• How can I automate FTP downloads based on date without bi-directional syncing?

  I have a particular FTP-related situation that I'm having trouble finding a solution for. I need an FTP download/syncing application that can operate within the following parameters: It must run under Windows (installing Python to be able to run a script or some such thing is an acceptable solution). It must be able to ignore files before a certain date (I want to start downloading new files, not all the files that exist in this very large FTP directory). I don't want bi-directional syncing (e.g. I don't want changes I make to the local files and directory structure to change the remote FTP server, the FTP server needs to be left completely alone). Automating it in some fashion would be ideal. What would you guys suggest? The solutions I'm turning up are all missing the mark in some fashion (e.g. they have bi-directional syncing or they have no way of starting the syncing today instead of trying to pull down the entire directory).

• Windows XP stay logged in

  Is there a way to make Windows XP stay logged in even after the user logs off? Right now the PCs log in at start up and we're using WinOFF to shut down the computer after X minutes of inactivity. The problem is that WinOFF does not work when the user logs off and stays in the "Select user login" screen. I'm thinking a possible solution would be to make the computer log back in as the default user after Y minutes of inactivity. How can I make it so that Windows XP logs in automatically after the user logs off?

• Redirecting X output

  Hi, I have a small program that checks some elements of a web service. The program shows graphics output and displays commmand-line results as well. I have been trying to automate this program to run periodically on a server in my office. Problem is, It only works when I have X enabled - either directly on the server, or via ssh -X. Following Google, I have tried Xvfb, which gave me quite cryptic error message: Xvfb :1 -screen 0 1600x1200x32 Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 1 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X1-lock and start again. Any ideas how to run it? I'm actually looking for the X equivalent of &>/dev/null... Thanks in advance, Adam

• Windows 7 Keeps Changing the MBR on boot

  I am having an issue with Windows 7 changing the boot order everytime I start up. I have 4 partitions: boot linux windows. Grub is installed on the boot, and boots up both operating systems fine, however when I boot to Windows the bootable partition is changed to Windows and the MBR is rewritten. How do I stop this? Its rather annoying to have to boot, chroot and fix this problem everytime. I also don't want to use the Windows boot select.

• Only one user at once through remote

  Hi, This is probably an easy question for anyone used to servers, and I know I once managed to do it, but I don't remember how. I purchased a VPS and am able to connect correctly as Administrator, and can start, let's say, MyServer.exe. Problem is, if I connect as Administrator on another device, this process is still there, but I can't see it. What I want to do is limit the connection per user to 1, and disconnect others when one logs in. I know there was a simpler term, a simple way, but I truly don't remember. And since I'm not used to the vocabulary of servers, I couldn't find it in the S/F questions. Thanks in advance!

• ls returns nothing only in certain directories

  I have a raid drive mounted here: /data/ And certain directories like this one: /data/somedir/somesubdir/ when I run ls w/ or w/o any flags, terminal doesn't return anything. It does not return an empty directory listing. It simply goes to the next line and sits there blank with no prompt coming up. I cannot CTRL-C out of it. I have to close this terminal instance and start over. At first I thought it was something to do with the ls command, but its pointing to /bin/ls and I can ls other directories just fine. Also, running this find /data/somedir/somesubdir immediately finds all the files just as expected.

• Can I use a Mac Mini as a web server and database server? What are the pros and cons?

  We are a bootstrapped web start up. We have a LAMP web application that we expect relatively low to mid traffic because users need an account to log in. Our current approach is to colocate two servers, a web and mysql database server. We are planning to use Ubuntu Server 9.04. We have shopped around for dedicated servers but the price range from $900 to $1500 per month, therefore we are exploring the colocation approach. We are considering purchasing two Mac Minis (2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 2 Gb RAM) because we are familiar with the machines are the prices are relatively inexpensive. What are the pros and cons of using these 'non-server' grade machines? We would install Ubuntu Sever and attach firewire external hard drives. Any advice on how to set up 'good-and-economic' web/database servers is welcomed.

• Configure Mouse Buttons for "Administrator"/Elevated privileges

  I am, for better or worse, an administrator on my Windows 7 machine. However, even then, I still need to run certain programs "as Administrator" - for example, Visual Studio 2008 when working with local IIS sites. I also like to have the extra buttons on my IntelliMouse Optical doing non-standard things, like representing Ctrl and Shift. However, when in VS running as administrator, these settings aren't picked up, just like my mapped drives aren't picked up - I would understand this if I was logging in as a different user, supplying credentials, etc, but I'm not, I'm just pressing "Yes" at the UAC prompt. Normally, I'd just right click the item in the start menu and select "Run as administrator", but that's not an option on the context menu for either the Microsoft IntelliPoint Mouse application that appears under "Programs", nor the "Mouse" control panel item. Running the control panel as administrator also doesn't seem to help. So has any one got any suggestions on how I can configure my mouse buttons for the elevated version of me that Visual Studio is running as?

• Bad I/O scheduler?

  os: up-to-date Fedora 14. Working as a "normal desktop". It's doing very well, but if i start VirtualBox, and e.g.: install a guest on it, it just "freezez". I mean if there are disk activities on a VirtualBox guest, then the computer becomes unrespondable..even the mouse is laggin for about 50 minutes.. What could be the bottleneck? What could be the problem? If anyone has any tips/howtos to speed it up, please help! It has a normal 2,5" HDD, with 5400 RPM. Does it worth for me if i buy a 2,5" HDD with 7200 RPM? T7200 cpu, 4 GByte RAM, "vm.swappiness = 0". Thank you!

• Windows 8 won't boot after Boot Repair

  I've got a Sony Vaio laptop. Until yesterday I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 installed. Today I upgraded to Windows 8, which killed my OS selection screen. So I booted to Ubuntu 12.10 from a USB stick and ran Boot Repair. This recovered the GRUB screen and let me boot into my Ubuntu 12.04 installation, but now I can' boot Windows 8. When I select the option that booted Windows 7 before, it looks like it wants to start Windows 7 (sic) again (black screen, with the text "Windows is loading" or something), but then reboots the machine after a few seconds. I'm sure Boot Repair can fix this, but I know far too little about the whole booting thing to know the right settings for it. Here's my boot repair report thing.

• Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

  I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. • Shut Down took way too long because of "Background Programs"

  I tried shutting my desktop PC (with Windows7) down but after several attempts (like 4 or 5) at Start -- Shut Down, the GUI was still there and it was not shutting down. I didn't think there were any programs running when I pressed Shut Down, so I went into the taskbar (Ctrl + Alt + Del) to check out the processes. Once I did that, a screen appeared with a message stating that there are "background programs" still running and it gave me an option to "Force Shut Down" which I pressed and it shut down normally. Does anyone know why this would happen?

  Update #3: Starting over from scratch, shortened this post, decided to re-install a clean copy of Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and go through the walk-through again. So, all the steps go without a hitch.   To serve static content of a directory over http, one can simply navigate to that directory and type: python -m SimpleHTTPServer 11111 which will start a http server on port 11111. This hack is nice because it requires zero-config: no stand-alone web server, no config files at all. Is it possible to extend this example, or have an alternate way to achieve this goal, but also have CGI support? The final goal is to have a quick and lazy way of serving a web site from a certain directory. The site has static content (HTML pages, images), but also a CGI script. The CGI script must work properly when accessed via browser. Of course I could setup a virtual host in apache, allow CGI inside it etc. But that's not a zero-config approach.

• How to stop S.M.A.R.T check running for external hard drive

  I am using Windows 7 and I have enabled my "S.M.A.R.T" check, too. I have bought an external 1 TB USB hard drive. When it is connected with my computer, it delays my machine initial start with about 4-5 minutes. I was very confused at the begging, then disable the "S.M.A.R.T" check and see that the computer runs normally after restart. So, here is what I want to know: Why the check is turn for the external disk? Is there a way to use the "S.M.A.R.T" check only for my main hard drive? Why it takes 4 to 5 minutes more, as my both hard drives - internal/external are 1 TB?

• Acer aspire 5520 power light blinks no boot

  My laptop was working fine last night, I hibernated it and went to sleep. Got up, pressed the power button. The power light comes on for 4 seconds and the hdd light blinked a few times, then it turned off for a second then repeats the process. The only way to stop this process/power down is to remove the AC and take out the battery. It does not even reach a boot screen, nothing shows up on the screen, fan does not start. People on this forum has the same problem but they suggest to put the laptop in a oven and heat it (reflow). What could be the problem? Is there another solution other than a reflow? I dont feel like putting my motherboard in the oven.

• Confirm disk is broken when it passes all diagnostics

  I have a system with a potentially broken disk, but the disk passes all manner of diagnostics. I have been unable to confirm that the disk is broken. What are my options? I could just replace the disk, but because this situation is very similar to another more severe situation I have (long story), I'd like to actually make a proper diagnosis as opposed to randomly binning hardware. The issue and history is this: I had a Debian Linux PC (500 MHz P3) acting as router, nagios and munin. It crashed every couple of weeks. No logs or dmesg could be obtained (because it's an old Compaq that only boots when you configure it as keyboardless, making connecting a keyboard later, once it's booted, impossible). At the time, I just replaced the computer with another Compaq (P4 2.4 GHz) because I thought the hardware was faulty. However, it still crashed every couple of weeks. the difference is that on this computer, I can still SSH into it. It gives all kinds of errors on hda. I'd like to confirm that the disk is broken, but nothing I do confirms this: SMART error logs shows no errors. Normally when a disk starts acting up, SMART my pass, but it still records a read-error in the error log. SMART self-test (smartctl -t long /dev/sda) completes without errors. re-allocated sector count (a tell-tale parameter) has been 31 all its life, even when the disk was still in use in my desktop PC years ago, and it still is. The figure never changed. dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/null bs=4096 passes with flying colors. What else can I do to assess the health of the drive? Again, this is not about making this router fully functional again, this is a disk forensic question, because it just so happens that I have another server that potentially has the same problem, and knowing the answer to this will possibly help me greatly. For the record, below are logs and such. • Chrome browser caching

  I do a lot of development on my local machine and would like to start using Chrome, however I cannot seem to do a hard-refresh (ctrl+f5) or any other key combination to get my browser to forcibly refresh all content @ http://localhost. I change projects frequently in IIS and this presents a problem because I see stylesheet and image data from my previous project with no way to get this page to reload without forcibly dumping all cache data from the settings menu. Is there another key combination I am missing, or is there a place I can (on a site by site basis) turn off caching? I prefer not to have to clear out my temporary files in the browser settings as I switch projects frequently. Thanks, Kyle

• Creating an app pool a month to limit the scope of issues

  I have about 360 sites running on a single app pool. Now I know we have a coding issue with one of those sites, were we have accidentally coded a memory leak. So what happens is the site runs, the memory leak starts and soon the app pool runs out of memory. Then slowly but surely, the rest of the 360 sites start going down like a domino affect. I understand that the root of the problem is some bad coding, which we'll fix, but instead of bringing down said 360 sites, I was thinking, we could create a new app-pool monthly that every site we create would go into that months app pool. First, that limit the scope of the issues to 5 - 20 sites and second if one site started having issues we wouldn't be bringing down all 360 sites. Is there any issues to this thinking, possible ramifications? Thanks in Advance! Jeremiah

• IIS7 defaulting to default.php instead of default.aspx

  Hi guys. My client has just got a new dedicated server running Win2008 (we had 2003 before), II7, etc. I started setting a little ASP.NET 2.0 web application we have. Running on its own AppPool 2.0. The problem is that when I browse the site root (locally or remotely), I get 404 because the url now points to http://domain/default.php, when it should be default.aspx. Yes, I've checked the Defaults Documents settins for the website and I deleted everything but default.aspx (default.php was not even listed). To finish, I'll say that if I navigate to http://domain/default.aspx, the site works perfectly and I can follow links without problem. Any idea why is this happening? Or at least where I should start looking? Thanks!

• Secondary drive corrupted/not reading

  When I connect my Seagate Barracuda to the computer, it shows up on the list of drives in Windows Explorer, but right clicking on it crashes Windows Explorer, opening it won't do anything, and I cannot start disk manager when it is connected. Trying to search the drive also freezes Windows Explorer. I have tried to run CHKDSK on it, and it was "unable to read $J data stream" for the Usn Journal. Also, it was an internal drive, but I pulled it out and hooked it up externally so I could test if it was that drive causing the problems. Is there any way for me to copy the files off of the drive?
