I have a Windows 7 Enterprise x64 machine both at work and at home for some reason the UAC dialog windows like to pop UNDER all of my windows instead of on top of everything, is this a bug? It's not consistent whether it will pop over or pop under.
I have one disk partitioned into 2 logical drives, C and D. There is no unallocated space. I need to add space to C: so I want to use some space from D (plenty available).
How can I do this without losing data on D:?
Edit: This is a Windows machine.
Assuming there exists a user with a laptop that is not part of the domain, is it possible for an Outlook 2010 on this machine to access mailbox, calendar and the rest associated with the user's mailbox on an Exchange 2010 server? OWA is a solution, but given the significance of the user, it would be very handy if the same could be achieved with Outlook 2010 and without his laptop joining the domain.
Hi Gods,
We have windows server 2003 with isa 2004. Our clients uses internet with proxy.
We have two isa rule:
order name action protocolls from/listener to condition
1. trafic ALLOW all outbound all networks all networks all users
2. FTP ALLOW FTP Server EXTERNAL/INTERNAL/Local host 10.1.1.1
So we have to "bann" a few webpage (like facebook, youtube...etc...), so we make a new rule
0. banned DENY HTTP internal denied pages all users
In the denied pages we have the *.facebook.com domain set.
After we enable this rule, the entire internet slows down. The banning rule works well, redirect to an internal site, but the other sites.... If i open a page..it normally takes 3-10 sec to load, but after this rule this time is: 2-4 minutes.
In the monitor / logging menu we got a few FAILED CONNECTION ATTEMPT like:
Log type: Web Proxy (Forward)
Status: 304 Not Modified
Rule: All local traffic
Source: Internal ( 10.1.1.1:0 )
Destination: External ( 172.24.28.22:3128 )

In the event log we got a few log:

I have installed Tomcat6 using the 32-bit/64-bit Windows Service Installer download version. In the setup instructions, it is recommended that "For optimal security, the service should be run as a separate user, with reduced permissions". I created a new local/standard user (Tomcat) to run the service. The Tomcat service is listed in my list of Services and it's running under my user profile. However, I can't figure out how to set/change which user to start it as.
Getting the following error on my SBS 2003 R2 Server:
Server ActiveSync:
Unexpected Exchange mailbox Server error: Server: [celeritympp.mpp1.local] User: [[email protected]] HTTP status code: [409]. Verify that the Exchange mailbox Server is working correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is it better to run a VM on a dual core hyperthreaded machine as a four core or as a two core VM.
The hyperthreaded 'virtual' cores are not as fast as the real cores. Does this effect the VM?
I have the 'Safely Remove Hardware' tray icon set to 'Show icon and notifications' to save a mouse click when removing a USB device but every few weeks the setting reverts to 'Only show notifications'. Does anyone know what causes this and/or how I can prevent it?
I'm using Windows 7 SP1 64bit with a fairly bare installation (the machine hosts a set of virtual machines that I use to do my work).
Thanks!
One of the desktop computers in my office is unable to access some particular websites. We've tried from Chrome, IE, Firefox, but no luck. eg:
http://spsims.wto.org/ -> click on "Regular notifications"
On the affected computer, every browser times out after the click.
Whereas it should redirect the user to
http://spsims.wto.org/web/pages/search/notification/regular/Search.aspx
How can I diagnose this further? This is a Windows XP machine.
I just followed How to use Group Policy to remotely install software in Windows Server 2003 to try publishing a software (MSI file). I could follow all the steps, but the supposedly successfully published software does not appear on client/user machine's Add/Remove Programs.
Could some help figure why this may not be working.
Update:
On reading this question on Experts-Exchange, tried gpresults. Output extract follows:

The following GPOs were not applied because they were filtered out

On my XP machine, a python.exe process starts every so on which takes up 100% of my CPU. I have to kill it from the task monitor.. How can one identify what this process is and how you can disable it? I have no idea what is starting Python.
I have a machine with two harddrives. I have installed OpenSolaris on one of them and now I want to add the other one as a mirror-drive in my zpool rpool. I guess I have to format the second disk first and then add it to the pool. How can I do this?
I would like to limit failure retries on my Fedora machine to 5. I think I can accomplish it with PAM. But was unable to to do this.
I have referred to this article to do this

Please provide suggestions
How can I limit the time spent on the computer or force a log out from a Windows 7 machine?
I used to use Windows Steady State to limit users (kids) from being on too long but SteadyState does not work with Windows 7 Home Premium and is discontinued.
Is there a way to set this up in Windows 7 where it will kick off a user after a set time? Or perhaps there's an alternative program that can help limit the time one user is at the computer.
I am familiar with using both Versions and Cornerstone on Mac - they are fantastic and incredibly simple to use... but I don't want to always rely on being able to borrow my girlfriend's MacBook so need to find an alternative for my Windows machine.
Can anyone please recommend a good subversion client? I have experimented using Tortoise and RapidSVN and couldn't even get them working :( I'd like something just incredibly simple if possible.
Thank you!
People in our company asked to encrypting some of the shared folders published in a local Windows 2003 File Server. The requirements are:
Encrypt the files, so only a user or group or users can open them
Avoid password protected files. The encryption process should be transparent to the users
Though files are encrypted, the backup software (BackupExec) must be able to copy and access binary for verification
Cannot install tools/software in user's PCs, they want this to work automatically
As we have very little experience managing servers, we'll be grateful for any help or suggestion offered.
Print server is a VM on Xen The VM is Windows 2003 32bit. During the issue the VM is not being taxed in anyway, cpu, memory, hd read/write, and network speed is all good.
The problem that I see is the transfer of the print file from the print server to the printer. The 80Mb file is transferred from the client to the print server in about 2 minutes but then it takes about 2 hours for that file to be sent to the printer. I can't figure out why this would just start to happen.
The printer is rebooted every evening and is just used for one large print job in the morning.
The server has been rebooted with no effect
I changed the spool option to send the entire spool to the server before printing starts and it had no effect.
This printer problem did happen to come about after some changes to the Xen environment. The Xen servers changed from using HBA NIC cards to software iscsi and a new switch was put in. I don't think this is related to the problem since all the speeds on the VMs are better now. The changed happened on Saturday and the first print to this printer happened on Monday morning. I'm just putting that out there but like I said I don't think it is related but I don't want to rule it out.
At this point I don't have many other options besides the physical layer. I can switch out network cable that goes to the printer and I might be able to print the same job to another printer. I wont be able to test those things out till this afternoon though.
Any other ideas or test I could do to try to find the reason for the slow speed?
I forgot to say that this is only happening when printing to this one printer.
===Update===
I found out that there are a few printers that currently have this issue, not just the one. There are over 30 printers on the server though so I know it's not happening to all of them.
I printed a large pdf doc from the server and it was able to print at the normal speed.
If the machine sends the large print request it gets to the server fine but then slow to get from the server to the printer. If sent directly from the printer it gets to the printer at the normal speed.
The question now is why is there a speed difference when it comes from the machine and why would it start now?
Hi,
I am new to Windows Server but have been given a copy of Standard R2. I want to use it on my old Desktop as a file server/ Time Machine like backup device. Is this possible? Is it possible to use it like Dropbox where I can sync a folder with it over the web (perhaps using DynDNS since I am on cable modem?)
Sincerely,
tesmar
Is there any advantage to use a Linux machine to develop instead of Windows?
Everyone at work tells me to switch to Linux, since I'm developing hard-core on linux anyway.
I manage 40 servers, and do everything from DB to data-backend to developing web services.
I don't find anything wrong with Putty. I"m just too lazy to install another OS...
What do you guys think?
I have a database in one of my Visual Studio Express projects. I want to attach it to my local SQLEXPRESS instance so I can run aspnet_regsql on it and add the membership database. When I select Attach Databases and then attempt to browse to the files (C:\Users\username\Documents\Visual Studio 2010\Projects\nameofproject) it only lets me navigate to C:\Users\username...Why? How can I fix this?
We use Apache 2.2 to host SVN repository on a Windows 2003 machine.
Works fine except that over a couple of weeks the httpd process inflates and starts consuming something like 1.5 gigabytes of virtual memory. All operations with the repository become very slow.
What to tweak to prevent httpd from cosuming so many resources?
Hi There
I need to be able to create name server entries for new domains being registered and need some help in setting up a name server on the internet. I am looking for some good resources - prefereably with a windows machine.
Any tips to help getting started greatly appreciated.
Cheers.
