• I must clear my cmos to be able to boot

  I have this Asus p7p55d-e pro for about 8 months(got it last July) and for this last 3-4 days I cannot boot without clearing my CMOS what I have is: Seasonic M12D 750W ASUS P7P55D-E Pro Intel Core i5 760 Quad Core Processor Lynnfield LGA1156 XFX GeForce® 8800 GT Alpha Dog 512MB DDR3 Standard (PV-T88P-YDF4) 2x Corsair XMS3 CMX4GX3M2A1600C7 4GB DDR3 2X2GB DDR3-1600 CL 7-8-7-20 I tried to remove all the unnecessary stuff: HD/dvd/pci card/usb cable/etc I tried with only 1 dimm filled, instead of my 4, each one individually it didn't work I tried changing the battery, here goes a few dollars to nowhere, didn't work if I don't reset the CMOS it sometime stock on RAM led, sometime on BOOT DEVICE led, when this happen, it stuck on CPU speed detection when I boot right after the reset, i MUST click on the F2 option (boot with default bios setting) if i go into the bios and save/restart, i have to reset it again when booted, everything is rock solid stable, tried memtest, cpu stress, etc, etc. without issue what should be my next step? trying a new psu? (i need to find one..) doing rma? (i need this mb since it's my only computer...) something else?

• Get details / solve issue with a kernel panic?

  I have a Lenovo T430 running Linux Mint 13 (MATE): joseph:~$ uname -a Linux joseph-T430-LM 3.2.0-23-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Tue Apr 10 20:39:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux I installed Mint immediately after getting the laptop about two weeks ago, and have noticed that about once a day, the computer will completely freeze up- I can't use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart X, I can't use Ctrl+Alt+F1 to get a text only terminal, can't move mouse, can't type, and if any music was playing it just gets stuck in about a 1-second loop. There is a Windows partition, but I haven't had any issues in Windows. I couldn't find a common thread between the freezes, they were seemingly random (sometimes right after I clicked the mouse, sometimes not; sometimes with Pandora/flash being used, sometimes not, etc). I assume they're kernel panics since it completely locks up, but the laptop doesn't have a capslock or scroll lock LED. It is on a dock and I do have a USB keyboard, but the scroll lock/capslock lights do not flash when it happens (not sure if this is indicating its not a kernel panic, or if the kernel panic just wouldn't illuminate the LEDs on a usb keyboard attached to a laptop dock). This was annoying but not terrible. However, I've found a way to reproduce it. I have a particular CSV file that when I open up in LibreOffice Calc and scroll around, the same thing happens- complete lock up. I really need to use this file, so I'd like to fix the issue, but at the least it's given me a test case to work with. So, having a case where I can cause this issue, what can I do to better find out what's going on? I've looked in /var/log/syslog but haven't found anything seemingly useful. Any thoughts?

  After an Active Directory fail RDP connection started to ask for credentials twice (once on local RDP program, second time on remote's logon screen) I already looked at Windows 2008 R2 RDS - Double Login Solution provided there doesn't work for me. The server is alone, without AD/DNS services, RDP service isn't installed I tried every security settings on RDP-Tcp (RDP, Negotiate, SLL) Logon option is set to "Use credentials from the client" Both windows client and server use RDP 7.1 fPromptForPassword regitries are set to 0 Local Computer Policy\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Security\Always prompt for password upon connection is set to "Disabled" Why i am sure the problem comes from the server and not the client ? This problem affected a 3rd RDP program on Android too (it was directly showing "preparing desktop previously, on both MS RDP and the 3rd program) No bakcup are available (Else the Active Directory wouldn't be a fail, but just a lose of time) I am wondering if a rule linked to RDP got changed after the AD install+unistall, but i'm unable to find where. While this is not a critic problem, this is very annoying. I don't know if more information are needed, if it's the case and if you are patient enough, please tell me what is missing and i'll edit this post to add the missing informations.

• IDE/PATA high-speed hard drive dock

  I frequently need to access bare drives for backups and need a quick, high-speed way to deal with them. There are a multitude of SATA hard drive docks (for example), but I have a lot of IDE/PATA (hereafter "IDE") drives that I would like to be able to use similarly. There are IDE-to-SATA adapters so you can plug your IDE hard drive into a SATA port, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the same technology to have a native dock, yet none seems to exist. Now, I'm aware that 3.5" IDE drives do not have a specification for the layout of the connector, and therefore can't be slapped into a dock the same way a SATA drive could, but 2.5" PATA drives do. In fact, I'm not terribly interested in supporting 3.5" drives. It would be nice, but I deal with them far less frequently than 2.5" drives. Also, I'd very much like for the connection to the computer be faster than USB, preferably eSATA, I don't want to be spending time mounting a drive inside an enclosure, I don't want bare drives lying around with a cable hanging off of them, and I'd prefer a single dock rather than two. What seems like the ideal solution to me would be a regular SATA→eSATA dock and some sort of screwless adapter for IDE drives, but I'm open to any suggestions, regardless of my stated preferences, but which are, in some sort of order of preference: high-speed (faster than USB, at least) holder for drive (not just a cable) no complicated enclosure support for 3.5" IDE drives single dock Updates: Here's a 3.5" IDE to 3.5" SATA docking adapter that could be part of the solution. Weird. I figured that would be the impossible part. I was hoping to find something like this 2.5" to 3.5" SATA chassis that would take a 44-pin IDE drive internally. It looks like the Vantec EZ Swap EX comes awfully close. It has its own bay dock, but it looks like the SATA ports on the back are spaced properly, even if they're not aligned quite properly. Unfortunately, the proper position is at the very edge of the drive, which means that the docks' connectors are at the very edge of their recesses, which means there's no way to fit it in there.

• Viewing a large-resolution VNC server through a small-resolution viewer in Ubuntu

  I have two Ubuntu computers, one with a large screen resolution (1920x1600) that is running the default Ubuntu VNC server. I have another computer that has a resolution of about 1200x1024 that I use to VNC into the server using the default Ubuntu VNC viewer). Now everything works fine except there are annoying scrollbars in the viewer because the server's desktop resolution is so much higher than the viewer's. Is there a way to: Scale the server's desktop down to the viewer's resolution. I know there will be a loss of image quality, but I am willing to try it out. This should be something like how Windows Media Player or VLC scales down the window (and does some interpolation of pixels). Automatically shrink the resolution of the server to the client's when I connect and scale the resolution back when I disconnect. This seems like a less attractive solution. Any other solution that gurus out there use? I am sure someone has experienced this before (annoying scroll bars) so there must be a solution out there.

• Erase just the free space on my hard drive

  I'm about to give away an older computer with just the Windows XP operating system intact and all other programs uninstalled. However, upon peeking at the "free space" with software called "Recuva", I notice lots of deleted things that could be recoverable. Some of these include sensitive data files, pdfs, and other personal items that I would not want retrieved. I ran a program called "Eraser" to try and overwrite that data, but it failed to do an adequate job. I also tried to do the job with "Glary Utilities" but it failed too. Short of installing a new, very cheap hard drive and re-installing the bare bones operating system, I'm out of ideas. EDIT - WOW!!! I was not really expecting this many GREAT ideas. My next question is this. If I go the DBAN route and truely wipe the hard drive, then restore my disc image (I use Acronis True Image) will it also restore the free space data? Does imaging just copy readable data? I have an old image of when the OS was first installed.

  I have a new OU (natorg.local\NATO\Users) that I am trying to apply GP to. I have created a new user in this OU, and linked the 3 GPO's to this OU: DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (AppData) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Desktop) DESKTOP - Folder Redirection (Documents) Hopefully the names are sufficient to suggest what they do exactly. The settings are under User Settings so there is no Loopback processing required (if my understanding is correct). • "Run As Administrator" on program right click failing and not launching program

  This problem lies within a relatively fresh x64 Windows 7 install ~4 weeks, but is also a problem I have seen on Windows Vista machines (x86 versions). Since the other day, any programs attempted to be launched via right clicking on a shortcut (.lnk)'s context menu and pressing - "Run As Administrator" for instance, in the Quick Launch/Jump List in Windows 7 has failed, screen has not dimmed, no UAC popup. In fact the program does not even load. There is no way around this unless I use the shortcut version from "All Programs" which appears to work, very strange? I have performed no major software installs, nothing out of the ordinary. Has anybody encountered this or know what would be causing it? • Running multiple services on different servers with IPv6 and a FQDN

  One of the things NAT has permitted us to do in the past decade is split physical services onto different servers whilst hiding behind a single interface. For example, I have example.com behind a NAT on 192.0.2.10. I port-forward :80 and :443 to my web server. I'm also port forward :25 to my mail server, and :3389 to a terminal server and :8080 to the web interface of my computer that downloads torrents, and the story goes on. So I have 5 port forwardings going to 4 different computers on example.com. Then, I go and get me some neat IPv6. I assign example.com an IPv6 address of 2001:db8:88:200::10. That's great for my websites, but I want to go to example.com:8080 to get to my torrents, or example:3389 to log on to my terminal server. How can I do this with IPv6, as there is no NAT. Sure, I could create a bunch of new DNS entries for each new service, but then I have to update all my clients who are used to just typing example.com to get to either the website or the terminal server. My users are dumber than two bricks so they won't remember to connect to rdp.example.com. What options do I have for keeping NAT-style functionality with IPv6? In case you haven't figured it out, the above scenario is not a real scenario for me, or perhaps anyone yet, but it's bound to happen eventually. You know, with devops and all.

• Extract large zip file (50 GB) on Mac OS X

  I was trying to move the files to another hard drive. So I archived all my photos in one large ZIP file using the Mac OS X built-in compress function. But the file failed to extract. I've tried many programs, but none of the programs I tried were able to extract the file. I've tried Mac OS X's extract utility, StuffIt Expander, 7-Zip (command line), all failed. Mac's archive utility and StuffIt don't seem to support large files, and 7-Zip's command line version gave an error stating unsupported archive. I have no luck in Windows either as many of my files have Chinese filenames, and couldn't extract to the correct name under Windows. Are there some programs that can support large files, can handle files compressed using Mac OS X's compress function, and can support UTF-8 filename? With or without GUI is fine. Update Well, I had made the wrong decision to compress the files, and it's already too late. I thought I should be able to extract the file if I could compress it. It's too late, the original copies are gone, only a large ZIP file left here. I have tried using 'unzip', but it says End-of-central-directory signature not found. I guess it doesn't have large file support as well. I would try the Windows Vista method as stated by SuperMagic, but I need to borrow a computer for that. Anyway, thank you everyone, but please provide more suggestions on what software that could possibly extract that file.

• Customizing user privileges for an account in Windows (xp/vista/7)?

  Hello, I'm a .NET developer and recently learning WINDOWS API. When ever a program starts, my Kaspersky anti-virus says "application belonging to trusted group is trying to set debug previleges". I started wondering what are debug privileges? When ever application tries to open a file (using OpenFileDialog) it gives this message about debug privileges. It sometimes also says the so & so application is trying to read desktop.ini I'm not sure about what exactly it is either. Any way, my concern is about user previlages. When creating user account. We can only set the account to be either Administrative or Limited user. • ADSL with RFC 2684 Bridging

  My new ADSL line is now enabled, I can finally use my Netgear DM111Pv2 to use to the Internet. My ISP has told me a big surprise : I don't need to use a login and a password to connect to the Internet, then I must use the RFC 2684 bridging mode. It works pretty fine on the ADSL modem's side, but I've spent one night trying to figure out how to connect to the Internet through this modem. I only have a Fonera 2.0n and a computer running Gentoo Linux. I've been following this README carefully and this tutorial on setting up a PPPoE connection with Gentoo, but the PPPoE interface just tries to start, and nothing special related to PPP happens, I can't see the interface when I do ifconfig. So, I'm asking you if there's something huge I've been missing since the beginning ! Maybe I should wait to buy a new router fully supporting the RFC2684 bridging mode, but I'm more interested in setting up this mode on my Fonera 2.0n and even my Raspberry Pi !

• Windows Media Player 12 Library import keeps dying

  I cannot get WMP 12 to import my library. I have searched around various forums and tried all the common solutions like disabling Media Sharing, deleted my %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player directory and tried reimporting, etc. but nothing works. I have even removed the Media features from Windows setup and re-added them. I have a large mp3 collection shared on the network from another Windows box. I add the folder (tried as a mapped drive and UNC path) and it begins importing. After about 30 minutes into the import (the CurrentDatabase_372.wmdb hits just under 400MB) my WMP player stops importing and all of the icons in WMP turn to red x's and my library is gone. I close and reopen WMP 12 and the library is empty and the CurrentDatabase_372.wmdb is small and it strarts importing again. Rinse, lather, repeat. I am going nuts as WMP11 on Vista handles this same setup perfectly. I am at my wits end on what else to try. I am running a legit Windows 7 Ultimate X64 RTM install. Here is a screenshot of what WMP12 looks like when the import dies: Any other ideas? Edit: OK, I Just confirmed this is definitely a problem not specific to my computer or configuration. I just did a clean installation of Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on an old test machine, opened WMP12 and added the same network folder of mp3's and it crashed about an hour into the import with the same appearance as the screenshot I posted above and the library disappears. So the problem has to be one of several things: The large size of the library The fact that the library is on the network A specific file or file is causing it the player to crash

• Why can I not access the internet when Windows 7 finds no issue with the ethernet connection and the network can see my device?

  So I just moved from a house to an apartment. In the house and the apartment I had Uverse set up - and in both I had my desktop connected via a ~40 foot long cat5 cable. However, upon moving to the apartment I found that my ethernet connection no longer provides internet. This would seem like a mundane problem if not for: The router can see the computer on the network Windows 7 (the desktop's OS) detects no problems with the ethernet connection. Connections over the internet (i.e. browser windows, Pandora, etc.) do not immediately fail. Instead they load for 2 minutes and then finally give up. Devices connected over the Wifi (PS4, Laptop) access the internet just fine While removing the cat5 cable from my house, I accidentally damaged the locking tab but managed to bend it back into the appropriate position. I would suspect that a bad cat5 cable might be to blame if not for the above issues (thought I've heard bad cat5 cables cause the most nonsensical problems) and the fact that I tested the cat5 cable by having it share internet between my laptop (working internet) to my desktop and it functioned just fine and provided the desktop with internet. My ipconfig /all successfully finds a default gateway, DHCP server, and DNS server. What could possibly be causing the problem?

• MMC crashes on Windows Server 2008 x64 - Exchange console, event viewer

  Help! I don't know what happened; this server has been very reliable but suddenly began having problems with a particular .NET 2.0 web site simply hanging - it wouldn't load at all. However, another ASP.NET site was still fine. Reinstalling the site didn't fix it, nor did deleting and re-creating the application within IIS. Trying the event viewer was met with a horrifying "Microsoft Management Console has stopped working". Some Googling led me to believe the .NET framework was the problem. I found a tool called the .NET cleanup tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8904493.aspx - which cleaned out .NET entirely. I reinstalled .NET 1.1 and 3.5 (which installed 2.0 and 3.0 as well). Using the .NET verification tool - http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/pages/8999004.aspx - I believe these have all installed ok. However, my server is in worse shape now. The Exchange 2010 Management Console crashes with an MMC error and now my other (previously reliable) .NET web app now hangs on loading too. I thought I should use Computer Management to remove and re-add the application and web server roles but sure enough, MMC crashes. If anyone can help I will be extremely grateful. Thank you !

I'm trying to create a rule to move all messages that I receive to a specific folder. There is a condition that applies to messages "where my name is in the To or Cc box," but it doesn't let me specify what "my name" is. Not surprisingly, it only affects messages that have not been sent to an alias. So far, I found a solution as follows: I select the condition that applies to messages with specific words in the recipient's address, and I enter my address and aliases as those "words." It's kind of an awkward hack, but it works. Normally, this wouldn't be much of an issue, but I have a "family computer" that is shared among my parents and myself, and I don't want their e-mails and mine to be jumbled together in the Inbox. So my questions are: Is there a solution that is less awkward than the one I used? Alternatively, is there a way to assign multiple e-mail addresses (or aliases) to one account? Thanks!

• Does Hyper-V support SCSI Pass-through discs in a Server 2003 R2 VM?

  I'm running into some difficulties getting pass-through disks to be accessible to a Hyper-v server 2003 r2 virtual machine. Host OS : Server 2008 R2 full w/Hyper-V role Guest OS : Server 2003 R2 (Windows Home Server) The guest's OS disk is a pass-through disk on the IDE controller (not the best solution, but I can live with it). My storage disks will be pass-through disks on the SCSI controller. I'm able to see all of the disks that I'll be using for the VM on the host without issue. The problem that I'm having is that I can't seem to get the guest OS to be able to 'see' the storage drives (as pass-through disks on the SCSI controller). Here's what I'm doing : On the host, the storage drive is set to 'Offline' just like the OS disk (this is required for pass-through to work). In the VM, the storage drive is on the SCSI controller. Hyper-V Integration Tools are installed in guest. That's as far as I'm able to get. I don't see the drive in Computer Management, or in Windows Explorer (I've tried with an unformatted disk, as well as after formatting a partition). I am able to see a removable device that lists the disk's model number in the Guest, but I can't seem to access the storage. (I get an entry in Device Manager that needs drivers, but nothing on the Integration Tools disc works..) Trouble-shooting steps I've tried : If put the pass-through drive on the IDE controller, I can see it in the Guest. If put the storage drive 'Online' in the host and create a VHD on it on the SCSI controller, I can see it in the Guest. I suppose I could create a fixed-size VHD that consumes the entire disk, but I'd rather not have that overhead. I've also extracted the contents of the Integration Tools drivers (x86 and amd64) and tried pointing the disk controller to each of those, with no luck. Can anyone offer suggestions as to how I can get this to work properly?

• need to stop mysql server on my mac os x

  I just installed xampp on my mac os x. When I tried start mysql it display a message that mysql is already running on this computer. In order to start mysql stop first mysql. • Can't access server on LAN new Router

  Earlier this week my roommates decided to change the router we are using for our home network. On the old router I had no problems accessing a laptop running Mint Linux over the network(SSH, FTP, and Shared Folders). However I am now not able to connect. I have verified the IP address of my Linux machine has not changed and I have no problems connecting to our NAS(WDMYCLOUD). The new router is a D-Link DIR-868L. PuTTY is giving me a Timed Out error(was giving me a EHOSTUNREACH before). Running Windows 8.1 the connecting laptop, but tried connecting using my phone via SSH did not work either. • Is there a way to "burn" audio to an ISO? (as an audio CD)

  I have an audiobook that I've downloaded via their download manager, and it's loaded into their cutesy little audio program that they force you to use. I can play the book just fine using their proprietary software, and while it's annoying when using my PC, it's utterly UNBEARABLE when I try to listen to it on my Blackberry. The program is INSANELY slow, it literally takes around 30 seconds to switch between tracks, so if I've forgotten where I am in the book it takes me around 15 minutes to finally get to where I was at. I've looked everywhere on how to transcode the book to .MP3, but evidently with their current format it's either extremely convoluted (and I have no desire to dick around with installing some older version of the codec, getting a different transcoding app, and then wrestling with getting it to actually work). Since I'm able to burn a copy of the book to an audio CD, I figure the best way to go about this is to just make the CDs and then rip them off of those to .MP3. In order to avoid wasting two hours, not to mention 14 CD-R's, I was wondering if there's a way to "burn" to an .ISO instead of an actual CD-R. I currently have SlySoft's Virtual CloneDrive installed, so I can mount .ISO's easily enough, but now I want to actually create an ISO via the CD burning process. Just in case I've not explained myself very well, here is an overview of what I intend to do: "Burn" a set of Audio CD .ISOs from the audiobook (hopefully I can do this using Windows Media Player, otherwise I'll be forced to use the audiobook app) Mount an .ISO in Virtual CloneDrive Rip the audio tracks on the mounted .ISO to .MP3s Repeat steps 2-3 until the entire book is in .MP3 format Copy .MP3s to my Blackberry so that I'm not driven insane every time I want to listen to the book in the car, and be able to use Winamp when listening on my computer EDIT: I'd suppose a rather concise way to put it is that I need something that will emulate a CD-R drive, so that you can select it as the output drive in whatever app your burning the audio CD from. (I'd suppose that when you "insert a blank CD-R" the app would then ask you what file to save to)

• I love google Chrome, but some non-static pages like Piwik render it unresponsive

  The web-stat software Piwik stops reacting on mouse clicks after 1-2 seconds. The same is true for Google Maps and Producteev (but GMail and most other pages work like a charm). These rely heavily on JS, and work without Flash. I can click for a very short time period and then the mouse cursor doesn't feel the UI anymore (it doesn't turn into a I over input fields, though it moves; if the freeze occured while the pointer was over an input field, the cursor keeps being a I) and all clicks on the DOM are being ignored by Chrome. No message appears, neither obvious nor in the Console (F12). There is no obstructing div or the like in the DOM (F12). Since I couldn't find any hints on the source of my problems, I suspected my plugins and extensions. Unfortunately, neither deactivating all plugins nor all extensions solved the problem. for the problematic pages, it always happens no Dropbox running several GB of free RAM the taskmanager doesn't show any high CPU or memory utilization (the offending tab uses 30 MB and uses 0-1 % CPU) all problematic pages work in other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, IE) the rest of the computer is very responsive the computers use different security suites (Kaspersky and Avira) The effect exists between several (synchronized) Chrome instances on different machines, all running Windows 7. Both the OS and Chrome are updated automatically. Other tabs and the Chrome chrome (tabs, menus, toolbar buttons of the browser itself) still work. I really don't like switching between browsers. Any ideas?

  I have been trouble shooting this for a few days and cannot fix this anyhow. Computer specifications Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 (Bloomfield) @ 2.67 ( no OC ) RAM: 6144MB RAM GPU: 2x NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1Go in SLI (sli is not enabled anyway at the moment anyway) Drives: OCZ RevoDrive OCZSSDPX-1RVD0120 PCI-E x4 120GB PCI Express MLC Internal SSD [RAID-0]. (I know this could potentilly cause trouble but I had the BSOD before using this drive) Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bare Drive Click here for a log of a crash I just had. Some info Occurence: It seems pretty random so far, haven't noticed any kind of pattern I tried: Windows memory diagnostic (went smoothly at 1066mhz) As I said, it was still happening on my HDD, so when I bought the revodrive I install a new OS on there and still got the error, I believed it happened and I had no drivers installed at that point (not 100% sure) Change the following registry value to 1 (true): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager \MemoryManagement\ClearPageFileAtShutdown Tried to lower even more ram clock Made sure ram timing was set to recommended by manufacturer Verified if motherboard was in good physical condition (yes and its brand new) There is one thing to note, when I got the new motherboard, I installed the new drivers WITHOUT formatting and the I removed the motherboard drivers that I could remove from the control panel (pretty much the first things that have been installed). Could this cause an issue even ON THE OTHER drive (revodrive). Hopefully someone can help me, I am getting tired of this, spending so much money and cannot get this to work correctly. • LAN network (switch?)

  I am working on setting up the network for a small LAN party (less than 16 people). Most of them do not have wireless cards in their rigs, so I need to set up some way for everyone to a) play LAN games and b) access the internet. The LAN party will probably take place in my basement, where I have enough space. However, the basement is not wired up with the router which is actually on the floor above. I make a cantenna a while back that can boost the wireless performance of my computer significantly. How can I use this to provide internet and LAN to guests? My hope was that I could use a switch like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833181166 for the LAN - but how can I give people access to the internet? Is there such thing as a network extender / 16-port switch? Obviously, the internet performance doesn't need to be super stellar, because the games will be using LAN - so I am looking to provide some usable internet for web browsing, and very high speed LAN for games.
