• Moonlight extension not working with new Firefox versions

  The web browser I use is Firefox (currently in version 8 in Oneiric). According the Compatibility Check information the Moonlight extension is not compatible with FF8. Anyway, I enabled this extension using the AddOn Compatibility Reporter. And, actually, I cannot watch Silverlight streams in an acceptable way: the video gets stuck, the HD keeps buffering (I guess), so I have to close the window. Does anybody know if there is a way to fix this or a suitable alternative? I'm looking for something which is fully supported and mantained.

• Javascript: Safely upload a client data file

  I'm (still) working on a template-based XML editing program. It's a GUI-based XML editor that only allows users to add certain tags and attributes based off the requirements. You can see the current version here for an idea. Now, I'd like to allow users to upload their own data templates, but I'm concerned about potential XSS hacks. Currently, the template file is in Javascript object literal notation, which unsurprisingly is a security nightmare if the user can upload their own. I was thinking of using XML instead, but is there an even better alternative?

• PXE booting on old computer

  So my computer is not working - the disk is totally cleared, I've deleted GRUB and PLOP which I used to install new system, because CD-Rom is broken and BIOS is old (whole computer is old, it's Sony Vaio PCG-GR250) so it won't allow me to do it via USB and I got no floppy drive :) the only way is to PXE boot PLOP and install Linux from USB after PLOP has been opened. (I'm not a specialist but that's how I see it) I'm using Mac OS X 10.9 and I followed number of tutorials how to set up TFTP and DHCP server and I got PLOP here, but when I boot up with PXE it says that it found DHCP but TFTP timed out. Any help or alternative way of rescuing old laptop? Thanks in advance!

• Mirroring Ubuntu on several systems in a computer lab

  I am working in a new refugee school where the only Internet service available is a slow satellite connection. We are about to set up a computer lab (already have desktop systems and am about to install Ubuntu on them). I'm a newbie when it comes to Linux, but it seems a better alternative than pirated copies of Windows. I'd like to set up one Ubuntu system, and then mirror that system on perhaps ten to twenty other systems (all of which would be on an ethernet network). I expect to have an internet connection on the one system that I set up, but then it may be difficult to have enough bandwidth to go through all the same steps on the other ten systems. Can I set up the other ten or twenty computers to get all of their updates/upgrades/configuration from one master system? Can I also set things up so that students cannot change the configuration, install new programs, etc.? Appreciate any help you can give. -- Harvey

• Automatically select headphones when plugged in

  When I plug headphones into my desktop computer, they are not automatically selected for output, instead all sound still goes through my S/PDIF output to the stereo. The headphones alternative is added in the sound settings, and I have to manually select it as output device. $ cat /proc/asound/pcm 00-00: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : playback 1 : capture 1 00-01: ALC898 Digital : ALC898 Digital : playback 1 00-02: ALC898 Analog : ALC898 Analog : capture 2 I have done a Google search, as well as search askubuntu.com, but none of the answers in the hits I found seems to help. Also, after listening with the headphones and then unplug them, the previous output is not automatically selected, so I have no sound at all then. I have to manually select the correct output in the settings.

  I am new to server side development and am currently learning node.js. What sort of networking information should I be familiar with to allow for a smooth learning curve with server side development. Could anyone provide resources pertaining to the information required to get into server programming? To give you a better idea of my standpoint: I do not know how a server interacts with a database [Q: How does a NoSQL database, or database in general, communicate with a server?] I am unsure of how a web stack works [Q: I have heard of LAMP but do not know how Apache, MySQL, and PHP interact. Hopefully this applies to other stacks as well. How do the components of a stack work together? Also, is a MEAN stack an alternative, or is it completely irrelevant to this] I have trivial knowledge of internet protocol [however extremely inefficient][Q: What resources are beneficial when learning about networking, and how much/what knowledge should I acquire to program on the server side] I am unsure of what I am unsure of concerning networking information necessary to start development Information on how the client-server model works would be greatly appreciated

  While the default styles for most websites are nice there may be times when you would love to tweak how things look. See how easy it can be to change how websites look with the Stylish Extension for Firefox. Note: Scripts from Userstyles.org can also be added to Greasemonkey if you have it installed. Getting Started After installing the extension you will be presented with a first run page. You may want to keep it open so that you can browse directly to the Userstyles.org website using the link in the upper left corner. In the lower right corner you will have a new Status Bar Icon. If you have used Greasemonkey before this icon works a little differently. It will be faded out due to no user style scripts being active at the moment. You can use either a left or right click to access the Context Menu. The user style script management section is also added into your Add-ons Management Window instead of being separate. When you reach the user style scripts homepage you can choose to either learn more about the extension & scripts or… Start hunting for lots of user style script goodness. There will be three convenient categories to get you jump-started if you wish. You could also conduct a search if you have something specific in mind. Here is some information directly from the website provided for your benefit. Notice the reference to using these scripts with Greasemonkey… This section shows you how the scripts have been categorized and can give you a better idea of how to search for something more specific. Finding & Installing Scripts For our example we decided to look at the Updated Styles Section”first. Based on the page number listing at the bottom there are a lot of scripts available to look through. Time to refine our search a little bit… Using the drop-down menu we selected site styles and entered Yahoo in the search blank. Needless to say 5 pages was a lot easier to look through than 828. We decided to install the Yahoo! Result Number Script. When you do find a script (or scripts) that you like simply click on the Install with Stylish Button. A small window will pop up giving you the opportunity to preview, proceed with the installation, edit the code, or cancel the process. Note: In our example the Preview Function did not work but it may be something particular to the script or our browser’s settings. If you decide to do some quick editing the window shown above will switch over to this one. To return to the previous window and install the user style script click on the Switch to Install Button. After installing the user style the green section in the script’s webpage will actually change to this message… Opening up the Add-ons Manager Window shows our new script ready to go. The script worked perfectly when we conducted a search at Yahoo…the Status Bar Icon also changed from faded out to full color (another indicator that everything is running nicely). Conclusion If you prefer a custom look for your favorite websites then you can have a lot of fun experimenting with different user style scripts. • Better drivers for SiS 650/740 integrated video?

  I installed Xubuntu 10.10 on an old box today and the graphical performance is horrid. Alternative drivers? The additional drivers tool shows nothing. I'm specifically interested in improving Java's Java2D rendering speed, because I'll be running a "stat screen" written in that language on it.

• Workshop in Denver canceled - thanks to hurricane Isaac

  Yesterday Roy did start his journey on time to travel to Denver, CO for today's Upgrade and Migration Workshop.  But unfortunately due to the remnants of  hurricane Issac moving up the East Coast and scrambling up flight schedules Roy's flight from NYC to Denver got canceled after a 3 hour delay leaving Manchester, NH, and there was no option to arrive in Denver this morning on time. • Storing lots of large strings with frequent "appends" and few reads

  In my current project, I need to store a very long ASCII string to each instance of a given object. This string will receive an 2 appends per minute and will not be retrieved so frequently. The worst case scenario is a 5-10MB string. I'll have thousands of instances of my object and I'm worried that storing all those strings in the filesystem would not be optimal, but I can't think of a better solution. Can anyone suggest an alternative? Maybe a key-value store? In this case, which one? Any other thoughts?

I know I could use a second parameter to the function and use a if, but this feels more fun (imo) and might prevent branch prediction (I'm no expert in that field). So, is it a valid practice, and/or is there a better approach?

  I am developing a site with a mobile version and am trying to figure the appropriate way to manage the URLs for search engines. So far I've considered: Having a separate mobile site (m.example.com) with rel="canonical" links to the regular site. Putting both the mobile site and full site on one URL (example.com), and doing user agent sniffing. Another opinion: Spencer: "If you have a mobile site at a separate location or URL, you should 301 redirect each and every mobile page to its corresponding page on your main website. • After Installation Whole Disk Encryption? 12.04

  I know some fragments of this question have been asked in previous posts and I have reviewed them - however I have a more thorough question... I did not choose to do whole disk encryption when I used the alternative installer to install my 12.04 distro. I thought that truecypt worked with linux on system drive (whole disk) encryption - but sadly found out it did not. I have totally tweaked and pimped out my installation and I do not want to have to go back and "install" to just get whole disk encryption. Any alternatives that anyone knows of? I don't want just /home... I want the whole system installation protected and made secure so that when I boot I get a password to unencrypt.

• What is needed for a networked home printer?

  I've seen this question: Home network printer recommendations but I think I'm asking something more basic. I'm not really familiar with networked printers or how they work or what they do really. What I'd like is to have a printer that is accessible to anyone connected to my home network, without having to plug into the printer itself. An alternative setup might to be to have a printer that is always hooked up to one computer, like a desktop, that is almost always on and allows other computers connected on the network to print to it as well. I believe the first option is called a networked printer and the second is printer sharing. But again I'm new to this so I don't really know the details or if I'm using the correct terminology. I was wondering if someone might be able to shed some light on this and let me know what is needed for either of these setup. Thanks.

• Python 2.4 on Ubuntu 12.04

  I want to develop a Python application on Ubuntu 12.04 using python 2.4, but since the default version of python on ubuntu is 2.7. I cannot get the libraries and packages to work for python 2.4. I have tried using virtualenv but even with virtualenv I was not successful in installing packages for python2.4. So I would like to know if there is any reliable method to get python 2.4 to work with Ubuntu. I know that I shouldnt mess with the default version of python on ubuntu and hence I am looking for a better alternative. Thanks in advance.

  We have a site primarily targeted at the UK market, and are adding a US-market alternative. As per Google's recommendations: To indicate to Google that you want the German version of the page to be served to searchers using Google in German, the en-us version to searchers using google.com in English, and the en-gb version to searchers using google.co.uk in English, use rel="alternate" hreflang="x" to identify alternate language versions. Which gives us: <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-gb" href="http://www.example.com/page.html" /> <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-us" href="http://www.example.com/us/page.html" /> We do get enquiries from other areas of the world - particularly where there are expat communities (Dubai, UAE, Portugal etc). By adding the above tags, is there a risk that Google will only surface our site for UK and US search users? Do we need to specify a catch-all that will default all other searches to our UK site?

  I studied algorithms in a book Cormen & al. "Introduction to algorithms". In the fourth printing, on the page 43 defines O(g(n))={f(n):there exists positive constants c and n_0 s.t. 0<=f(n)<=cg(n) for all n=n_0} I reported this as a bug in the book www-site because this leads to notation like n=O(n^2) and suggested alternative given in http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?f=296&t=31517&start=20 . It looks like my bug report has not been accepted. Why the programmers won't renew the notation?
