  • Slow running Ubuntu 10.10 laptop

    Hello everyone. I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs: Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU 4GB RAM 500GB HDD 512MB Nvidia 8600GT video Realtek HD audio What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI. Thanks for the help.

  • When using emacs do you rebind caps-lock to CTRL?

    This question is, as indicated, for those who use Emacs. When you do, do you rebind the caps-lock key to CTRL, or do you use the "normal" ctrl key? I've recently learned some Emacs commands and was using the Visual Studio 2008 emacs commands for a while, and of course I used a caps-rebind tool, but I'm curious how many other people do. On a side note, the emacs bindings for VS are severely incomplete :(

    I'm playing with a simple string replacement editor for editing VB.Net functions outside of VB. Is there a way to apply VB.Net code formatting to a string? For example. The txtboxCodeEntry looks like this: If strVar="dummy" then 1 else 0 Endif I would like it to "autoformat" to: If strVar = "dummy" Then 1 Else 0 End If The formatting would match whatever formatting VB.Net does when you're editing code in the Visual Studio IDE.   • Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

    Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10) The weird part is that when I turn the wifi hardware stitch on and off on the side of the laptop, I get the following printed in /var/log messages: Dec 30 23:24:48 temp-laptop kernel: [ 213.432302] usb 4-2: USB disconnect, address 2 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.276310] usb 4-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3 Dec 30 23:24:52 temp-laptop kernel: [ 217.441759] usb 4-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Does Ubuntu think my wifi card is a USB device? I create the folders needed for the application in the 'application folder'(under 'File System on Target Machine'), then add files into the appropriate folders, and when i install the application and go to the installation folder there are no folders...there is only the application exe file, hm...

  • Problems with starting windows service on windows xp SP3

    I'm currently facing a problem which I can not resolve and I really don't know what to do anymore. When I'm trying to start the service I receive the message: "The service is started but again also stopped, this because that some of the services will stop if they have nothing to do, for example the performance logs and the alerts service". I've looked into the Windows Logs but nothing is written there which could describe why my service is all the time stopping. I've also tried to fire the windows service via the command prompt which gives me the message: "The service is not started, but the service didn't return any faults.". I've tried to remove all keys which references to my service, which didn't resolve the issue. I've searched on google (maybe not good enough) to find an answer but I didn't found any. I did found some websites which describes what I could do, but all of these suggestions didn't work. This is kinda ** because I do not know where to look. I do not have any error message, i do not have any id which i can use to search on. I really don't know where to start and I hope you guys can help me on this one. Detailed explanation about the windows service OS: Windows XP SP3 .Net Framework: .Net 4.0 Client Profile Language: C# Development environment: Visual Studio 2010 Professional (but Visual Studio 2012 RC is installed) Communications: WCF (Named Pipes), WCF (BasicHTTPBinding) Named Pipes: I have chosen for this solution because I wanted to communicate from a windows service to a windows form application. It worked now for quite some time but suddenly my windows service shuts it self down and I couldn't restart it anymore. There are two named pipes services implemented: An event service which will send any notification to the windows form application and an management service which gives my windows form application the possibility to maintain my windows service. BasicHTTPBinding: The basic http binding makes the connection to a central server. This connection is then used for streaming information from the client to the server. I do not know which additional information you will need, but if you guys need something then I'll try to give it as detailed as possible. Thank you in advance.

  • Can't find this.Controls - what am I missing?

    Sorry for a potentially dumb question, I am still new at this. I really appreciate your help. Referring to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1536739/c-get-control-by-name/1536756#1536756 But I don't have a "this.Controls" available. Is there something I am missing here? In other words, when I type "this." and visual studio populates a list of option, there is no "Controls" option.

    I create a query: Select * from HR_Tsalary where month='3' and year ='2010' the result is 473 records and I found 2 duplicate record, then I create another query to find duplicate record only: SELECT Emp_No, COUNT(*) FROM HR_Tsalary WHERE year = '10' AND month = '3'GROUP BY Emp_No HAVING COUNT(*) 1 the result is zero record from client side (thru Visual Basic Adodb code). But when I use same query from server the result is 2 records. Is there any different when create a query between from server side and client side?

  • Can I extend my total RAM by buying more, and what kind do I need to buy

    I currently have 4 GB total RAM and I would like to get some more, to bring it to a total of 8 GB. Is it possible to simply buy another 4 GB and bring it to 8? If so, what kind should I be buying? There is a lot of different possibilities, DDR3, DDR2, clock speed, etc. I am kind of lost among all this. My current setup goes like this: ACER EG43M mainboard Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 4 total RAM slots, 2 occupied by 2 GB sticks According to CPU-Z, my memory type is DDR3 (not sure how reliable that is) Full CPU-Z dump Windows 7 64-bit So basically, I want to know whether it's possible to extend my current RAM to get 8 GB total by buying another 4, and if so, what kind of RAM do I need? Note that I am not looking for shopping recommendations. I'm worried about the hardware compatibility.

I'm sure that my.ini need to be optimized, but unfortunately, I don't have any idea of my.ini configuration.   • Possible to use Bindings only for the SourceChanged event?

    Basically I want to use the WPF Binding framework to "observe" a property in the data context, and when that value changes to call an event handler. I do not actually want to bind it to any target. Sounds simple but from what I can see Binding is too coupled (to the visual tree and various other bits) to be able to use it flexibly. Any thoughts?

  • Which OS should I boot into for virtualization?

    This might be a silly question. I use windows 7 99% of the time. I run linux 10% of the time and XP 5% of the time. I am thinking about getting a Intel® Core™ i7-2600 Processor which has hardware support for virtualization. I dont think i want more than one partition. May have a swap partition. Which OS should I make my primary (and only) partition? I suspect windows7 if i am always using it as going through a linux layer would slow it down. Does it matter much which OS i use if i have hardware support for virtualization? At the moment I am using VMWare player. I suspect software doesnt effect performance?

  • Is ceph usable with only 100Mbps bandwidth between nodes?

    I haven't great hardware, but my requirements are low, I would like to start using ceph so as to abstract filesystem location and allow potential easy scaling to bigger hardware in an hypothetical future. My actual hardware meets ceph hardware requirements except the ethernet bandwidth part between the hosts. Mine is 100 Mbit/s which is much lower than the 1Gbps expected in ceph, even from the minimal requirement. Will I be able to use ceph in a very small smili-prod environnement (with limited number of clients) ? FYI: My hardware is 2 or maybe 3 hosts having each 4 core Intel, 24Go RAM, 2x2To disks but 100Mpbs between them.

I'd really like to be able to do a visual diff on them, but my problem is they're being stored without any formatting at all - everything is on one line, so that makes it a little hard to see what changed.     Hi, I want to run C# programs on my HTC Magic, I can find the mono app on the Android market but I have no clue on how to run C# using. The code is just for fun, I don't want official support and such. After coding Visual Basic on windows mobile, I really want to code C# on Android, whether directly using some sort of editor if exists, or compiling it on a PC then installing it on Android.   • Display issues on new OpenSUSE install

    I installed OpenSUSE 13.1 on my newly built PC, but the display is just horrible : the edges of the screen are missing. For example, I can't see all the top part, I can barely read the date and I see "ctivities" instead of "Activities". However, when I take a screenshot everything seems to be fine (the cursor doesn't appear though) the characters are sometimes too big and sometimes too small the cursor is huge and many other strange things. I took a few pictures I'm using an Intel integrated GPU (HD4400) and made all the possible updates with YaST. Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks

  • Origin of display connector numbers in XServer (e.g. HDMI1, HDMI2, DP1)

    a custom mainboard has a DVI and a DisplayPort connector on the board. Currently, everything that is connected at DVI will be named "HDMI2" in XServer. I can see that by calling the "xrandr" tool (in Ubuntu Trusty Tahr). A display connected to the DP connector will be named "DP1" or "HDMI1", if I use a DP-to-DVI adapter. We are now testing a slightly upgraded board version, which has a newer CPU (Intel J1800, Baytrail) among other things and the position of the DVI and DP connectors are switched. Also, everything at the DVI port is called "HDMI1" and something connected to the DP port gets "DP2" or "HDMI2". Q: What causes these numbers to be produced in this manner and where (probably in the kernel) is it happening? I suspect the cause to be hardware related. Specifically, at which CPU pins the connector pins are routed and attached to. Q: Would it be possible to influence this numbering scheme in order to retain the previous numbering behaviour?
