• MonthCalendar control selection range with EnableVisualStyles?

  I'm using the MonthCalendar control and want to programmatically select a date range. When I do so the control doesn't paint properly if Application.EnableVisualStyles() has been called. This is a known issue according to MSDN. Using the MonthCalendar with visual styles enabled will cause a selection range for the MonthCalendar control to not paint correctly (from: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.forms.monthcalendar.aspx) Is there really no fix for this other than not calling EnableVisualStyles? This seems to make that particular control entirely useless for a range of applications and a rather glaring oversight from my perspective.

• Pass structured data from C++ app to ASP.NET web service.

  I have Visual C++ application that needs to communicate with a ASP.NET web service. Specifically, the app needs to pass structured data (e.g. objects that contain lists of structures, etc) as a parameter to one of the service methods. The C++ application is already generating an xml document that contains this data. The document is generating using an xml library, so it should always well-formed. What is a good method for passing this data to the web service? I'm thinking about passing the document to the web service as a string parameter, then deserializing to a .NET object based on an xsd. But, I hear that passing an xml doc as a string parameter is not recommended. So, my questions: What are the pitfalls associated with sending the document as a string parameter, assuming that the document itself is always well-formed? Assuming the above is a bad idea, what are some good alternate approaches?

• How do I get MSBuild Task to generate XML Documents when building a solution?

  I have a solution with lots of projects. Each project is configured to generate the XML documentation file when building in Debug-Mode (which is default). That works when I build in Visual Studio 2008. In my build script on my integration server I advise MSBuild to build the whole solution, but it won't generate the documentation files. What can I do? I already tried to explicitly give the Debug-Condition to the build process, but it makes no difference. <Target Name="BuilSolution"> <MSBuild Projects="C:\Path\To\MySolution.sln" targets="Build" Properties="SolutionConfigurationPlatforms='Debug|Any CPU'"/> </Target> There seem to be some ideas to solve this problem when building single projects, but I can't afford to do this, so I need a hint for doing it this way. What should I do? My friend told me to change the signature to void CeaserCrypt(char str[256], char encrypted[256], int key). But I don't think that is correct. How can I get rid of the compile error?

• convert flv to mp3 with Java

  Hi, I'm pretty new in developing programs in Java. I'm currently writing a program that converts a flv video into mp3. I have already written such a program in Visual Studio.net C#, but the Problem is, that it isn't cross platform compatible... I used the ffmpeg binary to convert the video into mp3, but I can't find ffmpeg binaries for Mac and Linux. (if so, I could start the specific binaries from java, depending on the OS) So I tried to convert the video with Xuggle, but the final mp3 has 0 bytes. • Secrets of delivering .NET size large products?

  In software companies I have seen it's really hard to work on very large products where everything depends on everything else. For instance Microsoft works on C#, F#, .NET, WPF, Visual Studio where these things are interconnected. I don't know how many people are involved, but if it's in 100s, how do they keep in sync with everything, so they design and implement features without conflicting with other dependencies and future plans of other products? I am wondering that if MS is able to do this, they must have a very good system. Any guidelines or secrets for MS or non-MS very large software product delivering?

• Is System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability the wrong source to detect the current render-mode

  I use System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier to show the current render mode within a diagnostics panel of my app. If I force the app to change the render-mode through the following code HwndSource hwndSource = PresentationSource.FromVisual(visual) as System.Windows.Interop.HwndSource; HwndTarget hwndTarget = hwndSource.CompositionTarget; hwndTarget.RenderMode = renderMode; neither System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.TierChanged fires, nor has the System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier property changed. However the changes are applied to the app. If I look with Perforator, the render mode has been changed to the desired mode. Although I’ve found at many locations that System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability.Tier can be used to detect the current render state (also msdn, see this), it seems, System.Windows.Media.RenderCapability only gives information about the capabilities and not about the current mode. That makes also sense if I look at the name of the class. Is there another source to know how an actual wpf-content is rendered or am I doing something wrong?

  I have written an installer and uninstaller in NSIS which creates and drops an sql database, which is working fine. I have written some .bat and .sql files to create and drop the database and then just call these files from NSIS script. My problem is if I keep this database open in SQL Server Management Studio and run the uninstaller ideally it should give an error message that the database is opened. In my case it shows the success message of uninstaller but dosnt drop the database properly. How can I handle this error in NSIS?

But when I fetch It in asp.net then Xml returned is broken into two rows if xml exceeds certain character limit. I want result to be in single row. I am unable to figure out why single xml string is broken into two rows. please help

  I have a DataGridView that is being filled with data from a table. Inside this table is a column called 'group' that has the ID of an individual group in another table. What I would like to do, is when the DataGridView is filled, instead of showing the ID contained in 'group', I'd like it to display the name of the group. Is there some type of VB.net 'magic' that can do this, or do I need to cross-reference the data myself? Here is a breakdown of what the 2 tables look like: table1 id group (this holds the value of column id in table 2) weight last_update table2 id description (this is what I would like to be displayed in the DGV.) BTW - I am using Visual Studio Express.

• Should we develop code on a local machine in a VLAN?

  Because of security reasons, we will not be able to use IIS on our local machines. I'm sure that many of you have faced the same problem, so how did you solve it? Here are the options that we're looking at: Create a VLAN that is isolated from the network for development. This will allow us to use any software, including IIS, that we want. A disadvantage is testing Web services with external organizations, which can be overcome by using stubs. Not use a VLAN and use only the ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio, and then deploying that code to the development server. This has the disadvantage of not being able to replicate the production environment during local development. In addition, at least one developer needs IIS for GIS development, so he couldn't develop locally. Thank you for comments or suggestions that you may have!

• Parsing C# code to evaluate expressions (basically, implementing Intellisense)

  I'm trying to evaluate C# code as it gets typed, think of it as if I'm trying to write an IDE. So a person types code, I want to find out what code did he just write: String x = ""; I want to now register that x is a type of String. And now everytime the user types x again, and I want to show him all the things he can do with x, basically like Visual Studio Intellisense. Will I need some lexers or parsers for this? Will that make it easier? I've heard VS 2010 has some features around this that Microsoft has released. Any ideas?

• Mail program splits link over two lines

  Hi, In C#, I'm sending a mail with an activation link to users after they have registered. However, the link is split over two lines in the mail and thus doesn't work. I've checked in Visual Studio and the string containing the link looks fine. I've also tried: strMessage.Replace("\r", ""); strMessage.Replace("\n", ""); but without success. Do you have any ideas on how to solve this? I've googled it for hours and can't find the solution... Thanks! /J

  When i was at university i wrote a lot of C++. I primarily used either Visual Studio (at the time it was version 6) or VIM (if i was on linux) as an editor to write my code. Since i have graduate and have been working primarily in web programming i have stopped writing C++. Since i graduated i have also bought myself and started using my Mac exclusively. I am now starting to get back to my C++ coding (just for fun) and would like an opinion on good IDE's for Mac. I am currently using xCode which seems kinda cool because it has everything built into it. Do any of you have any other IDE's that you would suggest that i give a shot or should i just stick to xCode?

• Is there a tool that will show diagrams of my SQL database in real-time?

  I've created some diagrams of SQL tables using the "Reverse Engineer" feature of Microsoft Office Visio. I like being able to visualize my relational databases in this manner. However, what I get is just a static document that I can print, e-mail to colleagues, and click widgets on. Earlier this year, I saw at a demo that the new version of Visual Studio 2010 has a new feature called the "Architect Explorer", which allows developers to view relationships among .net classes on the fly. It has many features for filtering the data that the developer is interested in. It would be really awesome if I could visually browse my tables and stored procedures and see what is related to what by primary key, foreign key, and referenced in stored procedures. I realize that I'm talking about two entirely different technologies and it's not a perfect analogy, but is there some similar tool that would allow me to visualize tables in my SQL database?

• .NET web service call slower when performed asynchronously

  I have an ASP.NET site, and some pages need to call a web service. I used Visual Studio's "Add Web Reference" to auto-generate classes and methods for the web service. When I call the service synchronously, i.e. objService.MethodName("param1"), a call might take a second or so. When I call it asynchronously, i.e., objService.BeginMethodName("param1", AddressOf MyCallback, Nothing), it typically takes about 6 seconds. When debugging, it appears that the bulk of the time is spent waiting between the completion of the BeginMethodName call and the beginning of MyCallback. Does the thread switching really incur that much overhead? Is there another reason for this?

• Why can I check some event handlers for null, some not?

  Hi, I have a ugly piece of code that adds event handlers. The problem is, if the code is called multiple times, the event handlers are called multiple times. To solve the problem, I remove the event handler first and then add it. Now I've seen the following behaviour: Some event handlers can be checked like: if (object.event == null) { // // Code // } others of the form if (object.object.event == null) { // // Code // } I get a message like 'object.object.event' may only occur left of -= or +=. (Since I'm using a german version of visual studio, I don't know the correct translation to english). I have no idea why the behaviour looks this inconsequent so I would be grateful for some information on this.   Hi, I was trying to install a CMS in a folder in my website. After the installation on trying to run, it shows this error: Error 14 It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS. E:\Users\Sarin\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\WebSites\WebAssist\blog\web.config 61 I added the webiste as a Virtual Directory and also converted that to application.   So i created a web site a long time ago using a designer alot like frontpage + expression design put together, and since then Ive gotten more into coding, and I'm learning html, CSS, and all that good stuff.. and i have this re-designed header that Ive made here: http://prntscr.com/8zct So what I need to know, is how i can get it so that when a user clicks on one of the links in the header design it will redirect to a page. and also if possible, how to make it so when a user hovers over a link a drop down may appear with other options. As me being quite new to this sort of stuff, could anybody help me achieve this? PS. • Trying to use tcl threads on windows 7 results in access violation.

  I'm trying to get this simple program to work on windows, but it crashes: unsigned (__stdcall testfoo)(ClientData x) { return 0; } int main() { Tcl_ThreadId testid = 0; Tcl_CreateThread(&testid, testfoo, (ClientData) NULL, TCL_THREAD_STACK_DEFAULT, TCL_THREAD_NOFLAGS); } I am using a makefile generated by cmake and linking against a version of Tcl 8.5.7 I compiled myself using Visual C++ 2008 express. It was compiled using msvcrt,static,threads and the name of the resulting library is tcl85tsx.lib. The error is: Unhandled exception at 0x77448c39 in main.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000014. The Tcl library works fine, and I can even run a threading script example by loading the Thread extension into it. My assumption is that there is something horribly wrong with a memory violation, but I have no idea what. Any help appreciated.

• SqlAlchemy hangs after adding record in MS SQL

  I'm running SQLAlchemy on Jython and trying to connect to a MS SQL database using jTDS with windows authentication. I can query and delete just fine but when I try to insert new values it will hang when I commit. int 'before add' session.add(newVal) print 'after add' session.commit() print 'after commit' I see the first two print statements but not the last. My CPU maxes out and I can't even query the table directly using the MS SQL Management Studio. When I kill the Jython java process I can query again but the new values haven't been added. Strangely enough I can insert values directly using an SQL command: insert_sql = "INSERT INTO my_table (my_value) VALUES ('test_value')" session.execute(insert_sql) session.commit() Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

• How do I remove a control if not a specific type?

  I have a control that I need to restrict the types of child controls that it can contain during design time (dragging a new control onto an existing control on the form designer). What does this mean? How can I accomplish this without errors occurring?
