• Programming as a minor

  Hello Everyone! I've never asked a question here at programmers, and for reasons which will become obvious later I've never answered one here, but I do poke around in short bursts. Anyway, I'm 15 right now, and I've been programming in C++ for 4 years, just working on my own projects that are aim so high as to never be finished. I've been working on a single project for the last year, and every 3 months, I add a new system into it. It might be a value tabling directory enabled log system, or a render system, or a class to load up xml files, whatever it is, I don't mind too much that the overall project (a 3d engine) isn't ever going to get finished, I just get some satisfaction from getting what I have done building and running. I don't know what I want to do when I grow up, although I suspect I'll go into some form of engineering, but I was interested in knowing if I do choose to go into a career as a developer, what kind of material I could look at to push myself up and get myself experience that might help my career later. I'm not talking about books in particular, I'm more interested in subjects areas that will get me access to good job opportunities, or that will give me a hand-up if I do computer science and software related courses at uni. One of the things I was thinking of doing was designing some of the logic gate components of a small computer - which I started briefly over the holidays, working out integer addition, subtraction and multiplication. That kind of stuff interests me, but is it really useful - or more useful then just more programming? But anyway, Any advice? Should I continue on my perpetual 3d engine? Are there any other projects or particular accomplishments that would help my education? Perhaps I should mention that I live in Perth, Australia, so local software companies are likely to be more scarce then usual.

• Why no fortran standard library ?

  To be a language focused on mathematics and scientific computing, I am always baffled by the total lack of useful mathematical routines in the Fortran standard library. One would expect it to be shipped at least with a routine to compute standard deviation and mean, but this is not the case. In particular with the introduction of Fortran 90 and the addition of modules (thus reducing namespace pollution), I don't see any reason why of this critical lack of services. I would like to hear your knowledge about why this is the case.

• Mexico leading in Business Transformation Strategies:

  By John Burke Group Vice President Oracle Applications Business Unit     I recently completed a business tour in Mexico, and was surprised by both the economic vibrancy of the country and the thought leadership expressed by many of the customers I met.  An example of the economic vibrancy of the country: across the street from my hotel was the local Bentley dealership, Coach Store, Yves Saint Laurent and of course a Starbucks.  I only made it to Starbucks.  Both the Coach Store and YSL had a line of folks waiting to get in... As for thought leadership, there were several illustrations only on the first day. I had the opportunity to meet with a branch of the Mexican Federal Government. Their questions were not about clerical task automation, far from it! We discussed citizen on-line access to fees and services - for example looking up the duty on an international goods shipment, or tracking that my taxes have been received, or the status of my request for a certain service.  Eligibility, policies and status.  Having an integrated rules or policy automation system that would allow businesses and citizens to access accurate information and ensure the proper collection of fees and payment for 3rd party provided services.    Then in the afternoon, I met with the owner of a roofing company (note: most roofs in Mexico are flat and made of cement).  This CEO started discussing how he wanted to transform his business from a cement products company to a service company and market 5-10-15 year service contracts which would guarantee the structural integrity of the roof and of course that the roof would remain waterproof.  Although his products were guaranteed, they required an annual inspection and most home owners never schedule that inspection until it is too late and water damage has occurred.  These emergency calls reduce his margin and reduce customer satisfaction.  This lead to a discussion of business models in general and why long term differentiation can only come from service, not just for the music or news industries, but also for roofing companies!    I completely agreed with the transformational concepts described in both meetings and quickly understood why there is a Bentley dealership near my hotel.

• Natively boot Virtualbox Image

  I am faced with a Windows hardware/software problem left over from another person. It's on me to resolve. It's a mission critical setup. The situation is: I've got a physical server machine with: -Disk C:\ (one disk) containing a basic install of Windows Server 2008 R2, formerly Win Vista Pro, now gone. -Disk D:\ (software Raid) containing a VirtualBox disk image of a configured Windows Server 2008 R2 running SQL Server R2 among others. What shall I do now? Migrate all the stuff from the configured VM to the basic but natively installed C:\ Windows Server 2008 R2 (with the possibility of breaking stuff)? Or, Setting up the machine to "natively boot" the VM with the help of bcdedit.exe (something I've read about, what I've never done, what I don't know of if it works, if it hits performance, or if it is stable for production) For me, being old skool, I am in the process of de-virtualising everything (option 1). But I'd be happy if someone suggests I am ok to go down the "natively boot" route.

• Triple ghost animated cursor

  Since installing the driver for Intuos 4 Graphics tablet, animated cursors display as a triple ghost cursor. I cannot find any reference to this problem elsewhere. System specifications: new Dell XPS, Windows 7, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670. Graphics tablet and graphics software are virtually useless since the cursor hotspot is nearly impossible to identify. All drivers and software are current. Any thoughts? Vendors deny any knowledge or responsibility. Removing the Intuos driver does not fix this.

  When I previously asked what's responsible for slow software, a few answers I've received suggested it was a social and management problem: This isn't a technical problem, it's a marketing and management problem.... Utimately, the product mangers are responsible to write the specs for what the user is supposed to get. Lots of things can go wrong: The product manager fails to put button response in the spec ... The QA folks do a mediocre job of testing against the spec ... if the product management and QA staff are all asleep at the wheel, we programmers can't make up for that. —Bob Murphy People work on good-size apps. As they work, performance problems creep in, just like bugs. The difference is - bugs are "bad" - they cry out "find me, and fix me". Performance problems just sit there and get worse. Programmers often think "Well, my code wouldn't have a performance problem. Rather, management needs to buy me a newer/bigger/faster machine."   Possible Duplicate: How is software deployed via Active Directory? I have trying to deploy a programs, mapped network drives and taks schedule job. I didn't manage to start a script on log on PC until I did it in Default Domain Policy. But when I did that I have installed programs on my server too. And mapped network drives, etc. So I don't know how to manage to do all of that but not to install anything on server over GPO. I still didn't manage to deploy a schedule task job on clients. I manage to put it on server bit not on clients. I need that schedule task because I need to update software on clients every week. I can't manual update flash player, adobe reader, firefox, etc on clients. And People useing client PC even doesn't know how to do it if they have abillity. Clients doesn't have admin rights.

  If you’re using external hard drives with your Windows Home Server, they might get unplugged and create an error. Here we look at running the Repair Wizard to quickly fix the issue. If an external drive that is included in your drive pool becomes unplugged or loses power, you might see the following error under Home Network Health when opening the WHS Console. To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly and click Repair. The wizard launches and you’ll need to agree that you may lose data during the repair of the backup database. In this example it was a simple problem where an external drive became unplugged from the server…so you can close out of the wizard. If you look under Server Storage you can see the drive is missing…To fix the issue verify the drive has power and is plugged in correctly. WHS will add the drive back into the pool and when finished you’ll see it listed as healthy and good to go. Using external drives that are part of your storage pool may not be the best way to have your home built WHS setup, but if you do, expect occasional errors such as this. • How to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7?

  I can't seem to find a way to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7. Unfortunately I had installed a download manager (GetRight) which by default creates a tray icon for each download. I quickly disabled this but still have a ton of entries in that menu and it's annoying. I found an article that had me navigate to this key in the registry... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify delete IconStreams and PastIconStreams, then restart, but it did not clear the list. Any ideas on this one?

  Xvideo service thief is an application that allows you to download and convert youtube videos into .avi format. The problem is when it tries to convert the .flv into a .avi. The audio in the video is not being played when you try to play the video. But the .flv works fine. I have also enabled Intel(R) speedstep feature in my processor(Pentium Dual core E5200) to decrease the power consumed by the processor with the help of Granola software. What might be the reason for the audio less video converter by xvideo service thief? Could it be the enabling of intel(R) speedstep? Because the software works fine when its not enabled. Is this possible?That the output some applications can be altered when enabling this processor feature?

• Drivers for Quick Cam pro 9000 on Windows 7

  I have a Logitect Quick Cam Pro 9000 that I want to install on my Windows 7 installation. The user manual specifies that I have to install the software before I install the camera. But my experience is that software from hardware vendors tend to decrease computer performance, so I was wondering if this camera will work by only plugging it in and letting Windows 7 find and install the drivers for it. I could've just tried installing it of course, but again, hardware vendors are notorius for fucking up things, and I wouldn't want to make it impossible to install the camera by doing things in the wrong order, hence the question here on SuperUser because I assume somebody is more knowledgeable than me on this subject.

• Internet Explorer 6 Encountered An Error ntl.dll Issue on XP and Win2000

  As we have some PC's still running Windows 2000 and this is beyond our control we use IE 6 so we can keep the IE platform standard. Recently on some XP and Win2000 PCs IE has been crashing with the Encountered a Problem and Needs to close do you want to send a message to Microsoft error when entering some sites. This happens even after a format reinstall with minimal software load (Office 2000, some avaya software, kaspersky, tapiex.dll). The module pointed to in the error report is ntl.dll. There are lots of reports over the net of the problem but has anyone resolved this issue? (Latest IE6 updates are installed). Also please note there were no 3rd party IE addons, spyware, viruses or adware Hope someone can help.
