• Setting up Git / Apache on Windows

  I'm following this tutorial to set up a personal Git server on Apache on my Windows 7 box. However, when I add the following to my httpd.conf, Apache throws an error when I try to start it. Can anyone assist in fixing whatever is wrong? • Performance mitigations serving content from a UNC share via IIS 6

  I have a quad processor vmware instance running Windows 2003 and 1gb ethernet. I'm comparing serving the exact same heavy .NET 2.0 content from the local hard drive versus serving it from a UNC drive. If I use WCAT to load it down, I see about a 40% reduction in transactions/sec while serving from the UNC. Processor time barely moves from 45% and the NIC sits around 40% either way. I don't see any significant memory loading either way. Context Switches/Transaction, though, more than doubles when serving from the UNC. Pathlengths more than double as well, but I believe that's just an expression of the effect of context switching. All told, it looks like the bottleneck is processor switching while waiting on content from the UNC share. Is my experience about the norm? Is there some mitigation I might try? I twiddled HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters\MaxCmds a little bit per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd296694(WS.10).aspx, but to no obvious effect. I kind of doubt my problem is lack of connections, but rather just the act of switching from thread to thread while waiting on data.

  Hey! First things first - let me state that I am not intending to play games on this - I have narrowed down to these 3 purely based on specs and its individual brand reliability in the market. I intend to primarily use: Visual Studio 2008 Pro a lot (develop and deploy on Windows platforms) SQL Server 2005 Oracle 10g Adobe Photoshop CS4 Microsoft Expression Studio Google Sketchup I currently use a desktop PC (Core2Duo 2.66Ghz with 3GB DDRII memory) running Vista Business 32-bit - and I have to admit that, especially for Visual Studio, its quite sluggish to a point where it affects productivity. Furthermore, I intend to only use the notebook on a table - with a cooled surface, like granite :) - so I would appreciate people's input with regard to heat issues. Im aware that the Dell's primary exhaust gets blocked by the lid when open, but some reviews don't seem to place extraordinary emphasis on heat issues resulting from this. My options for the Dell/Alienware: Core i7 720QM 4GB DDRIII memory ATI mobility 3670 (512) 128GB Solid State Drive 16-inch Full HD RGB-LED LCD display (1080p) 3-year next-business-day support My configuration for the Apple MBP: Core2Duo 2.8Ghz (Im assuming the T9600) 4GB DDRIII memory 128GB Solid State Drive standard 1 year support The one advantage I think of with the MBP is that I can have the addition of OSX (though Im unsure what I would use it for, but purely to play around with a much-boasted-about OS) What are your thoughts on this, especially regarding build-quality, heat, performance and battery-life? • email output of powershell script

  I found this wonderful script that outputs the status of the current DFS backlog to the powershell console. This works great, but I need the script to email me so I can schedule it to run nightly. I have tried using the Send-MailMessage command, but can't get it to work. Mainly because my powershell skills are very weak. I believe most of the issue revolve around the script using the Write-Host command. While the coloring is nice I would much rather have it email me the results. I also need the solution to be able to specify a mail server since the dfs servers don't have email capability. Any help or tips are welcome and appreciated. • Birt on Tomcat unable to find JARs

  First, my setup: BiRT Runtime: 3.7.2. Ubuntu 10.04 Tomcat 6 Sun Java 1.6.0 I have a jar file I want to deploy onto the Tomcat server so it is usable by the runtime, so I placed the jar file in /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/birt/WEB-INF/lib. As I understand it this is the default location for JAR files that are going to be used by a BiRT report. But the jar file is not accessible by the report that is trying to call it. In the BiRT logs I see: Error evaluating Javascript expression. Script engine error: ReferenceError: "DynDSinfo" is not defined. (/report/data-sources/oda-data-source[@id="54"]/method[@name="beforeOpen"]#20) Script source: /report/data-sources/oda-data-source[@id="54"]/method[@name="beforeOpen"], line: 0, text: __bm_beforeOpen() org.eclipse.birt.data.engine.core.DataException: Fail to execute script in function __bm_beforeOpen(). Source: "DynDSinfo" is the class I am trying to reference.. and now for the kicker... this works fine on Tomcat6 on Windows 7. The same files in the same places. • F5 Networks iRule/Tcl - Escaping UNICODE 6-character escape sequences so they are processed as and r

  We are trying to get an F5 BIG-IP LTM iRule working properly with SharePoint 2007 in an SSL termination role. This architecture offloads all of the SSL processing to the F5 and the F5 forwards interactive requests/responses to the SharePoint front end servers via HTTP only (over a secure network). For the purposes of this discussion, iRules are parsed by a Tcl interpretation engine on the F5 Networks BIG-IP device. As such, the F5 does two things to traffic passing through it: Redirects any request to port 80 (HTTP) to port 443 (HTTPS) through HTTP 302 redirects and URL rewriting. Rewrites any response to the browser to selectively rewrite URLs embedded within the HTML so that they go to port 443 (HTTPS). This prevents the 302 redirects from breaking DHTML generated by SharePoint. We've got part 1 working fine. The main problem with part 2 is that in the response rewrite because of XML namespaces and other similar issues, not ALL matches for "http:" can be changed to "https:". Some have to remain "http:". Additionally, some of the "http:" URLs are difficult in that they live in SharePoint-generated JavaScript and their slashes (i.e. "/") are actually represented in the HTML by the UNICODE 6-character string, "\u002f". For example, in the case of these tricky ones, the literal string in the outgoing HTML is: http:\u002f\u002fservername.company.com\u002f And should be changed to: https:\u002f\u002fservername.company.com\u002f Currently we can't even figure out how to get a match in a search/replace expression on these UNICODE sequence string literals. It seems that no matter how we slice it, the Tcl interpreter is interpreting the "\u002f" string into the "/" translation before it does anything else. We've tried various combinations of Tcl escaping methods we know about (mainly double-quotes and using an extra "\" to escape the "\" in the UNICODE string) but are looking for more methods, preferably ones that work. Does anyone have any ideas or any pointers to where we can effectively self-educate about this? Thanks very much in advance.

• Quick, Linux-compatible unit-aware calculator

  I want to be able to press a keyboard combination, start typing a mathematical expression that includes units and slightly advanced math (not just a four-function calculator), and get a result immediately, in units that I specify, that I can copy and paste. Currently I open Firefox and press Ctrl+K, type in the search box, and it usually gives me a result in the drop-down from Google Calculator. It doesn't always, though, so I press "=" at the end, wait for a result, remove the equals, wait for a result, realize it doesn't understand the way I typed a unit, open the result in a new tab, etc. it sucks. Wolfram Alpha is smarter, but very much slower, and the output is all images, not text, and I don't have a quick widget for it, if such a thing could even exist. GNU units has a ton of units, which is great, and I can define my own units, which is great, but they have to be written in specific, unintuitive ways, it doesn't handle much advanced math, and I'd need to open a terminal, start units, etc. I hate the command line. I wasted a lot of time trying to make front-ends for units in Deskbar and Launchy, but I'm not a real coder and I don't use either of those anymore. Any other solutions or enhancements of these?

• Stream video from a computer to a tablet

  I would like to watch presentations and college videos I have on my computer, from my tablet. There are almost a hundred of GB in videos, so I would like to watch them in streaming from my computer. My wife has also tons of videos so I have decided to do a kind of streaming local service to watch the videos from our tablets. I have found an article about how to do it with Internet Information Server, but the article is relaying in an application that is not free (Expression Encoder). Since this is for home fun, I am not willing to pay, so I would like to ask for some free encoder that can do the trick. I have no idea about streaming. Actually, I tried to hang the files directly on IIS, and the browser tried first to download some of them and some other (mp4?) got played badly, so I could not get a smooth video experience. What is missing? What is the deal with H.264 ? Can I roll with VC-1 and play videos in my Android tablet with streaming with an acceptable quality through my WLAN home network? Any better solution?   In Textmate, I am able to add text to several lines at once by clicking and holding the Option key and dragging with the mouse. say I have the following lines: foo 1: foo 2: foo 3: I can easily click and hold option and then drag down with the lines to select the text at the end of each line, and then type "bar" once and it will be added to all lines, as such: foo 1: bar foo 2: bar foo 3: bar Fantastic. The problem I run into, is when my lines aren't the same length, as such foo 19: foo 37842342346: foo 503: Now if I want to add text to the end of each line, I have to either do it manually, or choose enough space so that the longest line is not overwritten, as such: foo 19: bar foo 37842342346: bar foo 503: bar This results in a lot of unwanted whitespace in lines that don't need it. Granted, I could easily run a regular expression search to replace all multiple occurrences of a space with a single one, but I was wondering if there's a way to select all ending of lines at once without having to do that. Any idea? Thanks!

This might be un-noticeable for things like but for stuff like it's definitely nice, especially compared to the fact that naïve LaTeX users often produce uglinesses such as There is a problem, however, when using under-/overbraces in math and putting parentheses around the complete term it becomes ugly. For simple things like shown here this can be solved by not letting the parentheses stretch which looks almost right. However, for more complex things it's certainly not an option: Both variants look horrible. So is there a way of letting the parentheses only stretch around the actual term parts, not including the under-/overbraces? Those are frequently used for annotations of individual pieces, so simply not using them is a bad idea too. In LaTeX you can get away with guesswork and using explicit sizes for the parentheses instead of relying on \left and \right but I haven't found a comparable option in Word yet. Since the underbrace is (tree-wise) a sibling of the term in parentheses it probably simply has to stretch and there probably can't be an algorithm that determines when to stretch or when not, considering that \above and \below are used for annotations as well but also for other things where perentheses have to stretch. Also, since the parenthesized expression is opaque from the outside one has to put the underbrace inside. From a markup point of view, at least. One can probably draw the rest around but that falls apart when styles change and wouldn't be a good idea either.

• Nmap XML parsing with Powershell

  I am trying to parse the XML output from NMAP and isolate just the hostadddress and the vendor from the osmatch. I've actually done that with the following: select-xml -path nmap.xml -xpath "nmaprun/host/address/@addr|nmaprun/host/os/osmatch/osclass/@vendor" | select -expandproperty node Which produces: #text ----- 10.20.30.1 HP 10.20.30.2 Linux 10.20.30.3 HP What I was not expecting is that it would jam it all into a single column.Silly me would like the address in one column, and the vendor in another column. I Would like: #addr #vendor ----- ------- 10.20.30.1 HP 10.20.30.2 Linux 10.20.30.3 HP In the several hours I spent learning xpath today, I also realized that this file has a single address for each host, but multiple OS guesses for each host. I would also like to use only the first osGuess in the output. Tired using: -xpath "(nmaprun/host/os/osmatch/osclass/@vendor)[1]" But that truncates the whole data set to a single line of output, instead of only limiting the only the first osclass element of each host. Changing the parens to surround only the @vendor element like .../(@vendor)[1] and .../(@vendor[1]) but both fail with "Expression must evaluate to a node-set." Thanks in advance

  I was messing around with grep and put this in my .zshenv: export GREP_OPTIONS="--color=auto" export GREP_COLORS='mt=1;34' I was bonking my head on the keyboard and changing GREP_COLORS around for a minute trying to figure out why the folder colors were working, but the matching text wasn't. I was doing this: $ grep -R -n -i -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * The line number and file names were set with the default colors, but the matching text wasn't. After spending way too much time, I thought to do this: $ grep -R -n -e "functionFoo\(" --include=*.cs --exclude-dir=Logs * (I removed the -i option.) That's all it took to get the matching text to correctly show up in bold blue. This is a Cygwin on Vista setup, with rxvt running zsh. Any idea why grep colors would break on specifying a case-insensitive match? Update: Under cygwin 1.7, it's a little bit better - case insensitive search works correctly, but it only highlights the word that matches the expression exactly. In other words, "FunctionFoo" highlights "FunctionFoo" but not "functionFoo" and vice versa. Probably a grep issue so I'll be submitting it to that list.

• Exim: send every emails with a predefined sender

  We use Exim on our servers to send emails only from local automated users, as root, cron, etc. We have to specify every possible users into /etc/email-addresses. For example: root: [email protected] cron: [email protected] backup: [email protected] This allow us te receive every email generated. The problem is when we add a user for whatever reason (for example when we add a package, some add a user), we can forget to add this user to /etc/email-addresses. Most of the time it's not a problem, but this is not clean. And the overall method is not clean. We'd like to configure Exim to send every emails with the same source address. i.e. every sent email comes from [email protected] One way could be to use a wildcard or a regular expression into /etc/email-addresses but this is not supported. I don't currently understand Exim enought to figure out how to modify this in a way or another. Ideally, Exim should look into /etc/email-addresses first, and if no match it use the predefined address. But this is very secondary. There are two places where this address is used: 1. when Exim send the FROM: command to the smtp server 2. inside the header edit: The rewrite section is the original one from Debian begin rewrite .ifndef NO_EAA_REWRITE_REWRITE *@+local_domains "${lookup{${local_part}}lsearch{/etc/email-addresses} \ {$value}fail}" Ffrs *@ETC_MAILNAME "${lookup{${local_part}}lsearch{/etc/email-addresses} \ {$value}fail}" Ffrs .endif (comments removed)

• cannot reach munin port on other AWS instance

  2 AWS instances, in the same region but different availability zones, one is in regular EC2 and the other is in VPC, both have an Elastic IP, both are 64bit Amazon Linux AMI 2014.03.1. Both are running munin-node. The instance in the VPC is running munin-cron. I have added incoming TCP and UDP port 4949 to the security groups of both instances. On the munin node, I added an allow-line with the IP address (regular expression) of the munin server to /etc/munin/munin-node.conf. I bind munin-node to any interface using host *. Then I did sudo service munin-node restart. Then I ran netstat. $ sudo netstat -at | grep munin tcp 0 0 *:munin *:* LISTEN So the port is open there. On the munin server AND on the munin node: $ nmap AMAZON-IP -p 80,4949 | grep tcp 80/tcp open http 4949/tcp closed munin On the munin node: $ nmap localhost -p 80,4949 | grep tcp 80/tcp open http 4949/tcp open munin So from the outside, the http port is open (Apache is running) but the munin port is closed. The node can't even reach the munin port on it's own public IP address, but it can on localhost. I added port 80 as a sanity check, to be sure that there is network connectivity at all. So what am I overlooking here?

• Powershell script to delete secondary SMTP addresses of Exchange 2010 Mail Contacts

  I have a few thousand Exchange 2010 Mail Contacts who get erroneously assigned internal SMTP addresses by the default recipient policy. I'm trying to use the following command to delete these addresses (keeping the primary SMTP) and disabling the automatic update from recipient policy so the SMTP addresses don't get recreated again. Why GNUTERM=aqua is exported even if it's not defined anywhere? All I need is a script that would allow me to run Octave by simply typing octave in the terminal.   My website software replaces space characters with '+' characters in the URL, A proper link would look like 'http://www.schirmacher.de/display/INFO/How+to+reattach+a+disk+to+XenServer' for example. Some websites link to that article but somehow their embedded editor can't handle the encoding, so what I see in the httpd log files is actually GET /display/INFO/How%2525252bto%2525252breattach%2525252ba%2525252bdisk%2525252bto%2525252bXenServer which of course leads to a 404 error. It seems that the '+' character is encoded as '%2b' and then the '%' character is encoded as '%25' - several times. Since there are many such references to different pages from different websites, I would like to rewrite the url so that the visitors get the correct page. Here's my attempt which does not work: RewriteRule ^(.*)%25(.*)$ $1%$2 [R=301] What it is supposed to do is: take everything before the %25 string and everything after it, concat those strings with a '%' in between, then redirect. With the example input URL the rule should rewrite to /display/INFO/How%25252bto%2525252breattach%2525252ba%2525252bdisk%2525252bto%2525252bXenServer followed by a redirect, then it should rewrite to /display/INFO/How%252bto%2525252breattach%2525252ba%2525252bdisk%2525252bto%2525252bXenServer and again to /display/INFO/How%2bto%2525252breattach%2525252ba%2525252bdisk%2525252bto%2525252bXenServer and so on. Finally, after a lot of redirects I should have left /display/INFO/How%2bto%2breattach%2ba%2bdisk%2bto%2bXenServer which is a valid url equivalent to /display/INFO/How+to+reattach+a+disk+to+XenServer. My problem is that the expression does not match at all, so it does not even replace a single occurrence of %25. I understand that there is a limit in the number of redirects and I should really use the [N] flag however I don't even get the first step right.

  I need to find the default gateway in a openvpn scenario where the route output looks like that: IPv4 Route Table =========================================================================== Active Routes: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.49.73.1 10.49.73.24 10 0.0.0.0 128.0.0.0 10.8.0.1 10.8.0.2 30 So I googled around a bit and a found this script here: @For /f "tokens=3" %%* in ( 'route.exe print ^|findstr "\<0.0.0.0\>"' ) Do @Set "DefaultGateway=%%*" echo %DefaultGateway% This works, but matches both lines in the route output. But I need to find this line: 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.49.73.1 10.49.73.24 10 So I tried to modify the findstr parameter like this: findstr "\<0.0.0.0\>.\<0.0.0.0\>" in the expectation that '.' will match for the tab between the columns. But it doesn't. It will still set DefaultGateway to 10.8.0.1 I couldn't find a clue in MS documentation either. Maybe someone knows the right expression? Thanks a lot.

• Google analytics ignoring "required step" in goals

  I am A/B testing a landing page to see which converts better. The funnels are set up exactly the same in terms of the goal completion URL and funnel steps, with one exception: the first step (which is a required step) has a different URL to represent each of the two landing pages. Unfortunately, Google is tracking a conversion for both of these goals regardless of which landing page a user is reaching! It looks like the "required step" is broken...perhaps it is a deeper issue if others haven't noticed it, such as it only not working when the goal URL is the same between multiple goals. Here is an example of what I mean. Goal 1: Goal URL: /users/dashboard (head match) Funnel: 1. /homepages/index1 (required step) 2. /users/register 3. /users/edit Goal 2: Goal URL: /users/dashboard (head match) Funnel: 1. /homepages/index2 (required step) 2. /users/register 3. /users/edit As you can see, the only difference is step #1 of the funnel. Since I am A/B testing the landing page of the site, this should be the only difference. However, when I look at the goal page of Google Analytics, I see that the goal is being recorded for both of these regardless of the landing page being reached. The only tinkering I've done is attempting to wrap each funnel step's goal in ^ and $ characters for an exact regular expression match, but this didn't make a difference. Thoughts?

• Why does loading a html page opens automaically the printer dialog?

  I have the problem that loading a certain webpage in firefox automatically opens the printer dialog. How is that? Additional information: This only happens on firefox 24.0 on Windows 7. It neither happens on Windows Explorer in Windows 7 nor on Firefox 24 on a Linux system. This also happens when using the firefox safemode, with all add-ons disabled. I cannot post the webpage, since it is not public and restricted. Multiple javascript files are used, but none contains the expression print(). The page content does not contain the phrase 'printer'. It has nothing to do with printing something. This happens sometimes, but not always. I cannot say for sure the URL and/or the content is always identical. I can answer any other questions, like 'Does the page contain this and that...', 'does the URL contain this and that...' Basic question: What could be the reason for the annoying printer pop up?
