• Using XML in a Flex Website to Improve SEO

  Hi, I've got a Flex 3 site called www.brainpinata.com that's a trivia game. Basically, everything in the site is pulled from a database-- the questions, choices, and answers. So, unfortunately, Google doesn't index my content. So, I'm trying to think of ways to improve the situation: A) If I took my database data and put it in an XML file which was in the website's root directory, would this work? Would it violate any Google policy? (The info would be the same as in the db-- so nothing shady.) Would I have to "wire" the XML into my site or would it be enough to just have the XML sitting in the root directory? B) Another idea is to use the noscript tag and load the XML content there. As I understand it Google indexes content that people who have Javascript turned off would see. I know Flex/Actionscript 3, and unfortunately, I don't know how to load XML content with HTML. Does anyone know of an example where a Flex site uses XML for the noscript content? Thank you. -Laxmidi

• Guide to the web development ecosystem

  I'm a long-time software developer, and I've been thrown in the deep, deep end of developing from the ground up what will hopefully be a highly scalable and interactive web application. I've been out of the web game for about 8 years, and even when I was last in it, I wasn't exactly on the cutting edge. I think I've made judicious design decisions and I'm quite happy with the progress I've been making so far, but new, hot web technologies keep crawling out of the woodwork and into my headspace, forcing me to continually revalidate my implementation decisions. Complicating things even further is the preponderance of out-of-date information and the difficulty of knowing what is out of date in the first place. What I'm wondering is, are there any comprehensive books or guides dedicated to compiling and comparing the technologies out there, end-to-end in the web application stack? I'm happy to learn new techs on demand, but I don't like learning about them after I've already spent time going in another direction. I'm looking for the sort of executive info a CTO might read to make sure the best architectural decisions are being made. And just to be clear, this is a question about resources, not about specific technology suggestions.

• Games Localization: Cultural Points

  Great article about localization considerations, this times in the games space. Well worth checking out. It's rare to see such all-encompassing articles about localization considerations aimed at designers. That's a shame. The industry assumes all these things are known. The evidence from practice is that they're not and also need constant reinforcement. We're not in the games space in enterprise applications yet. However, there may be a role for them in the training space but also in CRM, building relationships and contacts. Beyond the obvious considerations, check out the cultural aspects of games localization too. For example, Zygna's offerings, which you might have played on Facebook: Zynga, which can lay claim to the two most popular social games on Facebook - FarmVille and CityVille - has recently localized both games for international audiences, and while CityVille has seen only localization for European languages, FarmVille has been localized for China, which involved rebuilding the game from the ground up. This localization process involved taking into account cultural considerations including changing the color palette to be brighter and increasing the size of the farm plots, to appeal to Chinese aesthetics and cultural experience. All the more reason to conduct research in your target markets, worldwide.

• So, whats the best book on C#?

  I see this question several times a day from newbie’s to professionals. I have listed the best C# books that I have read so far.   ECMA-334 C# Language Specification. – FREE book. This is probably the best place to start. Read it backwards and forwards and you can even request a hard copy. Absolute Beginners Guide to C Sharp 2nd Edition – Used this early on and found it very useful even if its game programming. C-Sharp 2.0 - The Complete Reference, 2nd Edition (McGraw-Hill, 2006) – One of the most useful books that is always with me. It contains short example code and is very well written. Dot Net Zero - Charles Petzold  - FREE book and you should definately give it a read. C Sharp in Depth by Jon Skeet -  Probably one of the most in depth books on C Sharp and definitely not for beginners. Jon Skeet knows C# like no other. I would consider this book the Bible of C#. If you understand 50% of this book, you have a good understanding of the language.  CLR via C Sharp 3rd Edition – I just started reading this book and it is another book thats not for beginners. If you really want to understand the CLR then give this book a try. Well, thats it. I hope you enjoy the books as I have spent a lot of time researching different C# books.

  If you rock a bunch of tabs and sometimes need a little visual reminder to recall where you left a tab you’re looking for, Tabs Visual Manager thumbnails all your tabs for easy visual switching. Install Tabs Visual Manager, restart Chrome, and anytime you need to find a tab you can click on the Tabs Visual Manager icon in the toolbar. By default it opens a new tab with all your tab thumbnails, we found it was more convenient to switch it to pop-up mode (wherein it pops up a smaller menu from the icon itself instead of a whole new tab). • Exploring MDS Explorer by Mark Nelson

  Recently, I posted about my colleague Olivier’s MDS Explorer tool, which is a great way to get a look inside your MDS repository. I have been playing around with it a little bit, nothing much really, just some cosmetic stuff, but you might like to take a look at it. I made it format the documents nicely with proper indentation, and with line numbers and a nicer editor. It also will warn you if you are about to open a large document so that you know it has not crashed, but that you just have to be patient. And I added some icons and stuff. • Add a Real-Time Earth Wallpaper App to Ubuntu with xplanetFX

  Are you tired of the same old wallpaper on your Ubuntu desktop? Now you can go from blah to literally spacious, real-time styled views of Earth with the xplanetFX Wallpaper App for Linux. You can conveniently access the “file type” downloads, screenshots, and jump-to links all on the front page. For our example we downloaded the .deb setup file on our system. The setup file will need to download three additional files to complete the setup process. After those are downloaded all dependencies will have been met and you can complete the installation process. Once that is done you can find xplanetFX by going to the Accessories Section of your Ubuntu Menu. This is what the main control window looks like when you start xplanetFX for the first time. You should take a few moments to look through the various tabs and tweak the settings for items like location, screen resolution, timing, auto-start, etc. When you are done click on Execute and within a few moments your desktop will have a fresh new look! • Can't complete dropbox installation from behind proxy

  Problem: My PC on campus sits behind a proxy (requiring authentication) and I can't setup Dropbox. I am convinced that this is a proxy issue as I can't setup Ubuntu one either (but I don't use Ubuntu One so that is not a problem). I have looked at the Ubuntu One fix but it seems to be to modify settings explicitly related to Ubuntu One. I can install the nautilus-dropbox package (compiled from source and from .deb package from website and from software centre) but once I click OK from the "Dropbox Installation" dialog box (prompting me to download the proprietary daemon) the installation just freezes with the OK button pressed. When I look at its process in System Monitor its waiting channel is inet_wait_for_connect. I have set the following proxy directives thus far: Added mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80 information to network proxy settings under network in settings. Added http_host and http_port variables under gconf-editor-system-proxy Added 'host', 'authentication_password' 'authentication_user' and ticked 'user authentication' and 'use_http_proxy' under gconf-editor-system-http_proxy Added export http_proxy="http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/" to /etc/bash.bashrc Added Acquire::http::proxy "http://mj22:**@proxy.waikato.ac.nz:80/"; to /etc/apt/apt.conf (which is what I imagine is letting Software Center retrieve packages). (where ** is my password) I have also added the equivalent ftp and https lines for the above entries. I get the internet fine and Software Centre can download packages but thats it. Related issues: The software centre can't fetch reviews (but can download packages). When trying to add an online account in Gnome 3 a dialog pop up appears with "Error getting a Request Token: Cannot connect to proxy (proxy.waikato.ac.nz)" Updates: After some time (10mins ish) Dropbox shows an error dialog box that reads: Trouble connecting to Dropbox servers. Maybe your internet connection is down, or you need to set you http_proxy environment variable. Is there a way I can see what environment variables are currently set?

• pdflatex reads .eps files saved in OS/X, but not in Ubuntu

  Sorry if this is a stupid question; I'm a newbie. I am preparing a manuscript in LaTeX. The journal (Physical Biology, an IOP publication) requires that figures be saved in .eps format, so I am trying to do that. However, I cannot get my LaTeX file to build when I have generated the .eps files on my Ubuntu computer. If I save the images on my Mac, the file build just fine. So far, I have tried saving images in ImageJ, FIJI and Inkscape. The same problem occurs in all three. When using kile, I get the following error: /usr/share/texmf-texlive/tex/latex/oberdiek/epstopdf-base.sty:0: Shell escape feature is not enabled. In TexWorks, the error is different, but still there: Package pdftex.def Error: File `./figures4/figure4a-eps-converted-to.pdf' not found. Now, if I fire up Inkscape, FIJI or ImageJ on OS/X, everything works fine. The Mac also can't build with the Ubuntu-saved images. The images generated on the Ubuntu machine open fine using Document Viewer. I am building the same LaTeX file on both computers, with the exact same results. The header of my LaTeX file is: \documentclass[12pt]{iopart} \usepackage{graphicx} \usepackage{epstopdf} \usepackage{parskip} \usepackage{color} \usepackage{iopams} And then the code for the figure is: \begin{figure} \center{\includegraphics[width=4in] {./figures4/figure4a.eps}} \footnotesize{\caption{ \label{fig:4a} (4a) lorem ipsum dolor sic amet.}} \end{figure} I'd be happy to send an example of both .eps files. • Get Smarter Just By Listening

  Occasionally my friends ask me what do I listen/read to keep informed. So I thought I would like to post an update. First - there is an entirely new network being launched by Jason Calacanis called "ThisWeekIn". They have weekly shows on variety of topics including Startups, Android, Twitter, Cloud Computing, Venture Capital and now the iPad. If you want to keep ahead (and really get motivated) - I totally recommend listening to at least This Week in Startups. I also find Cloud Computing helpful. I also like listening to the Android show so that I can see how it's progressing. Because while I love my iPhone/iPad - it's  important to keep the competition in the game up to improve everything. I'm also not opposed to switching to Android if something becomes as nice experience - but so far - my take on Android devices are  - 10 years ago, I would have jumped all over them because of their hackability. But now, I'm in a phase, where I just want these devices to work and most of my creation is in non-programming areas - I find the i* experience better. Second - In terms of general entertaining tech news - I'm a big fan of This Week in Tech. Finally - For a non-geek but very informative show - The Kevin Pollack Show on ThisWeekIn network gets my highest rating.
