• Does SQL Server 2005 error message numbers back to the asp.net application?

  I'd like to get the message number and severity level information from SQL Server upon execution of an erroneous query. For example, when a user attempts to delete a row being referenced by another record, and the cascade relationship is "no action", I'd like the application to be able to check for error message 547 ("The DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint...") and return a user friendly and localized message to the user. When running such a query directly on SQL Server, the following message is printed: Msg 547, Level 16, State 0, Line 1 <Error message...> In an Asp.Net app is this information available in an event handler parameter or elsewhere? Also, I don't suppose anyone knows where I can find a definitive reference of SQL Server message numbers?

• Automatic language transformation in editor or IDE [on hold]

  Are there any tools that are capable of editing code but in different language? To be more concrete, I want to parse java source file in editor, compile it to my language X, edit in X and compile back to java on save. Or edit pom.xml file using non-XML syntax. Which editor or IDE would be easiest to use for implementing such prototype? Option to transform only a snippet would be ideal to limit effort on parsing. For one example, Intellij IDEA can display anonymous class so it looks like lambda expression hiding some of boilerplate.

• Is it relevant to warn about truncating real constants to 32 bits?

  I'm toying around with LLVM and looking at what it would take to make yet another strongly-typed language, and now that I'm around the syntax, I've noticed that it seems to be a pet peeve of strongly typed language to warn people that their constants won't fit inside a float: // both in Java and C# float foo = 3.2; // error: implicitly truncating a double into a float // or something along these lines Why doesn't this work in Java and C#? I know it's easy to add the f after the 3.2, but is it really doing anything useful? Must I really be that aware that I'm using single-precision reals instead of double-precision reals? Maybe I'm just missing something (which, basically, is why I'm asking). Note that float foo = [const] is not the same thing as float foo = [double variable], where requiring the cast seems normal to me.

  Which is more common, creating a new variable versus assigning an existing variable (field, array element etc - anything that syntactically uses the assignment operator)? The reason I ask is that I'm designing a new language, and wondering which of these two operations should get the shorter syntax. It's not intended to be a pure functional language, or the question wouldn't arise, so I'd ideally like to count usage across large existing code bases in procedural and object-oriented languages like C, C++ and Java, though as far as I can see there isn't an easy way to do this automatically, and going by memory and eyeball, neither is obviously more common than the other.

• Mod_rewrite with multiple variables

  Hello, I'm using a PHP script that dynamically generates transparent PNGs for use as CSS backgrounds from a query string that takes RGBa and HSLa values. The original script can be found here, I've only added HSLa support. Because background URLs with PHP query strings aren't very pretty, and because it seems to break the IE 6 transparent PNG hack, I thought of using mod_rewrite to allow the script to be called when a .png with this syntax is called : /assets/colors/h[0-360 value]_s[0-100 value]_l[0-100 value]_a[0-100 value].png which would be rewritten to : /assets/colors.php?h=[0-360 value]&s=[0-100 value]&l=[0-100 value]&a=[0-100 value] Here's the issues I'm encountering : passing multiple variables with mod_rewrite using an underscore as a delimiter I know this could be done by passing a single variable and then exploding it in the PHP script, however I would prefer it to be done by Apache. • Scalable way of doing self join with many to many table

  I have a table structure like the following: user id name profile_stat id name profile_stat_value id name user_profile user_id profile_stat_id profile_stat_value_id My question is: How do I evaluate a query where I want to find all users with profile_stat_id and profile_stat_value_id for many stats? I've tried doing an inner self join, but that quickly gets crazy when searching for many stats. I've also tried doing a count on the actual user_profile table, and that's much better, but still slow. Is there some magic I'm missing? I have about 10 million rows in the user_profile table and want the query to take no longer than a few seconds. Is that possible?

• Simple script - execute command on selected file

  I want to make a script that will execute .jar file on selected file. Later I will add that script to right-click menu via the tool Nautilus Actions or just place it into nautilus-scripts folder. I have a problem creating script. When I am in a usual console screen and want to execute this jar file on any other file, I use this syntax myfile.jar ./someotherfile.xml and the jar file will write the output to the console screen. So I created a file script.sh, added lines in it #!/bin/bash /home/username/myfile.jar $1 But it does not output anything. I know I am doing something wrong. Please help. To sum, I need a script that will use selected file as a parameter, open the gnome-terminal, inside that terminal it will start JAR file and pass it the selected file. I am confident that this is a very simple procedure, but I am total newbie with shell scripting.

  Hi all, I have recently started to use Kohana and I know inheritance is in infancy stages at the moment. The work around is using a $_has_one annotation on the child class model. In may case i have "page" as the parent of "article". I have something like, protected $_has_one = array('mypage'=>array('model'=>'page', 'foreign_key'=>'id')); In my controller, I have an action which queries the database. In this query I am trying to access fields form the parent of "article" which is the "page". $n->articles=ORM::factory('article')->where('expires','=',0) ->where('articledate','<',date('y-m-d')) ->where('expirydate','>',date('y-m-d')) ->where('mypage->status','=','PUBLISHED') ->order_by('articledate','desc') ->find_all(); The status column resides in the page table and my query is generating an error to the effect of "cannot find status", clearly because it belongs to the parent. Any ideas ?

  I have 2 tables that I import to EF model. First table has a property [section] that acts as foreign key to the second table. When I map this property in model to the table and try to compile I get this error: Problem in Mapping Fragments starting at lines 158, 174: Non-Primary-Key column(s) [Section] are being mapped in both fragments to different conceptual side properties - data inconsistency is possible because the corresponding conceptual side properties can be independently modified. If i remove this property from the model it passes, but when I query the data I don't have the section field. I was just wondering whether I can take this short-cut of supplying the username (--user) as root in this command itself. If I supply username as root to create my VMs, am I creating/enabling the root user, or just creating a user named as root? p.s.: any better ways to achieve my task are also welcome. But I don't want to manually meddle with each VM after its creation

• Multiple foreign keys from one table linking to single primary key in second table

  Hi all, I have a database with three tables, a household table, an adults table and a users table. The Household table contains two foreign keys, iAdult1ID and iAdult2ID. The Users table has a iUserID primary key and the Adult table has a corresponding iUserID foreign key. One of the columns in the Users table is strUsername, an e-mail address. I am trying to write a query that will allow me to search for an e-mail address for either adult that has a relation to the household. So I have two questions, assuming that all the values are not null, how can I do this? And two, in reality, iAdult2ID can be null, is it still possible to write a query to do this? • $ON_USER returning root instead of $USER

  Hello everybody! With Natty coming out soon, I've been at work updating my deployment and self-config script to make my desktop on 11.04 run and look the way I want it to. One bummer is that dbus seems to have changed and does not permit, in the same manner Lucid and Maverick did, the authentication of the current user by terminal call using grep and cat. Ideally, to run the script, I would sudo -s and then launch it as # chmod +x install && ./install Instead of returning my user name.. it now returns root and applies changes to the root profile and aborts whenever paths do not correspond. Here is my script header: #!/bin/bash ON_USER=$(echo ~ | awk -F'/' '{ print $1 $2 $3 }' | sed 's/home//g') export $(grep -v "^#" ~/.dbus/session-bus/`cat /var/lib/dbus/machine-id`-0) if sudo -u $ON_USER test -z "$DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS" ; then eval `sudo -u $ON_USER dbus-launch --sh-syntax --exit-with-session` fi RELEASE=$(lsb_release -cs) How could I make it return the actual user now that natty is coming? • Can I make PDOStatement->fetchObject not use non-member variables?

  Lets say I have a class like this: Class User { var $id var $name; } And I run a query using PDO in php like so: $stm = $db->prepare('select * from users where id = :id'); $r = $stm->execute(array(':id' => $id)); $user = $r->fetchObject('User'); If I vardump my user object it has all kinds of other fields in it that I have not defined in the User class. Obviously I could make my query specific so that it only gives me back the fields I need/want. But if I don't want to do that is there any way to make this work the way I want it to? I like the idea of fetchObject, because it's one line of code to create this object and set member variables for me. I just don't want it to set variables I haven't defined in my class.

• Does normalization really hurt performance in high traffic sites?

  I am designing a database and I would like to normalize the database. I one query I will joining about 30-40 tables. Will this hurt the website performance if it ever becomes extremely popular? This will be the main query and it will be getting called 50% of the time. The other queries I will be joining about 2 tables. I have a choice right now to normalize or not to normalize but if the normalization becomes a problem in the future i may have to rewrite 40% of the software and it may take me a long time. Does normalization really hurt in this case? Should I denormalize now while I have the time?

I will be running the script on a cronjob and then displaying the tweets on my site from the database to prevent hitting the limit on the twitter API. So I don't want to have duplicate tweets in my database, I understand I can use 'INSERT...ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE' to achieve this, but I don't quite understand how to use it. My database structure is as follows. Table - Hash id (auto_increment) tweet user user_url And currently my SQL to insert is as follows: $tweet = $clean_content[0]; $user_url = $clean_uri[0]; $user = $clean_name[0]; $query='INSERT INTO hash (tweet, user, user_url) VALUES ("'.$tweet.'", "'.$user.'", "'.$user_url.'")'; mysql_query($query); How would I correctly use 'INSERT...ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE' to insert only if it doesn't exist, and update if it does?
