• tar incremental backup is backing everything up, every time when used on the Dropbox directory

  I made an incremental backup about 10 months ago (on Jan 27, 2013), creating a .snar metadata file. Now, when I try to make an incremental backup using tar --create --file=dropbox_incremental_1.tar --listed-incremental=dropbox_0.snar Dropbox the command just re-backs up everything. I'm not an expert at Unix timestamps, but I noticed that virtually all of my directory timestamps are way more recent than the last time they changed. For my actual files, they look like this: Access: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.000000000 -0500 Modify: 2012-09-30 15:10:47.000000000 -0500 Change: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.306209672 -0500 The 'Modify' timestamp seems correct, but the files were definitely not changed (at least not doing anything that I know of) at the time they say they were. These files still seem to go into the incremental archive. What's happening here? Is there a way to tell tar to look at the 'modify' timestamp? Isn't this what it's supposed to be doing?

• How to reference other locations in making multi-boot live cd

  There is a tool in pen drive linux that allows you to boot directly with multiple iso files. And here is a sample in the menu.lst which allows you to choose which iso file you want to boot. title Fedora 13 find --set-root /Fedora-12-i686-L.iso map /ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso (0xff) map --hook root (0xff) kernel /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed boot=casper persistent iso-scan/filename=/ubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso splash initrd /casper/initrd.lz I'm just using it on my 8gb flash drive and the location of the iso file is in the flash drive itself. Is it possible to reference other locations. So that I could boot from it, without limitations. because the flash drive can only contain 8gb of data. Is it possible? Anyone here tried this before?

• When gaming computer freezes with a blank screen and a buzzing sound

  I have a problem with random freezes when playing games. Sometimes it's fine for hours, other times it dosn't last even one. I tried googling around and I found recomendations to update my graphics drivers and to test for overheating. The graphics drivers haven't helped worked and Furmark created a consistant heat higher than I get during a crash. I even tried running a game using the Linux dual boot and WINE, that crashed too. Here are the tempreture logs leading up to the latest crash. The GPU dosn't hit 80, and I've hit 90 with no crash on firmark.   We have a server with a memory issue: the server keeps allocating itself memory and doesn't release it. We're running Apache. I set MaxReqsPerClient to a really low value just so the threads don't hold a lot of memory, but has anyone seen calls like this?   Is there a BitTorrent client that can download files "in sequence"? For example, download clip 01.avi (high priority) clip 02.avi (normal priority) clip 03.avi (low priority) clip 04.avi (low) clip 05.avi (low) then when clip 01.avi is done, it will automatically make it: clip 01.avi (high priority) clip 02.avi (high priority) clip 03.avi (normal priority) clip 04.avi (low priority) clip 05.avi (low) this can be useful when download *.rar as well, since download clip.rar, and then clip.r00, r01, r02, in sequence can allow previewing the file by using RAR to recompose the file (even though incomplete file, but will allow previewing). Update: will making all files active still considered a bad use of BT?

• ffmpeg add two audio streams to video

  I tried this: ffmpeg -i /sdcard/video/transcode/video.avi -map 0:0,0 -i /sdcard/video/transcode/first.mp3 -map 1:0,1 -i /sdcard/video/transcode/second.mp3 -map 2:0,2 -acodec copy -vcodec py /sdcard/video/transcode/Output.avi to add two audio streams to one video file. But ffmpeg says the number of mappings should match the number of output streams. What is wrong here? I'm trying to work with an Android build of FFmepg "ffmpeg for android beta". "Does not work" means that this uncommunicative Android build of FFmpeg just stops without giving any error message. The -codec copy option does not work with this build. Now I tried the same set of files with the FFmpeg called command line tool that comes with Ubuntu 10. Something (can't say where it is from). The -codec copy option does not work with this FFmpeg too.   I have Linux on an embedded system. There is no graphic system, but I still have graphic errors. For example, if I type: ifconfig eth2 hw ether 00:0e:8c:d0:59:d2 I see: ifconfig eth hw ether 00:0e:8:2:2 If I type Enter, it accepts the command I typed, so it's just a matter of displaying. Everything is fine, when I log in via SSH. Anyone any ideas, what could be the cause or where to look at? • How should I deploy my JVM-based web application on ubuntu?

  I've developed a web application using clojure/compojure (JVM based) and while developing I tested it using embedded jetty that runs on 0.0.0.0:8080. I would now like to deploy it to run on port 80 on ubuntu. I do dynamic virtual hosting, so any request for any host that arrives on port 80 should be handled by my application. The issues that worries me are: I can still run it embedded but I'm worried about running my app as root (needed for binding to port 80). I'm not sure if I can 'give up root' when in the JVM. Do I need to be concerned by this? besides, serving web applications is a known problem and I should be using known solutions for this (jetty or tomcat) but especially tomcat seems very heavy weight. Besides, I only have one application that listens to /* and does routing internally. (with compojure/ring). What I'm trying to say with this is that tomcat by default assigns WARs to subfolders which I don't want. So basically what I need is some very safe way of binding to port 80 on ubuntu that can with minimal interference send all requests to my app. Any ideas?

  I've got Ubuntu 9.10 on a Dell Vostro 420 desktop, a little over a year old, which I use for plain vanilla work stuff (email, web, terminal, text editor). Every now and then, at totally random times, it completely freezes on me. Hard. Mouse and keyboard stop working, cursor stops blinking, clock stops moving. All I can do is hold down the power button on the front of the box to shut it off. Sometimes it happens after several months of continuous uptime; sometimes it happens a few minutes after a reboot, while all I've done is open a terminal to look at log files, or maybe firefox to do a google search. Each time, there is nothing at all in /var/log/messages at the time of the crash. This makes it seem like a hardware problem, and indeed a few months ago I opened the box and wiggled everything and the problem went away for a while. But now it's back. I went in and checked everything, took out each RAM card and reseated. No luck. I ran all the system diagnostics (the long version) and everything passed with flying colors. Something is messed up in this box, but without any useful logs or failed tests, how in the world am I going to find it? And of course, Dell's not gonna help me cause I went and replaced Windows with Ubuntu. What steps would you take next to track down this problem?

• rsync does't work

  I set up a new ec2 ubuntu server and I'm unable to use rsync to push a file up. I can ssh to the machine with my keypair. • tar incremental backup is backing everything up, every time

  I made an incremental backup about 10 months ago (on Jan 27, 2013), creating a .snar metadata file. Now, when I try to make an incremental backup using tar --create --file=dropbox_incremental_1.tar --listed-incremental=dropbox_0.snar Dropbox the command just re-backs up everything. I'm not an expert at Unix timestamps, but I noticed that virtually all of my directory timestamps are way more recent than the last time they changed. For my actual files, they look like this: Access: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.000000000 -0500 Modify: 2012-09-30 15:10:47.000000000 -0500 Change: 2013-03-12 19:04:51.306209672 -0500 The 'Modify' timestamp seems correct, but the files were definitely not changed (at least not doing anything that I know of) at the time they say they were. These files still seem to go into the incremental archive. What's happening here? Is there a way to tell tar to look at the 'modify' timestamp? Isn't this what it's supposed to be doing?

I cannot remove it: if I try to delete it from Explorer, it says: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name. [desktop01]=====[server01]=====[server02]---------[machine01] \--------[machine02] \-------[machine03] \------[machine04] I want to setup some ssh tunnels so that from my desktop I can ssh directly to machine01 through 04 without having to ssh to each box in between in turn... So desktop01 can only see server01, server02 can only accept connections from server01 and machines 01 to 04 only accept connections from server02. Can anyone help as im really stuck with this.   Over on the Asp.Net forums where I moderate, a user had a problem calling a Web Service from a web page asynchronously. I tried his code on my machine and was able to reproduce the problem. I was able to solve his problem, but only after taking the long scenic route through some of the more perplexing nuances of Web Services and Proxies. Here is the fascinating story of that journey. Start with a simple Web Service     public class Service1 : System.Web.Services.WebService    {        [WebMethod]        public string HelloWorld()        {            // sleep 10 seconds            System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(10 * 1000);            return "Hello World";        }    } The 10 second delay is added to make calling an asynchronous function more apparent. If you don't call the function asynchronously, it takes about 10 seconds for the page to be rendered back to the client. If the call is made from a Windows Forms application, the application freezes for about 10 seconds. Add the web service to a web site. Right-click the project and select "Add Web Reference…" Next, create a web page to call the Web Service. The asynchronous call was made and returned immediately. About 10 seconds later, the event handler fires and we get the result. Perfect….right? Not so fast cowboy. Watch the browser during the call: What the heck? The page is waiting for 10 seconds. Even though the asynchronous call returned immediately, Asp.Net is waiting for the event to fire before it renders the page. This is NOT what we wanted. I experimented with several techniques to work around this issue. Some may erroneously describe my behavior as 'hacking' but, since no ingesting of Twinkies was involved, I do not believe hacking is the appropriate term. If you examine the proxy that was automatically created, you will find a synchronous call to HelloWorld along with an additional set of methods to make asynchronous calls. I was worried the page object would be disposed after rendering the page but the system was smart enough to keep the page object in memory to handle the callback. Both techniques have a use: Delayed Render: Say you want to verify a credit card, look up shipping costs and confirm if an item is in stock. You could have three web service calls running in parallel and not render the page until all were finished. Nice. You can send information back to the client as part of the rendered page when all the services are finished. Immediate Render: Say you just want to start a service running and return to the client. You can do that too. However, the page gets sent to the client before the service has finished running so you will not be able to update parts of the page when the service finishes running. Summary: YourFunctionAsync() and an EventHandler will not render the page until the handler fires. BeginYourFunction() and a CallBack function will render the page as soon as possible. I found all this to be quite interesting and did a lot of searching and researching for documentation on this subject….but there isn't a lot out there. The biggest clues are the parameters that can be sent to the WSDL.exe program: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/7h3ystb6(VS.100).aspx Two parameters are oldAsync and newAsync. OldAsync will create the Begin/End functions; newAsync will create the Async/Event functions. Caveat: I haven't tried this but it was stated in this article. I'll leave confirming this as an exercise for the student J. Included Code: I'm including the complete test project I created to verify the findings. The project was created with VS 2008 SP1. There is a solution file with 3 projects, the 3 projects are: Web Service Asp.Net Application Windows Forms Application To decide which program runs, you right-click a project and select "Set as Startup Project". I created and played with the Windows Forms application to see if it would reveal any secrets. I found that in the Windows Forms application, the generated proxy did NOT include the Begin/Callback functions. Those functions are only generated for Asp.Net pages. • NTFS Corruption: Files created in Linux corrupted when Windows Boots

  I'm getting some file loss and corruption on my Win7/Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot setup. I have a large shared NTFS partition. I have my Windows Docs/Music/etc. directories on that file and have the comparable directors in Linux setup as a sym. link. I'm using ntfs-3g on the linux side of things to manage the ntfs partition. The shared partition is on a logical partition along with my Linux /home / and /swap partitions. The ntfs partition is mounted at boot time via fstab with the following options: ntfs-3g users,nls=utf8,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec,rw The problem seems to be confined to newly created and recently edited files. I have not see data loss or corruption when creating/editing files in Windows and then moving over to Ubuntu. I've been using the sync command aggressively in Ubuntu to try to ensure everything is getting written to the HDD. I do not use hibernate in Windows so I know it's not the usual missing files due to Hibernation problem. I'm not seeing any mount related issues on dmesg. Most recently I had a set of files related to a LaTeX document go bad. Some of them show up in Ubuntu but I am unable to delete them. In the GUI file browser they are given thumbnails associated with files I created on my last boot of Windows. To be more specific: I created a few png files in Windows. The files corrupted by that Windows boot are associated with running PdfLatex on a file and are not image files. However, two of the corrupted files show up with the thumbnail image of one of the previously mentioned png files. The png files are not in the same directory as the latex files but they are both win the Document Folder tree. I've had sucess with using NTFS for shared data in the past and am hoping there's some quirk here I'm missing and it's not just bad luck. On one hand this appears to be some kind of Windows problem as data loss occurs when I boot to Windows after having worked in Ubuntu for a while. However, I'm assuming it's more on the Ubuntu end as it requires the special NTFS drivers. Edit for more info: This is a Lenovo Thinkpad L430. Purchased new in the last month. So it's a fairly fresh install. Many of the files on the shared partition were copied over from a previous NTFS formatted shared partition on another HDD. As requested: here's a sample chkdsk log. Some of the files its mentioning were files that got deleted off the partition while in Ubuntu. Others were created/edited but not deleted. Checking file system on D: Volume dismounted. There is more than enough information on the web. One thing that I would like to see from Microsoft is a complete reference example of business application. Personally I like what Nikhil Kothari is doing (check out his Mix 10 session “Developing with WCF RIA Services Quickly and Effectively” and his blog http://www.nikhilk.net/).
