• What is the best way to make a schedule in MFC

  I have a list of items that are each associated with a start and end time and date. What I want to do is, given a time and date range, display only the items that fall within that window, even partially. What I'm doing is creating a CListCtrl with all the items in it and the CListCtrl is sorted by start time by default. But given a time range, I don't know how to search for the first item that is within the range. Another problem with the list control is it displays as a list, whereas it would be nice if there was a control that could also show things that are concurrent side by side. I'm doing this within a dialog application.

• How to inject a "runtime" dependency like a logged in user which is not available at application boot time?

  I'm just not getting this: I use Gin in my java GWT app to do DI. The login screen is integrated into the full application window. After the user has logged in I want to inject the user object into other classes like GUI Presenters which I create, so I have some sort of runtime dependency I believe. How do i do that? One solution I can think of is sth like: class Presenter { @Inject Presenter(LoggedInUserFactory userFactory) { User user = userFactory.getLoggedInUser(); } } class LoggedInUserFactoryImpl { public static User user; User getLoggedInUser() { return user; } } So, when the user is successfully logged in and I have the object i set the static property in LoggedInUserFactory, but this will only work if the Presenter is created after the user has logged in which is not the case. Or should I use a global static registry? I just don't like the idea of having static dependencies in my classes. Any input is greatly appreciated.

  I'm interested in using the Module Pattern to better organize my future projects. Unfortunately, there are only a few brief tutorials and proof-of-concept examples of the Module Pattern. Using the module pattern, I would like to organize projects into this sort of structure: project.arm.object.method(); Where "project" is my global project name, "arm" is a sub-section or branch of the project, "object" is an individual object, and so on to the methods and properties. • align WMD editor's preview HTML with server-side HTML validation (e.g. no embedded javascript)

  There are many SO questions (e.g. here and here) about how to do server-side scrubbing of Markdown produced by the WMD editor to ensure the HTML generated doesn't contain malicious script, like this: <img onload="alert('haha');" src="http://www.google.com/intl/en_ALL/images/srpr/logo1w.png" /> This doesn't affect the WMD client's preview box. I doubt this is a big deal since if you're scrubbing the HTML on the server, an attacker can't save the bad HTML so no one else will be able to see it later and have their cookies stolen or sessions hijacked by the bad script. But it's still kinda odd to allow an attacker to run any script in the context of your site, and it's probably a bad idea to allow the client preview window to allow different HTML than your server will allow. StackOverflow has clearly plugged this hole. How did they do it? [NOTE: I already figured this out but it required some tricky javascript debugging, so I'm answering my own question here to help others who may want to do ths same thing]

• C# Event Handlers automatically created by WinForms Designer

  Just moved from VB.NET to C#. In VB to connect and Event Handler to a Sub we use the Handles clause. From what it seems, this do not exist in C#. After creating a simple application with a button I realize that Window Forms Designer automatically created an EventHandler to my button1_Click function (after I double clicked it), in Form1.Designer.cs with this code: this.button1.Click += new System.EventHandler(this.button1_Click); But, in VB, the WinForms Designer create the Handles clause in my class, in the function header. So, C# create the default EventHandler in designer file, while VB creates in main class with control resides. Is this correct? Am I missing something here?

• How to catch exceptions from another program (for logging)?

  I am working on a tool that monitors a number of applications and ensures they are always running and in a clean state. Some of these applications have unhandled exceptions which do occur periodically and present the 'send crash report' window. I do not have the source code to these applications. Is there any mechanism I could use to catch the exceptions, or simply identify their exception type, as well as identify the application's main executable file that threw the exception. I'm not trying to do anything crazy like catch and handle it on the applications behalf, I'm simply trying to capture the exception type, log it and then restart the application.

• Synergy - easy share of keyboard and mouse between multiple computers

  Did you ever have the urge to share one set of keyboard and mouse between multiple machines? If so, please read on... Using multiple machines Honestly, as a software craftsman it is my daily business to run multiple machines - either physical or virtual - to be able to solve my customers' requirements. Recent hardware equipment allows this very easily. For laptops it's a no-brainer to attach a second or even a third screen in order to extend your native display. This works quite handy and in my case I used to attached two additional screens - one via HD15 connector, the other via HDMI. But... as it's a laptop and therefore a mobile unit there are slight restrictions. Detaching and re-attaching all cables when changing locations is one of them but hardware limitations, too. After all, it's a laptop and not a workstation. I guess, that anyone working in IT (or ICT) has more than one machine at their workplace or their home office and at least I find it quite annoying to have multiple sets of keyboard and mouse conquering my remaining space on my desk. Despite the ugly looks of all those cables and whatsoever 'chaos of distraction' I prefer a more clean solution and working environment. This allows me to actually focus on my work and tasks to do rather than to worry about choosing the right combination of keyboard/mouse. My current workplace is a patch work of various pieces of hardware (approx. 2-3 years): DIY desktop on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Core2 Duo (E7400, 2.8GHz), 4GB RAM, 2x 250GB HDD, nVidia GPU 512MB Dell Inspiron 1525 on Windows 8 64-bit, 4GB RAM, 200GB HDD HP Compaq 6720s on Windows Vista 32-bit, Core2 Duo (T5670, 1.8GHz), 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD Mac mini on Mac OS X 10.7, Core i5 (2.3 GHz), 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD I know... Not the latest and greatest but a decent combination to work with. New system(s) is/are already on the shopping list but I live in the 'wrong' country to buy computer hardware. So, the next trip abroad will provide me with some new stuff. Using multiple operating systems The list of hardware above already names different operating systems, and actually I have only one preference: Linux. But still my job as a software craftsman for Visual FoxPro and .NET development requires other OSes, too. Not a big deal, it's just like this. Additionally to those physical machines, there are a bunch of virtual machines around. Most of them running either Windows XP or Windows 7. Since years I have the practice that each development for one customer is isolated into its own virtual machine and environment. This keeps it clean and version-safe. But as you can easily imagine with that setup there are a couple of constraints referring to keyboard and mouse. Usually, those systems require their own pieces of hardware attached. As stated, I don't like clutter on my desk's surface, so a cross-platform solution has to come in here. In the past, I tried it with various applications, hardware or network protocols like X11, RDP, NX, TeamViewer, RAdmin, KVM switch, etc. but the problem in this case is that they either allow you to remotely connect to the other system or exclusively 'bind' your peripherals to the active system. Not optimal after all. Synergy to the rescue Quote from their website: "Synergy lets you easily share your mouse and keyboard between multiple computers on your desk, and it's Free and Open Source. Just move your mouse off the edge of one computer's screen on to another. You can even share all of your clipboards. All you need is a network connection. Synergy is cross-platform (works on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux)." Yep, that's it! All I need for my setup here... Actually, I couldn't believe it myself that I didn't stumble over synergy earlier but 'Get over it' and there we go. And despite the fact that it is Open Source, no, it's also for free. Donations for the developers are very welcome and recently they introduced Synergy Premium. A possibility to buy so-called premium votes that can be used to put more weight / importance on specific issues or bugs that you would like the developers to look into. Installation and configuration Simply download the installation packages for your systems of choice, run the installer and enter some minor information about your network setup. I chose my desktop machine for the role of the Synergy server and configured my screen setup as follows: The screen setup allows you currently to build or connect up to 15 machines. The number of screens can be higher as those machine might have multiple screens physically attached. Synergy takes this into the overall calculations and simply works as expected. I tried it for fun with a second monitor each connected to both laptops to have a total number of 6 active screens. No flaws after all - stunning! All the other machines are configured as clients like so: Side note: The screenshot was taken on Windows 8 and pasted via clipboard into Gimp running on Ubuntu. Resume Synergy is now definitely in my box of tools for my daily work, and amongst the first pieces of software I install after the operating system. It just simplifies my life and cleans my desk. Never again without Synergy!Now, only waiting for an Android version to integrate my Galaxy Tab 10.1, too. ;-) Please, check out that superb product and enjoy sharing one keyboard, one mouse and one clipboard between your various machines and operating systems.

• Get CruiseControl to talk to github with the correct public key.

  Hi All, Has anybody installed git and ControlControl and got CruiseControl to pull from GitHub on a window 2003 server. I keep getting public key errors (access denied) - Which is good i suppose as that confirms git is talking to github. However what is not good is that I dont not know where to install the rsa keys so they will be picked up by the running process (git in the context of cc.net). Any help would save me a lot of hair! I have tried installing the keys into; c:\Program Files\Git.ssh Whereby running git bash and cd ~ take me to: c:\Program Files\Git Current error from CC.net is Error Message: ThoughtWorks.CruiseControl.Core.CruiseControlException: Source control operation failed: Permission denied (publickey). fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly . Process command: C:\Program Files\Git\bin\git.exe fetch origin Thanks in advance

• Windows Phone 8 Announcement

  As if the Surface announcement on Monday wasn’t exciting enough, today Microsoft announce that Windows Phone 8 will be coming this fall.  That itself is great news, but the features coming were like confetti flying in all different directions.  Given this speed I couldn’t capture every feature they covered.  A summary of what I did capture is listed below starting with their eight main features. Common Core The first thing that they covered is that Windows Phone 8 will share a core OS with Windows 8.  It will also run natively on multiple cores.  They mentioned that they have run it on up to 64 cores to this point.  The phones as you might expect will at least start as dual core.  If you remember there were metrics saying that Windows Phone 7 performed operations faster on a single core than other platforms did with dual cores.  The metrics they showed here indicate that Windows Phone 8 runs faster on comparable dual core hardware than other platforms. New Screen Resolutions Screen resolution has never been an issue for me, but it has been a criticism of Windows Phone 7 in the media.  Windows Phone 8 will supports three screen resolutions: WVGA 800 x 480, WXGA 1280 x 768, and 720 1280x720.  Hopefully this makes pixel counters a little happier. MicroSD Support This was one of my pet peeves when I got my Samsung Focus. With Windows Phone 8 the operating system will support adding MicroSD cards after initial setup.  Of course this is dependent on the hardware company on implementing it, but I think we have seen that even feature phone manufacturers have not had a problem supporting this in the past. NFC NFC has been an anticipated feature for some time.  What Microsoft showed today included the fact that they didn’t just want it to be for the phone.  There is cross platform NFC functionality between Windows Phone 8 and Windows 8.  The demos , while possibly a bit fanciful, showed would could be achieved even in a retail environment.  We are getting closer and closer to a Minority Report world with these technologies. Wallet Windows Phone 8 isn’t the first platform to have a wallet concept.  What they have done to differentiate themselves is to make it sot that it is not dependent on a SIM type chip like other platforms.  They have also expanded the concept beyond just banks to other types of credits such as airline miles. Nokia Mapping People have been envious of the Lumia phones having the Nokia mapping software.  Now all Windows Phone 8 devices will use NavTeq data and will have the capability to run in an offline fashion.  This is a major step forward from the Bing “touch for the next turn” maps. IT Administration The lack of features for enterprise administration and deployment was a complaint even before the Windows Phone 7 was released.  With the Windows Phone 8 release such features as Bitlocker and Secure boot will be baked into the OS. We will also have the ability to privately sign and distribute applications. Changing Start Screen Joe Belfiore made a big deal about this aspect of the new release.  Users will have more color themes available to them and the live tiles will be highly customizable. You will have the ability to resize and organize the tiles in a more dynamic way.  This allows for less important tiles or ones with less information to be made smaller.  And There Is More So what other tidbits came out of the presentation?  Later this summer the API for WP8 will be available.  There will be developer events coming to a city near you.  Another announcement of interest to developers is the ability to write applications at a native code level.  This is a boon for game developers and those who need highly efficient applications. As a topper on the cake there was mention of in app payment. On the consumer side we also found out that all updates will be available over the air.  Along with this came the fact that Microsoft will support all devices with updates for at least 18 month and you will be able to subscribe for early updates.  Update coming for Windows Phone 7.5 customers to WP7.8.  The main enhancement will be the new live tile features.  The big bonus is that the update will bypass the carriers.  I would assume though that you will be brought up to date with all previous patches that your carrier may not have released. • Python Desktop Application with the Browser as an interface?

  I want to create an application that runs on the users computer, a stand-alone application, with installation and what-not, but I want the interface to be a browser, either internal and displayed as an OS window or external accessible using the browser (i.e. some http server). The reason would be because I know a little about Python, but I think I can manage as long as I have some basic roots that I can use and manipulate, and those would be HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I've yet to find a good GUI tool which I can use, and always abandon the idea after trying to mess around and eventually not getting anything.

• Java desktop app: How to maximize tray application when hotkey pressed?

  I need to write a program that, when minimized, lives in the System Tray, and I'll use Java 6's SystemTray API to do that. How can I make that application comes to the foreground when the user presses some hotkey? For example, the app is running but minimized. When the user presses CTRL-SHIFT-Y or something (or, like Google Desktop's search, CTRL twice) and the application is maximized. EDIT: I know about how to bring a Java window to the foreground. I'm asking more specifically about how to make a running Java app listen for a hotkey.

That is, it returns function() { return parseInt(this.gup('page')); } I was expecting a numeric value and not any code at all.

  I am using an AXObserver to monitor when a window is closed. In the callback, I am just raising an NSNotification. All working well. What is the correct syntax for attaching some user data as refcon? The working call looks like this: err6 = AXObserverAddNotification(observerTable, tableRef, kAXUIElementDestroyedNotification, nil); and the callback specified when I create the observer has the signature: static void cbTableClosed (AXObserverRef observer, AXUIElementRef element, CFStringRef notification, void *refcon) I want to replace refcon with an object of my own, but don't know how to change either line. The obvious objective-c type changes through up warnings.

• University teaches DOS-style C++, how to deal with it

  Half a year ago I had a look at available programming educations. I chose this one because unlike most of the choices: The majority of the courses seemed to be about something concrete and useful; the languages used are C++ and Java which are platform-independent; later courses include developing for mobile devices and a course on Android development, which seemed modern and relevant. Now after two introductory courses we're just starting with C++, and my programming professor seems a bit weird. He's tested us on things like "why should you use constants" and "why are globals bad" in a kind of mechanical way, without much context, before teaching actual programming. His handouts use system("pause"), system("cls"), and getch() from some conio.h that seems ancient according to what I've read. I just did a task that was about printing the "ASCII letters from 32 to 255" (huh?), with an example picture showing a table with Windows' Extended ASCII - of course I got other results for 128-255 on my Arch Linux that uses Unicode, and this isn't mentioned at all. I don't know, it just doesn't seem right... As if he is teaching programming because he has to, perhaps? Should I bring such things up? Hmm. I was looking forward to learning from someone who really knows stuff, and in an academic, rigorous way, like SICP or something. Aren't professors in programming supposed to be like that? I studied math for a while and every teacher and assistant there were really precise about what they said, but this is my second programming teacher that is sort of disappointing. Oh well. Now, question: Is this what to expect from universities or Not OK, and how do I deal with it? I have never touched the language C++ (or C) until now, and am not the right person to jump up and say "This is So Wrong!", so if I google something and find 10 people who say "xxx is blasphemy", how do I skillfully communicate this? I do think it would be better for those classmates who are total beginners not to learn bad habits (such as these vibes of total ignorance of other platforms!) during the upcoming courses, but don't want to disrespect the teacher. I don't know if it's reasonable or just cocky to bring up things like "what about other platforms?" or "but what about this article or stackoverflow answer that I read that said..." for every assignment? Or, if he keeps ignoring non-Windows-programming, should I give up and focus on my own projects or somehow argue that this really isn't OK nowadays? Are there any programming teachers out there, what do you think? By the way these are web-based courses, all interaction between teachers and students takes place in a forum. EDIT: A few answers seem to be making some incorrect assumptions, so maybe I should add a few things. I have been doing programming for fun on and off for 10 years, am pretty comfortable in 3 languages and read programming blogs et c regularly. Also, I feel kind of done being a student, having a degree in another field. I just need another, relevant diploma to work as a programmer, so I'm going back for that. Studying computer science for 5 years is not for me anymore, even though I enjoy learning and solving problems in my free time. Second, let me highlight that I don't expect it to be like the industry at all, quite the contrary. I expect it to be academic, dry and unnecessarily correct. No, it's not just math. Every professor I have had in math, or Japanese (major) or Chinese (minor) have been very very academic, discussing subtle points for hours with passion. But the courses I'm taking now and a previous one in programming don't seem serious. They neither resemble industry NOR academia. That is the problem. And it's not because I can't learn programming anyway. Third, I don't necessarily want to learn C++ or Android development, and I know I could teach myself those and anything else if I wanted to. But I am going back to school anyway, and those platform-independent languages and mobile stuff made me think that maybe they're serious about teaching something relevant here. Seems like I got this wrong, but we'll see.

Everything works fine except the fact that I have no idea how to set an expiration-time for the cookie? $.cookie('opt_visible', 'true'); the jquery-cookie documentation says: hoursToLive (DEPRECATED for expiresAt) NUMBER For how many hours should the cookie be valid? (Passing 0 means to delete the cookie at the end of the browser session--this is default. Negative values will delete the cookie, but you should use the del() method instead.) That's exactly what I'd like to have. The cookie should be available as long as i'm browsing the site. As soon as i close the window or browsertab, the cookie should be deleted. How can i implement this hoursToLive thingy to my mentioned line above? Thank you

Is this just a difference in versions of Interface Builder? Where did it go?

• Android 2.2: Screen brightness/timeout question

  Im using the following code to adjust the brightness of the screen: public void SetBright(float value) { Window mywindow = getWindow(); WindowManager.LayoutParams lp = mywindow.getAttributes(); lp.screenBrightness = value; mywindow.setAttributes(lp); } But i want the brightness to be 0% for a specific time. But when i use SetBright(0.0f), i cant change it back. I made a timer that runs for a minute with 0% brightness, then turns it back to 100%. Works when i use 10% for example. But when i turn it to 0% i cant seem to wake it up again. Any ideas how to solve this?

• How to prevent autoplay and run my own app when inserting an USB-Flash drive

  when inserting an USB-Flash drive, Windows normally opens the Autoplay dialog that offers to browse the drive or if there are multimedia files it offers to choose an app to open them. We developed a media player that is connected to the USB-Drive and registers itself as Mass Storage Device. What I need is, that when inserting the Player that this Dialog is not shown, but instead my own application is launched. Ideally the application would be on the Flash Drive itself, but as I understood is that Autorun is disabled for USB-Drives. It would be enough if a preinstalled application is launched. I already tried to catch the WM_DRIVE_CHANGE message, but this only works if my application is the top most window, otherwise the Autoplay Dialog is displayed. Best Tom

This only happens in firefox (and maybe other browsers) but the code works fine in IE8. I have codes like this in jquery: $("#Logout").live("click", function (e) { e.preventDefault(e); $.post("/logout.php", {}, function () { //--a bunch of animations--// window.location = "/login.php"; } }); I have no idea whats wrong as even the error message is not helpful at all.. inside logout.php: <?php session_start(); session_destroy(); ?> Also dont work if I used GET or inserted phantom data. Or is there a more elegant way to do this?

• Connect to an existing process

  Hole thing is happening on the mac os x. Let's assume that I've opened an program by clicking on an .app icon. It's a python program with GUI which has a separate process that waits for a user input. But as I've opened it by clickin .app icon I dont have access to it's input as I would have if I opened it in Terminal. And the question is: How can I connect new Terminal window to this running program? I tried pipes but I'm not sure how to use them correctly. My guess was to find PID of the app that is running and then pipe to this program by giving a PID. But I have no idea how to do it. I hope you were able to understand what's the problem. Sorry for my weak english :)

Public Property Let DataControl_Value(ByVal Value As Variant) Public Property Get DataControl_Value() As Variant This property is editable at design time if i use it VB6.0 Applications. Same thing is read only in case if i use it in vc++ MFC applications. I have defined one more property like below. Public Property Let DataControl_DataItemDef(ByVal Value As DTMDATACONTROLLib.IXMLDOMNode) Public Property Get DataControl_DataItemDef() As DTMDATACONTROLLib.IXMLDOMNode In this case the "DataControl_DataItemDef" property will not be available at design time.[not displaying in control's property window.] Kindly help me to resolve the issue.
