• Partnering with a web designer to build and launch websites for fun. Where should I look for someone? [closed]

  I have been working with web sites and web development for a long time and as a result I am able to build and launch complex websites (social network, dating site, stackoverflow, etc.) in little time (1-3 weeks). Problem is: I know very little about CSS, page layout, photoshop and graphic design. Of course I know HTML but when it comes to putting together something that looks good I am horrible. I just don't have the artistic skills. I wanted to launch some websites without any silly or naive intent to take over the world. Just for fun and to improve the portfolio. How do you guys recommend that I approach this problem of "finding this right partner" with the same mindset? Where should I look for this person? I have no idea... :(

• Skype, green screen, no microphone

  I have issues with skype using my brand new System 76 Galago Ultrapro, running Ubuntu 13.04. I installed Skype through ubuntu software centre (after allowing Canonical partner stuff), but it won't work, the video is a green screen, and it won't connect to the microphone. The webcam works when using Cheese, and the microphone appears to work in general (it shows sound levels when I go to the Input tab under the Sound settings). I tried to fix the green screen issue using this command: $ echo -e '#!bin/bash n LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /usr/bin/skype' | sudo tee /usr/local/bin/skype sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/skype as suggested here: http://debianhelp.wordpress.com/2012/09/28/to-do-list-after-installing-ubuntu-13-04-aka-raring-ringtail-operating-system/ but no luck. Any ideas? I have also asked this question to the System 76 tech support folk.

  I just reinstalled a fresh 12.04 because I couldn't even get booted on my previous installation anymore. I just installed 8GB of ram on this laptop, but the problem happened even before this, and all I have installed in this run on Ubuntu is: ia32libs, Oracle JDK7 and the 32bit JRE junipernc jupiter The laptop has never been used very heavily, so could someone get back to me on this, let me know what further information you need about my machine, or files to upload.   What's the difference between MariaDB and MySQL? I'm not very familiar with both. I'm primarily a front end developer for the most part. Are they syntactically similar? Where do these two query languages differ? Wikipedia only mentions the difference between licensing: MariaDB is a community-developed branch of the MySQL database, the impetus being the community maintenance of its free status under GPL, as opposed to any uncertainty of MySQL license status under its current ownership by Oracle.

• Package information was last updated 59 days ago even though Ubuntu is up to date

  I'm using ubuntu 11.10 and in the update manager I have a message that says package information last updated 59 days ago press the check button to check for software updates I do that, but i'm up to date. I checked other threads with this same problem, and saw i should do sudo apt-get update in a terminal to see which repository is not up to date and when I did, I got this message: Failed to fetch http://extras.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/oneiric/Release Then I checked for this repository in software sources but couldn't find this specific one. In my /etc/apt/sources.list.d I have only one line: deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu oneiric partner #Added by software-center So now I don't know what to do more. Should I upgrade to 12.04 and will it solve my problem? I wouldn't want to upgrade if there is a problem in the last version but I don't know much about Ubuntu so, can anyone help me please? • Adobe-Flash-plugin freezes when skipping ahead

  I am using Firefox 7 and the new official Adobe Flash 64-bit plugin from the Ubuntu Partner repository. It's the adobe-flash package. It works nicely on the first look but when I try to skip ahead in any YouTube video (by clicking on the video progress bar) sound will go on but the video simply freezes at the position it was just before skipping. This is really annoying because I really don't want to watch every video full length. Now maybe there's cleanup work to do? I removed every Flash-related package from the package manager. Maybe it's Firefox? I couldn't find any hint. Maybe it's the video manager (display manager)? I am using KDE on an Ubuntu Natty install. I also enabled hardware acceleration with libdvpau1: sudo bash -c "echo 'EnableLinuxHWVideoDecode=1' >> /etc/adobe/mms.cfg" (this seems to have no effect at all ...)   I'm trying to re-install Oracle JDK 7 32 bit to 64 bit Ubuntu (previously 64 bit JDK was installed). JDK is currently present at /usr/lib/jvm/jdk1.7.0.   I have Java installed correctly, I did it by the manual http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Oracle-Java-on-Ubuntu-Linux I also installed Android SDK. However when I try to create a new Project IntelliJ Idea 12 and specify Project SDk choosing New - /home/alex/android-sdk-linux , it says me No Java SDK of appropriate version found. In addition to the Android SDK, you need to define a JSDK 1.5, 1.6 or 1.7 What did I miss?

• Turnkey with LightSwitch

  Microsoft has long wanted to find a replacement for Microsoft Access. The best attempt yet, which is due out in, or before, September is Visual Studio LightSwitch, with which it is said to be as 'easy as flipping a switch' to use Silverlight to create simple form-driven business applications. It is easy to get confused by the various initiatives from Microsoft. No, this isn't WebMatrix. There is no 'Razor', for this isn't meant for cute little ecommerce sites, but is designed to build simple database-applications of the card-box type. It is more clearly a .NET-based solution to the problem that every business seems to suffer from; the plethora of Access-based, and Excel-based 'private' and departmental database-applications. These are a nightmare for any IT department since they are often 'stealth' applications built by the business in the teeth of opposition from the IT Department zealots. As they are undocumented, it is scarily easy to bring a whole department into disarray by decommissioning a PC tucked under a desk somewhere. With LightSwitch, it is easy to re-write such applications in a standard, maintainable, way, using a SQL Server database, deployed somewhere reasonably safe such as Azure. Even Sharepoint or Windows Communication Foundation can be used as data sources. Oracle's ApEx has taken off remarkably well, and has shaken the perception that, for the business user, Oracle must remain a mystic force accessible only to the priests and acolytes. Microsoft, by comparison had only Access, which was first released in 1992, the year of the Madonna conical bustier. It looks just as dated. Microsoft badly needed an entirely new solution to the same business requirement that led to Access's and Foxpro's long-time popularity, but which had the same allure as ApEx. LightSwitch is sound in its ideas, and comfortingly conventional in its architecture. By giving an easy access to SQL Server databases, and providing a 'thumb and blanket' migration path to Access-heads, LightSwitch seems likely to offer a simple way of pulling more Microsoft users into the .NET community. If Microsoft puts its weight behind it, then it will give some glimmer of hope to the many Silverlight developers that Microsoft is capable of seeing through its .NET revolution.

  Having to work with large files now, I would like to know when the java libraries will start switching to long for indexing in their methods. From Inputstreams read(byte[] b, int off, int len) - funnily there is long skip(long) also - to MappedByteBuffer to the basic indexing of arrays and lists, everything is adressed as int. Is there an official plan for enhancment of the libraries? Do initiatives exist to pressure oracle into enhancing the libraries, if there is no official plan yet?

• Should I concentrate on writing code for money or my studies while in college?

  I am college student of Software Engineering. My worries are that while I am concentrating on my studies, my peers are getting down with the code (e.g. HTML, ASP, PHP, etc) to earn money. Should I be worried that I am not doing coding like them? I was asked to be Microsoft Student Partner but I refused because the person what was doing before me told it was just arranging events. Nothing as such like getting with Microsoft and coding. Should I be writing code and earning money as I still am in 4th semester? I only have C++ as learning language in college. Will my job count on these projects that I do, or should I concentrate on studies for now to get maximum benefit?

  Hi, I would like to create a share link to my website using javascript: script src="[url-to-my-script]" Basically the main idea behind this is to render HTML block with an image and link to the website. By using JavaScript approach I can control the look and feel of that link + potentially I could change the link html in the future without touching partner websites. The only potential problem I see with this approach is SEO. I'm not sure if google will be able to index that link to my website, since it's generated by javascript.
