• Failed to unmount partitions

  I'm trying to install ubuntu from a pen drive. I have windows 7 installed already and want to keep that installation. I have a 3TB drive that has one 2TB partition on it, so the last 1TB is completely unused, which is where I want to install ubuntu. I started ubuntu in "try ubuntu" mode and then opened gparted, and then deleted the unused partition for the last third of my drive, then tried to install ubuntu. During the install, it asked me if I wanted to unmount the drives I already have The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda, /dev/sdb Do you want the installer to try to unmount the partitions on these disks before continuing? If you leave them mounted, you will not be able to create, delete, or resize partitions on these disks, but you may be able to install to existing partitions there. No, Yes I said no because I don't want to lose my windows 7 installation, nor any of that data. I wonder, if I had said yes above, would I have lost all the data on those drives? Anyways, I hit no and continued. I chose to install ubuntu alongside windows 7, and hit continue. A few minutes passed when this popup appeared: Failed to unmount partitions The installer needs to commit changes to partition tables, but cannot do so because the partitions on the following mount points could not be unmounted: /media/ubuntu/Three\ Terabyte Drive Terabyte\ DriveDrive Please close any applications using these mount points. Would you like the installer to try to unmount these partitions again? Go Back, Continue Why is this not working? What am I supposed to do? ========== Update: I went ahead and said yes, it can unmount those partitions. It finished installing Ubuntu, but now when i start my machine it just takes me to the grub rescue prompt. Seems like it broke something. • Faster Memory Allocation Using vmtasks

  You may have noticed a new system process called "vmtasks" on Solaris 11 systems: % pgrep vmtasks 8 % prstat -p 8 PID USERNAME SIZE RSS STATE PRI NICE TIME CPU PROCESS/NLWP 8 root 0K 0K sleep 99 -20 9:10:59 0.0% vmtasks/32 What is vmtasks, and why should you care? In a nutshell, vmtasks accelerates creation, locking, and destruction of pages in shared memory segments. This is particularly helpful for locked memory, as creating a page of physical memory is much more expensive than creating a page of virtual memory. For example, an ISM segment (shmflag & SHM_SHARE_MMU) is locked in memory on the first shmat() call, and a DISM segment (shmflg & SHM_PAGEABLE) is locked using mlock() or memcntl(). Segment operations such as creation and locking are typically single threaded, performed by the thread making the system call. In many applications, the size of a shared memory segment is a large fraction of total physical memory, and the single-threaded initialization is a scalability bottleneck which increases application startup time. To break the bottleneck, we apply parallel processing, harnessing the power of the additional CPUs that are always present on modern platforms. For sufficiently large segments, as many of 16 threads of vmtasks are employed to assist an application thread during creation, locking, and destruction operations. The segment is implicitly divided at page boundaries, and each thread is given a chunk of pages to process. The per-page processing time can vary, so for dynamic load balancing, the number of chunks is greater than the number of threads, and threads grab chunks dynamically as they finish their work. Because the threads modify a single application address space in compressed time interval, contention on locks protecting VM data structures locks was a problem, and we had to re-scale a number of VM locks to get good parallel efficiency. The vmtasks process has 1 thread per CPU and may accelerate multiple segment operations simultaneously, but each operation gets at most 16 helper threads to avoid monopolizing CPU resources. We may reconsider this limit in the future. Acceleration using vmtasks is enabled out of the box, with no tuning required, and works for all Solaris platform architectures (SPARC sun4u, SPARC sun4v, x86). Creating the segment would take 6 minutes with the old code, and only 33 seconds with the new. If this is your Oracle SGA, you save over 5 minutes when starting the database, and you also save when shutting it down prior to a restart. Those minutes go directly to your bottom line for service availability.

• Direct3D - Zooming into Mouse Position

  I'm trying to implement my camera class for a simulation. But I cant figure out how to zoom into my world based on the mouse position. I mean the object under the mouse cursor should remain at the same screen position. • Windows 7 is stuck at "Starting Windows" when I attempt to boot computer

  Basically, whenever I turn on my computer, it gets to the Starting Windows phase and just stays there. The startup animation still plays, yet it gets nowhere. I have tried booting into safe mode, however it gets stuck at loading CLASSPNP.SYS. It then freezes there and doesn't continue booting. I have tried booting into recovery mode from the hard drive, and it freezes after displaying the background image. I have tried booting from a recovery CD, which works, and I was able to use system restore. However, using system restore did not fix it, and it still is stuck at the Starting Windows screen. I have tried booting a Windows CD (Windows 8 Retail Installer) to see if I could upgrade it to fix this issue, however that froze at a blank screen after it got past the boot logo. I have tried changing around the BIOS settings (including resetting), to no avail. I have tried re-plugging the internal PSU cables (this is a custom-built desktop), yet this has changed nothing. I can boot into a loopback Ubuntu install on the same drive, which works fine, other than the fact that it has issues with some of the USB ports and the network card. This system has worked fine for the past few months, completely stable, and nothing in the configuration has changed before this error started happening. Startup Repair on the Windows recovery CD doesn't find any issues. Unplugging my secondary hard drive or swapping around memory doesn't change anything. The hard drive itself is fine, it hasn't shown any signs of failure and once again, boots my other OS fine. If anyone could help with this, that would be great. I can't seem to find any possible solution to this. If it makes any difference, my system specs are as follows: AMD FX-8320 Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 4GB of DDR3 Radeon HD 6870 550w PSU I'd like to not have to reinstall Windows, for I have more than a terabyte of data that I would have to back up if that becomes the only option. EDIT: I have since tried the following: Tried the solution involving restoring files from RegBackup, which changed nothing. Tried testing everything with Hiren's boot CD, everything comes back as fine. Tried disabling everything unnecessary in the BIOS and unplugging everything unneeded, it still hangs. Tried swapping out every possible combination of RAM, it still has the same result. The RAM is not at fault it seems Tried every GPU I own (which is many!) and it still hangs at the exact same place. Tried minimizing the power consumption as much as possible, even using an old PCI graphics card. It still hangs at the same place in the same way, signifying that it's not the PSU at fault. Tried resetting the BIOS again, still nothing. Tried every possible combination of BIOS options, even downclocking everything, it still hangs in the same spot. Tried upgrading the BIOS from version FB to FD, which changed nothing. Based on this, I would conclude the motherboard to be at fault. Are there any other possibilities? I don't want to spend $150 for a new motherboard. EDIT 2: This is what it gets stuck at when I try to boot into safe mode: Note the slight graphical corruption at the top of the screen. No matter how I set up the system, this seems to be there. In addition, either it has stopped booting into safe mode now, or it takes upwards of 2+ hours, and I haven't left it running for that long.

• CSS hover behavior inconsistent on desktop/mobile devices [migrated]

  I have a strange problem: This page looks good on desktop browsers, but the hovering effect does not seem to work correctly on at least my CM7 Android 2.3.7 device. I know hovering is not supposed to work on touch displays as it does with a mouse, but I'd like to have touch feedback, i.e. the highlight color should show once the user has tapped a menu item. This does work when the link is just a href="#" but it does not when it is a real link. I tried all sorts of stuff as you can see, to no avail. If you go back in the browser history after having tapped a real link, the item is highlighted, so the browser understands the CSS I am throwing at it. However, the javascript alert makes it clear that it only seems to interpret the link opening action and does not care about the color changing stuff. Weird that is. • When should I use a Process Model versus a Use Case?

  This Blog entry is a follow on to https://blogs.oracle.com/oum/entry/oum_is_business_process_and and addresses a question I sometimes get asked…..i.e. “when I am gathering requirements on a Project, should I use a Process Modeling approach, or should I use a Use Case approach?” Not surprisingly, the short answer is “it depends”! Let’s take a scenario where you are working on a Sales Force Automation project. We’ll call the process that is being implemented “Lead-to-Order”. I would typically think of this type of project as being “Process Centric”. In other words, the focus will be on orchestrating a series of human and system related tasks that ultimately deliver value to the business in a cost effective way. Put in even simpler terms……implement an automated pre-sales system. For this type of (Process Centric) project, requirements would typically be gathered through a series of Workshops where the focal point will be on creating, or confirming, the Future-State (To-Be) business process. If pre-defined “best-practice” business process models exist, then of course they could and should be used during the Workshops, but even in their absence, the focus of the Workshops will be to define the optimum series of Tasks, their connections, sequence, and dependencies that will ultimately reflect a business process that meets the needs of the business. Now let’s take another scenario. Assume you are working on a Content Management project that involves automating the creation and management of content for User Manuals, Web Sites, Social Media publications etc. Would you call this type of project “Process Centric”?.......well you could, but it might also fall into the category of complex configuration, plus some custom extensions to a standard software application (COTS). For this type of project it would certainly be worth considering using a Use Case approach in order to 1) understand the requirements, and 2) to capture the functional requirements of the custom extensions. At this point you might be asking “why couldn’t I use a Process Modeling approach for my Content Management project?” Well, of course you could, but you just need to think about which approach is the most effective. Start by analyzing the types of Tasks that will eventually be automated by the system, for example: Best Suited To? Task Name Process Model Use Case Notes Manage outbound calls Ö A series of linked human and system tasks for calling and following up with prospects Manage content revision Ö Updating the content on a website Update User Preferences Ö Updating a users display preferences Assign Lead Ö Reviewing a lead, then assigning it to a sales person Convert Lead to Quote Ö Updating the status of a lead, and then converting it to a sales order As you can see, it’s not an exact science, and either approach is viable for the Tasks listed above. However, where you have a series of interconnected Tasks or Activities, than when combined, deliver value to the business, then that would be a good indicator to lead with a Process Modeling approach. On the other hand, when the Tasks or Activities in question are more isolated and/or do not cross traditional departmental boundaries, then a Use Case approach might be worth considering. Now let’s take one final scenario….. As you captured the To-Be Process flows for the Sales Force automation project, you discover a “Gap” in terms of what the client requires, and what the standard COTS application can provide. Let’s assume that the only way forward is to develop a Custom Extension. This would now be a perfect opportunity to document the functional requirements (behind the Gap) using a Use Case approach. After all, we will be developing some new software, and one of the most effective ways to begin the Software Development Lifecycle is to follow a Use Case approach. • Two Values Enter, One Value Leaves

  This is a fairly easy way to compare values for two different controls. In this example a user needs to enter in a street address and zip code OR pick a county. After that the application will display location(s) based on the value. The application only wants a specific street/zip combination or a county, not both. The source code below compiles fine; it even runs and displays the contents of the InfoWork datatable in the wpf datagrid. Hooray! But the WPF page with the datagrid will not display in the designer. I get an incomprehensible error instead on my design page which is shown at the end of this posting.   I just can't figure out this memory leak that EurekaLog is reporting for my program. I'm using Delphi 2009. Here it is: Memory Leak: Type=Data; Total size=26; Count=1; The stack is: System.pas _UStrSetLength 17477 System.pas _UStrCat 17572 Process.pas InputGedcomFile 1145 That is all there is in the stack. EurekaLog is pointing me to the location where the memory that was not released was first allocated. According to it, the line in my program is line 1145 of InputGedcomFile. That line is: CurStruct0Key := 'HEAD' + Level0Key; where CurStruct0Key and Level0Key are simply defined in the procedure as local variables that should be dynamically handled by the Delphi memory manager when entering and leaving the procedure: var CurStruct0Key, Level0Key: string; So now I look at the _UStrCat procedure in the System Unit.   I have a MemoryStream of 10K which was created from a bitmap of 2MB and compressed using JPEG. Since MemoryStream can’t directly be placed in System.Windows.Controls.Image for the GUI, I am using the following intermediate code to convert this back to BitmapImage and eventually System.Windows.Controls.Image. System.Windows.Controls.Image image = new System.Windows.Controls.Image(); BitmapImage imageSource = new BitmapImage(); s.SlideInformation.Thumbnail.Seek(0, SeekOrigin.Begin); imageSource.BeginInit(); imageSource.CacheOption = BitmapCacheOption.OnDemand; imageSource.CreateOptions = BitmapCreateOptions.DelayCreation; imageSource.StreamSource = s.SlideInformation.Thumbnail; imageSource.EndInit(); imageSource.Freeze(); image.Source = imageSource; ret = image.Source; My question is, when I store this in BitmapImage, the memory allocation is taking around 2MB. Is this expected? Is there any way to reduce the memory? I have around 300 thumbnails and this converstion takes around 600MB, which is very high. Appreciate your help!

  I'm playing around with WCF Data Services (ADO.NET Data Services). I have an entity framework model pointed at the AdventureWorks database. When I debug my svc file from within Visual Studio, it works great. I can say /awservice.svc/Customers and get back the ATOM feed I expect. If I publish the service (hosted in an ASP.NET web application) to IIS7, the same query string returns a 500 fault. The root svc page itself works as expected and successfully returns ATOM. The /Customers path fails.   I am trying to get to grips with MS Dynamics CRM 2011. I have have the beta installed on a VM and things look pretty good - some great new features etc. However I am getting an exception when trying to connect to the new XRMServices (updated 2011 WCF web services) Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/organame/XRMServices/2011/Organization.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation. The exception message is: 'System.ServiceModel.Description.UseRequestHeadersForMetadataAddressBehavior'. This collection only supports one instance of each type. Parameter name: item. ---> System.ArgumentException: The value could not be added to the collection, as the collection already contains an item of the same type: 'System.ServiceModel.Description.UseRequestHeadersForMetadataAddressBehavior'. • NserviceBus throws exception when referencing a Nettiers assembly

  We use nettiers as a our data layer, and we recently have started looking at using NServiceBus, but we have hit a wall. • F# Powerpack's Metadata doesn't recognize FSharp.Core as an F# library

Instead, all 3 throw an exception that FSharp.Core is not an F# assembly (details below, re-formatted for readability). Two more clues: Using the core3 method, I get the same error for the test F# assembly itself I don't get the error at FSI after doing #r "@C:\Program Files...\FSharp.Powerpack.Metadata.dll". Any ideas? I'm using Visual Studio 2008, F# 2.0 and F# Powerpack 2.0.0.0 (May 20, 2010) release on an oldish XP VM, I think it's updated to SP3 though. (I got the error this morning with Powerpack 1.9.9.9, so I upgraded to 2.0.0.0. I thought that if 1.9.9.9 doesn't recognise F#'s 2.0.0.0's assemblies, then maybe bugfixes in Powerpack 2.0.0.0 would help.) • Instantiate an .aspx that is an embedded resource of an assembly

  I have an ASP.NET (MVC) application in which I would like to load WebForms .aspx files that are embedded as resources in 3rd party assemblies. The reason I want to do this is to make a sort of "plug-in" system where a .dll file can be dropped in a folder and then picked up at runtime to provide additional functionality to the base application. I've gotten the plugin system to work (I'm using MEF) with plugins written in ASP.NET MVC (Views and Controllers), but for plain old ASP.NET (Pages), I've got myself into a bit of a problem. For the execution of the embedded .aspx file (which, in the usual WebForm way Inherits="My.BasePage") I've created a custom VirtualPathProvider, ResourceFile ControllerFactory and PageController. Within the PageController I've overridden the Execute(RequestContext) method and within it I'm trying to compile the .aspx with BuildManager.CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath(virtualPath, type). When doing this, I get the error message "Could not load type 'My.BasePage'", even though I'm giving the BuildManager the System.Type of My.BasePage in the call to CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath. I seem to be stuck at this point. I've tried to Server.Transfer() to the custom VirtualPathProvider handled URL to the same .aspx file, but that fails with the same error message. How can I help BuildManager find out where My.BasePage is defined and how come the Type requiredBaseType parameter of CreateInstanceFromVirtualPath seems to be ignored? I've tried to call BuildManager.AddReferencedAssembly(), but that only fails with "This method can only be called during the application's pre-start initialization stage". MSDN says: "The method must be called during the Application_PreStartInit stage of the application", but I have no such event in my HttpApplication object and find absolutely zero information about it on the internet. Either way, I don't want to be calling BuildManager.AddReferencedAssembly() in or before the Application_Start event, since that makes me have to recycle the whole application to be able to add new plugins to the system. Does anyone have any clues? Any other ideas on how I can "execute" an .aspx file that is embedded as a resource within an assembly through reflection? Can I for instance pre-compile the .aspx file within the same assembly as the base Page class it inherits?

• Read multiple tables from dataset in Powershell

I am passing several Select statements, so the dataset contains multiple tables. I replaced $DataSet.Tables[0] with for ($i=0;$i -lt $DataSet.tables.count;$i++){ $Dataset.Tables[$i] } but the console only shows the content of the first table and blank lines for each records of what should be the second table. The only way to see the result is to change the code to $Dataset.Tables[$i] | out-string but I do not want strings, I want to have table objects to work with. When I assign what is returned by the Invoke-SQLCommand to a variable, I can see that I have an array of datarow objects but only from the first table. What happened to the second table? • LINQ to Entities exceptions (ElementAtOrDefault and CompareObjectEqual)

  I am working on a shipping platform which will eventually automate shipping through several major carriers. I have a ShipmentsView Usercontrol which displayes a list of Shipments (returned by EntityFramework), and when a user clicks on a shipment item, it spawns a ShipmentEditView and passes the ShipmentID (RecordKey) to that view. I initially wrestled with trying to get the context from the parent (ShipmentsView) and finally gave up resolving to get to it later. I wanted to do this to keep a single instance of the context. anyhow, I now create a new instance of the context in my ShipmentEditViewModel, and query against it for the Shipment record. I know I could just pass the record, but I wanted to use the Ocean Framework that Karl Shifflett wrote and don't want to muck about writing new transition methods. So anyhow, I query and when stepping through, I can see that it returns a record, as soon as execution reached the point where it assigned the query result to the e.Result property, it throws up the following exception depending on the query I used.
