• JMaghreb 2012 Trip Report

  JMaghreb is the inaugural Java conference organized by Morocco JUG. It is the biggest Java conference in Maghreb (5 countries in North West Africa). Oracle was the exclusive platinum sponsor with several others. The registrations had to be closed at 1412 for the free conference and several folks were already on the waiting list. Rabat with 531 registrations and Casablanca with 426 were the top cities. Some statistics ... 850+ attendees over 2 days, 500+ every day 30 sessions were delivered by 18 speakers from 10 different countries 10 sessions in French and 20 in English 6 of the speakers spoke at JavaOne 2012 8 will be at Devoxx Attendees from 5 different countries and 57 cities in Morocco 40.9% qualified them as professional and rest as students Topics ranged from HTML5, Java EE 7, ADF, JavaFX, MySQL, JCP, Vaadin, Android, Community, JCP Java EE 6 hands-on lab was sold out within 7 minutes and JavaFX in 12 minutes I gave the keynote along with Simon Ritter which was basically a recap of the Strategy and Technical keynotes presented at JavaOne 2012. An informal survey during the keynote showed the following numbers: 25% using NetBeans, 90% on Eclipse, 3 on JDeveloper, 1 on IntelliJ About 10 subscribers to free online Java magazine. This digital magazine is a comprehensive source of information for everything Java - subscribe for free!! About 10-15% using Java SE 7. Download JDK 7 and get started today! Even JDK 8 builds have been available for a while now. My second talk explained the core concepts of WebSocket and how JSR 356 is providing a standard API to build WebSocket-driven applications in Java EE 7. TOTD #183 explains how you can easily get started with WebSocket in GlassFish 4. The complete slide deck is available: Next day started with a community keynote by Sonya Barry. Some of us live the life of JCP, JSR, EG, EC, RI, etc every day, but not every body is. To address that, Sonya prepared an excellent introductory presentation providing an explanation of these terms and how java.net infrastructure supports Java development. The registration for the lab showed there is a definite demand for these technologies in this part of the world. I delivered the Java EE 6 hands-on lab to a packed room of about 120 attendees. Most of the attendees were able to progress and follow the lab instructions. Some of the attendees did not have a laptop but were taking extensive notes on paper notepads. Several attendees were already using Java EE 6 in their projects and typically they are the ones asking deep dive questions. Also gave out three copies of my recently released Java EE 6 Pocket Guide and new GlassFish t-shirts. Definitely feels happy to coach ~120 more Java developers learn standards-based enterprise Java programming. I also participated in a JCP BoF along with Werner, Sonya, and Badr. Adotp-a-JSR, java.net infrastructure, how to file a JSR, what is an RI, and other similar topics were discussed in a candid manner. There was a 1.8 mile loop dirt trail right next to it so I managed to squeeze some runs before my upcoming marathon. Also enjoyed some great Moroccan cuisine - Couscous, Tajine, mint tea, and moroccan salad. Visit to Kasbah of the Udayas, Hassan II (one of the tallest mosque in the world), and eating in a restaurant in a kasbah are some of the exciting local experiences. • How to configure a GridView CommandField to trigger Full Page Update in UpdatePanel

  I have 2 user controls on my page. One is used for searching, and the other is used for editing (along with a few other things). The user control that provides the search functionality uses a GridView to display the search results. This GridView has a CommandField used for editing (showEditButton="true"). I would like to place the GridView into an UpdatePanel so that paging through the search results will be smooth. The thing is that when the user clicks the Edit Link (the CommandField) I need to preform a full page postback so that the search user control can be hidden and the edit user control can be displayed. Edit: the reason I need to do a full page postback is because the edit user control is outside of the UpdatePanel that my GridView is in. It is not only outside the UpdatePanel, but it's in a completely different user control. I have no idea how to add the CommandField as a full page postback trigger to the UpdatePanel. The PostBackTrigger (which is used to indicate the controls cause a full page postback) takes a ControlID as a parameter; however the CommandButton does not have an ID...and you can see why I'm having a problem with this. Update on what else I've tried to solve the problem: I took a new approach to solving the problem. In my new approach, I used a TemplateField instead of a CommandField. I placed a LinkButton control in the TemplateField and gave it a name. During the GridView's RowDataBound event I retrieved the LinkButton control and added it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This is the ASP Markup for the UpdatePanel and the GridView <asp:UpdatePanel ID="SearchResultsUpdateSection" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:GridView ID="SearchResultsGrid" runat="server" AllowPaging="true" AutoGenerateColumns="false"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField> <HeaderTemplate></HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <asp:LinkButton ID="Edit" runat="server" Text="Edit"></asp:LinkButton> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:BoundField ...... </Columns> </asp:GridView> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> In my VB.NET code. I implemented a function that handles the GridView's RowDataBound event. In this method I find the LinkButton for the row being bound to, create a PostBackTrigger for the LinkButton, and add it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This means that a PostBackTrigger is created for every "edit" LinkButton in the GridView Edit: this did not create a PostBackTrigger for Every "edit" LinkButton because the ID is the same for all LinkButtons in the GridView. After reading the MSDN article on the UpdatePanel.Triggers Property I have the impression that Triggers can only be defined declaratively. • Pre-built UI components for displaying SSRS Local Mode Parameters

  BACKGROUND Am writing a WinForm app that uses the SSRS Report Viewer control to render reports in local mode - there is no SSRS server involved at all I can successully create and execute reports in local mode What I want to do is add Parameters to the report THE PROBLEM When the Report Viewer control executes a report in local mode it does not provide any UI that allows the user to enter values for parameters defined in the report This is in contrast to to when the Report Viewer control is running a server report - parameters are shown. MY QUESTION Are there pre-built components or even sample code I can use that would provide a reasonble parameter user experience for this scenario (scenario = SSRS + Report Viewer Control + Local Mode)? Yes, I could write this UI code myself - what I am looking for is existing code to avoid having to implement this UI because I'd rather spend my time making the content of the report work well NOTES Switching to another reporting engine besides SSRS is not an option. Switching to server side reports is not an option.

  I am trying to render a simple hyperlink that links to a named anchor within the page, for example: <a href="#namedAnchor"scroll to down</a <a name="namedAnchor"down</a The problem is that when I use an ASP.NET control like asp:HyperLink or HtmlAnchor, the href="#namedAnchor" is rendered as href="controls/#namedAnchor" (where controls is the subdirectory where the user control containing the anchor is).   I am investigating automated testing of an old Win32 application that used ActiveX controls. I am spiking use White (from Thougthworks) that uses Microsoft UIAutomation. I can find the AutomationElement related to the control, but how do I interact with it? Spy++ sees the grid control as a single window, so I can't talk to rows, columns, or cells directly.   A figura abaixo oferece uma visão geral das possibilidades de monitoramento providas pelo Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), que é uma ferramenta que permite gerenciar a infraestrutura de TI da empresa. Um componente importante da solução é chanado OEM Grid Control. Esse componente permite gerenciar, visualizar e monitorar diversos elementos a partir de uma mesma console. E que elementos podem ser monitorados? No conceito utilizado pelo OEM, os elementos que podem ser monitorados são chamados de Targets, e esses targets envolvem a monitoração de hosts (Windows, Linux, Solaris), Banco de Dados, Middleware, Aplicações Web, Serviços que podem ser customizados pelo administrador, Sistemas e Grupos de targets, além dos aplicativos Oracle. Cada elemento monitorado é ativado através de packs de gerenciamento. Ou seja, há uma série de packs que podem ser adquiridas conforme a necessidade, para permitir a monitoração a partir do próprio OEM Grid Control. Existem packs de monitoramento especiais para banco de dados Oracle, packs de monitoramento para Tomcat, Jboss, WebLogic, SOA Suite, Identity Management. Os plugins permitem o gerenciamento de elementos adicionais, tais como dispositivos de rede, servidores, banco de dados de terceiros (DB2, SQL Server), Vmware, etc. Já os conectores permitem a integração com outros softwares, tais como gerenciadores de requisições de helpdesk, de modo a integrar os alertas gerados pela ferramenta e gerar tickets em ferramentas como CA Service Desk, BMC Remedy e outros. A extensão de funcionalidades é realmente bem vasta. Num próximo post irei comentar sobre o Ops Center, um novo componente que surgiu após a aquisição da Sun. Além do Grid Control e do Ops Center, há outros componentes bem interessantes. A figura abaixo ilustra diversas camadas onde o ferramental Oracle pode ser usado para monitoração. Há uma pack que permite gerenciar os níveis de serviços em todas as camadas ilustradas. Dada uma requisição, pode-se decompor os dados de SLA em cada camada. E há também o Real User Monitoring, que trata de medir a experiência com o usuário. Falarei disso num novo post, mas basicamente a ferramenta permite acompanhar todo o tráfego de rede gerado dos usuários finais até os servidores web, e com isso rastrear como cada usuário usa a aplicação, quanto tempo ele navega pelo site, se ele enfrentou algum tipo de problema, se houve algum pedido não finalizado devido a algum problema na infraestrutura. É uma ferramenta bem interessante, falarei um pouco mais dela depois. E claro, há também componentes para a realização de testes funcionais e de carga. Em breve, aqui no blog :)

  Hi everyone ! I whant to apply a little storyboard to a collection of labels in my window.   Hi, I am trying to use my .net image editor user control as an activeX object in a web form. I have the Searching logic all working. The control builds custom search fields and performs searches based on declarative C# classes implementing my SearchSpec interface. How can I make it so that the C# Code Behind will have the controls generated and not null in my Page_Load event so that developers can just do this: testNameBox.Text = "foo"; ownerBox.Text = "bar"; descriptionBox.Text = "baz";

  Hi you all, I'm trying to do this contest exercise about graphs: XPTO is an intrepid adventurer (a little too temerarious for his own good) who boasts about exploring every corner of the universe, no matter how inhospitable. In fact, he doesn't visit the planets where people can easily live in, he prefers those where only a madman would go with a very good reason (several millions of credits for instance). His latest exploit is trying to survive in Proxima III. The problem is that Proxima III suffers from storms of highly corrosive acids that destroy everything, including spacesuits that were especially designed to withstand corrosion. Our intrepid explorer was caught in a rectangular area in the middle of one of these storms. Fortunately, he has an instrument that is capable of measuring the exact concentration of acid on each sector and how much damage it does to his spacesuit. Now, he only needs to find out if he can escape the storm. Problem The problem consists of finding an escape route that will allow XPTOto escape the noxious storm. You are given the initial energy of the spacesuit, the size of the rectangular area and the damage that the spacesuit will suffer while standing in each sector. Your task is to find the exit sector, the number of steps necessary to reach it and the amount of energy his suit will have when he leaves the rectangular area. The escape route chosen should be the safest one (i.e., the one where his spacesuit will be the least damaged). Notice that Rodericus will perish if the energy of his suit reaches zero. In case there are more than one possible solutions, choose the one that uses the least number of steps. If there are at least two sectors with the same number of steps (X1, Y1) and (X2, Y2) then choose the first if X1 < X2 or if X1 = X2 and Y1 < Y2. Constraints 0 < E = 30000 the suit's starting energy 0 = W = 500 the rectangle's width 0 = H = 500 rectangle's height 0 < X < W the starting X position 0 < Y < H the starting Y position 0 = D = 10000 the damage sustained in each sector Input The first number given is the number of test cases. Each case will consist of a line with the integers E, X and Y. The following line will have the integers W and H. The following lines will hold the matrix containing the damage D the spacesuit will suffer whilst in the corresponding sector. Notice that, as is often the case for computer geeks, (1,1) corresponds to the upper left corner. Output If there is a solution, the output will be the remaining energy, the exit sector's X and Y coordinates and the number of steps of the route that will lead Rodericus to safety. In case there is no solution, the phrase Goodbye cruel world! will be written. • OpenVPN on Ubuntu 11.10 - unable to redirect default gateway

  I'm trying to connect to connect to OpenVPN server from my Ubuntu 11.10 machine. I use the following command to do it (under root user): openvpn --config /home/vladimir/client.ovpn Everything seems to be OK, it connects normally without any warnings and errors, but when I try to browse the internet I see that I still use my own IP address, so VPN connection doesn't work. When I run openvpn command, it displays the following message among others: NOTE: unable to redirect default gateway -- Cannot read current default gateway from system I think it's the cause of this problem, but unfortunately I don't know how to fix it. • MSBuild fails, but building inside Visual Studio works fine

  C#, .NET 2.0 I have an ASP.NET website in a solution, with 2 other projects (used as library references). When I build (debug or release) in Visual Studio, everything works fine. However, building with MSBuild fails. This build had been working (it's actually invoked via a nAnt task). The only thing that has changed is that I have a new user control whose Type I am referencing in my code behind. The offending code is in my ASPX code behind. MessageAlert is the UserControl: MessageAlert userControl = this.LoadControl("~/UserControls/MessageAlert.ascx") as MessageAlert; userControl.UserMessage = message; this.UserMessages.Controls.Add(userControl); In order to get Visual Studio to recognize the type 'MessageAlert' I had to: 1) Set the ClassName="MessageAlert" in the @Control markup at the top of the user control (because using the auto-generated UserControls_MessageAlert wasn't working either) 2) Register the user control in the markup of my ASPX, using an @Register 3) Add a "using ASP" to the top of my code behind After those steps, I could successfully reference the MessageAlert type in my codebehind from visual studio. But from MSBuild I get "The type or namespace name 'MessageAlert' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) " The MSBuild execution is very simple - it points the the very same solution file and sets the configuration property to release. It seems, based on the # of steps I had to go through to get Type references to MessageAlert in Visual Studio, that there is something missing in the MSBuild process. But what? Doesn't Visual Studio in fact invoke MSBuild behind the scenes? Is there a better way to reference a UserControl type in the code behind of an ASPX? EDIT: To clarify, the MessageAlert user control is not in the other referenced assemblies/projects. I mentioned them because, together with the website, the compose the Solution file, which is the same sln file being built by MS Build.

  Lets say I want to make a control to select any integer number by dragging on a "bar" with numbers: (156 is selected) Mousedown on "159" and dragging towards the left and then doing mouseup changes the control to this: (160 is selected) I've been experimenting for the past 3 hours but I'm inexperienced in Silverlight so I'm having problems getting started. My current guess is I should seperate this into 2 steps: Step 1: Build this control without swiping behavior. Just 2 buttons to go up a number or go down a number Step 2: Replace the buttons by handling mouse events. With my limited knowledge I think I would manage building a crappy control that does this, with very messy xaml and c# and lots of headaches when trying to apply styling and fancy state transitions, but I was hoping some xaml wizards could get me started with the basic approach? • How to explain to users the advantages of dumb primary key?

  Primary key attractiveness I have a boss(and also users) that wants primary key to be sophisticated/smart/attractive control number(sort of like Social Security number, or credit card number format) I just padded the primary key(in Views) with zeroes to appease their desire to make the control number sophisticated,smart and attractive. But they wanted it as: first 2 digits as client code, then 4 digits as year year, then last 4 digits as transaction number on that client on a given year, then reset the transaction number of client to 1 when next year flows. Each client's transaction starts with 1. e.g. WM20090001, WM20090002, BB2009001, WM20100001, BB20100001 But as I wanted to make things as simple as possible, I forgo embedding their suggested smartness in primary key, I just keep the primary key auto increments regardless of client and year. But to make it not dull-looking(they really are adamant to make the primary key as smart control number), I made the primary key appears to them smart, on view query, I put the client code and four digit year code on front of the eight-zero padded autoincrement key, i.e. WM200900000001. Sort of slug-like information on autoincremented primary key. Keeping primary key autoincrement regardless of any other information, we are able keep other potential side effects problem when they edit a record, for example, if they made a mistake of entering the transaction on WM, then they edit the client code to BB, if we use smart primary key, the primary keys of WM customer will have gaps in their control number. Or worse yet, instead of letting the control numbers have gaps/holes, the user will request that subsequent records of that gap should shift up to that gap and have their subsequent primary keys re-adjust(decremented). How do you deal with these user requests(reasonable or otherwise)? Do you yield to their request? Or just continue using dumb primary key and explain them the repercussions of having a very smart/sophisticated primary key and educate them the significant advantages of having a dumb primary key? • Programmatically change the default code page in Windows XP? (from Delphi)

  Could anyone advise how to programmatically change the default Windows XP code page (I'm doing this from Delphi)? (This would be the equivalent of going into Control Panel - Regional Settings - Language for non-Unicode applications). In this case, I want to switch to Chinese (PRC) and so am writing to the following registry strings: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage\ ACP=936 MACCP=10008 OEMCP=936 (Which is exactly what changing the non-Unicode codepage drop down in Control Panel does). There must be another setting which I need to change - and I'd prefer to use a Win API call (if available) rather than writing to the registry myself. I've also tried setting HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Language\ Default=0804 (Chinese PRC) to no avail. I don't want to change the 'locale' per se as this will also change time / date settings, separators, etc. etc. This is because I'm using an ANSI application that needs to render Chinese characters, and I'm writing a tool to automatically switch the system show the characters (while leaving other aspects of the UI intact).
