

  Ive spent the last hour or so browsing the web for professional development magazines. I am mostly interested in the java platform, agile methods, "programming in general" (tutorials on languages or whatever, "hot new stuff" etc) and software craftmanship. My best finding yet was pragpub and maybe MSDN magazine. I am willing to pay and have a Zinio account if anyone knows a magazine about programming that is distributed by them. Ive already browsed a couple of related threads here on stackexchange. ACM and IEEE does not seem relevant, as Im not interested in research articles. Maybe conferences like OOPSLA as somebody mentioned in another thread. PS. I prefer if they are in pdf or readable on kindle or a tablet. DS. BR Sebastian

• #altnetseattle in Closing

  So again, the #altnetseattle Conference easily was one of the most useful events of the year for me.  The amount of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that happen in just those two days often outweigh all the presentations I see at other conferences throughout the year.  The reason is simple, they are directed, to the point, and done with the ideal of open spaces.  This makes each session exhaustive on a particular topics.  Throw together some of the smartest people in the field and you have a bang up awesome energy and conversation. I got to talk about cloud computer, a little bit, and REST Architecture as sessions I kicked off myself.  Those were a blast.  I also got to meet a ton of other super talented like minded developers and engineers that are out there kicking the tires of .NET (and other languages/tech stacks like Ruby on Rails). Overall the conference rocked and I will definitely be coming back!  With that, I am headed home to Portland.

  I work on a team with a dozen men. They're great. I like them and all, but can't help wonder why it's so hard to find other technical women. I know they exist because I've met them at conferences, read their blogs, and see them on campus. My guess is there's something about our team that keeps them away. How can we recruit talented women without resorting to gimmicks? I'm not looking for complete gender parity, but why is it that some teams have a 50/50 gender split and ours is completely lopsided?

There are lots of my favorite speakers: Crockford, Uncle Bob, Damian Edwards, Venkat Subramanian, Hanselman (I’m interested in seeing if he still thinks “poop” is funny, or got that out of his system at TechEd ;), Cory House (hey, KC!), the .NET Rocks Guys and more, so check it out!

  As some of you already know, today is my last day at Scottrade. It has been a great place to work and I'll miss all the relationships I've formed over the last 5 years immensely! Starting Monday, I will be taking a new position at Amazon.com in Seattle. It should be an exciting new adventure and I look forward to sharing more about my experiences in the days to come! I do intend to continue blogging (after the move settles down) about C# as I'm able, and may mix in some Java as well as I rekindle (Amazon? Kindle? Get it? Okay, that was lame, I know...) my knowledge of the language for my new job responsibilities. I'll miss all the relationships I've developed with the .NET community in St. Louis and the surrounding area, and hope to come back sometime to participate in future Days of .NET conferences, if able!   Let's say you (or your company) have an amount of money that you would like to invest in improving your career, and probably make more money in the long run by landing a better job or raising your productivity. There are some classical investments that anyone would suggest: spend on programming books, since they pay for themselves very quickly; buy a better chair, since you will stay on that all day; attend conferences to improve your network of contacts. I'm looking for more examples to weigh my options in the quest for improvement. Google does not help as it only shows job ads for programmers in the financial sector.

  It occurred to me today that it might be useful to make a list of all the ways to earn money through either actual programming or just programming knowledge. I imagine it's probably a finite list as long as you stick to a reasonable level of granularity. Here's what I have so far: Trading your time for money (i.e. having a job or being a freelancer) Building your own software product (a full-fledged startup or a tiny mobile app or whatever) Giving talks at conferences and meetups Teaching students in a classroom Writing a book or blog (these are products, but non-software products) I've probably missed at least a few. What else is there? (I'm not sure whether this is an appropriate question, by the way. I think I would select the best answer based on how practical/original/interesting/numerous your suggestions are.)

  The below code works in Delphi 2007, but it gives me this error in Delphi 2010: --------------------------- Error --------------------------- Cannot load oci.dll library (error code 127). The oci.dll library may be missing from the system path or you may have an incompatible version of the library installed. --------------------------- OK Details >> --------------------------- The exception is raised when I set "connected" to "true". I have tried placing a copy of "oci.dll" in the same folder as the .exe file, but I get the same message. I also get this message when using the form designer and a visible TSQLConnection component. • EJB3 - @Column(insertable="false") question

  Hi All, I'm building a J2SE application with EJB3 and an Oracle Express Edition DB. My problem is like that - I set an EntityBean in my project which matches a table in the DB. The table contains a column which is not nullable and has a default value. All I want is that when persisting a new data to this table using the EJB, the column's value will get its default value. This is how I set it in the project: //holds user's first name @Basic(optional = true) @Column(name = "FIRST_NAME", insertable = false, updatable = true, nullable = false) private String m_firstName; I also set it in the ORM.XML file: <basic name="firstName"> <column name="FIRST_NAME" insertable="false" updatable="true" nullable="false"/> </basic> But for some reason, when creating a new EntityBean and not setting the first name field, and then trying to persist it, i get the following exception: Exception [TOPLINK-4002] (Oracle TopLink Essentials - 2.1 (Build b60e-fcs (12/23/2008))): oracle.toplink.essentials.exceptions.DatabaseException Internal Exception: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01400: cannot insert NULL into ("TSDB"."USERS"."FIRST_NAME") Which means that the persistence manager tries to insert the first name field although I told it not to. Am I doing something wrong here ? Thanks!
