• Problem convert column values from VARCHAR(n) to DECIMAL

  I have a SQL Server 2000 database with a column of type VARCHAR(255). All the data is either NULL, or numeric data with up to two points of precision (e.g. '11.85'). I tried to run the following T-SQL query but received the error 'Error converting data type varchar to numeric' SELECT CAST([MyColumn] AS DECIMAL) FROM [MyTable]; I tried a more specific cast, which also failed. SELECT CAST([MyColumn] AS DECIMAL(6,2)) FROM [MyTable]; I also tried the following to see if any data is non-numeric, and the only values returned were NULL. SELECT ISNUMERIC([MyColumn]), [MyColumn] FROM [MyTable] WHERE ISNUMERIC([MyColumn]) = 0; I tried to convert to other data types, such as FLOAT and MONEY, but only MONEY was successful. So I tried the following: SELECT CAST(CAST([MyColumn] AS MONEY) AS DECIMAL) FROM [MyTable]; ...which worked just fine. Any ideas why the original query failed? Will there be a problem if I first convert to MONEY and then to DECIMAL? Thanks!

• LINQ-SQL Updating Multiple Rows in a single transaction

  Hi guys, I need help re-factoring this legacy LINQ-SQL code which is generating around 100 update statements. I'll keep playing around with the best solution, but would appreciate some ideas/past experience with this issue. Here's my code: List<Foo> foos; int userId = 123; using (DataClassesDataContext db = new FooDatabase()) { foos = (from f in db.FooBars where f.UserId = userId select f).ToList(); foreach (FooBar fooBar in foos) { fooBar.IsFoo = false; } db.SubmitChanges() } Essentially i want to update the IsFoo field to false for all records that have a particular UserId value. Whats happening is the .ToList() is firing off a query to get all the FooBars for a particular user, then for each Foo object, its executing an UPDATE statement updating the IsFoo property. Can the above code be re-factored to one single UPDATE statement? Ideally, the only SQL i want fired is the below: UPDATE FooBars SET IsFoo = FALSE WHERE UserId = 123 EDIT Ok so looks like it cant be done without using db.ExecuteCommand. Grr...! What i'll probably end up doing is creating another extension method for the DLINQ namespace. Still require some hardcoding (ie writing "WHERE" and "UPDATE"), but at least it hides most of the implementation details away from the actual LINQ query syntax.

  Hi Well this will be hard to explain but ill do my best The thing is i have 4 tables all with a specific column to relate to eachother. 1 table with users(agent_users) , 1 with working hours(agent_pers), 1 with sold items(agent_stat),1 with project(agent_pro) the user and the project table is irrelevant in the issue at hand but to give you a better understanding why certain tables is included in my query i decided to still mention them =) The thing is that I use 2 pages to insert data to the working hour and the sold items during that time tables, then i have a third page to summarize everything for current month, the query for that is as following: SELECT *, SUM(sv_p_kom),SUM(sv_p_gick),SUM(sv_p_lunch) FROM (( agent_users LEFT JOIN agent_pers ON agent_users.sv_aid = agent_pers.sv_p_uid) LEFT JOIN agent_stat ON agent_pers.sv_p_uid = agent_stat.sv_s_uid) LEFT JOIN agent_pro ON agent_pers.sv_p_pid=agent_pro.p_id WHERE MONTH(agent_pers.sv_p_datum) =7 GROUP BY sv_aname so the problem is now that i dont want sold items from previous months to get included in the data received, i know i could solve that by simple adding in the WHERE part MONTH(agent_stat.sv_s_datum) =7 but then if no items been sold that month no data at all will show up not the time or anything. Any aid on how i could solve this is greatly appreciated. if there's something that's not so clear dont hesitate to ask and ill try my best to answer. after all my english isn't the best out there :P regards breezer

• Requiring mulitple group membership in order to access folder

  How would I go about creating a file or folder that requires a user to be a member of two or more different groups in order to read/write to the folder? For example, say I run an auto repair shop, and I have a folder called "Repair History" and I only want people to access it if they are members of BOTH the "Mechanics" and "Cashiers" group? This would be an AND requirment instead of an OR requirement which seems to be the norm. I know we can create a separate group that is needed to access the folder, but this is more of an academic question, since it pertains to a different security structure that we are creating. I'm not sure if MS security handles it, but I'm wondering how it would be done either way.

  Please excuse the context of my question for I did not know how to exactly word it. To not complicate things further, here's my business requirement: "bring me back all the Employees where they belong in Department "X". So when I view this, it will display all of the Employees that belong to this Department. Here's my environment: Silverlight 3 with Entity Framework 1.0 and WCF Data Services 1.0. I am able to load and bind all kinds of lists (simple), no problem. I don't feel that my environment matters and that's why I feel it is a LINQ question more than the technologies. My question is for scenarios where I have 3 tables linked, i.e. entities (collections). For example, I have this in my EDM: Employee--EmployeeProject--Project.   I took over maintenance of a PHP app recently and I'm not super familiar with PHP but some of the things I've been seeing on the site are making me nervous that it could be vulnerable to a SQL injection attack. When I use that on the command line, I get an administrative user back, but when I try it in the application, I get an invalid username/password error, like I should. Could there be some sort of global PHP configuration they have enabled to block these attacks? Where would that be configured? When I trying to open pages, which associated with microsoft.com (like ms live and others), my browser crashes. IE 8 crashes too. But Opera (I've installed it later) works fine with that pages. P.S. I tried to search the trojan software and viruses. But my PC is clean.

• Interesting LinqToSql behaviour

  We have a database table that stores the location of some wave files plus related meta data. There is a foreign key (employeeid) on the table that links to an employee table. However not all wav files relate to an employee, for these records employeeid is null. We are using LinqToSQl to access the database, the query to pull out all non employee related wav file records is as follows: var results = from Wavs in db.WaveFiles where Wavs.employeeid == null; Except this returns no records, despite the fact that there are records where employeeid is null. On profiling sql server i discovered the reason no records are returned is because LinqToSQl is turning it into SQL that looks very much like: SELECT Field1, Field2 //etc FROM WaveFiles WHERE 1=0 Obviously this returns no rows. However if I go into the DBML designer and remove the association and save. All of a sudden the exact same LINQ query turns into SELECT Field1, Field2 //etc FROM WaveFiles WHERE EmployeeID IS NULL I.e. if there is an association then LinqToSql assumes that all records have a value for the foreign key (even though it is nullable and the property appears as a nullable int on the WaveFile entity) and as such deliverately constructs a where clause that will return no records. Does anyone know if there is a way to keep the association in LinqToSQL but stop this behaviour. A workaround i can think of quickly is to have a calculated field called IsSystemFile and set it to 1 if employeeid is null and 0 otherwise. However this seems like a bit of a hack to work around strange behaviour of LinqToSQl and i would rather do something in the DBML file or define something on the foreign key constraint that will prevent this behaviour.

I am using "fragment 1400" and "mssfix" on all three machines. An mtu-test on both connections is successful. Outpost has gateway_enable="YES" in its rc.conf which correctly sets net.inet.ip.forwarding to 1 as mentioned earlier. As far as I know, that's all that's required to make a FreeBSD box forward packets between interfaces. Is there something else I could be forgetting ? FWIW, pinging 10.0.1.253 from Kino has the same result - the traffic does not get forwarded. UPDATE: I've found that I can only ping certain IP's on Guchuko's LAN from Outpost. From Outpost I can ping 192.168.0.3 and 192.168.0.2, but 192.168.99 and 192.168.0.4 are unreachable. The same tcpdump behavior can be seen. I think this means the problem can't be due to ipforwarding or routing, because Outpost can reach SOME hosts on Guchuko's LAN but not others and likewise, Guchuko can reach two hosts on Outpost's LAN, but not others. This baffles me.

• Copy recordset data into multiple sheets to avoid problem of maximum rows limit in Excel VBA

  I am developing reporting application in Excel/vba 2003. VBA code sends search query to database and gets the data through recordset. It will then be copied to one of excel sheet. The rertrieved data looks like as shown below. ProductID--|---DateProcessed--|----State----- 1................|.. 1/1/2010..............|.....Picked Up 1................|.. 1/1/2010..............|.....Forward To Approver 1................|.. 1/2/2010..............|.....Approver Picked Up 1................|.. 1/3/2010..............|.....Approval Completed 2................|.. 1/1/2010..............|.....Picked Up 3................|.. 1/2/2010..............|.....Picked Up 3................|.. 1/2/2010..............|.....Forward To Approver The problem is data retrieved from search query is so huge that it goes above the excel row limit (65536 rows in excel 2003). So I want to split this data into two excel sheets. While spliting the data I want to ensure that the data for same product shoud remain in one sheet. For example, if the last record in the above result set is 65537th record then I also want to move all records for product 3 into new sheet. So sheet1 will contain records for product id 1 and 2 with total records = 65534. Sheet 2 will cotain records for product id 3 - with total records = 2. How can I acheive this in vba? If it is not possible, is there any alternative solution ? Thanks in Advance !

• Serializable object in intent returning as String

  In my application, I am trying to pass a serializable object through an intent to another activity. The intent is not entirely created by me, it is created and passed through a search suggestion. In the content provider for the search suggestion, the object is created and placed in the SUGGEST_COLUMN_INTENT_EXTRA_DATA column of the MatrixCursor. However, when in the receiving activity I call getIntent().getSerializableExtra(SearchManager.EXTRA_DATA_KEY), the returned object is of type String and I cannot cast it into the original object class. I tried making a parcelable wrapper for my object that calls out.writeSerializable(...) and use that instead but the same thing happened. The string that is returned is like a generic Object toString(), i.e. com.foo.yak.MyAwesomeClass@4350058, so I'm assuming that toString() is being called somewhere where I have no control. Hopefully I'm just missing something simple. Thanks for the help! • Windows 7 default VPN - Single Click to Connect

  The default way to connect to a VPN (standard includedd MS client) seems to be to click on the network icon in the system tray to expand it, then pick the VPN connection, and click the connect button. This brings up a dialog where you can enter your username and password. I have told the VPN connection to remember my credentials. Is there some way I can skip that dialog and just have it connect? I have tried using rasdial.exe, and I can connect as long as I pass the username and password as arguments. It doesn't seem to want to use the stored credentials for some reason, maybe I need to store them with an elevated account.

  Hello everyone - I have this treeview control where I want to put uploaded files on the server. I want to be able to create the nodes and the child nodes dynamically from the database. I am using this query for getting the data from DB: SELECT c.Category, d.DocumentName FROM Categories c INNER JOIN DocumentUserFile d ON c.ID = d.CategoryId WHERE d.UserId = '9rge333a-91b5-4521-b3e6-dfb49b45237c' The result from that query is this one: Agendas transactions.pdf Minutes accounts.pdf I want to have the treeview sorted that way too. I am trying with this piece of code: TreeNode tn = new TreeNode(); TreeNode tnSub = new TreeNode(); foreach (DataRow dt in tblTreeView.Rows) { tn.Text = dt[0].ToString(); tn.Value = dt[0].ToString(); tnSub.Text = dt[1].ToString(); tnSub.NavigateUrl = "../downloading.aspx?file=" + dt[1].ToString() +"&user=" + userID; tn.ChildNodes.Add(tnSub); tvDocuments.Nodes.Add(tn); } I am getting the treeview populated nicely for the 1st category and the document under that category, but I can't get it to work when I want to show more documents under that category, or even more complicate to show new category beneath the 1st one with documents from that category. • Multiple Reporting Services databases in one instance?

  Is it possible to have multiple Reporting Services databases in one MSSQL instance? I have a MSSQL 2008 R2 with RS set to SharePoint Integrated Mode. This RS is in use and can't be changed. I do however need a RS in native mode for the TFS installation to be able to use it. Am I required to set up a new instance of MSSQL? Bonus question: If so, is that permitted under the MS licensing scheme or is it an additional cost?

• Mail server for Windows 2008

  I'm going to get a Windows 2008 dedicated server sometime soon. I'm going to have my website hosted on it, so, I also want to run a mail server on the same machine to receive any mail sent to the website (I use the SMTP Server in IIS for sending mail, but this about receiving not sending) Does Windows 2008 have a built-in POP3 OR IMAP server? If so, can it be accessed through a webmail interface? I mean does it also have a webmail interface similar to OWA for example? If not, do you have suggestions for a good mail server with a webmail interface, preferably free or open source? MS Exchange is above my budget and my needs are so simple anyway. I heard good things about hMailServer but I checked and it doesn't have a webmail interface. I know I can outsource this to a third party for a little monthly fee, but I prefer to host my own server. Thanks for any suggestions

• MSSQL: Choice of service accounts

  When installing MS SQL Server 2008, one needs to associate a service account with the installation (possibly even several accounts, one for the SQL Server Agent, one for Analysis Services, ..., but let's leave that for the case of simplicity). The service account may be local account, or a Windows domain account. If a domain account is used: Can MSSQL start, if connectivity to the domain controllers is temporarily down? If the answer is yes: Should each DBMS instance on each server have a separate account, or does it make sense to use a particular "MSSQL" domain account on all MSSQL-installations in the organization? If separate accounts are used for each instance on each server: Does it make sense to create a special MSSQL security group in the domain and place all the MSSQL service accounts in that group, perhaps to ease replication, etc? Is there a common, generally accepted naming convention for MSSQL service account(s)?

• Domain Controller Placement

  I've been working through some Exchange training documentation (the official MS e-learning package) and all of the design scenarios allude to placing at least one DC from your forest root domain in every site. I'm not sure whether this just relates to Exchange, but I can think of a number of issues we experience in our forest that would be resolved by this. For example, a Microsoft support engineer has stated that EVERY client in a child domain (i.e. all workstations and member servers) need access to a forest root DC to check certificate/template permissions, even on a subordinate CA. I have attempted to locate documentation or guidelines from Microsoft on this, but have not been able to find anything. I found the Domain Controller Placement guide, but it's only a form - you would use it to document where you will place your DCs, but it doesn't give any guidance on where you should deploy them. Does anyone know where, or if, I can find any such documentation?

• Creating a Linq->HQL provider

  Hi all, I have a client application that connects to a server. The server uses hibernate for persistence and querying so it has a set of annotated hibernate objects for persistence. The client sends HQL queries to the server and gets responses back. The client has an auto-generated set of objects that match the server hibernate objects for query results and basic persistence. I would like to support using Linq to query as well as Hql as it makes the queries typesafe and quicker to build (no more typos in HQL string queries). I've looked around at the following but I can't see how to get them to fit with what I have. NHibernate's Linq provider - requires using NHibernate ISession and ISessionFactory, which I don't have LinqExtender - requires a lot of annotations on the objects and extending a base type, too invasive What I really want is something that will generate give me a nice easy to process structure to build the HQL queries from. I've read most of a 15 page article written by one of the C# developers on how to create custom providers and it's pretty fraught, mainly because of the complexity of the expression tree. Can anyone suggest an approach for implementing Linq - HQL translation? Perhaps a library that will the cleanup of the expression tree into something more SQL/HQLish. I would like to support select/from/where/group by/order by/joins. Not too worried about subqueries.

• teamviewer display is slow to refresh

  I'm using teamviewer from time to time to connect my portable computer with my desktop computer when I need to check on something (personal use). One of the main things I've been noticing is that it is quite slow transfering the screen updates that keep happening. This happens more frequently when I'm moving full windows or when I open a window or when watching a small movie clip. I've tested the lowest maximum p2p speed I ever got in the last week between both and it is the desktop's upload speed of 6MB/s with the ping of 40ms (usually ~15 ms). With this I was expecting to have very sharp image and fast transfer speeds which is not what is happening. Just to clarify, both computer's individual core's CPU is not reaching its peak (25%) while teamviewer is active, so the encryption and decryption is not the cause. Why my connection between both computers so slow?

  Hey everyone, I'm trying to harden some of my PHP code and use mysqli prepared statements to better validate user input and prevent injection attacks. I switched away from mysqli_real_escape_string as it does not escape % and _. However, when I create my query as a mysqli prepared statement, the same flaw is still present. The query pulls a users salt value based on their username. I'd do something similar for passwords and other lookups.
