  • Floating point arithmetic is too reliable.

    - by mcoolbeth
I understand that floating point arithmetic as performed in modern computer systems is not always consistent with real arithmetic. I am trying to contrive a small C# program to demonstrate this. eg: static void Main(string[] args) { double x = 0, y = 0; x += 20013.8; x += 20012.7; y += 10016.4; y += 30010.1; Console.WriteLine("Result: "+ x + " " + y + " " + (x==y)); Console.Write("Press any key to continue . . . "); Console.ReadKey(true); } However, in this case, x and y are equal in the end. Is it possible for me to demonstrate the inconsistency of floating point arithmetic using a program of similar complexity, and without using any really crazy numbers? I would like, if possible, to avoid mathematically correct values that go more than a few places beyond the decimal point.

  • Spinlocks, How Much Useful Are They?

    - by unknown
How often do you find yourself actually using spinlocks in your code? How common is it to come across a situation where using a busy loop actually outperforms the usage of locks? Personally, when I write some sort of code that requires thread safety, I tend to benchmark it with different synchronization primitives, and as far as it goes, it seems like using locks gives better performance than using spinlocks. No matter for how little time I actually hold the lock, the amount of contention I receive when using spinlocks is far greater than the amount I get from using locks (of course, I run my tests on a multiprocessor machine). I realize that it's more likely to come across a spinlock in "low-level" code, but I'm interested to know whether you find it useful in even a more high-level kind of programming?

  • django return file over HttpResonse - file is not served correctly

    - by Tom Tom
I want to return some files in a HttpResponse and I'm using the following function. The file that is returned always has a filesize of 1kb and I do not know why. I can open the file, but it seems that it is not served correctly. Thus I wanted to know how one can return files with django/python over a HttpResponse. @login_required def serve_upload_files(request, file_url): import os.path import mimetypes mimetypes.init() try: file_path = settings.UPLOAD_LOCATION + '/' + file_url fsock = open(file_path,"r") #fsock = open(file_path,"r").read() file_name = os.path.basename(file_path) mime_type_guess = mimetypes.guess_type(file_name) try: if mime_type_guess is not None: response = HttpResponse(mimetype=mime_type_guess[0]) response['Content-Disposition'] = 'attachment; filename=' + file_name response.write(fsock) finally: fsock.close() except IOError: response = HttpResponseNotFound() return response

  • Gracefully exiting from thread in Ruby

    - by jasonbogd
Hi, I am trying out Mongrel and using the following code: require 'rubygems' require 'mongrel' class SimpleHandler < Mongrel::HttpHandler def process(request, response) response.start(200) do |head, out| head["Content-Type"] = "text/plain" out.write("Hello World!\n") end end end h = Mongrel::HttpServer.new("0.0.0.0", "3000") h.register("/test", SimpleHandler.new) puts "Press Control-C to exit" h.run.join trap("INT") do puts "Exiting..." end Basically, this just prints out "Hello World!" when I go to localhost:3000/test. It works fine, and I can close the program with Control-C. But when I press Control-C, this gets outputted: my_web_server.rb:17:in `join': Interrupt from my_web_server.rb:17 So I tried putting that trap("INT") statement at the end, but it isn't getting called. Solution? Thanks.

  • Why does python use 'magic methods'?

    - by Greg Beech
I've been playing around with Python recently, and one thing I'm finding a bit odd is the extensive use of 'magic methods', e.g. to make its length available an object implements a method def __len__(self) and then it is called when you write len(obj). I was just wondering why objects don't simply define a len(self) method and have it called directly as a member of the object, e.g. obj.len()? I'm sure there must be good reasons for Python doing it the way it does, but as a newbie I haven't worked out what they are yet.

  • WorkflowMarkupSerializer doesn't keep positions in a state machine workflow

    - by Khadaji
    I am using WorkflowMarkupSerializer to save a statemachine workflow - it saves the states OK, but does not keep their positions. The code to write the workflow is here: using (XmlWriter xmlWriter = XmlWriter.Create(fileName)) { WorkflowMarkupSerializer markupSerializer = new WorkflowMarkupSerializer(); markupSerializer.Serialize(xmlWriter, workflow); } The code to read the workflow is: DesignerSerializationManager dsm = new DesignerSerializationManager(); using (dsm.CreateSession()) { using (XmlReader xmlReader = XmlReader.Create(fileName)) { //deserialize the workflow from the XmlReader WorkflowMarkupSerializer markupSerializer = new WorkflowMarkupSerializer(); workflow = markupSerializer.Deserialize( dsm, xmlReader) as Activity; if (dsm.Errors.Count > 0) { WorkflowMarkupSerializationException error = dsm.Errors[0] as WorkflowMarkupSerializationException; throw error; } } }

  • Using WCF authentication service for web application

    - by user200295
I am using a WCF authentication service I set up with a web application. I have successfully set up and tested the AuthenticationService and RolesService. The web application can successfully call methods like ValidateUser and GetRolesForCurrentUser through the WCF services. I want to integrate the WCF authentication service with my web.config and site.map. Do I need to write a custom provider, or is there some way I can modify the web.config of the web application to use the WCF authentication service as its membership provider? This way I can set what roles have access to what directories based off the WCF authentication service.

  • Using sub filters/queries in Google App Engine

    - by fredrik
Hi, I'm trying to use figure out how to sub query a query that uses a filter. From what I've figured out so far while using .filter() it changes the original query, that leads to a second .filter() would also have to match the first filter. I would like to make something like this: modules = data.Modules.all().filter('page = ', page.key()) modules.filter('name = ', 'Test') modules.filter('name = ', 'Test2') I can't get the "Test2" filter to work. The only solution I have at the moment is to make all new queries. data.Modules.all().filter('page = ', page.key()).filter('name = ', "Test").get() data.Modules.all().filter('page = ', page.key()).filter('name = ', "Test2").get() Or write the same as an GQL. But for me it seams quite stupid way to go. I've looked at using ancestors, but I don't quite understand it and honestly don't know if that's the way to go. Any ideas? ..fredrik

  • Sudoku solver evaluation function

    - by Rich
Hi, So I'm trying to write a simple genetic algorithm for solving a sudoku (not the most efficient way, I know, but it's just to practice evolutionary algorithms). I'm having some problems coming up with an efficient evaluation function to test if the puzzle is solved or not and how many errors there are. My first instinct would be to check if each row and column of the matrix (doing it in octave, which is similar to matlab) have unique elements by ordering them, checking for duplicates and then putting them back the way they were, which seems long winded. Any thoughts? Sorry if this has been asked before...

  • What's the best method to be overloaded in ViewPage for inserting some script to all ViewPage?

    - by Soul_Master
I want to insert some script that is required for my JavaScript library in all view pages. I know that Asp.net MVC is built on Asp.net Framework. Therefore, I can override many methods in “System.Web.UI.Page” class that is a parent of “System.Web.Mvc.ViewPage” class. Nevertheless, I can do it by override Render method but it makes all view pages be invalid for XHTML 1.0 strict. Correct JavaScript must be placed in header tag of HTML document. public class ViewPage<TModel> : ViewPage where TModel : class { protected override void Render(System.Web.UI.HtmlTextWriter writer) { base.Render(writer); writer.Write("<script type='text/javascript>applicationPath = window.applicationPath = 'somePath';</script>"); } } Thanks, PS. I know I can create some code in each master page for doing that. However, it is a quite complicate for other developers to start using my JavaScript source code.

  • Multi Select Checkbox using ListView

    - by Parsa
    I have a CheckBox in the header of ListView. I write a code to select all Checkboxes in ItemTemplate automatically when the user select the checkBox in the header of ListView. This code is useful, when you bind your ListView in DataPager_PreRender. protected void DataPager1_PreRender(object sender, EventArgs e) { //get the user id of the current user Guid userGuid = (Guid)Membership.GetUser().ProviderUserKey; ListView1.DataSource = MyClass.MyStaticMethod(userGuid.ToString()); ListView1.DataBind(); } protected void ListView1_ItemCreated(object sender, ListViewItemEventArgs e) { //Find the checkBox in each Row CheckBox checkBoxRow = e.Item.FindControl("CheckBoxRow") as CheckBox; //Assign the value of checkBoxHeader to the checkBoxRow checkBoxRow.Checked = CheckBoxHeader.Checked; } protected void ListView1_PagePropertiesChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { // assign false value to the CheckBoxHeader when user click on the DataPager // so if checkboxheader is true in the page 1, when user select Page 2,this check box will be false // therefore all checkbox rows will be false in the new page. if (CheckBoxHeader.Checked == true) CheckBoxHeader.Checked = false; }

  • Writing a rails validator with integer

    - by user297008
I was trying to write a validation for Rails to ensure that a price entered on a form was greater than zero. It works…sort of. The problem is that when I run it, val is turned into an integer, so it thinks that .99 is less than .1. What's going on, and how should I fix the code? class Product < ActiveRecord::Base protected def self.validates_greater_than_zero(*attr_names) validates_each(attr_names) do |record, attr, val| record.errors.add(attr, "should be at least 0.01 (current val = #{val.to_f})") if val.nil? || val < 0.01 end end public validates_presence_of :title, :description, :image_url validates_numericality_of :price validates_greater_than_zero :price end

  • How can I use an Ant foreach iteration with values from a file?

    - by Egon Willighagen
In our Ant build environment, I have to do the same task for a number of items. The AntContrib foreach task is useful for that. However, the list is in a parameter, where I actually have the list in a file. How can I iterate over items in a file in an foreach-like way in Ant? Something like (pseudo-code): <foreach target="compile-module" listFromFile="$fileWithModules"/> I'm happy to write a custom Task, and welcome any suggestion on possible solutions.

But does not actually add anything into the database table "staff" ? I must be missing something obvious here.

I have a shell script, which is run under a opensuse linux, that starts a java application (under a jar), the script is: #!/bin/sh #export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/java #PATH=/usr/local/java/bin:${PATH} #---------------------------------# # dynamically build the classpath # #---------------------------------# THE_CLASSPATH= for i in `ls ./lib/*.jar` do THE_CLASSPATH=${THE_CLASSPATH}:${i} done #---------------------------# # run the application # #---------------------------# java -server -Xms512M -Xmx1G -cp ".:${THE_CLASSPATH}" com.package.MyApp > myApp.out 2>&0 & This script is working fine. Now, what I want, is to write a script to kill gracefully this app, something that allows me to kill it with the -15 argument from Linux kill command. The problem, is that there will be many java applications running on this server, so I need to specifically kill this one. Any help? Thanks in advance, Fernando

  • In linux, is there a way to set a default permission for newly created files and directories under a

    - by David Dean
I have a bunch of long-running scripts and applications that are storing output results in a directory shared amongst a few users. I would like a way to make sure that every file and directory created under this shared directory automatically had u=rwxg=rwxo=r permissions. I know that I could use umask 006 at the head off my various scripts, but I don't like that approach as many users write their own scripts and may forget to set the umask themselves. I really just want the filesystem to set newly created files and directories with a certain permission if it is in a certain folder. Is this at all possible? Update: I think it can be done with POSIX ACLs, using the Default ACL functionality, but it's all a bit over my head at the moment. If anybody can explain how to use Default ACLs it would probably answer this question nicely.

  • Nhibernate Criteria Ignore Child Collection

    - by CocoB
I have a simple one to many association in my model. The parent class has a collection of children. In the mapping files, the association is a one to many, eager-loaded, using fetchmode.join. This works fine, but how can I write a criteria query but NOT trigger the loading of the child collection? In other words, I want to query the parent and not have it generate the join in the resulting sql. I tried setting the fetch mode to lazy, but in that case Nhibernate generates two separate queries. I don't want the table for child queried at all.

  • Delete a line from a file in java

    - by dalton conley
Ok, so I'm trying to delete lines from a text file with java. Currently the way I'm doing this, is I'm keep track of a line number and inputting an index. The index is the line I want deleted. So each time I read a new line of data I increment the line count. Now when I reach the line count that is the same index, I dont write the data to the temporary file. Now this works, but what if for example I'm working with huge files and I have to worry about memory restraints. How can I do this with.. file markers? For example.. place the file marker on the line I want to do delete. Then delete that line? Or is that just too much work?

  • How to recursively serialize an object using reflection ?

    - by Tony
I want to navigate to the N-th level of an object, and serialize it's properties in String format. For Example: class Animal { public String name; public int weight; public Animal friend; public Set<Animal> children = new HashSet<Animal>() ; } should be serialized like this: {name:"Monkey", weight:200, friend:{name:"Monkey Friend",weight:300 ,children:{...if has children}}, children:{name:"MonkeyChild1",weight:100,children:{... recursively nested}} } And you may probably notice that it is similar to serializing an object to json. I know there're many libs can do this, can you give me some instructive ideas on how to write this?

  • Copy a linked list

    - by emkrish
typedef struct Node { int data; Node *next; Node *other; }; Node *pHead; pHead is a singly linked list. The next field points to the next element in the list. The other field may point to any other element (could be one of the previous nodes or one of the nodes ahead) in the list or NULL. How does one write a copy function that duplicates the linked list and its connectivity? None of the elements (next and other) in the new list should point to any element in the old list.

  • Delphi overwrite existing file on save dialog

    - by AfterImage
Hello everyone, I am using the TSaveDialog component to save a file from a button click. However, I am having trouble with saving on an existing file name. Generally, when you want to save over an existing file in Windows, a message box pops up asking you if you really want to overwrite the file. This is not the case with the TSaveDialog component and it will go ahead and write over the file without asking. I was hoping there was a TSaveDialog function or event that I could use but I have not seen anything that looks like it handles this. So it could be that I simplely haven't found the correct method to use. If there is an event, I could use if FileExists(saveDialog.FileName) then //and so forth but the events TSaveDialog has are OnCanClose, OnClose, OnFolderChange, OnIncludeItem, OnSelectionChange, OnShow, OnTypeChange... My question is, how do I pop up a message box to ask the user if they want to overwrite the existing file using the TSaveDialog component. Thanks.
