• One template specialization for multiple classes

  Let's assume we have a template function "foo": template<class T> void foo(T arg) { ... } I can make specialization for some particular type, e.g. template<> void foo(int arg) { ... } If I wanted to use the same specialization for all builtin numeric types (int, float, double etc.) I would write those lines many times. I know that body can be thrown out to another function and just call of this is to be made in every specialization's body, however it would be nicer if i could avoid writting this "void foo(..." for every type. Is there any possibility to tell the compiler that I want to use this specialization for all this types?

• C# double-quoted path name being escaped when read from file

  I am trying to read in a text input file that contains a list of filenames (one per line). However, I am running into an issue if the user double-quotes the path (because it has a space in it). For example, a normal input file might have: C:\test\test.tiff C:\test\anothertest.tiff C:\test\lasttest.tiff These get read in fine by my code ("C:\\test\\test.tiff" etc) However, if I have the following input file: "C:\test with spaces\test.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\anothertest.tiff" "C:\test with spaces\lasttest.tiff" These get read in double-quotes and all ("\"C:\\test with spaces\\test.tiff\"" etc). This becomes a problem when I try to open the files (I understandably get invalid character exceptions). My question is, how do I fix this? I want to allow users to input quoted strings and handle them correctly. My first impression was to just write a little method that strips off beginning or ending quotes, but I thought there might be a better way.

• Is it possible to create a quine in every turing-complete language?

  I just wanted to know if it is 100% possible, if my language is turing-complete, to write a program in it that prints itself out (of course not using a file reading function) So if the language just has the really necessary things in order to make it turing complete (I would prove that by translating Brainf*ck code to it), like output, variables, conditions and gotos (hell yes, gotos), can I try writing a quine in it? I'm also asking this because I'm not sure that a quine directly fits into Turing's law that the turing machine is capable of any computational task. I just want to know so I don't try for years without knowing that it may be impossible.

  I am converting a website from ISO to UTF-8, so I need to convert the Mysql database too. On internet, I read various solutions, I don't know wich one to choose. Do I really need to convert my varchar columns to binary, then to utf8 like that : ALTER TABLE t MODIFY col BINARY(150); ALTER TABLE t MODIFY col CHAR(150) CHARACTER SET utf8; This is long to do that for each column, of each table, of each database. I have 10 database, wich 20 tables each, wich around 2 - 3 varchar colums (2 queries each column), this gives me around 1000 queries to write ! How come ? How to do ?

• How to determine whether a dependency object implements a given dependency property (C# / WPF)

  I am working with the classes in the System.Windows.Documents namespace, trying to write some generic code that will conditionally set the value of certain dependency properties, depending on whether these properties exist on a given class. For example, the following method assigns an arbitrary value to the Padding property of the passed FrameworkContentElement: void SetElementPadding(FrameworkContentElement element) { element.SetValue(Block.PaddingProperty, new Thickness(155d)); } However, not all concrete implementations of FrameworkContentElement have a Padding property (Paragraph does but Span does not) so I would expect the property assignment to succeed for types that implement this property and to be silently ignored for types that do not. But it seems that the above property assignment succeeds for instances of all derivatives of FrameworkContentElement, regardless of whether they implement the Padding property. I make this assumption because I have always been able to read back the assigned value. I assume there is some flaw in the way I am assigning property values. What should I do to ensure that a given dependency property assignment is ignored by classes that do not implement that property? Many thanks for your advice. Tim

• Viewing large text file in a browser

  Hi, I need to write a text file viewer (not the directory tree, but the actual file contents) for use in a browser. It will be used to view large files. I want to give the user the ability to actually ummm, browse the file, ie prev page & next page buttons, while each page will show only a portion of the file. Two question: Is there anyway to pass the file descriptor through POST (or something) so that on each page I can keep reading from an already open file, and not starting all over again (again - huge files) Is there a way to read the file backwards? Will be very useful for browsing back in a file. Any other implementation ideas are very welcome. Thanks

  I have problem organizing my unittest based class test for family of tests. For example assume I implement a "dictionary" interface, and have 5 different implementations want to testing. I do write one test class that tests a dictionary interface. But how can I nicely reuse it to test my all classes? So far I do ugly: DictType = hashtable.HashDict In top of file and then use DictType in test class. To test another class I manually change the DictType to something else. How can do this otherwise? Can't pass arguments to unittest classes so is there a nicer way?

  The title pretty much says it all, but here's the issue. I have an generic handler that returns Javascript; the only line of code that deals with caching that I put in is the following: context.Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.Public); context.Response.Cache.SetExpires(DateTime.Now.AddYears(1)); context.Response.ContentType = "text/javascript"; context.Response.Write("result"); I'm debugging on localhost. out of Visual Studio 2008, (that's "localhost." so fiddler picks it up) and Fiddler2 sees the expire date, but says that the cache header is set to private, and the page isn't being cached. Can anybody see what's going wrong here?

• Need to preserve order of elements sent in JSON from Java

  I'm using JSON.org APIs for Java to use JSON in my JSP webapp, I know JSONObject doesn't preserve order of elements the way they are put into it and one has to use JSONArray for that but I don't know how to use it since I need to send key and value both as received from the database, and here I'm sending data to jQuery via JSON where I need the order of data to be maintained. Following is my servlet code, where I'm getting results from the database using ORDER BY and hence I want the order to be exact as returned from the database. Also this JSON object requested using $.post method of jQuery and is used to populate dropdown on reciever page. • Python if statement efficiency

  A friend (fellow low skill level recreational python scripter) asked me to look over some code. I noticed that he had 7 separate statements that basically said. if ( a and b and c): do something the statements a,b,c all tested their equality or lack of to set values. As I looked at it I found that because of the nature of the tests, I could re-write the whole logic block into 2 branches that never went more than 3 deep and rarely got past the first level (making the most rare occurrence test out first). if a: if b: if c: else: if c: else: if b: if c: else: if c: To me, logically it seems like it should be faster if you are making less, simpler tests that fail faster and move on. My real questions are 1) When I say if and else, should the if be true, does the else get completely ignored? 2) In theory would if (a and b and c) take as much time as the three separate if statements would?

• How to structure a Genetic Algorithm class hierarchy?

  I'm doing some work with Genetic Algorithms and want to write my own GA classes. Since a GA can have different ways of doing selection, mutation, cross-over, generating an initial population, calculating fitness, and terminating the algorithm, I need a way to plug in different combinations of these. My initial approach was to have an abstract class that had all of these methods defined as pure virtual, and any concrete class would have to implement them. If I want to try out two GAs that are the same but with different cross-over methods for example, I would have to make an abstract class that inherits from GeneticAlgorithm and implements all the methods except the cross-over method, then two concrete classes that inherit from this class and only implement the cross-over method. The downside to this is that every time I want to swap out a method or two to try out something new I have to make one or more new classes. Is there another approach that might apply better to this problem?

  So I see that there are a few Rails plugins for serving AMF. However, is there a library that I can use in a Ruby environment to act as an AMF client: to read AMF data, and deserialize it into a Ruby object? If not, how could I best go about using tools built in other languages? I suppose I could write something in Python or Java or whatever, and call it from Ruby directly via backticks... but I'd first like to ensure that there isn't really any better option. Thanks!

  So, with HTML5 giving us local SQL databases on the client side, if you want to write a select or insert, you no longer have the ability to sanitize third party input by saying $buddski = mysql_real_escape_string($tuddski) because the PHP parser and MySQL bridge are far away. It's a whole new world of SQLite where you compose your queries and parse your results with JavaScript. But while you may not have your whole site's database go down, the user who gets his/her database corrupted or wiped due to a malicious injection attack is going to be rather upset. So, what's the best way, in pure JavaScript, to escape/sanitize your inputs so they will not wreak havoc with your user's built-in database? Scriptlets? specifications? Anyone?

  I'm new to Android, but have published iphone and bberry apps. I see that I have to create an emulator using the SDK, before I can write and test an app. Why are there no default emulators? Why not at least a Nexus one, or HTC hero emulator shipped with the product? Sure its supposed to be flexible, but why not make it easy to create hello world and play around with a virtual Android phone? Both blackberry and iphone come with default simulators when you download the sdk. Thanks, Gerry

• I never really understood: what is CGI?

  CGI is a Comman Gateway Interface. As the name says, it is a "common" gateway interface for everything. It is so trivial and naive from the name. I feel that I understood this and I felt this every time I encountered this word. But frankly, I didn't. I'm still confused. I am a PHP programmer. I did lot of web development. user (client) request for page --- webserver(-embedded PHP interpreter) ---- Server side(PHP) Script --- MySQL Server. Now say my PHP Script can fetch results from MySQL Server && MATLAB Server && Some other server. So, now PHP Script is the CGI? because its interface for the between webserver & All other servers? I don't know. Sometimes they call CGI, a technology & othertimes they call CGI a program or someother server. What exactly is CGI? Whats the big deal with /cgi-bin/*.cgi? Whats up with this? I don't know what is this cgi-bin directory on the server for. I don't know why they have *.cgi extensions. Why does Perl always comes in the way. CGI & Perl (language). I also don't know whats up with these two. Almost all the time I keep hearing these two in combination "CGI & Perl". This book is another great example CGI Programming with Perl Why not "CGI Programming with PHP/JSP/ASP". I never saw such things. CGI Programming in C this confuses me a lot. in C?? Seriously?? I don't know what to say. I"m just confused. "in C"?? This changes everything. Program needs to be compiled and executed. This entirely changes my view of web programming. When do I compile? How does the program gets executed (because it will be a machine code, so it must execute as a independent process). How does it communicate with the web server? IPC? and interfacing with all the servers (in my example MATLAB & MySQL) using socket programming? I'm lost!! They say that CGI is depreciated. Its no more in use. Is it so? What is its latest update? Once, I ran into a situation where I had to give HTTP PUT request access to web server (Apache HTTPD). Its a long back. So, as far as I remember this is what I did: Edited the configuration file of Apache HTTPD to tell webserver to pass all HTTP PUT requests to some put.php ( I had to write this PHP script) Implement put.php to handle the request (save the file to the location mentioned) People said that I wrote a CGI Script. Seriously, I didn't have clue what they were talking about. Did I really write CGI Script? I hope you understood what my confusion is. (Because I myself don't know where I'm confused). I request you guys to keep your answer as simple as possible. I really can't understand any fancy technical terminology. At least not in this case.   Are there any libraries or tools specifically designed to help PHP programmers write Javascript? Essentially, converting the PHP logic into Javascript logic. • Is preg_match safe enaught in input satinization?

  Im building a new web-app, LAMP environment... im wondering if preg_match can be trusted for user's input validation (+ prepared stmt, of course) for all the text-based fields (aka not html fields; phone, name, surname, etc..). For example, for a classic 'email field', if i check the input like: $email_pattern = "/^([a-zA-Z0-9_\-\.]+)@((\[[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.)" . "|(([a-zA-Z0-9\-]+\.)+))([a-zA-Z]{2,4}" .
