• Trobleshooting extremely slow opening times in Win7 for documents on Win2k8 server

  Hello. It's hard even to describe my problem. It seems there's only problem with extreme slow openings (up to 10 minutes) on Windows 7 (on XP things works fine) for files that are stored on Windows Server 2008. And now what I discovered up till now. If I open (some files, not all, not allways) .doc and .xls files with doubleclicking it takes up to 10 minutes to finaly open the file. In that time, file seems to be locked for all other users. If I cancel opening, file remains locked for some time. Owner on that files is the one who last wrote changes in them. If I change the owner to larger group, which I am member of file gets opened super fast. When opened file can be saved normaly and fast. That file reopens fast. One other user reports that there is only problem when opening the files for the first time in a day. When he openes first file he has no problems with other files at all (or so he says). He also states that when accessing files from home via VPN he has no such problems with files. And now: anybody has a clue where to start looking? I suppose that is misconfiguration problem. But where? File system? Permissions? DFS? VMWare network config? My setup is as follows: Physical server: HP Prolian ML350 G6 Virtual host: VMWare ESXi 4 Guest: Windows Server 2008 Standard Files are accessed via DFS shares. Please help me. Thanks. Mazupan

• Windows 7 boot animation slows down startup by default?

  I just upgraded my HDD to an SSD drive. I am running a completely fresh install and enjoy the short boot time. I tweaked the startup to be as fast as I could by removing unneeded apps and such. Nor am I running a solid desktop background (which causes a 30-sec startup delay). I have a 2.1ghz 64 bit laptop with 4 gigs of ram, so it's not a liquid-cooled speed monster, but I checked some super high end PC boot vids on YouTube and noticed that they startup in almost the same time as my machine. I also noticed that the glowing Windows 7 animation plays all the way no matter how fast the PC is. I turned off the animation, and the startup time is unchanged. I turned on verbose startup info and noticed that it runs until the very end, where it looks like it just sits there for no reason waiting for something to happen for a few seconds. So now I think that the Windows 7 startup animation has a timer built into it that forces the computer to wait for no other reason than to play the full animation. Super-fast XP boot vids on YouTube seem to start much faster (and not just because they "have less to load"). Am I imagining things? My question is: How can I turn off not just the animation, but the timer for the animation. Here is a vid that tipped me off, I have no relation to the poster. • Why Are SPF Records Failing?

  Ok I've been going through various different sites, resources and topics here trying to figure out what is wrong with my SPF records but no matter what I do they don't seem to pass. Here's what I have "v=spf1 +a +mx +ip4:217.78.0.92 +ip4:217.78.0.95 -all" I've tried multiple different tools to check my spf records, some give me a pass, some don't. But I can't send mail to certain google app accounts, they just bounce back all the time which is very annoying. Anyone got any ideas? I have noticed that the source IP address is not the IPV4 addresses I've defined, but Cpanel wouldn't let me add that address into it.. And here's the result of tests I'm getting back from port25.com. I'm running WHM by the way and have enabled spf and dkim. • Windows OS level file open event trigger

  Colleagues, I have need to run a script/program on certain basic OS level events. In particular when a file in Windows is opened. The open may be read-only or to edit, and may be initiated by a number of means, either from windows explorer (open or ), be selected from a viewing or editing application from the native file chooser, or drag-n-drop into an editing or viewing application. Further, i need the trigger to "hold" the event from completing the action until the runtime on the program has completed. The event handler program may return a pass state, or fail state. If fail state has been returned, then the event must disallow the initially requested action. Lastly, I need to add to the file in question a property or attribute that will contain metadata that will be used by the above event trigger handler program to make a determination as to the pass/fail condition that will ultimately determine if the user is permitted to open the file. If MediaElement does not provide such functionality, how could it be implemented or what other control could I use?   I have 4 string variables name, quest, favorite_color, speed that might be empty. I want to concatenate them all together, putting spaces between those that aren't empty. • Windows Batch Scripting Issue - Quoting Variables containing spaces

  So here's my issue: I want to use %cd% so a user can execute a script anywhere they want to place it, but if %cd% contains spaces, then it will fail (regardless of quotes). If I hardcode the path, it will function with quotes, but if it is a variable, it will fail. Fails: (if %cd% contains spaces) "%cd%\Testing.bat" Works: "C:\Program Files\Testing.bat" Any ideas?

  hi, I hope following explanation will make sense because it's a weird problem we're facing and hard to describe. We have a maven project which gets build in hudson and that contains some unit tests where dates are used and asserted. The hudson server runs on solaris. Now, occasionally (like 30% of the times) the unit tests using dates fail because 3,5 hours are deducted from the specified time in the unit test and hence asserts start failing. The other 70% everything works fine although nothing at all changed in the code and we run the hudson job several times an hour. Especially, we can't think of a single reason why the tests sometimes pass and sometimes fail without changing any code nor hudson or server setting. Also, we run the maven install with cobertura which means that the unit tests are run twice.   Just notice that after updating to Safari 5 (mac) all the flash applications that respond to resize events got sluggish. try: http://www.tutorio.com/media/flash/liquid-demo.html this works great with firefox 3.6.3, Chrome can deal with it fine, although not so fast as Firefox, but new Safari gives a awful experience, distorting all content if you do fast resizing. Any ideas why is this happening / and how can I get a better performance with safari browsers?

• Using jQuery to Dynamically Insert Into List Alphabetically

  I have two ordered lists next to each other. When I take a node out of one list I want to insert it alphabetically into the other list. The catch is that I want to take just the one element out and place it back in the other list without refreshing the entire list. The strange thing is that when I insert into the list on the right, it works fine, but when I insert back into the list on the left, the order never comes out right. I have also tried reading everything into an array and sorting it there just in case the children() method isn't returning things in the order they are displayed, but I still get the same results.   I have several domain names registered, each a slight variant of each other. E.g, fastcar.com fast-car.com fastcar.co.uk fast-car.co.uk etc.. I don't wish to be penalized for duplicate content or spammy links by any of the major search engines. Should I park them all directly on the main domain I wish to promote, 301 redirect them to the main domain or not use them at all? Thanks

  I understand the basics of this search, however the beta cut-off part is confusing me, when beta <= value of alphabeta I can either return beta, break, or continue the loop. return beta doesn't seem to work properly at all, it returns the wrong players move for a different state of the board (further into the search tree) break seems to work correctly, it is very fast but it seems a bit TOO fast continue is a lot slower than break but it seems more correct...I'm guessing this is the right way but pseudocode on google all use 'break' but because this is pseudocode I'm not sure what they mean by 'break'

• Can I ensure all tests contain an assertion in test/unit?

  With test/unit, and minitest, is it possible to fail any test that doesn't contain an assertion, or would monkey-patching be required (for example, checking if the assertion count increased after each test was executed)? Background: I shouldn't write unit tests without assertions - at a minimum, I should use assert_nothing_raised if I'm smoke testing to indicate that I'm smoke testing. Usually I write tests that fail first, but I'm writing some regression tests. Alternatively, I could supply an incorrect expected value to see if the test is comparing the expected and actual value.

I am mostly focussing on affine transformations and matrix inversions, so i do not need anything too sophisticated or bloated. Primarily I would like something that is very fast (using SSE perhaps?), with a clean API and (hopefully) prepackaged by many of the unix package management systems. Note this is for C not for C++. • Dynamic data-entry value store

  I'm creating a data-entry application where users are allowed to create the entry schema. My first version of this just created a single table per entry schema with each entry spanning a single or multiple columns (for complex types) with the appropriate data type. This allowed for "fast" querying (on small datasets as I didn't index all columns) and simple synchronization where the data-entry was distributed on several databases. I'm not quite happy with this solution though; the only positive thing is the simplicity... I can only store a fixed number of columns. I need to create indexes on all columns. I need to recreate the table on schema changes. Some of my key design criterias are: Very fast querying (Using a simple domain specific query language) Writes doesn't have to be fast Many concurrent users Schemas will change often Schemas might contain many thousand columns The data-entries might be distributed and needs syncronization. Preferable MySQL and SQLite - Databases like DB2 and Oracle is out of the question. Using .Net/Mono I've been thinking of a couple of possible designs, but none of them seems like a good choice. Solution 1: Union like table containing a Type column and one nullable column per type. This avoids joins, but will definitly use a lot of space. Solution 2: Key/value store. All values are stored as string and converted when needed. Also use a lot of space, and of course, I hate having to convert everything to string. Solution 3: Use an xml database or store values as xml. Without any experience I would think this is quite slow (at least for the relational model unless there is some very good xpath support). I also would like to avoid an xml database as other parts of the application fits better as a relational model, and being able to join the data is helpful. I cannot help to think that someone has solved (some of) this already, but I'm unable to find anything. Not quite sure what to search for either... I know market research is doing something like this for their questionnaires, but there are few open source implementations, and the ones I've found doesn't quite fit the bill. PSPP has much of the logic I'm thinking of; primitive column types, many columns, many rows, fast querying and merging. Too bad it doesn't work against a database.. And of course... I don't need 99% of the provided functionality, but a lot of stuff not included. I'm not sure this is the right place to ask such a design related question, but I hope someone here has some tips, know of any existing work, or can point me to a better place to ask such a question.
