• How can I leave the remote screen locked when I ARD/VNC/etc. to my Mac?

  I'm currently using Jolly's Fast VNC and Mac OS X's built-in VNC server (System Preferences, Sharing, Screen Sharing) to access my iMac remotely. Here's my problem: When I'm using the iMac remotely, the screensaver deactivates and the screen is unlocked. If someone had physical access to my iMac they could walk up to it and start using it. Is there some way I can set things up so that when I'm using my iMac remotely the screen stays locked, like Windows XP Professional does when you're using RDP? I know I can use X remotely with the iMac locked, but I would like to use Mac applications remotely, too.

• Easy Linux distribution with newer packages than Ubuntu?

  I'm a programmer and sysadmin, and I'm looking for a better Linux distro to use than Ubuntu. It certainly is a well-polished, nice distribution to use, but a lot of the programs available in the Ubuntu repositories are very old versions. Installing PPA's or compiling from source just isn't very nice. I'd love to use something like Arch Linux that uses a rolling release cycle, but I really don't want to configure my system from scratch, and support for ATI Catalyst drivers is necessary. I just want to pop the CD in, install and start using my computer - just like with Ubuntu. Additionally, if you know of a package like ubuntu-restricted-extras for the distribution, that'd be nice! What do you suggest?

I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

• My Intel Core i3 frequently shuts down due to "Processor Thermal Trip error"

  My Desktop PC running Windows 7 on Intel Core i3 dual processor machine started shutting down during the boot process a couple of days ago. I left it alone for about 48 hours and tried again. The boot process informed me about Processor Thermal Trip as being the cause of boot failures and suggested a Windows recovery process. I went through the recovery process which completed without problems. The PC booted normally and Windows 7 worked as expected but after 10 minutes it again tripped and now whenever I start it, it shuts down during the boot process. What should I do next?... is there a boot menu / setup settings that needs to be adjusted to avoid it... Or is there a hardware problem (which seems unlikely as the machine occasionally boots perfectly )?

• How can we achive a 403 Permissions Denied for a subdomain?

  We have a multisite installed in the root directory (multisite.com) and also a wordpress single installation on a subdomain (help.multisite.com) In the root .htaccess we placed: #START Security: Disallow access to folders Options All -Indexes # END Security On the main site (as expected we get) "403 Permission Denied. You do not have permission for this request /wp-content/blogs.dir/83/" Nice. :) BUT. We just noticed that when trying to access the subdomains folders we get: Internal Server Error. The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.... Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error... This is something we do NOT want. So the question is: How can we avoid the above result and make the message for the subdomains be "403 Permission Denied" (the same as for the main site and NOT "500 Internal Server Error" (as it is now)? We put what, where?

• Stop external USB keyboard repeating key presses on Vista.

  We have an infuriating problem with a (Vista/Dell) laptop. When an external (Logitech) USB keyboard is attached to it, it regularly starts repeating key presses. When the user recently deleted an Outlook message, it deleted them all! When typing a message, suddenly it will start repeating the last keypress about 30 times (it varies). It's not a mechanical issue. We've switched the keyboard out four times. Even tried a brand new one one. Every time it's the same. Also, the keyboard works fine on other machines. The problem doesn't arise when the laptop's own keyboard is used - even if the external USB keyboard is still attached. I'm stumped? Any ideas. Not using an external keyboard isn't an option due to our health and safety policy (...don't ask...).

  I want to set up an Astaro (Sophos) UTM in a Virtual Machine. The Setup should be at the end the following: Cable Modem (one IP adress) | [Ethernet] Sophos UTM (running as VM [VMWare Fusion 5] on the MacMini) | [WIFI] Airport Express v2 (for sharing Local Network to wireless and wired clients) 1)| [WIFI] 2)| [Ethernet over Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter]* Clients MacMini (Local File Server) *To have the Mini also protected behind the UTM So the setup process for the UTM works fine, but then the problems start: I just have one external IP (from my cable modem provider)== So if I put the VM in briged mode my Internet connection drops, because the MacMini also has its IP adress. If I put the VM to NAT mode the Mini itself is not protected by the UTM So: is there a way to hide the en0 interface(Ethernet) and the en1 interface (Wifi) from the MacMini, so that they not even appear in System Preferences Network section but are available to the VM? That way the Mini must connect to the en2 interface (Thunderbolt adapter) to make any Internet/LAN connection and I just use the given single IP from the Cable Modem. Thaks for any suggestions...   Hi all, How do I find all installed apache and PHP occurences on a Mac OS X system in bash and uninstall them? My motivation: I've managed to install multiple apache and PHP packages (I believe it's called packages in Unix terms, correct?) at some point, and I'ld like to start out fresh again, without completely re-installing Mac OS X again. Also, I'ld like to install suPHP along with apache this time, and I believe I need to compile apache with some additional stuff for that. • Monitor HTTP usage on network from Linux free

  I manage a small office network. I am looking to start monitoring/logging internet usage (website requests) for each user on a small network. All the windows clients are running through a switch to a BT router. I also have a linux (centos) machine which is connected as a client to the BT router as well. Is there any free software I can install on the linux box (or my own machine) to allow me to log and monitor websites requested by users kind of like browser history. • Medion Akoya E5211 won't boot up or go into BIOS

  My Medion Akoya kept getting a blue screen and shutting down. Now when I try and restart the laptop, I just get a blank screen with a flashing _ in the top left corner. It doesnt beep when turned on – only if I press buttons. It doesn't give me the option to start BIOS or set up. I have tried pressing F8, F12, F2 and F3 but still nothing happens. It just goes to the the black screen with the flashing _ It is running Windows Visa Home Basic.

• XenServer 6.2 crashes everytime I try to install a new Windows 7 x64 vm

  I'm running XenServer 6.2 with all patches and updates on two boxes. One box is an intel core i7 2600K.. works great. My latest box is an AMD A10 APU.. and everytime I try to install Windows 7 OS as a guest.. I get to the screen where Windows files start to expand, and suddenly the entire box freezes up. Is there a log I can check, and or a way to migrate a working Windows 7 image I created on Box 1 over to Box 2?

  What is the correct way to set the optimizer index cost adj parameter for Oracle. As a developer I have observed huge performance improvements as this parameter is lowered. Common queries are reduced from 2 seconds to 200ms. There are lots of warnings on the net that lowering this value will cause dire issues with the database, but no detail is given on what will start going wrong. I am currently only seeing only an upside, much improved application performance and no downside. I need to better understand the possible negative repercussions of adjusting these parameters.

  I'm trying to install PostgreSQL 8.3 on Debian Lenny (kernel 2.6.26-2-686) using the package manager: sudo apt-get install postgresql-8.3 postgresql-client-8.3 postgresql-contrib-8.3 postgresql-common When deploying the package postgresql-common, the following warning is displayed: supported_versions: WARNING: Unknown Debian release: 5.0.4 I wonder if this is related to the problem I describe below. Next I try to launch the database server but it doesn't have any effect, neither any logs are generated. sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start Does anybody have a clue of what might be going on?

• Proffesional video editor that can handle FLV?

  I tried Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and was not able to open my file (unsupported format). Media player can open it thanks to ffdshow (tryouts IIRC). Premiere doesnt seem to want to use ffdshow. I tried renaming it to AVI and hoped Premiere would open it via ffdshow but it didnt and i checked and disabled the dont use ffdshow option in ffdshow video decoder option. What is a good proffesional video editor that can handle FLV? All ffmpeg based editors died on it and virtualdub got close but had a bad framerate. Probably bc it didnt know it was a streaming vid and the start is 26mins of 31min video. • Howto return to virtual machine when remote desktop hangs?

  I'm using a vmware virtual machine running ubuntu linux and from there I connect to a Windows XP machine using rdesktop through a VPN tunnel. This configuration is given and cannot be changed. From time to time my internet connection does a reconnect. Then the running rdesktop (running in fullscreen mode) process freezes and isn't usable anymore. Now I want to return to the underlying linux and restart the rdesktop process. But I'm not able to get out of fullscreen rdesktop mode and so I cannot access the ubuntu desktop to kill any process. My solution is to reboot the vmware and start the rdesktop again. Is there a better way to get the configuration running again after a freeze? EDIT: I have no admin rights for the linux system. Everything must be done with user rights.

• Mount shared folder (vbox) as another user

  I'm trying to mount my vbox shared folder every time my ubuntu starts. So, I added an entry on /etc/init with this: description "mount vboxsf Desktop" start on startup task exec mount -t vboxsf Desktop /var/www/shared Seems to work, except by the fact that all the files are owned by "root", and I don't have permission to write on the folder (neither chmod nor chown seems to be working). So, how can I make all the files under this shared folder to be owned by www-data user/group? Thanks ps.: The main reason for me to have an automatic shared folder, is so I can create/edit files from the HOST on the GUEST www folder. If you have a better idea for that, instead of sharing the folder, fell free to say.

• asus eee pc 1018p os installation

  My friend has an asus eee pc 1018p. It has no cd/dvd drive (neither do he have a usb cd/dvd drive). The OS wasn't working fine, so we decided to restore the system using the provided OS backup from HD. But midway to installation it was interrupted and the computer was restarted (not h/w or s/w issue but we did it). Now we cannot run the backup and we also tried to install windows 7 through USB, but as soon as we start to install the OS, it says that some device driver is missing. It turns out that the OS needs usb device driver to continue. It has USB 3.0 maybe thats why the OS needs the driver. I tried disabling 3.0 and enabling 2.0 but then it does not boot from USB drive for some reason. We are stuck with this. The backup doesn't runs and when booting from USB it says that it needs device driver. Anyone has any idea what we should do?

Because when sth.bat is run, i see a cmd.exe and java.exe in process list. I have to use the process name with "pskill \computerA processName". But i have more than one applications named cmd.exe and java.exe. How can i solve this problem?

  I temporarily installed an old Creative Audigy 2 soundboard on my Vista x64 Home Premium computer. Bad idea! I uninstalled the board & all software visible on the control panel. Now, with one particular app. (Sibelius) I keep getting a start-up message "CTASIO Warning: Creative ASIO: there are no Creative audio products installed on the system that support ASIO". I offer this as a candidate for "Most useless message", but that's beside the point. I used a commercial registry cleaner (PC-Tools Registry Mechanic) and then edited the registry looking for "creative", "audigy" and "ASIO". After removing everything I could find, I still get the message. Any suggestions?

It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Cannot boot from windows 7 DVD

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work.
