• USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting in windows and linux

  I have a problem similar to what is described at "Why is my USB mouse disconnecting and reconnecting randomly and often?" except is is happening in both Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu 12/04TLS, fully patched), multiple mice, multiple OSs. It stops responding to input for about 3-5 seconds, then starts responding again. It's more frequent and lasts longer when running games (TF2, L4D, Dishonored, Borderlands 2, and more), but happens when just running the OS as well. I was hoping it was the motherboard so I bought a USB 2.0 PCI card to try that, but it's still happening. I've stripped it down to just the keyboard and mouse (different keyboard too just in case the keyboard was the problem), but it's still happening. All the hardware (mice and keyboards) work fine on other computers. I have literally pulled the mouse and keyboard out and plugged them into another computer (laptop) and re-joined the online game and had no problem with the keyboard and mouse combo that just failed on my gaming rig. Please no driver / Windows or Linux only suggestions, as that wouldn't effect both OSs. edit: known good mice I've brought home are now going bad. I suspect the hardware is messed up (voltage?) and has been frying the mice.

• "The directory name is invalid" when trying to install drivers in Windows 7 via Device Manager

  First off, this computer is not mine, it's a customer's system. Having said that... The hard drive was moved to a new motherboard, CPU, RAM combo, and booted up fine. Customer puts in driver CD, drivers won't load. He brings it into me. Under Device Manager for Windows 7 x64, I see lots of PCI to PCI bridge, one SMBus Controller, and about 20 Unknown Devices. Greeeeeat... So I start with the SMBus driver directly from the Asus website for the motherboard (P8H77-M Pro). If I install from the setup program, it tells me to reboot, then it starts the install. It gets half way through the setup, then fails (An unknown error occurred. Setup will exit). When I try to point to the folder from Device Manager, it starts copying files for the driver, even presents me with the proper name of the device, but says that an error has occurred there as well: The directory name is invalid. Doing some Googling, I saw that many people had this issue with Vista. K, Vista and 7 are similar, maybe the solutions are the same... But they aren't. I tried: Copying the entire driver folder and setup utility to the Program Files folder and running it / selecting it in DM Downloading another set of drivers in case this one is corrupt Disabling UAC Deleting and recreating the %WINDIR%\TEMP folder Removing all references to previous hardware that I could find, even in Device Manager's hidden mode So far, nothing has worked. A wipe and reload will be out of the question

• How to compress .pdfs in word 2007?

  Hi I am trying to send my cover letter and resume away but apparently it is too big to send through craigs list(my computer says the total size is 500kb) as it has a 600kb limit(so small should be at least a meg). Hi there. You recently tried to email Some job Email, an anonymous craigslist address. However, your message was too big to be sent through our system. Craigslist has a 600KB limit on the messages we'll send. Please reduce the size of your mail and try again. Thanks for using craigslist. So when I convert my word 2007(.docx) files to pdf they become huge. Like they got from 32kb to 320kb. So is there a way I can either get around craigslist limits or compress my pdfs a bit to make it happy. I don't want to send zips and stuff since the person who gets it might not even know what to do. I rather not send .docx since not sure if will have office 2007 or the compatibility view installed and I rather just send it as pdf(as some place require it anyways to be in pdfs). Thanks

  I'm having an issue with SenderBase. My IPs are not blocked in any BLs but people who use SenderBase/Ciscos stuff do not get my emails. Is this because my email system is setup poorly? They list the following: Your email server or a computer in your network may be infected with malware and may be used to send spam. You may have an insecure network which is allowing other parties to use your network to send spam. Your email server may be misconfigured and might relay spam. You may be utilizing a dynamic IP that is not allowed to relay email directly to the Internet. I have just my site running CPanel. As far as I know there is no spam or abuse. What should I check to ensure that the mail systems (Exim) are up to standards? I have the server pretty well configured so I just can't see the system being abused without me knowing it. What standards should I be ensuring my e-mail server aligns up to?

At best I get 30Mbs (this is an internet download) from a technology that boasts 300Mbs, even worse is the LAN where to date best i have ever gotten is 1Mbs. • Dell XPS m1530 system cannot boot need 130w or greater

  I have a Dell XPS M1530 and I lost my old AC adapter but ordered a new one. For the longest time it always had a battery charge so I was able to boot into the OS but now it is completely dead. I have a generic charger that slowly charged the laptop when it was in the OS but does not when the computer is off. When I boot up I get the following error: The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. The system can only boot with a 130 W power adapter or greater. Strike F1 key to shutdown. I cannot even enter the BIOs setup screen or boot menu, is there a way around this? I heard from the local tech that Dell has a special feature to boot from thumb drive before getting past the initial logo. I am doing my best to avoid purchasing a new charger since it worked just fine when the OS was running, I am hoping to get this thing going. Is there a way to charge the battery externally? • Dual Monitor Setup with Ati Radeon Hd 5700 results in unusabledesktop win7

  I have an ATI Radeon HD 5700 card which i've been using under fully updated windows 7 with its latest drivers. My monitor is a 2004 NEC LCD1703M which despite being pretty old runs fine. A friend gave me an IIYAMA ProLite E1900WS monitor (2009 or 20010 ). Both monitors are vga only. I've been using a DLDVI to VGA adapter to connect my old monitor and tested the same adapter to the new monitor and it worked fine. So I bought an HDMI to vga adapter with the purpose of having a dual monitor setup. But when both screens are connected to the card the following problem occurs: The monitor connected to the hdmi port cycles between sleep and a black screen while the other shows the operating system for about two seconds before getting black for another two seconds. I can "use" the computer (move the mouse,click,type e.t.c.) while this happens but its not something pleasant. I tried reinstalling the driver, booting with both screens connected (in which case the powerup messages and the bios are mirrored in both screens until I get to the login screen where everything falls apart) Funny thing is, everything works if I disconnect the ATI graphics card and use the onboard intel one. So, any suggestions as to what might be the problem and how I can fix it?

  I'm trying to deploy an MSI via the Group Policy in Active Directory. But these are the errors I'm getting in the System event log after logging in: The assignment of application XStandard from policy install failed. The error was : %%1274 The removal of the assignment of application XStandard from policy install failed. The error was : %%2 Failed to apply changes to software installation settings. The installation of software deployed through Group Policy for this user has been delayed until the next logon because the changes must be applied before the user logon. The error was : %%1274 The Group Policy Client Side Extension Software Installation was unable to apply one or more settings because the changes must be processed before system startup or user logon. The system will wait for Group Policy processing to finish completely before the next startup or logon for this user, and this may result in slow startup and boot performance. When I reboot and log in again I simply get the same messages about needing to perform the update before the next logon. I'm on a Windows Vista 32-bit laptop. I'm rather new to deploying via group policy so what other information would be helpful in determining the issue? I tried a different MSI with the same results. I'm able to install the MSI using the command line and msiexec when logged into the computer, so I know the MSI is working ok at least.

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • Python coding with VLC player (quite a basic query I expect)

  I'm fairly new to the whole coding realm so my knowledge is fairly limited, and I can't seem to find any basic tutorials on how to use scripts with VLC player. More specifically, the reason I'm asking here is because I stumbled across a post on this site about playing random clips from random videos on VLC player automatically. This is the forum post: Playback random section from multiple videos changing every 5 minutes My situation is similar to this lovely gentleman's was, though he clearly knows a lot more about coding than I do. In short, I'd like to copy this coding into a file of some sort and apply it to VLC player myself. Only I'm not sure what file type I'd have to save it as (I have Python by the way, and I tried saving it as a .py file but I didn't know if it was correct or where to go from there). Additionally, I'm not sure how to get VLC to "read" the script, so to speak - is there a specific location the file needs to be, and do I run the script from another program or through VLC? I'll reiterate that I'm relatively new to this, so if anybody would be so kind as to post a quick list of steps on how to save/place the file and use it with VLC player I really would appreciate it! P.S. I'm not computer illiterate, I'm fine with most programs and I'd understand if you just said things like "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\plugins" or "in VLC, select Tools Plugins and extensions", I just wouldn't catch on to anything about adding a line of coding that does something without being told exactly what to write!   Mostly I still have that old 'ultraportable' laptop that is mostly like a pre-netbook era laptop and a friend and programmer needs a computer because the one he was using just broke and he has to wait until the new one arrive in 4-6 weeks ... This laptop has no LAN connection and CD-ROM so be prepared for a real challenge! All hardware is well supported on Windows XP (included drivers on the Windows XP CD) and on Linux out-of-the-box (but the screen need a special configuration.) Mostly any Linux that will work well with Skype (USB or regular headset), any MSN client and a text writer for code will do. What I have tested so far: Slitaz 2 don't boot because the floppy of GRUB4DOS don't see the USB drive (fully working and tested on my regular laptop), Damn Small Linux was working but was needing a special screen configuration that I don't remember (in the boot options of the floppy) and now I'm thinking about Puppy Linux that is seen to work totally out of the box with it but I will need an old Puppy version (1 or 2 I think) and the Wakepup floppy ... If you got some ideas to help or to try I'm open!

• Windows XP Language, explorer.exe

  Hi, I was given by my company a laptop with Windows XP Professional in Spanish. I would like to translate it to English, since I really DISLIKE to use localized versions of programs. I have read about Windows MUI packs, however you MUST have Windows XP Pro in English in order to translate it to other language, you can't translate it TO English from other language. Since reinstalling the OS using a Win XP CD in english is not an option (don't have the license nor the CD, and don't have domain privileges to rejoin my computer to the domain), I was wondering what are the essential files that contain localized strings of text. I was doing some research, and apparently explorer.exe has many of the Windows Error Messages and other strings. Will replacing my original explorer.exe with one from Windows XP in English be enough (and work) for having a "basic" english version of windows? Im mainly interested in having error messages, start menu, and the control panel in english. Also, does it HAVE to be the same version as the Service Pack im running? Besides explorer.exe are there any other essential files that i should try to get and replace? Do you see any "dangers" in replacing this files with english version ones? • Least CPU intensive way of streaming your screen on windows?

  Hello, sometimes I like capturing my screen for others to see. Only thing: I am playing games while I do it. I have tried a few streaming solutions where Windows Media Encoder coupled with my own Windows server appealed to me most, because I can change resolutions, etc. I also tried ustream coupled with the Flash applet and the Adobe Flash Encoder recording a Camtasia source. Camtasia has the disadvantage though that it shows the green-and-black-alternating borders and can not be targeted fullscreen. I like how xfire does it. But it doesn't work with every game, many are simply not supported. A few thoughts about this: Is there a program which captures like Fraps or XFire (based on Direct3D and OpenGL outputs) and exposes the output to a DirectShow source filter? Which brings me to: Is there hardware accelerated capturing directly from the graphics card? Maybe including direct encoding with help from OpenCL? Modern graphic cards decode BluRay content directly for example. I should have a modern enough graphics processor for this to be possible (see below). If using Windows Media Encoder: Which are the least CPU intensive settings? Which codec? Is there a newer codec than Windows Media 9? Is it less CPU intensive? I only have 7, 8 and 9 inside the Encoder Could the performance be massively increased by having a Quad-Core CPU (see below)? Bandwidth is no problem up to 1000 to 1500 kbit/s (I have 2048). • Instant connection to wireless network but delayed internet access on Mediacom with Windows 7

  I have Mediacom cable internet and their provided modem/wireless router a Cisco DPC3825. Each of the laptops experiencing the trouble have Windows 7 64-bit. When connecting to the wireless network each computer will take a second or two to connect and then toggle from "no internet access" to "internet access" however, no websites are accessible for about five minutes after connecting. After that, there aren't any problems. It happens on all 3 of the laptops I have available and none of them have problems on any other network. It seems like my phone doesn't have the delay issue when it connects. I've power cycled the modem/router along with a DNS flush. I have some of the DNS servers manually set to Google DNS addresses and one just default. I've contacted and had Mediacom support try all its tricks. They changed the SSID and password along with resetting the thing remotely a handful of times. It was installed just this month and seemed to pass the tech's checks upon installation. Nothing in the settings has been changed, but it's been exhibiting this problem from the get go. • Mac Share Points automatically authenticate with matching Windows AD credentials from Windows

  I recently started administering an OS X server (10.8) that is on the same network as our AD domain. While setting up Mac Share Points, I encountered some odd behavior that I hope someone can explain. For the purposes of this example assume the following: 1) Local User on OS X Server: frank, password: Help.2012 2) AD Domain User: frank, password: Help.2012 3) AD Domain: mycompany 4) OS X Server hostname: macserver (not bound to AD, not running OD) When joined to the domain on a a Win 7 computer and logged in as frank and accessing the shares at \\macserver, it automatically authenticates using frank's OS X credentials (because they are the same). However, if I change frank's OS X password, the standard Windows authentication dialog pops-up preset to use frank's AD domain (my company\frank). However, after entering the new OS X password, it will not authenticate without changing the domain to local (.\frank). Basically, if a user in AD has the same User name and password in OS X, it will authenticate automatically regardless of the domain. If the passwords differ, authenticating to the OS X shares must be done from the local machine. (and slightly off topic - how come an OS X administrator can access the root drives on the Mac server from Windows when accessing the Mac shares even when they aren't shared? In other words, it will show all the shared folders from "File Sharing" plus whatever drives are mounted in OS X)

• How to eliminate the downtime when a dynamic IP address changes?

  We currently have a number of client computers linked up to a database server (MS SQL 2008) for replication. The database server recognises the computers based on their Windows hostname. We are using dynamic IP addresses at this time because we tend to change the computers’ hardware quite frequently, and so the MAC address may be different. Unless static IP has a good way for us to manage frequent changing of MAC addresses, we are keeping it to dynamic IP. The problem with dynamic IP addresses, however, is that when a client fetches an new IP from the DHCP, ie, there is a change in the IP address, there is going to have a downtime for the hostname to reflect the new IP address, the client’s DNS cache of the hostname to reload, and also the server’s DNS cache to reload to see the new IP from the hostname. All of these have different timings and the delay can be really bad at times. Restarting the computer doesn't work all the time too. The clients are on Windows 7. How can I eliminate the amount of downtime required when there is a change in IP in the case of dynamic IP addresses?

• corrupted, hidden, wireless network adapter from "Network Connections" in Windows 7

  The issue is that when I install a wireless network adapter on my Windows 7 Professional machine I have no connectivity, the system tray icon has a red X. First, I tried the obvious, install updated drivers from the manufacturer. When I did this, the Network Connections icon had gray bars and there was no connectivity. So I tried installling the network adapter on a different computer on the same network and I verified that it does work with no issues. Next, I ran scan disk with no issues. Next, I ran sfc as admin with no issues. At this point I turned to the router and turned SSID broadcast on but that didn't help. I turned MAC address filtering off at the router but that didn't help. Whenever I installed the original network adapter (a wireless N usb adapter with WPA2 TKIP+AES) it showed up as "Wireless Network Connection 2" with a grayed out icon and no connectivity. Lastly, I tried installing two different "verified working" usb wireless adapters on to the Windows 7 Pro machine. The results were the same "Wireless Network Connection 2" that had a green bar icon but no connectivity. I installed the manufacturers software and it indicated the NIC was not there even thought the driver installed successfully in Device Manager. I guess I should mention, I first tried (insanely in vain) to use the (worthless) Windows Network troubleshooter. The results were....drumroll please... There is a problem with the network adapter... well No Duh! Also, during all of this the network adapter is always showing as "Working Properly" in the properties dialogue of Device Manager for the wireless NIC. I checked for hidden devices in Device Manager but there were none. Here is my fundamental question that I've tried to find in the Windows 7 support center with no luck. How do I remove/delete/uninstall network adapters from the Windows 7 registry? in particular hidden, corrupted network adapters, that used to be working.

• Why are folders disappearing in Windows XP?

  I am researching a problem for a friend, and unfortunatly do not have direct access to his computer. I've tried to gather as much information as possible and I have researched it on various websites. I've not found anyone having the same problem my friend is having. So here goes: He has a media server in his home running Microsoft Windows XP. It has 3 drives, 1 for the OS and 2 for mass storage. Not long ago he went to access one of the mass storage media drives and it was empty, except for a single folder. His first assumption was that his roommate had deleted everything on the drive (excluding the remaining folder). He then checked the properties of the drive and it was still saying that the hard drive was nearly full. I told him to check the recycling bin, thinking that whoever deleted them didn't clear them from recycling and that they were still taking up space on the drive. My friend said the recycling bin was empty. So we have a drive that the Windows file management system says is empty (again except for the remaining folder), but the properties of the drive say it's mostly full. Now it gets weirder My friend tried to create a new folder on this drive and it auto-named itself "New Folder(1)" which means that it recognizes there is already a "New Folder" in that directory. He tried to rename it to a name that he KNEW was there previsouly, and Windows wouldn't allow it because it was a duplicate folder name. SO now it seems the folders are there, but not displaying in Windows Explorer. Both of us have no idea why this is occuring, why the folders vanished, why the one remaining folder didn't vanish, or how to make them visable again. Anyone else ever experience this? I can get more details if needed.

  I have a SharePoint 2010 VM setup in VirtualBox and I was using local machine accounts to handle security on the server. While preparing for a demo it came time to have some meaningful users on my VM image. I followed some docs on promoting my server to a Domain Controller in a new forrest. So now I have [MachineName].SPDEMO.CONTOSO.com and I can add users as needed. However, when I try to connect to my SharePoint sites I am getting a white screen with the error: "Cannot connect to the configuration database" I changed the pool identity account of each of my IIS app pools to the new Administrator account and started the services successfully but I can't get the SQL services to start up. When I try to start them I get the following error: Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 17058. In the event log I see the following error: The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated with service-specific error %%17058. Can I recover from this or should I roll back or just uninstall the Domain Controller role. I'd like to keep the server as a standalone DC so I can do some user profile creation/management but I need the SharePoint bits to work as well.

• Limiting bandwith on an Windows 7 machine

  I need to limit the bandwidth on my Windows 7 x64 machine. In the past (on XP) I've been able to use NetLimiter for similar tasks. However for some reason I can't get it to work anymore. For lower limits the bandwidth tests are able to exceed the limit by 10-50%; higher limits seem to be ignored completely and the bandwidth tests report download speeds of over 10 times the speed I set. I'm using speedtest.net and some similar service from my ISP for these tests. Anyway, I don't necessarily need a program as complex as NetLimiter since I only need to throttle my machine's bandwidth, not a specific program's. In case you are wondering why in the world I'd want to cripple my Internet speed, there is a funny story behind this. Long story short, my modem gets random disconnects. Tech support comes in, says my Internet speed is abnormally high and I must be using some tools to somehow make it go faster than it's supposed to and this messes up my modem. I check the connection with another computer and it seems that my PC is the only one in my network that gets abnormal speeds. I reinstall my OS, speed looks normal at first, after I install the batch of 50 or so updates, it goes back to abnormally high speeds and the disconnect problems are not solved. Now I don't have a clue if the explanation the tech team gave me was just a strategy to lay the blame on someone else, but I was trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and see what happens if I really reduce my speed to their specification. Any help appreciated.

• SQL Server 2005 SP3 on Windows 7 - No Management Studio

  I've been trying for a day and a half now to get SQL Server 2005, DEV edition, to work on Windows 7, 64 bit prof. I install from the disk, then run SP 3. I get a failure on the Client Components section of the Installation Progress along with this vague message - Product : Client Components Product Version (Previous): 1399 Product Version (Final) : Status : Failure Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQLTools9_Hotfix_KB955706_sqlrun_tools.msp.log Error Number : 1712 Error Description : MSP Error: 1712 One or more of the files required to restore your computer to its previous state could not be found. Restoration will not be possible. I've uninstalled all Visual Studio and tried to make this as clean as possible, and have read a lot of the blog posts, but am really at my wits end about this. I am not a DBA, but I use SQL Server all the time when coding and testing apps. Does anyone have any ideas as to where I can get this sorted out? I've been ati this for a long time and have never encountered an installation as bad as this one. Thanks Mike Thomas

• Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server

  I'm using Windows 7 Beta and trying to install a web application locally. This web site uses Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express (SQLEXPRESS) and a MDB file in the web site's ~/App_Data folder. I was instructed to configure IIS7 to use Classic .NET AppPool for this web application. Each time the web site loads, I receive the following error: There was an error trying to connect to the Database Server: Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to failure in retrieving the user's local application data path. Please make sure the user has a local user profile on the computer. The connection will be closed. The Internet is packed with articles written on this subject. The prevailing wisdom seems to be: Configure the SQL Express Service to use the Local System account. Delete the following directory: C:\Users\username\AppData\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Data\SQLEXPRESS Neither of these fixes have made any impact. I have tinkered with permissions and settings for hours to no avail. Can anyone suggest a fix or help me understand how to get more detailed information about the problem.

• How quickly toggle smart quotes in Word 2010?

  I'm working on a long technical document that contains numerous displays of computer code. In running text, I want my quotation marks to be curly, which means that Word's "smart quotes" autoformatting-as-I-type feature is one I want on. But in code displays, curly quotes are incorrect, so in these cases, I want smart-quotes-as-I-type disabled. Is there a fast way to toggle this setting? Or is there a way I can tie it to the paragraph style I'm in? (I use a distinct style for code displays.) Currently, to toggle the setting, I have to click FileOptionsProofingAutoCorrect Options..."Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"OKOK, which is seven mouse clicks. Toggling it back is another seven mouse clicks. Isn't there a faster way? A keyhboard shortcut to do the toggling or a toolbar button that would toggle it with a single click would be great. Having the setting depend on the paragraph style I was in would be even better.

• Copying large files from USB devices to the internal hard drive fails on Mac OS

  I have a second-generation 13" MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.6 with a 2.13 GHz processor, 4 GB of RAM, and a 256 GB SSD hard disk. I often get failures when I attempt to copy a large file or large collection of files from an external USB drive (typically a "Firewire" generation Drobo) to the internal drive. The failure behaves almost exactly as if I had pulled the USB cable from the computer in mid-transfer. I get a warning that I have removed the hard disk improperly. After this event, the drive no longer appears mounted in the finder, and I have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable to mount the drive again. I have also seen a similar problem when using Aperture 3 to import a large number of photos and videos from a USB Compact Flash card reader. The import will fail and I will have to unplug the Card Reader and import the missing items. Oddly, reversing the direction of the copy seems pretty reliable. I've never had a problem copying a large file to a USB device, meaning that I have quite a few large files which are stranded on my Drobo. Model Identifier: MacBookAir3,2 Boot ROM Version: MBA31.0061.B01 I have seen a similar issue reported on Apple's website: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2648590&tstart=0 The only suggested resolutions there seems to be switching to another form of connectivity (e.g. firewire, which does not exist on MacBook Air), or downgrading to Mac OS 10.6.4, or reverting the USB kernel extensions to the 10.6.4 versions: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12566073#12582956 I'm not too keen on the idea of downgrading kernel extensions. Does anyone know of a hardware revision without this issue that I can trade up to? Are there any other potential solutions out there?
