• VS2008 is very slow on a specific large C++ solution

  I have a solution with 21 C++ projects and 1 VB.NET project. The IDE responds very slowly when I simply move the carret in a file or try to open the menu. The process seems to take 50% of CPU for each movement. It only happens with this solution and only on my machine. The solution has total of 2380 source and header files, of which 1280 are header files. I tried to remove all connection to the source control (Perforce) but it didn't help. Also, I have Visual Assist installed but even after removing it (uninstall), the same behavior continued. Any idea?

• MessageBox not shown when opened processing WM_CLOSE from taskbar thumbnail close button

  Trying to put up a "Do you want to save"-dialog when trying to close window with close-button in taskbar thumbnail in windows 7(with aero peek active). Using MessageBox() when processing WM_CLOSE does not work. MessageBox won't show until you move mouse cursor outside thumbnail so aero peek is disabled. Lots of applications have this buggy behaviour so it's probably a design flaw in Windows 7, but for some programs it works (Word, Notepad, Visual Studio, ...), so I'm wondering what trick they are using(or what it takes to "exit" aero peek-mode programmatically). The small "Sound Recorder" application that comes with Windows 7 has the same problem (if you have recorded something without saving and try to close it using thumbnail close-button)...

• Can I set JFrame's normal size while it is maximized?

  I'd like to set the normal size of a visible JFrame while it is in Frame.MAXIMIZED_BOTH state (by normal size i mean the size of frame when it is in Frame.NORMAL state) . The reason I want to do this is so that when the user un-maximizes the frame, it will have the proper size I want it to be. But if I do so, the window will switch to normal state. If I set the size first, then switch to MAXIMIZED_BOTH state, then I will see a disturbing blink or resize (which I don't want to). I've also tried setting the size first, then changing state to MAXIMIZED_BOTH, and then making it visible, but the state change is deferred if the window is not visible (and will only be executed once it is made visible, also resulting in a visual resize). So what can I do if I want my frame to have a predefined normal size, but I want it to appear maximized?

• C: Why does gcc allow char array initialization with string literal larger than array?

  int main() { char a[7] = "Network"; return 0; } A string literal in C is terminated internally with a nul character. So, the above code should give a compilation error since the actual length of the string literal Network is 8 and it cannot fit in a char[7] array. However, gcc (even with -Wall) on Ubuntu compiles this code without any error or warning. Why does gcc allow this and not flag it as compilation error? gcc only gives a warning (still no error!) when the char array size is smaller than the string literal. For example, it warns on: char a[6] = "Network"; [Related] Visual C++ 2012 gives a compilation error for char a[7]: 1>d:\main.cpp(3): error C2117: 'a' : array bounds overflow 1> d:\main.cpp(3) : see declaration of 'a'

  Have anyone ever create/manipulate a table application from the ground up/scratch? I want to create a table using flash AS 3. I like to have the features like to the MS Studio Web Developer option. The options are create a table, merge cells, split cell, resize columns, delete cell, delete row, delete column etc... I think this is going to be very complicated thing to do. I think the only way to do it is to build it from the ground up because I don’t think Flash has the library/component for it. I was able to create rows and columns by creating the # of rectangles listed it from the left to the right and move the next coordinate for the next row. Now the most challenging this is to manipulate it. This is the must have feature on my website and we don’t want use Javascript to create table on the server side to create the table.

• Create set of random JPGs

  Here's the scenario, I want to create a set of random, small jpg's - anywhere between 50 bytes and 8k in size - the actual visual content of the jpeg is irrelevant as long as they're valid. I need to generate a thousand or so, and they all have to be unique - even if they're only different by a single pixel. Can I just write a jpeg header/footer and some random bytes in there? I'm not able to use existing photos or sets of photos from the web. The second issue is that the set of images has to be different for each run of the program. I'd prefer to do this in python, as the wrapping scripts are in Python. I've looked for python code to generate jpg's from scratch, and didn't find anything, so pointers to libraries are just as good.

  What is the best way to access components (e.g. imagelist, timer) from a form instance? I am working on multi form windows forms application on .NET Compact Framework version 3.5 SP1 with C#. I have a Controller class associated with each form for MVC implementation. • What is the point declaring variables at the end of class?

  I saw multiple examples in MSDN that uses to declare the internal fields at the end of the class. What is the point? I find this a little embarrassing, because each time Visual Studio adds a method it adds it to the end of the class, so there is need every time to move it... class A { public A(){} // Methods, Properties, etc ... private string name; } class A { private string name; public A(){} // Methods, Properties, etc ... }

  During the design html pages or aspx pages, I like to do the pure coding without Html Designer. The problem is that I like to have the following format on html page for better readability. <div> <% if (1 == 1) { %> Hello <% } else { %> World <% } %> </div> As you can guess, whenever you type '}' or ';' or etc, visual studio try to do the auto format and change to the following format <div> <% if (1 == 1) { %> Hello <% } else { %> World <% } %> </div> The question is "Is it possible to disable auto formatting just only for HTML pages on VS2010?   I've got some non-copyable classes. I don't invoke any of the copy operators or constructor, and this code compiles fine. But then I upgraded to Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate instead of Professional. Now the compiler is calling the copy constructor- even when the move constructor should be invoked. For example, in the following snippet: inline D3D9Mesh CreateSphere(D3D9Render& render, float radius, float slices) { D3D9Mesh retval(render); /* ... */ return std::move(retval); } Error: Cannot create copy constructor, because the class is non-copyable. However, I quite explicitly moved it.

• Install a certficate on a device

  I need to install a certificate on a Windows Mobile device. I have tried creating a cab file to do it, but the cab file fails to run. I have a lot of devices that are not all physically near me that I am going to need to put this on, so any manual process is just not feasible (ie, if it needs active sync then it is not going to work). Any ideas on how to do this? Visual Studio does not seem to support what I am trying to do.

  I use Aptana Studio for my PHP projects. I have not learned it but just used with what I was able to do in it. Many features I still don't know how to use in it. At present, I have a HTML form and I want to write a .php script for the SEND button that it has. It is a submission script for the contact form. I want a simple PHP IDE with which I can execute a single PHP file or work with at least two or three files easily, without much mess. Please suggest a simple alternative to Aptana.

• Should I use C(99) booleans ? ( also c++ booleans in c++ ?)

  I haven't done much c programming but when I do when I need a false I put 0 when I want true I put 1, (ex. while(1)), in other cases I use things like "while(ptr)" or "if(x)". Should I try using C99 booleans, should I recommend them to others if I'm helping people new to programming learn c basics(thinking of cs 1?? students)? I'm pretty sure the Visual Studio compiler supports c99 bools, but do a lot of projects (open source and c apps in industry) compile for c89? If I don't use C bools should I at least do something like #define TRUE 1 #define FALSE 0? Also what about c++ Booleans (for c++)?

  Hi, How can I setup Eclipse to stop at the point an exception occurred. I have an Eclipse breakpoint setup to break on an exception. In the code example below, the problem I'm having is Eclipse tries to open the Integer source code. Is there any way to just have debugger break at the point shown in my code example? If I move down the stack trace, I will get to this line, it'd be nice if there's a way to do this without the "Source not found" window coming up. • [ASP.NET MVC] Problem with View - it does not refresh after db update

  Hi, I am working with small ASP.NET MVC project - online store. I have addToCart method which adds selected product to cart - it updates cart table in my db and showing cart view with its content. But I have problems. while db is updating correctly the view does not. I see that quantity of the product in my db is incremented correctly but quantity in view is not changed. I have to stop debugging my app in visual studia and restart it - then my view is showing correct data. What can be wrong?

• Utilizing a third party application for GitHub in a django project

  I'm trying to use a third party application located here: git://github.com/Star2Billing/django-audiofield.git I'm using Aptana Studio as my IDE. I created my project and then I clicked on the project and imported the app from the github location. It looked like it imported. I wanted to check that it imported properly before beginning any real coding so I performed manage.py validate. I got a message that stated: "No module named audiofield". I added the app to my Installed Apps settings and followed the installation instructions. I'm not sure if I'm importing it incorrectly. Also, I'm using virtualenv in Aptana. I'm not sure if this may have added to the problem. Please help.

• Using a database with C#

  I have been trying to do something that I think would be really easy but have never used C# before and am having trouble with the details. I simple want to use a sql database with Visual C# Express 2008. For testing purposes I have a datagrid on my form that can reflect changes to the db. If i use this: codesTableAdapter.Fill(dataSet1.codes); The datagrid(dataset) will fill with the info from the sql database. If i then do something like this: codesTableAdapter.InsertQuery(txtCode.Text,txtName.Text); codesTableAdapter.Fill(dataSet1.codes); codesTableAdapter.Update(dataSet1); dataSet1.AcceptChanges(); The datagrid reflects the changes but if close the program and go to the database the changes are not there. When I open the program again the changes are not there. I have a feeling this isn't too clear as my understanding here is very low so please let me know what other info is needed. Thanks

• Easiest way to keep SSRS child elements in the same relative position when the parent is re-positioned?

  I am trying to revise the layout of an SSRS report where I have several textboxes that are child elements of a rectangle. When I reposition the parent rectangle down by x, all of the child textboxes maintain the same absolute position. Their "Location" (defined relative to the parent) decreases by x. I then need to reposition the child textboxes. Additionally, if any of these ever has a negative "Location" then the parent rectangle is then repositioned back up by x. What is the easiest way to move everything in unison? I can Control-click everything and then drag them or use the arrow keys, but I want to position everything with precision and the "Location" field in the Properties window disappears when selecting more than one item. Is there a way I can avoid individually computing and typing in every "Location" value every time I have a small layout change? I am using SSRS (11.0.3360.12) within the Visual Studio 2012 Shell.   I need a button that is visually completely customizable, but has custom logic to publish events and manage it's visual state based on events it has registered for. When I say visually customizable, I mean I should be able to both create the button in xaml and set it's style by binding to the supplied style. Or I can create an instance of the button and set the style by passing a parameter to an alternate constructor. Or by calling a method on the button class to set the style. I do not plan on substituting the controls template, it should be a button. Can anyone point me to some code samples of this?

  I am very confused. I have this lamba expression: tvPatientPrecriptionsEntities.Sort((p1, p2) => p1.MedicationStartDate .Value .CompareTo(p2.MedicationStartDate.Value)); Visual Studio will not compile it and complains about syntax. I converted the lamba expression to an anonymous delegate as so: tvPatientPrecriptionsEntities.Sort( delegate(PatientPrecriptionsEntity p1, PatientPrecriptionsEntity p2) { return p1.MedicationStartDate .Value .CompareTo(p2.MedicationStartDate.Value); }); and it works fine. The project uses .NET 3.5 and I have a reference to System.Linq.
