• Who Knows AppWeb HTTP Server And It's Embedded PHP?

  Hi all, on my search for a fast but comfortable web server I dropped into the homepage of EmbedThis(TM) AppWeb(TM) HTTP server. This one has 2 licencse models, GPLv2 and a commercial one with support. On the first view it looks good: the footprint is not too big, it is fast and it has a lot of configuration otions. The most important thing would be a fast PHP execution using a built-in PHP library. Unfortunately this PHP library doesn't include every option, especially "gettext" which one I need for I18N. My target platform is Linux on an embedded device with an ARM based CPU. Does anybody have experiences with the issues mentioned above? Kind regards, Andi

• v8 is too slow for my purpose

  I'm working on a music visualization plugin for libvisual. It's an AVS clone -- AVS being from Winamp. Right now I have a superscope plugin. This element has 4 scripts, and "point" is run at every pixel. You can imagine that it has to be rather fast. The original libvisual avs clone had a JIT compiler that was really fast, but it had some bugs and wasn't fully implemented, so I decided to try v8. Well, v8 is too slow running the compiled script at every pixel. Is there any other script engine that would be pretty fast for this purpose?

  I saw this post on Sitepoint quoting a statement by Rasmus Lerdorf which goes (according to Sitepoint) as follows: "How can you make PHP fast? Well, you can’t" was his quick answer. PHP is simply not fast enough to scale to Yahoo levels. PHP was never meant for those sorts of tasks. "Any script based language is simply not fast enough". To get the speed that is necessary for truly massive web systems you have to use compiled C++ extensions to get true, scaleable architecture. That is what Yahoo does and so do many other PHP heavyweights. Intrigued by the statement (not to mention the fact that up to now, all I was doing in PHP was small database-based apps), I was wondering how I could "use compiled C++ extensions" with PHP. Any ideas or resources?

• Ajax Post Request Returns JSON but Deferred Fails

  I have a cross-domain POST request to http://api.local/user/auth - my API endpoint. I allow Cross Domain requests in my api with CORS. Using Chrome if that makes a difference. I get a valid server JSON response with 200 Status Code but I am using deferreds from a backbone model like so: @model.save() .fail(-> console.log 'sync fail') .success -> console.log 'sync OK' And I consistently get a 'sync fail' instead of the expected 'sync OK' Thoughts?

• Maven - Selenium - Possible to run only one test

  Hi We are using JUnit - Selenium for our web tests. We use Maven to start them and build a surefire report. The test suite is pretty large and takes a while to run and sometimes single tests fail because the browser won't start. I want to be able run a SINGLE test using maven so I retest the tests that fail and update the report. I can use mvn test -Dtest=TESTCLASSNAME to run all the tests in one test class, but this is not good enough since it takes about 10 minutes to run all the tests in our most complicated test classes and it's very likely that some other test will fail (because the browser wont start) and this will mess up my report. I know I can run one test from Eclipse but that is not what I am looking for. Any help on this would be very appriciated

  What's the best way to automate this function? I want to be able to do this in Outlook 2010, (1)select a specific mail account (2)Key in a folder that I am looking for (3)Then have the macro/program fire off an "*" asterisk (4)Then insert the text that I keyed in step one. I am trying to automate the search for a folder hot-keys that already exist. My problem is that I can't type the folder that I am looking for fast enough and all the search programs that I have used are far too slow. The hot-key search is awesome and super fast, I just can't type the folder that I am looking for fast enough. Can this process be automated? • Debug.Assert seems not to work in Mono

  Consider the following C# program: using System; using System.Diagnostics; namespace Test { class MainClass { public static void Main (string[] args) { Debug.Assert(false); Debug.Fail("fail!"); Console.WriteLine ("Hello World!"); } } } When compiling this using: dmcs -debug -d:DEBUG Main.cs and then running it with: mono --debug Main.exe the assertion and fail seem to be ignored. The output is just: Hello World! I checked other related questions on StackOverflow, but I could not find a solution. In particular the solution give in Mono - Debug.Assert does not work does not work. (UPDATE: the update solution does work, see below comments.) I use Mono 2.1.5-1 on Ubuntu 11.10.

• How to make form validation in Django dynamic?

  I'm trying to make a form that handles the checking of a domain: the form should fail based on a variable that was set earlier in another form. Basically, when a user wants to create a new domain, this form should fail if the entered domain exists. When a user wants to move a domain, this form should fail if the entered domain doesn't exist. I've tried making it dynamic overload the initbut couldn't see a way to get my passed variabele to the clean function. I've read that this dynamic validation can be accomplished using a factory method, but maybe someone can help me on my way with this? • Doing a lot of input validation in VB.NET

  I have a form set up where users can enter their booking for a room at my college. I want to validate the user input to avoid SQL injection (my program uses a MS Access database) and also stop numbers and synbols in their name, etc. I can do the validation fine, but there is to be a lot of validation and then methods executed only if all validation tests come back as true. I did have something like this: If txtName.Text = "" Then frmBookErr.SetError(txtName, "Name field cannot be left blank.") fail = 1 Else frmBookErr.SetError(txtName, "") fail = 0 End If And then check the fail variable, but it obviously gets overridden later in the form if one of the validation tests come back as true. Can anyone provide some input into this? Thanks.

• MySQL Update Trigger with Conditions

  I have a PHP app that inserts 'Pass', 'Fail' or 'NA' into fields TEST1, TEST2, TEST3... through TEST15. I have a field called OVERALL that needs to be automatically updated with 'FAIL' if any of the TEST1-TEST15 fields contains 'Fail'. I'm pretty sure I need to use a trigger containing the update statement and either CASE or IF, but I haven't been able to nail down the exact syntax. Can anyone please help a MySQL noob? I'm using MySQL Server version: 5.1.63-0+squeeze1 (Debian).

• In XHR, is it possible to distinguish network errors from cross-origin errors?

  http://www.w3.org/TR/access-control/ Reading the CORS spec linked above, it seems to be the case that it's impossible to reliably distinguish between a generic "network error" and a cross-origin access denied error. From the spec: If there is a network error Apply the network error steps. Perform a resource sharing check. If it returns fail, apply the network error steps. http://www.w3.org/TR/access-control/#simple-cross-origin-request0 In my testing, I couldn't locate any features of Firefox's implementation that seem to indicate that the resource sharing check definitely failed. It just switches readyState to 4 and sets status to 0. Ultimately I'd like the ability to pass a success callback, a general fail callback, and an optional cross-origin fail callback, to my function. Thanks for any help or insight.

How can I do this? • Are there any language agnostic unit testing frameworks?

  I have always been skeptical of rewriting working code - porting code is no exception to this. However, with the advent of TDD and automated testing it is much more reasonable to rewrite and refactor code. Does anyone know if there is a TDD tool that can be used for porting old code? Ideally you could do the following: Write up language agnostic unit tests for the old code that pass (or fail if you find bugs!). Run unit tests on your other code base that fail. Write code in your new language that passes the tests without looking at the old code. The alternative would be to split step 1 into "Write up unit tests in language 1" and "Port unit tests to language 2", which significantly increases effort required and is difficult to justify if the old code base is going to stop being maintained after the port (that is, you don't get the benefit of continuous integration on this code base). EDIT: It's worth noting this question on StackOverflow.

• Permission denied error when trying to install with wubi

  I run into problem when tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 on Windows 7 using wubi installer . It downloads the image for sometime and ends up with the error that says Permission denied: for more details see the log file In the log it seems to be like DownloadError: Problem connecting to tracker - urlopen error (10060, 'Operation timed out') but my network is good and I checked it. Tried using wubi several times, but ends up with same problem. • AspNetCompatibility in WCF Services &ndash; easy to trip up

  This isn’t the first time I’ve hit this particular wall: I’m creating a WCF REST service for AJAX callbacks and using the WebScriptServiceHostFactory host factory in the service: <%@ ServiceHost Language="C#" Service="WcfAjax.BasicWcfService" CodeBehind="BasicWcfService.cs" Factory="System.ServiceModel.Activation.WebScriptServiceHostFactory" %>   to avoid all configuration. Because of the Factory that creates the ASP.NET Ajax compatible format via the custom factory implementation I can then remove all of the configuration settings that typically get dumped into the web.config file. However, I do want ASP.NET compatibility so I still leave in: <system.serviceModel> <serviceHostingEnvironment aspNetCompatibilityEnabled="true"/> </system.serviceModel> in the web.config file. This option allows you access to the HttpContext.Current object to effectively give you access to most of the standard ASP.NET request and response features. This is not recommended as a primary practice but it can be useful in some scenarios and in backwards compatibility scenerios with ASP.NET AJAX Web Services. Now, here’s where things get funky. Assuming you have the setting in web.config, If you now declare a service like this: [ServiceContract(Namespace = "DevConnections")] #if DEBUG [ServiceBehavior(IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults = true)] #endif public class BasicWcfService (or by using an interface that defines the service contract) you’ll find that the service will not work when an AJAX call is made against it. You’ll get a 500 error and a System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException System error. Worse even with the IncludeExceptionDetailInFaults enabled you get absolutely no indication from WCF what the problem is. So what’s the problem?  The issue is that once you specify aspNetCompatibilityEnabled=”true” in the configuration you *have to* specify the AspNetCompatibilityRequirements attribute and one of the modes that enables or at least allows for it. You need either Required or Allow: [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Required)] without it the service will simply fail without further warning. It will also fail if you set the attribute value to NotAllowed. The following also causes the service to fail as above: [AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode = AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.NotAllowed)] This is not totally unreasonable but it’s a difficult issue to debug especially since the configuration setting is global – if you have more than one service and one requires traditional ASP.NET access and one doesn’t then both must have the attribute specified. This is one reason why you’d want to avoid using this functionality unless absolutely necessary. WCF REST provides some basic access to some of the HTTP features after all, although what’s there is severely limited. I also wish that ServiceActivation errors would provide more error information. • First impressions of Scala

  I have an idea that it may be possible to predict build success/failure based on commit data. Why Scala? It’s a JVM language, has lots of powerful type features, and it has a linear algebra library which I’ll need later. Project definition and build Neither maven or the scala build tool (sbt) are completely satisfactory. This maven **archetype** (what .Net folks would call a VS project template) mvn archetype:generate `-DarchetypeGroupId=org.scala-tools.archetypes `-DarchetypeArtifactId=scala-archetype-simple `-DremoteRepositories=http://scala-tools.org/repo-releases `-DgroupId=org.SW -DartifactId=BuildBreakPredictor gets you started right away with “hello world” code, unit tests demonstrating a number of different testing approaches, and even a ready made `.gitignore` file - nice! But the Scala version is behind at v2.8, and more seriously, compiling and testing was painfully slow. So much that a rapid edit – test – edit cycle was not practical. So Lab49 colleague Steve Levine tells me that I can either adjust my pom to use fsc – the fast scala compiler, or use sbt. Sbt has some nice features It’s fast – it uses fsc by default It has a continuous mode, so  `> ~test` will compile and run your unit test each time you save a file It’s can consume (and produce) Maven 2 dependencies the build definition file can be much shorter than the equivalent pom (about 1/5 the size, as repos and dependencies can be declared on a single line) And some real limitations Limited support for 3rd party integration – for instance out of the box, TeamCity doesn’t speak sbt, nor does IntelliJ IDEA Steeper learning curve for build steps outside the default Side note: If a language has a fast compiler, why keep the slow compiler around? Even worse, why make it the default? I choose sbt, for the faster development speed it offers. Syntax Scala APIs really like to use punctuation – sometimes this works well, as in the following map1 |+| map2 The `|+|` defines a merge operator which does addition on the `values` of the maps. It’s less useful here: http(baseUrl / url >- parseJson[BuildStatus] sure you can probably guess what `>-` does from the context, but how about `>~` or `>+`? Language features I’m still learning, so not much to say just yet. However case classes are quite usefull, implicits scare me, and type constructors have lots of power. Community A number of projects, such as https://github.com/scalala and https://github.com/scalaz/scalaz are split between github and google code – github for the src, and google code for the docs. Not sure I understand the motivation here.
