  I tried to install bumblebee on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS by following steps on ubuntuwiki site. • The Social Business Thought Leaders - Steve Denning

  How is the average organization doing? Not very well according to a number of recent books and reports. A few indicators provide quite a gloomy picture: Return on assets and invested capitals dropped to 25% of its value in 1965 in the entire US market (see The Shift Index by John Hagel) Firms are dying faster and faster with the average lifespan of companies listed in the S&P 500 index gone from 67 years in the 1920s to 15 years today (see Creative Disruption by Richard Foster) Employee engagement ratio, a high level indicator of an organization’s health proved to affect performance outcomes, does not exceed on average 20%-30% (see Employee Engagement, Gallup or The Engagement Gap, Towers Perrin) In one of the most enjoyable keynotes of the Social Business Forum 2012, Steve Denning (Author of Radical Management and Independent Management Consultant) explained why this is happening and especially what leaders should do to reverse the worrying trends. In this Social Business Thought Leaders series, we asked Steve to collapse some key suggestions in a 2 minutes video that we strongly recommend. Steve discusses traditional management - that set of principles and practices born in the early 20th century and largely inspired by thinkers such as Frederick Taylor and Henry Ford - as the main responsible for the declining performance of modern organizations. While so many things have changed in the last 100 or so years, most companies are in fact still primarily focused on maximizing profits and efficiency, cutting costs, coordinating individuals top-down through command and control. The issue is, in a knowledge intensive, customer centred, turbulent market like the one we are experiencing, similar concepts are not just alienating employees' passion but also destroying the last source of competitive differentiation left: creativity and the innovative potential. According to Steve Denning, in a phase change from old industrial to a creative, collaborative, knowledge economy, the answer is hidden in a whole new business ecosystem that puts the individual (both the employee and the customer) at the center of the organization. He calls this new paradigm Radical Management and in the video interview he articulates the huge challenges and amazing rewards our enterprises are facing during this inevitable transition.

  The final round of IBM’s Watson against Ken Jenning and Brad Rutter ended last night with Watson coming out in a strong lead against its two human opponents. Read on to catch a video of the match and see just how quick Watson is on the draw. Watson tore through many of the answers, the little probability bar at the bottom of the screen denoting it was often 95%+ confident in its answers. Some of the more interesting stumbles were, like in the last matches, based on nuance. By far the biggest “What?” moment of the night, however, was when it answered the Daily Double question of “The New Yorker’s 1959 review of this said in its brevity and clarity, it is ‘unlike most such manuals, a book as well as a tool’”. • Tell me what&rsquo;s wrong! &ndash; An XNA sample demonstrating exception handling and reporting in

  I’ve always enjoyed using Nick Gravelyn’s exception handling in all of my games. You’re always going to encounter those unhandled exception that your players are going to ferret out and having a method to display them rather than just crashing to the dashboard is definitely more of an elegant solution. But the other day I got to thinking…what if we could do more? What if instead of just displaying the error, we could encourage the players to send us the error. So I started playing with that an expanding upon Nick’s sample code to see what I could come up with. I got close to what I envisioned, but unfortunately there were some limitations to just what the XNA API could do. In my head I was picturing the players hitting “Send Message” and a 360 message would just be sent to the XBLIG developer. Unfortunately, you can only send messages in an XNA game to someone you’re currently in a network session with. Since I didn’t want to have a 360 server running all the time, virally connecting to players just to get error messages, I did the next best thing and just open up a 360 message and encourage them to manually enter the gamertag. Maybe someday we’ll be able to do that a little better, but this works for now. In the sample, players can hit the “A” button or key to generate in an exception. If the debugger is not attached, then the Exception message screen will be shown explaining what has happened and giving the player a chance to send a 360 message to the gamertag provided or maybe even just send an email. Nick’s code has been changed just a bit. It now accepts any PlayerIndex (no longer hard coded to just PlayerIndex.One) and it no longer uses a MessageBox to get the users selection. The code has also been modified so that it works both for the 360 and for the PC. Check out “Tell me what’s wrong!” and let me know if you have any thoughts or suggestions. We have a system that gathers reviews from people that have used our services and that publishes these customer reviews making them available for all website visitors. When these customer reviews are published we have placed them within the appropriate tags according to the guidelines set by Google, which you can find here.   I've been programming for years now, working my way through various iterations of Blub (BASIC, Assembler, C, C++, Visual Basic, Java, Ruby in no particular order of "Blub-ness") and I'd like to learn Lisp. However, I have a lot of intertia what with limited time (family, full time job etc) and a comfortable happiness with my current Blub (Java). So my question is this, given that I'm someone who would really like to learn Lisp, what would be the initial steps to get a good result that demonstrates the superiority of Lisp in web development? Maybe I'm missing the point, but that's how I would initially see the application of my Lisp knowledge. I'm thinking "use dialect A, use IDE B, follow instructions on page C, question your sanity after monads using counsellor D". I'd just like to know what people here consider to be an optimal set of values for A, B, C and perhaps D. Also some discussion on the relative merit of learning such a powerful language as opposed to, say, becoming a Rails expert. Just to add some more detail, I'll be developing on MacOS (or a Linux VM) - no Windows based approaches will be necessary, thanks. Notes for those just browsing by I'm going to keep this question open for a while so that I can offer feedback on the suggestions after I've been able to explore them. • Reclaim Vertical UI Space by Moving Your Tabs to the Side in Firefox

  Are you looking for a way to move your tabs to the side in Firefox and gain access to more vertical UI space? The Vertical Tabs extension for Firefox lets you accomplish both in a matter of moments. As soon as you install the extension and restart Firefox the Tab Bar will be automatically converted into a shiny new Vertical Tabs Sidebar. All that you have to do is start enjoying the extra vertical UI space. Some things to keep in mind when using the extension are: You can easily adjust the width of the sidebar to suit your needs using the mouse (very nice!)   I currently work at the University of Kansas (KU) and before that Stanford University, to be particular the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC).  Collaborating with various Higher Ed institutions the past several years has shown a marked increase in the Microsoft side of the house.  To give you an idea of our current environment, here are some of the things we (Enterprise Systems) have been working on the past two years I’ve been at KU: Migrated from Novell to Active Directory (AD), although we’re still leveraging Novell for IDM.  We currently have 550,000+ objects in AD, and we still have several departments to bring in. Upgraded from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 and Forefront Online Protection for Exchange (FOPE) Implemented SCCM 2007 for Windows systems management Implemented central file storage using EMC products for the backend, using CIFS as the frontend Restructuring AD domains and Forests to decrease the administrative overhead and provide a primary authentication mechanism for the entire University Determining Key Performance Indicators for AD and Exchange Implemented SCOM 2007 to monitor AD and Exchange Implemented Confluence for collaboration within IT and other technology providers at the University Implemented Data Protection Manager (DPM) for backup of AD and Exchange Built a test and QA environment to better facilitate upcoming changes to the environment Almost ready to raise the AD domain level to 2008 R2   I’m sure I’m missing things, and my next post will be some of the things we’re getting ready for – like Centrify to provide AD for OS X and Linux systems.  If anyone would like more info on a particular area, please drop me a line.  I’d be happy to discuss.
