  Hi, I am trying to complete the picture of how the PC and the OS interacts together. And I am at point, where I am little out of guess when it comes to device drivers. Please, don´t write things like its too complicated, or you don´t need to know when using high programming laguage and winapi functions. I want to know, it´s for study purposes. So, the very basic structure of how OS and PC (by PC I mean of course HW) is how I see it is that all other than direct CPU commands, which can CPU do on itself (arithmetic operation, its registers access and memory access) must pass thru OS. Mainly becouse from ring level 3 you cannot use in and out intructions which are used for acesing other HW. I know that there is MMIO,but it must be set by port comunication first. It was not like this all the time. Even I am bit young to remember MSDOS, I know you could access HW directly, becouse there ws no limitation, no ring mode. So you could to write string to diplay use wheather DOS function, or directly acess video card memory and write it by yourself. But as OS developed, there is no longer this possibility. But it is fine, since OS now handles all the HW comunication, and frankly it more convinient and much more safe (I would say the only option) in multitasking environment. So nowdays you instead of using int instructions to use BIOS mapped function or DOS function you call dll which internally than handles everything you don´t need to know about. I understand this. I also undrstand that device drivers is the piece of code that runs in ring level 0, so it can do all the HW interactions. But what I don´t understand is connection between OS and device driver. Let´s take a example - I want to make a sound card make a sound. So I call windows API to acess sound card, but what happens than? Does windows call device drivers to do so? But if it does call device driver, does it mean, that all device drivers which can be called by winAPI function, must have routines named in some specific way? I mean, when I have new sound card, must its drivers have functions named same as the old one? So Windows can actually call the same function from its perspective? But if Windows have predefined sets of functions requored by device drivers, that it cannot use new drivers that doesent existed before last version of OS came out. Please, help me understand this mess. I am really getting mad. Thanks.

• Architectural Design for a Data-Driven Silverlight WP7 app

  I have a Silverlight Windows Phone 7 app that pulls data from a public API. I find myself doing much of the same thing over and over again: In the UI, set a loading message or loading progress bar in place of where the content is Get the content, which may be already in memory, cached in isolated file storage, or require an HTTP request If the content can not be acquired (no network connection, etc), display an error message If the content is acquired, display it in the UI Keep the content in main memory for subsequent queries The content that is displayed to the user can be taken directly from a data source, such as an ObservableCollection, or it may be a query on a data source. I would like to factor out this repetitive process into a framework where ideally only the following needs to be specified: Where to display the content in the UI The UI elements to show while loading, on failure, and on success The URI of the HTTP request How to parse the HTTP response into the data structure that will kept in memory The location of the file in isolated storage, if it exists How to parse the file contents into the data structure that will be kept in memory It may sound like a lot, but two strings, three FrameworkElements, and two methods is less than the overhead that I currently have. Also, this needs to work for however the data is maintained in memory, and needs to work for direct collections and queries on those collections. My questions are: Has something like this already been implemented? Are my thoughts about the topic above fundamentally wrong in some way? Here is a design I'm thinking of: There are two components, a View and a Model. The View is given the FrameworkElements for loading, failure, and success. It is also given a reference to the corresponding Model. The View is a UserControl that is placed somewhere in the UI. The Model a class that is given the URI for the data, a method of how to parse the data, and optionally a filename and how to parse the file. It is responsible for retrieving the data and notifying the View whenever the current status (loading/fail/success) changes. If the data downloaded from the network is different from the cache, the network data takes precedence. When the app closes or is tombstoned, the model writes the data to the cache. How does that sound?

• Application not showing up in Google Play for 4.x devices

  I recently posted about the Play store not letting me publish my app without a minSdkVersion, but whenever I set it to anything above "1" my app just doesn't work (minSdkVersion breaking program). So this guy suggested to just set my minSdkVersion to 1, which worked. But now when I submitted my app even though the developer site says: API level: 1-16+ Supported screens: normal-xlarge OpenGL textures: all But the app only shows it supports Android under 4.x, I developed it on my 4.0.4 device. I tried searching around and I found that some people have problems with services messing up the phones it supports, so I deleted all of my services, because I don't really need any for this version of the app to submit. And it still didn't work. So I don't know what else to do, here is my AndroidManifest.xml if it helps... I've been trying to figure out why my application isn't working for a week now, still nothing. I have tried setting a targetSdkVersion to something like 14, my application still breaks. I cleaned out my code, taking everything out of the already short, 200 lines, application, and it still isn't working. Is there something I can't use in an android application 4.0 that I am using in my application? or is it just my AndroidManifest? When I did the same on my phone, Galaxy Note, it opened in the Google Play Store, but then said "Not compatible." Why? They are both on the same version of OS. • How to add Items to GridView in C# Windows Store App (Win8)

  To keep things simple let's just say I have a c# Windows Store Project for Windows 8 that has the following items: GridView (PlatformsGrid) List«PlatformSearchResult» (allPlatforms) DataTemplate (PlatformDataTemplate) in standardstyles.xaml allPlatforms is a collection of "PlatformSearchResult"objects populated from an online API, and has the following 3 properties: ID Name Alias I am able to add a new item to the gridview for each object that exists in my allPlatforms collection, however the items are blank and do not show the data from my objects. • User control events not getting to their handlers

• Identifying if a user is in the local administrators group

  My Problem I'm using PInvoked Windows API functions to verify if a user is part of the local administrators group. I'm utilizing GetCurrentProcess, OpenProcessToken, GetTokenInformationand LookupAccountSid to verify if the user is a local admin. GetTokenInformation returns a TOKEN_GROUPS struct with an array of SID_AND_ATTRIBUTES structs. I iterate over the collection and compare the user names returned by LookupAccountSid. My problem is that, locally (or more generally on our in-house domain), this works as expected. The builtin\Administrators is located within the group membership of the current process token and my method returns true. On another domain of another developer the function returns false. The LookupAccountSid functions properly for the first 2 iterations of the TOKEN_GROUPS struct, returning None and Everyone, and then craps out complaining that "A Parameter is incorrect." What would cause only two groups to work correctly? The TOKEN_GROUPS struct indicates that there are 14 groups. I'm assuming it's the SID that is invalid. Everything that I have PInvoked I have taken from an example on the PInvoke website. The only difference is that with the LookupAccountSid I have changed the Sid parameter from a byte[] to a IntPtr because SID_AND_ATTRIBUTESis also defined with an IntPtr. Is this ok since LookupAccountSid is defined with a PSID? • Figuring out QuadCurveTo's parameters

  Could you guys help me figuring out QuadCurveTo's 4 parameters , I tried to find information on http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/api/javafx/scene/shape/QuadCurveTo.html, but it's hard for me to understand without picture , I search on google about 'Quadratic Bezier' but it shows me more than 2 coordinates, I'm confused and blind now. I know those 4 parameters draw 2 lines to control the path , but how we know/count exactly which coordinates the object will throught by only knowing those 2 path-controller. • makecontext segfault?

  I am working on a homework assignment that will be due in the next semester. It requires us to implement our own context switching/thread library using the ucontext API. The professor provides code that does it, but before a thread returns, he manually does some work and calls an ISR that finds another thread to use and swapcontexts to it or if none are left, exits. The point of the assignment is to use the uc_link field of the context so that when it hits a return it takes care of the work. I've created a function (type void/void args) that just does the work the functions did before (clean up and then calls ISR). The professor said he wanted this. So all that's left is to do a makecontext somewhere along the way on the context in the uc_link field so that it runs my thread, right? Well, when I do makecontext on seemingly any combination of ucontext_t's and function, I get a segfault and gdb provides no help.. I can skip the makecontext and my program exist 'normally' when it hits a return in the threads I created because (presumably) the uc_link field is not properly setup (which is what I'm trying to do). I also can't find anything on why makecontext would segfault. • Load php file wth xml header

  I have a php file with an xml header and xml code, named test.php. How do I load this file as an xml? The following doesn't work: $xml = simplexml_load_file('test.php'); echo $xml; I just get a white page. The test file is saved as php, as it's dynamic. It's loading data from the tradedoubler api. • Terminating a long-executing thread and then starting a new one in response to user changing parameters via UI in an applet

  I have an applet which creates music using the JFugue API and plays it for the user. It allows the user to input a music phrase which the piece will be based on, or lets them choose to have a phrase generated randomly. I had been using the following method (successfully) to simply stop and start the music, which runs in a thread using the Player class from JFugue. Basically, the idea is to make it simulate "real time" adjustments to the generated music for the user. Well, I have been beating my head against the wall on this for a couple of weeks. I've read all the standard java documentation, researched, read, and searched forums, and I have tried many different ideas, none of which have succeeded. The problem I've run into with all approaches I've tried is that when I start the new thread with the new, updated musical pattern, all the old threads ALSO start, and there is a cacophony of unintelligible noise instead of my desired output. From what I've gathered, the issue seems to be that all the methods I've come across require that the thread is able to periodically check the value of a "flag" variable and then shut itself down from within its "run" block in response to that variable. However, since my thread makes a call that takes several minutes minimum to execute (playing the music), and I need to terminate it WHILE it is executing this, there is really no safe way to do so. So, I'm wondering if there is something I'm missing when it comes to threads, or if perhaps I can accomplish my goal using a totally different approach. Any ideas or guidance is greatly appreciated! • How to fix Ogre3d segfault with std::_Rb_tree_insert_and_rebalance ?

  Hello all. I'm working on a 3d music visualizer using Ogre3d, basically it's a spectrum analizer, a lot like the old xmms plugin: (http)://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6NKBiwYN24 It works well, the bars are drawn and updated, there are no framerate issues, but it crashes randomly. Sometimes it can run without problems, finish the song, other times it crashes instantly, other times the music just stops, without a crash. Would limiting the framerate help ? The crashes are seemingly random. Is it a performance issue ?
