• Debugging an XBAP application with 64-bit browser

  We have an XBAP application that fails when opened in Internet Explorer 8 64 bit. We only get a pretty generic error which makes it hard to determine where the error is coming from. I'm trying to find a way to debug the application with IE 8 64 bit, but I haven't figured out how to do this. I can't set the 64 bit version as the standard browser and overwriting the browser path in the browsers.xml for Visual Studio doesn't work as well. It just gets overwritten as soon as I hit F5 to debug to point to the 32 bit IE. I have figured out how to start the application from Debug with the 64 bit browser by changing the Debug options from "Start browser with URL" to "Start external program" and setting the command line arguments to point to the bin folder. Unfortunately then the XBAP is looking for its config.deploy file which doesn't seem to be generated during regular debug. This doesn't happen when using "Start browser with URL" and the application doesn't seem to care for this file then. Does anybody know why there's a difference between "Start browser with URL" and "Start external program" in the Debug options which might cause this difference in behavior when Debug is started? Also, does anybody know how to successfully debug an XBAP with a 64-bit browser?

• Android depth buffer issue: Advice for anyone experiencing problem

  I've wasted around 30 hours this week writing and re-writing code, believing that I had misunderstood how the OpenGL depth buffer works. Everything I tried, failed. I have now resolved my problem by finding what may be an error in the Android implementation of OpenGL. See this API entry: http://www.opengl.org/sdk/docs/man/xhtml/glClearDepth.xml void glClearDepth(GLclampd depth); Specifies the depth value used when the depth buffer is cleared. The initial value is 1. Android's implementation has two versions of this command: glClearDepthx which takes an integer value, clamped 0-1 glClearDepthf which takes a floating point value, clamped 0-1 If you use glClearDepthf(1) then you get the results you would expect. If you use glClearDepthx(1), as I was doing then you get different results. (Note that 1 is the default value, but calling the command with the argument 1 produces different results than not calling it at all.) Quite what is happening I do not know, but the depth buffer was being cleared to a value different from what I had specified.

  Hi there, My application is using a model base on an xsd that have been converted to an ecore before generation of the java classes. One of my team member modified the .ecore metamodel in a previous version ,one attribute that used to be generated. He modified the attribute name but not the Extended MetaData specifying the element name used for xml persistance. <eStructuralFeatures xsi:type="ecore:EReference" name="javaDocsAndUserApi" upperBound="-1" eType="#//JavaDocsAndUserApi" containment="true" resolveProxies="false"> <eAnnotations source="http:///org/eclipse/emf/ecore/util/ExtendedMetaData"> <details key="kind" value="element"/> <details key="name" value="docsAndUserApi"/> </eAnnotations> </eStructuralFeatures> so we have an attribute name which is javaDocsAndUserApi and the persisted element named docsAndUserApi, and of course if I create change the attribute in the xsd to be named javaDocsAndUserApi, the ecore transformation will generate a metadata name javaDocsAndUserApi as well, which will break compatibility with previously persisted models. I have looked at xsd authoring guide to find an ecore:som_attribute that would allow me to specify which key to use in the xsd to force the metadata to be named docsAndUserApi during the xsd to ecore transformation but did not find anything. Does anybody have an idea to help me? Thank you.

• Suggestion on UPnP presentation

  Hi all, I am working on an embedded device (bit higher end in terms of system resources but still an embedded one) which has lot of media content in it. I am trying to make it UPnP complaint and want to be able to control this device using a UPnP complaint control point/companion device like ipad. The step towards this is to be able to present the playlist content to the user. We thought of using HTML5 as a format to use. But as I am a noob in web technologies, I am not sure whats the best way to produce and present rich dynamic web pages. The content thats presented are video/audio listing that device can play and want this listing to be generated using the user's input criteria. So, what would be the best way to generate these dynamic pages which are rich and rendered as HTML5 pages. (looked at XML & XSLT, but there seems to be some limitations in how well one can use XSLT from some rewviews I saw). • Run Visual Studio with Administrator Rights using app.manifest [ExecutionLevel]

  I need to change the key in a registry in order to restrict the user from using Task Manager, since it is an Kiosk application. My code for changing the registry is working perfectly for Administrator account. But my application is going to be run in normal user account. When i tried to run my application in normal user account, i get the below error : DisableTaskManagerSystem.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the registry key 'HKey_Current_User\Software\Mictrosoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System' is denied. at Microsoft.win32.RegistryKey.win32Error(int32 errorcode, String str) So i need to run my application with all administrator privileges. For which i am using the below app.manifest. But some how i getting the same error. How to overcome this ? • Problem: How to display a Wordpress RSS feed in a browser that doesn't have a built in RSS reader?

  If I can, i'd rather not use a service like FeedBurner. My setup: I've setup a RSS feed link on a self-hosted Wordpress website, clicking the RSS link in Safari shows the feed - because Safari has a built in RSS reader. Great. Unfortunately clicking the same RSS link in Chrome displays the raw XML feed. I know why this happens - Chrome doesn't have a built in RSS reader. I also assume this will be the same in older versions of Internet Explorer. Possible solution? I've noticed http://www.bbc.co.uk/news has a nice solution: Click the RSS feed (top tight of the page) in a RSS enabled browser (Safari) and it uses the built in RSS reader to display the RSS feed. Click the same RSS feed link in Chrome (Chrome has no built in RSS reader) it displays the RSS feed using what looks like a custom page. Is there a way to check if a browser has a built in RSS reader? How would I provide alternative content (like the BBC site) to a browser that doesn't have a RSS reader installed? Any help on this would be brilliant, thanks for taking the time to read this. Stephen

  I'm just playing around with some code. I create an Activity and simply do something like this: long lo = currentTimeMillis(); System.out.println(lo); lo *= 3; System.out.println(lo); SystemClock.setCurrentTimeMillis(lo); System.out.println( currentTimeMillis() ); Yes, in my AndroidManifest.xml, I've added: <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.SET_TIME"></uses-permission> <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.SET_TIME_ZONE"></uses-permission> Nothing changes. The SystemClock is never reset...it just keeps on ticking. The error that I'm getting just says that the permission "SET_TIME" was not granted to the program. Protection level 3. The permissions are there...and in the API for 2.2 it says that this feature is supported now. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If android.content.Intent; comes into play, please explain. I don't really understand what the idea behind intents! Thanks for any help!

• How To Create a Flexible Plug-In Architecture?

  A repeating theme in my development work has been the use of or creation of an in-house plug-in architecture. I've seen it approached many ways - configuration files (XML, .conf, and so on), inheritance frameworks, database information, libraries, and others. In my experience: A database isn't a great place to store your configuration information, especially co-mingled with data Attempting this with an inheritance hierarchy requires knowledge about the plug-ins to be coded in, meaning the plug-in architecture isn't all that dynamic Configuration files work well for providing simple information, but can't handle more complex behaviors Libraries seem to work well, but the one-way dependencies have to be carefully created. As I seek to learn from the various architectures I've worked with, I'm also looking to the community for suggestions. How have you implemented a solid plug-in architecture? What was your worst failure (or the worst failure you've seen)? What would you do if you were going to implement a new plug-in architecture? What SDK or open source project that you've worked with has the best example of a good architecture? A few examples I've been finding on my own: Perl's Module::Plugable An SO question with a list for Java (including Sever Provider Interfaces) An SO question for C++ pointing to a Dr. Dobbs article These examples seem to play to various language strengths. • How to Resolve a Transformation Service with BRE that occurs after an Orchestration in an Itinerary?

  In trying to implement simple integration patterns with Biztalk ESB Toolkit 2.0, I'm facing a problem trying to resolve a Transformation Itinerary Service that occurs after an Orchestration. I'm using the BRE Resolver to execute rules that need to inspect the Context Message Type property to determine the appropriate map to use. However, once the message reaches the step in the Itinerary associated with the Transformation Service, the map fails to execute. From careful investigation, it appears that the message type is not supplied to the "Resolution" object that is used internally by the BRE resolver. Indeed, since the message leaving the preceding Orchestration is typed System.Xml.XmlDocument, the type of the message is "demoted" from the context. By tracking rules engine execution, I can observe that the type of the message is indeed lost when reaching the BRE resolver. The type of the message is empty, whereas the strongly-typed of the document is Microsoft.XLANGs.BaseTypes.Any. The Orchestration service that I use is taken straight from the samples that ship with ESB Toolkit 2.0. Is there a way to perform Context-Based BRE resolution after an Orchestration in an Itinerary?

  Imagine the UI passes back an XMl node as such: <properties> <type> Source </type> <name> Blooper </name> <delay> <type> Deterministic </type> <parameters> <param> 4 </param> </parameters> <delay> <batch> <type> Erlang </type> <parameters> <param> 4 </param> <param> 6 </param> </parameters> <batch> And behind the scene what it is asking that you instantiate a class as such: new Source("blooper", new Exp(4), new Erlang(4,6); The problem lies in the fact that you don't know what class you will need to processing, and you will be sent a list of these class definitions with instructions on how they can be linked to each other. I've heard that using a BeanFactoryPostProcessor might be helpful, or a property editor/convertor. However I am at a loss as to how best to use them to solve my problem. Any help you can provide will be much appreciated.

• Error logging in C#

  I am making my switch from coding in C++ to C#. I need to replace my C++ error logging/reporting macro system with something similar in C#. In my C++ source I can write LOGERR("Some error"); or LOGERR("Error with inputs %s and %d", stringvar, intvar); The macro & supporting library code then passes the (possibly varargs) formatted message into a database along with the source file, source line, user name, and time. The same data is also stuffed into a data structure for later reporting to the user. Does anybody have C# code snippets or pointers to examples that do this basic error reporting/logging? Edit: At the time I asked this question I was really new to .NET and was unaware of System.Diagnostics.Trace. System.Diagnostics.Trace was what I needed at that time. Since then I have used log4net on projects where the logging requirements were larger and more complex. Just edit that 500 line XML configuration file and log4net will do everything you will ever need :)

• How do you move an admin menu item in Magento

  I currently have an extension that I created and it currently sits inside of its own top level menu. I would like to move it so that the item would appear inside of the Customers menu. Does anyone know how to do this? It looks like this is handled inside the extensions config.xml file. The code that I have for it right now is as follows: <menu> <testimonials module="testimonials"> <title>Testimonials</title> <sort_order>71</sort_order> <children> <items module="testimonials"> <title>Manage Items</title> <sort_order>0</sort_order> <action>testimonials/adminhtml_testimonials</action> </items> </children> </testimonials> </menu> I tried changing the title element to Customers and it just created a duplicate Customers menu. I thinking about this from the standpoint where I want to make it easier to bring new hires up to speed quickly by having all this on a checklist we follow when setting them up, and then while I'm at it making it easier for the new hires or existing team members to bring new powerful toolkits and ideas into the environment without disrupting things. • Why does Hibernate 2nd level cache only cache queries within a session?

  Using a named query in our application and with ehcache as the provider, it seems that the query results are tied to the session within the cache. Why are the cached queries not usable outside of the (relatively short-lived) sessions?

  I'm trying to get a list of calendar objects from exchange and sorting them based on subject. The part of of getting the objects just based on date and sorting out via subject is in "code" is now working, but i want to do a sort on subject in the "sql" first, but im unable to make it work ( Currently getting error from exchange saying the query is wrong. • IE6 transparency+radio button can't be clicked

  IE6: when I place a partially transparent image in a div, the radio buttons in that div that overlap the non-transparent pixels of the image become unclickable. This bug might, or might not, be related to the IE6 links transparency bug, but I'm not knowledgable enough to grasp any resemblence. Have I done something wrong? Or how can I circumvent? Is there some other option apart from removing the _filter:progid?
