  • How to set up mysql storage for certain rsyslog input matches?

    I'm draining various logs from Heroku to an rsyslog linux (ubuntu) server and am starting to have a little more to bite off than I can chew in terms of working with my log histories. I am needing to be able drill back in time based on more flexible details and more flexible access than what the standard syslog file(s) provide. I'm thinking that logging to mysql may be the correct approach, but how do I set this up such that it pulls only certain log entries into a table based on an identified? For example, I see a long hex string identifying each log entry from a certain Heroku app instance. I assume that I can just pipe those into the mysql socket vs ALL rsyslog input into mysql... Could someone please direct me to a resource that can walk me through the process of setting something like this up or simply provide some details that can help? I have 15+ years of Unix experience so I just need some nudging in the right direction as I've not really done a tremendous amount of work with syslog daemons previously in terms of pooling various servers into one. Additionally, I'd be interested in any log review tools that could make drilling through log arrangements like this more handy for developers.

  • Unable to install Xdebug

    I've registered xdebug in php.ini (as per http://xdebug.org/docs/install) but it's not showing up when i run "php -m" or when i get a test page to run "phpinfo()". I've just installed the latest version of XAMPP. Can anyone provide any suggestions in getting xdebug to show up? Hopefully, this tool would be free for commercial usage, but we're not closed to commercial tools. Update: 4 hours of research allowed me to find very few free tools. Looks like bugzilla isn't popular in agile teams! And obviously, it's not the best fit.

I know how to use the command line, but it is slow and as a visual person, I prefer graphical interfaces. So I connected with nautilus via ssh and was now able to browse the directories graphically. But my permissions are just those of "other", so I cannot do much without o+rwx. What tools do you use to do setup and administrate your servers? Should I write code locally rather then directly on the server and rsync it? EDIT: It is NOT a production server, I am simply fiddling around there.

    I have installed perl and pm_dbdmysql perl module on solaris-10. I have a perl script which makes the mysql DB connection to a diff server and runs some queries and returns the results.     I have an internal web application that has recently gone through a major version upgrade. I would like to monitor this application over the weekend and look for 'soft' errors. I will still need to spot check things by hand, but there are some common failure patterns that I think I can automate. Examples include data with bad formatting, blank rows in tables (indicates missing non-critical data), patterns for identifiers ("TEST" means one of my devs left a testing feed on), etc. I think there are applications out there that can be scripted to do things like: 1. log in 2. Go to $URL 3. select 3rd link in $LIST or $PATTERN 4. Check HTML from that link for $PATTERNS 5. Email report Are these goals sane? What applications/tools can help with this?

I click on it, look around ... then I look again at my page, and the problem is fixed! This makes debugging pretty difficult...     Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

    I have a MS SQL database that has been running strong for 10+ years. I'd like to diagram the database structure, without spending hours laying it all out in Visio or something similar... I've seen nice models diagrammed before, but I have no idea how they were created. From what I've seen - those models were created in advance of the database itself to assist in clarifying the relationships... but my database already exists! Anyone have any suggestions for tools that would work, or methods I could employ to tease out a nice clean document describing my database structure? Thanks in advance!

  • On Windows 7, how can I tell if a recording is multi-channel without third party tools? [migrated]

    A customer has an audio that is confidential and can't send it to me. He also would not like to install other tools. He has a basic Windows 7 install. Is there any way to tell whether the recording is one channel or two channel? Normally, I would just get the audio and soxi it. Or, I would tell him to install Audacity or equivalent sound editor and open it up. I also thought that if you right clicked and looked at the size, bit rate, and length, you could get number of channels but bit rate already factors in number of channels. Sorry I'm not giving you a lot to work with.
