• Force failover a Cisco ASA

  I have two ASA in a lan state primary\secondary configuration. None of them have "failover active" or "no failover active" in their configuration. Would it be proper to failover in a manner such as: Log into console of primary unit and issue "failover lan state secondary", log into the console of the original secondary unit and issue "failover lan state primary". To fail back simply reverse the process or Log into the console of the primary unit and issue "no failover active", log into the console of the original secondary unit and issue "failover active". To fail back issue "failover active" on the original primary (now secondary) unit, and "no failover active" on the now primary unit. I do not like the second method because it adds configuration directives that were not in place before. Will the first method work?

• Out of sync audio / video in 10.6.2 Snow leopard

  I have a PC with OSX86 on it. (10.6.2) Under Leopard my videos worked great, but now with VLC the audio is all garbled and video is way too fast. In Quicktime X video is too fast. MPlayer OSX Extended plays videos fine, but doesn't support many codecs. I have a Geforce 9800 GTX with qe ci ocl... If theres no solution, then are thereany other players for osx that support a lot of codecs? I don't like Windows so that's not an option. Thanks

• Does an SMTP request contain host header information (or just the IP of the targeted SMTP server)?

  We are using an external commercial smtp server for our newsletters (sending them through .NET components), and they offer two smtp URLs - smtp.critsend.com and fast.critsend.com -, and the second one is reserved for sending singular emails, the first one for bulk. Using nslookup shows that both resolve to the same 4 IP addresses (fast.critsend.com being an Alias). Question: (how) is it possible for the smtp relay to distinguish between different names? Is there something in the headers that can be compared to host headers in http protocol (I didn't find any intelligible information for a non-sysadmins)? The reason I'm asking is because we would like to use one of the IPs in our newsletter script (which works) rather than a name (in order to save DNS requests), and we are wondering about potential problems.

  Assume an office of people, they want to limit HTTP downloads to a max of 40% bandwidth of their internet connection speed so that it doesn't block other traffic. We say "it's not supported in your firewall", and they say the inevitable line "we used to be able to do it with our Netgear/DLink/DrayTek". Thinking about it, a download is like this: HTTP GET request Server sends file data as TCP packets Client acknowledges receipt of TCP packets Repeat until download finished. The speed is determined by how fast the server sends data to you, and how fast you acknowledge it. So, to limit download speed, you have two choices: 1) Instruct the server to send data to you more slowly - and I don't think there's any protocol feature to request that in TCP or HTTP. 2) Acknowledge packets more slowly by limiting your upload speed, and also ruin your upload speed. How do devices do this limiting? Is there a standard way?

• Is there a program that compares image files and reports if they are exactly the same pixel-wise?

  I'm making a regression testing suite for some rendering software. I need to be able to load an image file (PNG or TGA, ideally) and compare the pixel values to a standard approved image. I'd like it to be command line driven too, so I can make a batch file to run all the tests. All the compare utilities I have found so far either show differences (I just need it to fail if they are different) or compare all the bytes, meaning that meta-data will trigger a fail. Anyone got any suggestions? I am not a coder, and can only barely cobble a batch script together. Thanks for any suggestions.

  I've a fujitsu lifebook S7220, it's been a while since i try to configure it to use a dual head with centos 5.4 x86_64. Everytime I try, the xserver crash... I've got an intel chipset mobile 4 serie (GMA 4500MHD, if I recall good!)   Can you help me with understanding of reliability of network adapters. Most of the time servers do have at least 2 NIC's bonded to provide sort of a HA for it. So in case of one NIC fails, the second would still do the job. I wonder which factors work when you use network adapters. I know that, the most important and weakest part of any computer system is: storage (i.e HDD). but how reliable actually network adapters are? There are more expensive ones, and cheaper adapters. In which cases do they actually fail? In what circumstances. May it be a intensive usage of them Time when it's on In your experience how often you found yourself changing NIC's due to their fail? Or just what's the typical lifetime of commodity NIC's? thanks.

• Why is hibernation still used?

  I've never quite understood the original purpose of the Hibernation power state in Windows. I understand how it works, what processes take place, and what happens when you boot back up from Hibernate, but I've never truly understood why it's used. With today's technology, most notably with SSDs, RAM and CPUs becoming faster and faster, a cold boot on a clean/efficient Windows installation can be pretty fast (for some people, mere seconds from pushing the power button). Standby is even faster, sometimes instantaneous. Even SATA drives from 5-6 years ago can accomplish these fast boot times. Hibernation seems pointless to me when modern technology is considered, but perhaps there are applications that I'm not considering. What was the original purpose behind hibernation, and why do people still use it? Edit: I rescind my comment about hibernation being obsolete, as it obviously has very practical applications to laptops and mobile PCs, considering the power restrictions. I was mostly referring to hibernation being used on a desktop.

• window.requestFileSystem fails/events firing multiple times in PhoneGap Cordova 3

  cordova 3.1.0-0.2.0 Droid Razr M Android 4.1.2 Windows 7 New to PhoneGap/Cordova. Running one of the filesystem demos from http://docs.phonegap.com/en/3.1.0/cordova_file_file.md.html#File. Using "cordova run android" to compile the code and run it on the phone attached via USB. Problem #1: When the app first starts I get alert("1") twice and then nothing else. Problem #2: When I kick of the code via the button onclick I get the following alert pattern: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 6, 5, 7, 4, 6, 5, 7. Some of that makes sense based on the code flow but most of them are firing twice. I'm suspecting problem #2 is being caused by some asynchronous calls hanging out from the first attempt but no matter how long I wait those events don't fire until I kick of the code via the button. So why is the requestFileSystem call failing even though it is waiting for deviceready and why is the other code getting intermingled? Like what technical breakthrough was required to get transfer speeds that fast? Was it cost? capacities of computer? like they couldn't read the data fast enough? Although USB is still well below hard drive transfer speeds engineering breakthrough? They found some new material which could transfer at a faster rate? Was this in the cable itself? • HDFS datanode startup fails when disks are full

  Our HDFS cluster is only 90% full but some datanodes have some disks that are 100% full. That means when we mass reboot the entire cluster some datanodes completely fail to start with a message like this: 2013-10-26 03:58:27,295 ERROR org.apache.hadoop.hdfs.server.datanode.DataNode: java.io.IOException: Mkdirs failed to create /mnt/local/sda1/hadoop/dfsdata/blocksBeingWritten Only three have to fail this way before we start experiencing real data loss. Currently we workaround it by decreasing the amount of space reserved for the root user but we'll eventually run out. We also run the re-balancer pretty much constantly, but some disks stay stuck at 100% anyway. Changing the dfs.datanode.failed.volumes.tolerated setting is not the solution as the volume has not failed. Any ideas?

  I am having trouble navigating through files on OS X. That is, creating files, copying, moving, and so on. I am currently using the Finder, but the act of clicking with the mouse is not very efficient. Acessing a deep folder takes a considerable amount of time and you'll have to know it's entire path. When I try to use the command line it is even worse. Going to a folder requires at least typing it's entire path with the 'cd' command; and, when you are there, you don't have full control over it. For example, how would you move 3 specific files to another folder? Some text editors offer a 'fuzzy search' function that allows a very fast form of jumping through files. What is a fast, efficient way to navigate through files on OS X?

• Why am I getting 'undefined method' exceptions when executing 'run_list add', 'run_list remove' and 'rackspace server delete'?

  [Originally posted this to opscode forum, got no response] I’m testing out a free hosted chef-server account and multiple subcommands are failing with ‘Unexpected Errors’. Perhaps my version and the server version are incompatible? OS: Ubuntu 12.04LTS Local Chef: 10.12.0 (Installed through gem) Local Ruby: 1.8.7 Also, the workstation machine has been manually configured, but the client(s) I’ve been experimenting with are launched with the Rackspace plugin (using ‘knife rackspace server create…’) The problem commands seem to fail when talking to the host chef-server, however, before it ever tries to modify the client, so I don’t believe that’s where the problem exists. The virtual-servers that are launched by ‘knife rackspace server create’ are launched properly but then deleting them with knife fails. If I include a recipe in the run_list when I create the server, the recipe is properly added to the run_list. If I try to add it later or remove the one that there server was initialized with, those commands fail. • WinXP on VPC - Unable to change the way users log on or off

  On my Win7 computer, I have setup a new Win-XP VPC. In the VPC window, when I click Ctrl+Alt+Del, it shows me Windows Task Manager. As per MS KB [ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281980 ], we can change this behavior to show the regular Windows Security window. But while making this change, I am getting the following error: User Accounts Fast User Switching cannot be turned off from a remote connection to this computer. Log on to the computer locally to turn off Fast User Switching. OK Is there any way I can fix this setting?

  This is for people familiar with the ISP scene in Salt Lake. Also, UTOPIA is not available in my neighborhood yet. I'm looking for comparisons between Comcast, Qwest, and especially other providers I'm not aware of. While I will have online backup (of course!), I want to host some things from my own home at the start of my business. Once money starts flowing in, I will move to a hosted provider, but in the meantime I would like a provider which provides fast (1+ mb/s at least) upload speeds (fast download a given), a static IP, and especially a reasonable price.

• The speed of copying a file from a PC to a USB Flash drive started at 30MB/s and decreased to 5.8 MB

  If I copy a 8GB file from the PC to a USB Flash Drive, the speed will start at around 30 MB/s... maybe 28 MB/s, and then gradually, after a minute, it will go down to 15 MB/s and finally settle down at 5.8 MB/s. But I thought if it is a hard drive, then probably there is the RAM cache and also the internal hard drive cache, and will make the copying of file from PC to hard drive appear fast at first. But for a USB Flash drive, there should be no internal cache for the USB Flash drive itself. Is there a RAM cache for it, so that's why the initial copying seems so fast?

  For some reason, when I go to links the pages seem slow and heavy. It also has a lot of lag spikes between page loads. Basically it seems to freeze then load it all at once fast. I'm currently using Firefox 25. But when I use the same Chrome version, it seems to be very fast and smooth page loading. The CPU it takes on average is about 400,000k. • Installation fails after period of time

  I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, Ultimate. I'm running into a problem where, if my computer is on long enough, I am unable to install any software. For example, if I reboot and try to install something, for the most part, it will succeed. if I try and install something after a few hours/days, it will always fail. Sometimes stating that "a previous install failed..." or "an install is already taking place..." even though there is nothing being installed. This also seems to be making my Windows updates fail at a pretty regular rate. Any ideas?

However, VNC over the internet is incredibly slow. Even at 256 colors and lower, with Aero turned off, it is unbearably slow. I recently used Ammyy Admin to connect to do something requiring a quick reaction time. Ammyy was really fast, with almost no lag, and it was running in full color with Aero on! How can I make VNC faster, like Ammyy is? I'd use Ammyy, but I would probably run into the 15hr/month limit pretty quickly. Any suggestions? [EDIT] I'm currently using UltraVNC.

• How can I delete faster? Word boundary backspace?

  I like to type fast. I'm a chronic delete-keyer. I will type first, re-think the output later and hit delete. It seems I'm addicted to always doing something fast. Anyways, I have to tap the delete button very often. Is there a way to do a backspace to word boundary that's native? In a chat box, I can use alt+shift+left to get a word, cmd shift left to get the whole line, etc. but I can't do that in a python shell for example. Any ideas?

• Server drives: 2.5" SCSI less reliable than 3.5" ?

  Just had an HP 2.5" SAS 10k drive fail on a RAID5 array after about 2.5 years. It made me wonder if this was a fluke or an indication that 2.5" drives are less reliable than 3.5" SAS drives. I've had many 3.5" SAS drives running for many years without any issues (knock on wood). I would think that smaller drives would generate less heat and therefore be more reliable, but couldn't find any evidence of this. I realize all drives will eventually fail and that it's a crap shoot with any particular model, but was hoping someone could point out some related studies or comment on the SCSI drive sizes they've found to be most reliable in servers.
