  • Choosing the right e-mail client

    Hi all, I'm currently using Outlook 2007 (under windows 7), but I much prefer free software (open source being the best of course), so I thought I'd ask for expert advice here. I thought it might be easier if I included a small "wanted list": I receive about 15 to 30 e-mails every day, but I have large archives (10'000 emails), which I frequently need to access. I usually open and close my mail program many times, so I'd like it to start pretty fast I cannot use an online mailbox, because I have too many email addresses (about 5: 1 for work, 1 for home, 1 semi-private, 1 for specific emails, and 1 for newletters By order of importance, the things I'd like my mail client to be able to: Efficiently categorize e-mails. Until now, I've mostly been using Outlook folders, because filtering by tags was not easy, but I'd rather one large list of mails, neatly tagged so I can easily filter. I'd love being able to select mails by tags (eg in a click or too (could be a tab) show all mails tagged with "software") Create "tagging rules", such as "if the mail was sent to this address, add this tag", or "if the body contains ..., add that tag" Sync contacts with Gmail, handle tasks (syncing with toodledo would be awesome), possibly provide a calendar Create e-mail templates, signatures... Other ideas: A timeline, scripting support, being able to import MS Outlook emails, provide a nice backup format... Thanks for sharing ideas and suggestions!

  • Retrieve a user's Exchange database in powershell

    Hey Everyone, I've scoured the interwebs for a few days now off and on to find this. I am creating a powershell script for email-enabling new user's(Exchange 2007). To give you a little background when we have a new hire, their AD account is created at our off-site helpdesk, but they don't create their email account. I'm trying to automate the process of mail-enabling the user which involves putting them in the same database as an existing user, disable imap pop activesync, and lastly email the requester of the ticket. I would like to just get prompted for the New User's name, User to Replicate(mailbox, storage group, database), and the person to email after it's been created. So if someone could just help with a command to Retrieve a user's Exchange database in powershell that would be great, but if people also want to help with my hacked up script please do so as well!!!   • Associate email account with "Personal Folders" Outlook data file?

    In the process of migrating email servers I've run into an interesting problem: In Outlook 2007 you have the default "Personal Folders" item. This contains the email for the account that was origionally setup with Outlook. My issue is that I have deleted the account associated with that and created an entirely new account. So now I have "Personal Folders" and "[email protected]". However I can't delete "Personal Folders". nor associate "[email protected]" with that PST file. Deleteting it in Outlook (Tools Account Settings Data Files) gave the error "The default data file cannot be removed, because it is your default delivery location. After you have selected a different default delivery location, your current file can be removed." Deleting the PST file itself (outlook.pst) made outlook demand where its default file . would be. So I selected my "[email protected]" PST file and restarted Outlook. Now "Personal Folders" is called "[email protected]", but I still have a duplicate account called this. Which is bad. Worse, my email is associated with the duplicate PST, not the default. How can I associate my email with my default PST or delete the default PST entirely? Luckily I have backu

    My company has thousands of employees organized thoroughly via Active Directory. I have confidence in the accuracy of the Department and Title information displayed in the user profiles. I'm helping to put up a brand new SharePoint 2007 site, and I contacted IT about managing the site's permissions through AD Groups. The goal is to have the site automatically assign read/write/contribute/whatever permissions based on the information in AD. For example, we could create an AD Group called "Managers" that would contain anyone with the "Manager" title in their AD user profile. I would have SharePoint tap into this AD Group to mass assign permissions if I knew all managers would need a certain level of access (read/write/contribute/whatever). Then if a manager joins the company or leaves it, the group is automatically updated (provided AD gets updated, of course). My IT rep called back and said it couldn't be done. This seems like a pretty straightforward business requirement, and one of the huge benefits of having Active Directory, but maybe I'm mistaken. Could anyone shed some light on this? A) Is it possible to use dynamically-updated AD Groups when assigning permissions via SharePoint? (Does anyone know of a guide I could show my doubtful IT rep?) B) Is there a "best practice" way to go about this? I've read some debate on whether SharePoint Groups or AD Groups are the way to go. My main concern is dynamic updating. C) If this isn't available out of the box, can someone recommend third-party software that will provide the functionality I'm looking for? A big thanks to anyone who can help me out!!

  • How to get just value from database query in Excel?

    I'm creating a spreadsheet as a collection point of information from a number of MS Access databases. I will run a query on each database to get a count of records in a particular table. Each database has the same structure but different content as they are used in different situations. So the query returns a single value, rec_count. I've figured out how to create that query, save it and then use it as the data source. So far so good. The problem is that Excel treats the query results as a table. So instead of getting just the single value the query returns, I also get the field name. Thus the result takes up two cells instead of one. When linking in the data source, I only see Table, PivotTable Report and PivotChart as options for viewing the data. I don't want any of those. I just want the single value without any formatting, column headers, etc. Is there a way to do this is Excel 2007?

  • Email Mail Merge via linked Excel sheet

    I have a MS Word 2007 document setup as a Mail Merge doc. I am using Excel as the data source. The MERGEFIELD ClientData contains an Excel file (test.xlsx). I want to merge the data from the Excel file listed in ClientData into the respective Mail Merge document. However, whenever I start the Mail Merge the {MERGEFIELD ClientData} field gets resolved only once and does not select the next row from ClientData. So this: {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\{MERGEFIELD ClientData}" \a \f 4 \h} Becomes this after starting the merge: {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\test.xlsx" \a \f 4 \h} So every Mail Merge doc uses the test.xlsx instead of the respective Excel document specific to the client (i.e test1.xlsx, test2.xlsx, test3.xlsx, etc.) As the merge runs through each Mail Merge doc I expect to see this: {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\test.xlsx" \a \f 4 \h} {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\test1.xlsx" \a \f 4 \h} {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\test2.xlsx" \a \f 4 \h} {LINK Excel.Sheet.12 "C:\\path\\to\\file\\test3.xlsx" \a \f 4 \h} But for some reason this isn't happening.   • Duplicate forwarded messages in Blackberry when using BIS

    Our Setup External email arrives at a Postfix server, is scanned, and then forwarded via settings in transport (using the RELAY:[{ip-address}] for a given address) to an Exchange 2007 server. Some users are on Exchange, but a few are still on the Postfix server (they will be moved in the near future). IMAPS is provided for external connections via Dovecot; in-house, IMAP is provided for the Gateway and native MAPI is used for Exchange/Outlook. Blackberries are connected via BIS, which uses Dovecot as a reverse-proxy IMAPS service to connect to Exchange (when the mailbox exists on Exchange, otherwise it connects to the mailbox on the gateway). The Issue We have a user that, when they forward an email on their Outlook client, they get a duplicate of the original message on their Blackberry. When I say duplicate, I mean that they have a copy of the forwarded version of the message (i.e. their version of the message that they obtained hitting the forward button), and a copy of the original message that shows up at the same time. The expected behavior is to just see the forwarded message, not the forwarded message and a 2nd copy of the original message. We've only seen this with Outlook users that also have a Blackberry. Other IMAP clients, such as OS X Mail or Thunderbird, do not exhibit this behavior when connecting to the Exchange server; forwarded messages work as expected. The Questions what is causing this to happen? why does it only affect Outlook/Blackberry setups, and not TBird/Blackberry or OSX-Mail/Blackberry? how do we get it to stop, before people go insane and never forward messages again?

  • VSTO Outlook project

    I currently have an Outlook 2007 VSTO plug-in which needs to write certain values into the registry. I am programmitically downloading and installing a new stationery into Outlook by saving a htm file into the users App Data folder and then updating the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Common\MailSettings\NewTheme registry key which sets which stationery that is currently in use. So far everything is fine for 2007, but I have checked a PC that is running Outlook 2010, and this registry key is in a different spot. Instead of 12.0 as the version it is 14.0, which makes sense. Is there anyway I can determine what version the plugin is installed in, so that I can write the key based on the correct version in the correct location?!? I haven't been able to find anything on this so far, but surely there is a way..?!? Thanks in advance. Chris

    Our environment consists of Project Server 2007 and MOSS 2007. We have around 750 projects and lots of "Enterprise Custom Fields" set up to track all of the metadata associated with a project. Our main requirement is to be able to search/filter/group/sort all of these projects by metadata in SharePoint. Our current process involves syncing this custom metadata into a SharePoint list (which requires a LOT of maintenance). Question: Is it possible to leverage SharePoint search to crawl/index these metadata fields in Project Server? How would I go about setting this up?

    I've created a simple application .Net Class that converts an excel spreadsheet into a a pdf file. I then get a Excel 2007 application to call this dll which works fine on my development machine. However when i deploy it on to a machine that has both the .net framework and excel 2007, i get this error - run-time error '429' activex component can't create object when i try and register the tlb or the dll , i get error below. the module c:\temp\test\Printlibarary.dll2 was loaded but the entry-point dllregisterserver was not found. Make sure that ...... is a valid dll or ocx file and then try again. Can someone please help me to resolve this.

Messages were transferred in to Exchange by copying them from the old Apple Xserve, accessed using IMAP. So my question, finally: 1. Is there any way to get the IMAP Exchange connector to rebuild its cache of messages since it doesn't seem to be pulling them directly from the MAPI store? 2.   • Why does Excel now give me already existing name range error on Copy Sheet?

    I've been working on a Microsoft Excel 2007 spreadsheet for several days. I'm working from a master template like sheet and copying it to a new sheet repeatedly. Up until today, this was happening with no issues. However, in the middle of today this suddenly changed and I do not know why. Now, whenever I try to copy a worksheet I get about ten dialogs, each one with a different name range object (shown below as 'XXXX') and I click yes for each one: A formula or sheet you want to move or copy contains the name 'XXXX', which already exists on the destination worksheet. Do you want to use this version of the name? To use the name as defined in destination sheet, click Yes. To rename the range referred to in the formula or worksheet, click No, and enter a new name in the Name Conflict dialog box. The name range objects refer to cells in the sheet. For example, E6 is called name range PRE on multiple sheets (and has been all along) and some of the formulas refer to PRE instead of $E$6. One of the 'XXXX' above is this PRE. These name ranges should only be resolved within the sheet within which they appear. This was not an issue before despite the same name range existing on multiple sheets before. I want to keep my name ranges. What could have changed in my spreadsheet to cause this change in behavior? I've gone back to prior sheets created this way and now they give the message too when copied. I tried a different computer and a different user and the same behavior is seen everywhere. I can only conclude something in the spreadsheet has changed. What could this be and how can I get back the old behavior whereby I can copy sheets with name ranges and not get any errors? Looking in the Name Manager I see that the name ranges being complained about show twice, once as scope Template and again as scope Workbook. If I delete the scope Template ones the error goes away on copy however, I get a bunch of #REF errors. If I delete the scope Workbook ones, all seems okay and the errors on copy go away too, so perhaps this is the answer, but I'm nervous about what effect this deletion will have and wonder how the Workbook ones came into existence in the first place. Will it be safe to just delete the Workbook name manager scoped entries and how might these have come into existence without my knowing it to begin with?

Issue Backup Failure (VSS related) Backup Software Windows Server Backup (ver 1.0) Simplified Error Creation of the shared protection point timed out. Unknown error (0x81000101) The flush and hold writes operation on volume C: timed out while waiting for a release writes command. Volume Shadow Copy Warning: VSS spent 43 seconds trying to flush and hold the volume \?\Volume{b562a5dd-8246-11de-a75b-806e6f6e6963}. This might cause problems when other volumes in the shadow-copy set timeout waiting for the release-writes phase, and it can cause the shadow-copy creation to fail. Trying again when disk activity is lower may solve this problem. What I've tried Server Reboot. Updated Server and Exchange. ReConfigured Sharepoint (Helped resolve last vss error I encountered). registered VSS Dll's (Backups will sometimes work afterwards but VSS writers fail soon after). Tried Implementing Hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956136 Tried Implementing Hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972135 I left it for a few days and a few backups came through but then began to fail again.   • Sharepoint AD imported users are becomming sporadically corrupted, causing us to have to create a new account

    Sharepoint 2007 MOSS with AD imported users. All servers are 2008. ***UPDATE More details in testing. This Sharepoint is in an AD Child domain (clients.mycompany.local), which is sub to the root of the AD tree (mycompany.local). The user is in the parent tree (as are half of the other functional users. I have elevated the user rights to Domain. In looking at the logs, it seems that the Sharepoint server is trying to authenticate them by querying the DC for the clients domain (which is the way it normally works and still works for all existing identically configured users). I think if I could force it to authenticate up to the top domain DC then it would be ok?? I have around 50 users, over the past 2 months, I have had a handful of the users suddenly unable to login to Sharepoint. When they login, they either get a blank screen or they are repropmted. These users are using accounts that have been used for many months, sometimes the problem originates with a password change. In all cases, the users account works on every other Active Directory authenticated resource (domain, exchange, LDAP). In the most recent case, last night I was forced deleted a user ("John smith") because of corruption. The orifinal account name was jsmith. I deleted him from active directory, then deleted him from the profile list in Sharepoint Shared Services. I could not find a way to delete him from the Sharepoint user list, but I reran the import after recreating his account (renamed it too just to be sure to "smithj"). At first, this did not wor, the user could still access all other resources but Sharepoint. then, some 30 minutes later it inexplicably started working. This morning, the user changed passwords, which immediatly broke the login on Sharepoint again. There are no formula involved. I already checked for extra spaces. Immediately reapplying the Remove Duplicates command does not remove the remaining duplicate values. Reapplying the Remove Duplicates command after a reverse-sort seems to remove the remaining duplicates. Reverse-sorting before using the first Remove Duplicates changes the result (213 duplicate values removed and 387 unique values remained), only in the non-suffixed non-prefixed group. Can you reproduce this bug in Excel 2007 like I do? What triggers it? Could it the composite (numbers and text) data set? I'm not looking for alternatives. I want to know when not to use the feature and revert to already known (Excel 2003 era) alternatives.
