  • Windows PE - Where and how are strings stored if not in resources?

    Usually strings (like content/titles of dialog boxes) in .exe files are stored in some sort of resources. But in some recent exes I disassembled/resource-inspected I couldn't find any resources containing the string but it was somehow hardcoded with db's into the program source code. How can I extract and modify strings directly located in the program? I assume those are just the equivalent to const char*s in C++? Why would someone not "outsource" the contents of dialog boxes, menus, etc?

    I am trying to create JSF 2 pages. When I create pages using facelets template I get message on top that "The project is not configured for Facelets yet. You need to add a Facelets runtime to the project's classpath".   • Creating a music catalog in C# and extracting first 30 seconds as soon as the first words are sung

    I already read a question: Separation of singing voice from music. I don’t need this complex audio processing. I only need some detection mechanism that would detect that there is some voice/vocal playing while the music is playing (or not playing) I need to extract first 30 seconds when a vocalist starts singing along with full band music. See question 2 below. I want to create a music catalog using ASP.NET MVC 2 and Silverlight clients and C#.NET 4.0 programming language that would be front store. On the backend I would also like to create a desktop WPF/Windows application to create the music catalog from already existing music files, most of which have metadata in them ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, iTunes MP4, WMA, Vorbis Comments and APE Tags etc. I would possibly like to create a web service that would allow catalog contributors to upload a zipped album and trigger metadata extraction of music data and extraction of music segments as described below. I would be happy if I achieve no. 1 below. Let's say I have 1000ths of songs in mp3 (or other formats) grouped in subfolders using some classification (Genre, Artists, Albums, Composers or other groupings). I want to create tables in DB that would organize songs so they can be searched based on different criteria (year, length, above classification or by song title, description etc) like what iTune store allows to their customers. I want to extract metadata from various formats (I will try to get songs in mp3 format, but there may be other popular formats) and allow music Catalog manager person to add missing data from either desktop or web applications. He or other contributors can upload zipped music via an HTML or Silverlight upload or WPF. Can anybody suggest open source libraries, articles, code snippets that can do that in an automatic way using .NET and possibly SQL Server DB? My main questions are these. This is an audio processing challenge. I want to extract 2 segments of music (questions 1 and 2): 1. How to extract a music segment: 1-2 seconds before a vocal starts singing and up to 30 seconds from that point in time and 2. Much more challenging is to find repeating segments (One would usually find or recognize the names of the songs and songs are usually known by these refrains. How would I go about creating a list of songs that go great together like what Genius from iTune does? Is there any characteristics of music that can be used to match songs? The goal is for people quickly scan and recognize songs i.e. associate melody, words with a title/album so they can make intelligent decisions like buying a song, create similar mood songs.   • what's an effective way to build a csproj file in code?

    I'd like to avoid a command line for this. I've been using the MSBuild API ( Microsoft.Build.Framework and Microsoft.Build.BuildEngine) with code that looks like this: this.buildEngine = new Engine(); BuildPropertyGroup props = new BuildPropertyGroup(); props.SetProperty("Configuration", "Debug"); this.buildEngine.RegisterLogger(this.logger); Project proj = new Project(this.buildEngine); proj.LoadXml(this.projectFileAndPath, ProjectLoadSettings.None); this.buildEngine.BuildProject(proj, "Build"); However I've run into enough problems that I can't find answers for that I'm really wondering if I'm doing this right. First, I can't find the output (there's no bin directory in any of the places where I figured the dll's would end up). Second, I tried building a project that I had made in VS2008 and the line proj.LoadXml( fails for invalid xml encoding. But of course the xml file is valid, since VS2008 can build it (I checked). At this point I'm beginning to wonder if I've picked up some code that's way out of date or a methodology that's been superseded by something else. Opinions?

    Hi, I am currently writing an XML parser that parses a lot of data, with a lot of different nodes (the XML isn't designed by me, and I have no control over the content...) Anyway, it currently takes an unacceptably long time to download and read in (about 13 seconds) and so I'm looking for ways to increase the efficiency of the read. I've written a function to create hash values, so that the program no longer has to do a lot of string comparison (just NSUInteger comparison), but this still isn't reducing the complexity of the read in... So I thought maybe I could create an array of IMPs so that, I could then go something like: for(int i = 0; i < [hashValues count]; i ++) { if(currHash == [[hashValues objectAtIndex:i] unsignedIntValue]) { [impArray objectAtIndex:i]; } } Or something like that. The only problem is that I don't know how to actually make the call to the IMP function? I've read that I perform the selector that an IMP defines by going IMP tImp = [impArray objectAtIndex:i]; tImp(self, @selector(methodName)); But, if I need to know the name of the selector anyway, what's the point? Can anybody help me out with what I want to do? Or even just some more ways to increase the efficiency of the parser...

  • Flex 3: should I provide prepared data to my component or make it to process data before display?

    I'm starting to learn a little Flex just for fun and maybe to prove that I still can learn something new :) I have some idea for a project and one of its parts is a tree component which could display data in different ways depending on configuration. The idea There is list of objects having properties like id, date, time, name, description. And sometimes list should be displayed like this: first level: date second level: time third level: name and sometimes like this: first level: year second level: month third level: day fourth level: time and name By level I mean level of nesting of course. So, we can have years, that have months, that have days, that have hours and so forth. The problem What could be the best way to do it? I mean, should I prepare data for different ways of nesting outside of component or even outside of flex? I can do it at web service level in C# where I plan to have database access layer and send to flex nice and ready to display XML or array of objects. But I wonder if that won't cause additional and maybe unneccessary network traffic. I tried to hack some code in my component to convert my data objects into XML or ArrayCollection but I don't know enough of Flex and got stuck on elimination of duplicates or getting specific data by some key value. Usually to do such things I have STL with maps, sets and vectors and I find Flex arrays and even Dictionary a little bit confusing (I've read language reference and googled without any significant luck). The question So, to sum things up: should I give my tree component data prepared just for chosen type of display or should I try to do it internally inside component (or some helper class written in ActionScript)?

  • What options to parse a DTD using PHP

    I need to parse DTDs using PHP and am hoping there's a simple library to help out. Each DTD has numerous <!ENTITY... and <!-- Comment... elements, which I need to act upon. Note that I do not need to validate anything against these DTDs, simply parse them as data files themselves. A few options I've looked at: James Clarke's SD, which is an option of last resort, but I'd like to avoid the complexity of building/installing/configuring code external to PHP. I'm not sure it's even possible in my situation. PEAR has an XML_DTD_Parser, which requires installing/configuring PEAR and a number of pear modules, which I'm also not sure is possible, and would rather avoid. Has anyone used it with success? PHP XML Classes has the class_path_parser, which another site suggested, but it fails to read ENTITY elements. It appears to be using PHP's built in XML parsing capabilities, which use EXPAT. PHP's DOMDocument will validate against a DTD, so must be able to read them, though I don't see how to get at the DTD parser directly at first glance.

    I am overriding the onCreateDialog and onPrepareDialog methods or the Dialog class. I have followed the example from Reto Meier's Professional Android Application Development book, Chapter 5 to pull some XML data and then use a dialog to display the info. The error still occurs even when I tell my activity to ignore screen orientation in the manifest. So I presume something has been left out of the example in the book do I need to override another method to save my variables in or something?

  • What issues to consider when rolling your own data-backend for Silverlight / AJAX on non-ASP.NET ser

    I have read-only Silverlight and AJAX apps which read static text and XML files from a PHP/Apache server, which works very nicely with features such as asynchronous loading, lazy-loading only what I need for each page, loading in the background, developed a little query language to get a PHP script to create custom XML files etc. it's pragmatic read-only REST, and all works fast and fine for read-only sites. Now I want to also add the ability to write data from these apps to a database on the same PHP/Apache server. For those of you who have built similar data-access layers, what do I need to consider while building this, especially regarding security so that not just any client can write and alter my database, e.g.: check HTTP_USER_AGENT for security check REMOTE_ADDR for security require a special code for security, perhaps a list of TAN codes (such as banks use for online transactions) each which can only be used once, both the client and server have these I wonder if there is some kind of standard REST query I should lean on for e.g. building SQL-like statements in the URL parameters, e.g. http://www.thedatalayersite.com/query?insertinto=customers&... Any thoughts, notes from experience, ideas, gotchas, especially ideas on tightening down security in this endeavor would be helpful.

    Hello there. I have an existing class that has methods to deserialise from XML in my code. Now I need to create correct CoreData model from that class. It's objects will be created not only from CoreData storage but also by deserializing XML (somehow like instance->title = [[NSString stringWithUTF8String: (const char *)subNode->children->content] retain; ) without saving to CoreData, and sometimes I need to save it. What is the correct steps to modify existing class to do that except of adding CoreData framework and making my class an NSManagedObject instead of NSObject?     Hi, I am migrating my db from Interbase to Firebird, and the 1st hiccup we hit comes from our stored proc names. We have a handful of stored procedures with names greater than 31 characters (which appears to be the max in FB 2.1.3) Is there a way to increase this limitation? It will be a far easier solution than modifying our software. Thanks!
