• IASA ITARC &ndash; Denver May 6th

  The Denver chapter of the International Association of Software Architects (IASA) is holding an IT Architect Regional Conference (ITARC) in Denver on May 6th. The speaker list for this conference is amazing. Paul Rayner, Dave McComb, Randy Kahle, Peter Provost, Randy Stafford, George Fairbanks – all great speakers, and from Colorado. Brandon Satrom (who also happens to be the president of the IASA Austin chapter) will also be speaking, as will some other heavy hitters (for example, Ted Farrell, Chief Architect and Senior VP of Oracle). This is an amazing line-up, and the conference is quite reasonably priced ($150 for IASA members until April 10th, including a catered lunch). I also have the privilege of being a presenter at this conference. If you’ve ever heard any of the previously named speakers, you know that they set the bar quite high. Sounds like I’m going to have to step up my game. What I get to talk about is really cool stuff. The company I work for – Colorado CustomWare – brought me on board nearly two years ago. To say there was some technical debt is somewhat… understated. Equally understated would be that management is committed to doing the right thing. Over the past two years, we’ve done significant architectural refactoring – including an effort that took the entire team offline for most of a month. We’ve reduced the application size by 50% without losing functionality. As you can imagine, this has reduced the complexity of the application, making development faster and less prone to bugs. We’ve made many other changes – moving to an agile process, training developers, moving towards a more OO architecture. The changes we’ve made reveal, in some ways, just how far afield we were.. and there are still more changes to be made. Amazingly enough, our leadership team is eager for me to share these experiences with other architects. I’m really looking forward to being able to do so.

• Sun2Oracle: Upgrading from DSEE to the next generation Oracle Unified Directory - webcast follow up

  Thanks to all of the guest speakers on our Sun2Oracle webcast: Steve from Hub City Media, Albert from UCLA and our own Scott Bonell. During the webcast, we tried to answer as many questions as we could, but there were a few that we needed a bit more time to answer.  Albert from UCLA sent me the following information: Alternate Directory EvaluationWe were happy with Sun DSEE. OUD, based on the research we had done, was a logical continuation of DSEE.  If we moved away, it was to to go open source. UCLA evaluated OpenLDAP, OpenDS, Red Hat's 389 Directory. We also briefly entertained Active Directory. Ultimately, we decided to stay with OUD for the Enterprise Directory, and adopt OpenLDAP for the non-critical edge directories.HardwareFor Enterprise Directory, UCLA runs 3 Dell PowerEdge R710 servers. Each server has 12GB RAM and 2 2.4GHz Intel Xeon E5 645 processors. We run 2 of those servers at UCLA's Data Center in a semi active-passive configuration. The 3rd server is located at UCLA Berkeley. All three are multi master replicated. At run time, the bulk of LDAP query requests go to 1 server. Essentially, all of our authn/authz traffic is being handled by 1 server, with the other 2 acting as redundant back ups.

  Desktop notifications from Chromium-based browsers are an awesome feature, but they do not blend in well at all with the native system theming in Ubuntu. Now you can fix that small problem using the wonderful Chromify-OSD extension created by Marco Ceppi. Once you get the extension installed you can give it a quick test run using the link and information we have listed below. As you can see in the image above the new notification style looks absolutely wonderful. Chromify-OSD (Chrome Web Store) [via OMG! • How to check system performance?

  Hi all, I am a new Ubuntu user and really like the look and the features of the OS. However, I have a feeling that the performance could be better. With that I mean: Somehow the scrolling within firefox of sites seems laggy. I do not know how I should measure it but there is a difference. Not that it is unusable but it is aggravating. Java programs are running really slow. As a comparison (I know it is not a fair one), I tried to run a game using wine. The graphic specifications using windows were much higher (1600x1200) with a high level of detail, and in ubuntu with the lowest level of detail 1024x768 was the maximum. (My graphics card is a GeForce GTS 450 with 1gb RAM) Coming to my question: Is there a way to measure the performance of 3D acceleration, java applets, firefox scrolling etc. with a tool and compare it with lets say a windows OS or other users having almost the same hardware? Maybe it is a setup issue where some fundamental drivers are missing or something!? Any help, link, suggestion is appreciated! Cherio Woltan

  many developer thing to adopt IIS express aka Webmatrix to use inside visual studio. that the feature of Visual studio service pack 1. the visual studio 2010 sp1 allow developer to use webmatrix inside the visual studio. the developer can choose one of Visual studio development server or Webmatrix. the visual studio service pack 1 launch today but i am not recommended them because it’s in beta. if you use them then you may be in a big trouble because beta’s fundamental we all know. don’t be fool by installing them because they not tell you about both thing pros and cons. the stable version of visual studio is Visual studio who can be obtained from Microsoft download center not service pack 1. so beware to use unstable version. this is not browser then we have 3 option 1. chrome 2. firefox  3. Microsoft internet explorer [fool] because this is IDE and we have only one that can be problem if they work not well. the service pack 1 always changes your installation for visual studio Express edition [tool such as VWD or VCS express] if you already have them  i means service pack 1 then share your experience with us! if not that don’t look on Microsoft website blogs because they never tell you pros and cons of their software.

• Transmission dependencies are not in repository

  I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 using Gnome3 through their ppa in launchpad. Went good until now. Today Ubuntu wanted to make some updates and I thought okay. But it didn't want to install all of them. Turned out there were not all dependencies in the ppa. Before I noticed that, I (noob :D) uninstalled (apt-get purge) Transmission in order to reinstall it. Bad Idea, because now I can't install it, even using synaptics. The problem: It seems like the only ppas that have transmission in it are the one from gnome3 team (not all packages included according to synaptics, v2.71) and the official (transmission-common missing, v2.61). So when I try to install a package it says that transmission-common is too new. I can't even find the version that should be somewhere in the official standard Ubuntu ppa. Installing from the Software center doesn't work either. Why aren't all dependencies in the ppas or why can't I see them? How can I install Transmission (stable, newest version) again? And why has the gnome3 team a newer version as the stable ppa of transmission? Are they including beta software? If you need any additional information just tell me. Sorry I think it's quiet confusing what I did there. Thanks in advance. EDIT1 Okay sorry, I should have explained better. When I try to install it tells me something of dependency problems.   My disk space is dwindling by about 2GB a day! But I am still losing the war. Finally, I realised I have a big misunderstanding: julian@server1:~$ sudo du -h / | tail -n 1 16G / All of my files in / only add up to 16 GB. That leaves 110 GB unaccounted for! Clearly I have a misunderstanding: I thought the '/dev/sda4' line represented all the files visible from '/'. What should I be reading to understand where the other storage has gone? More details: I have an Ubuntu 11.10 server, that was set-up by data-center staff. It is running my own code (which is fairly prolific with log files, but otherwise doesn't store much stuff on the drive) duplicity for backups (which tends to store a lot of signature files) various other standard services, like Apache, nagios, etc. They are very lightly used. It has been up for about 4 months without a reboot. I lied about the du output (simplified it for effect). It also complained about not being able to access GVFS and the du processes's own resources.   Just a reminder that you still have the next several weeks to take the beta exam for the new "Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer" certification. From now through December 16th, you can take the "Java SE 7 Programmer I" exam (1Z1-803) for only $50 USD. Not only that, but because this only a single-exam certification - passing it puts you among the very first certified on the new Java SE 7 platform! You'll be happy to note that we worked hard to raise the bar for OCA as we built the Java SE 7 certification. The content that we considered to be more ‘conceptual knowledge-based' has been eliminated in the OCA level and has been replaced with far more practical content - what we often call "practitioner-level" concepts and questions. In fact, some of the topics that we previously covered at the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) level is now covered at the OCA level. Doing this not only increases the value of the Java SE 7 OCA certification, but also has provided the opportunity for us to broaden the topics, concepts, questions covered at the OCP certification level. All of this adds up to more value and credibility to those who get certified on Java SE 7. The OCA exam doesn’t have prerequisites. • Cheating Incident

  Hi Everyone -I just wanted to give you a heads-up on some recent actions that we had to take regarding someone who tried to cheat on a test.Just last week, we had a candidate who was bold enough to try to take screen-shots during the exam using his cell phone. Of course this is completely against Oracle Certification Program policy. This candidate's exam was immediately stopped, and the candidate was ejected from the testing center.Of course it doesn't end there. This candidate was also suspended permanently from the Oracle Certification Program, and all of his previous certifications were revoked. He is no longer eligible to participate in the program. Unfortunately - if this candidate works for an Oracle partner company, then his company will also likely become aware of his indiscretion - particularly when they request validation of his certification.Although this particular candidate was blatantly involved in content theft, any type of cheating incident is very unfortunate. It erodes the value of the certification credentials, and hurts everyone involved. • Installing Oracle Event Processing 11g by Antoney Reynolds

  Earlier this month I was involved in organizing the Monument Family History Day. It was certainly a complex event, with dozens of presenters, guides and 100s of visitors. So with that experience of a complex event under my belt I decided to refresh my acquaintance with Oracle Event Processing (CEP). CEP has a developer side based on Eclipse and a runtime environment. Server install The server install is very straightforward (documentation). It is recommended to use the JRockit JDK with CEP so the steps to set up a working CEP server environment are: Download required software JRockit - I used Oracle “JRockit 6 - R28.2.5” which includes “JRockit Mission Control 4.1” and “JRockit Real Time 4.1”. Oracle Event Processor - I used “Complex Event Processing Release 11gR1 (11.1.1.6.0)” Install JRockit Run the JRockit installer, the download is an executable binary that just needs to be marked as executable. Install CEP Unzip the downloaded file Run the CEP installer, the unzipped file is an executable binary that may need to be marked as executable. Choose a custom install and add the examples if needed. It is not recommended to add the examples to a production environment but they can be helpful in development. Developer Install The developer install requires several steps (documentation). A developer install needs access to the software for the server install, although JRockit isn’t necessary for development use. Read the full article by Antony Reynolds.
