• Dropbox context menu missing in OS X

  Problem My Dropbox context menu is missing in OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8). While the Dropbox service runs normally, Finder doesn't show the icons and also doesn't give me the ability to browse files on the website or copy the public link. What I've tried Removed ~/.dropbox and ~/Dropbox/.dropbox.cache Reinstalled Dropbox.app (both 1.4.7 stable and 1.5.0 experimental), went through the setup again Restarted Finder Logged out and back in All of these I've done over and over again, in random permutations. I've made sure that Dropbox appears in the Login Items under my Account (and I've never touched that) I don't know if ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items is missing the Dropbox plugin or if there shouldn't be one after all. In any case, I can't get the icons or the menu to appear.

• Verifying Time Machine backups

  I'm preparing my system for a Snow Leopard upgrade, and I prepare for the worst case scenario: full reinstall and restore. I would like to verify that my Time Machine backups are valid, and will restore correctly. My Time Machine backups go to a Linux server running Netatalk, and the backups complete successfully. How do I do a test restore to an alternative location, or otherwise verify my data without overwriting any existing files? Do I need to save anything in particular externally to make sure I can access the backups if I have to reinstall from scratch?

• trouble loggin into a Mac share from a Windows PC on the network

  I have this mixed network and usually log into the Macs from the Windows XP home machines and vice versa. I have no real networking knowledge, things just seem to work, more or less, with the default settings. Now I've got a new Snow Leopard Mac with a shared folder (added the user names of the Windows users at the sharing preferences) and the trouble is some machines can open the share and others can't. I can't see the difference. It feels like some Windows machines have a "cache" and won't ask for the share password, just deny access. I can also see old shares proposed at the Windows "add network place wizard".

• Determine $DISPLAY socket name on OS X 10.6?

  I'm looking to do something that's a little odd. I'm SSH'ing from a server to a Snow Leopard client to start an X11 data display process. In other words, SSH's X11 forwarding isn't what I want. I can do: client$ echo $DISPLAY /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ ls -l $DISPLAY srwx------ 1 myuser wheel 0 Dec 9 15:47 /tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 And, when I do: server$ ssh myuser@client client$ export DISPLAY=/tmp/launch-SOMETHING/org.x:0 client$ xterm I happily get my xterm. What I need, then, is some way to find out the correct value for $DISPLAY in my ssh session. From what I've read, $DISPLAY is set by launchd, but I haven't found any way to see that value. If it matters, I know that when my process connects from $server to $client, $client will logged in to the terminal as the same user.

• Disable OS X Portable Home Directories for specific hosts for all users, not just individuals?

  Would it be possible to block any and all Portable Home Directory services for specific hosts? Something like MCX's "MobileAccountNeverAsk-" but for the whole workstation? We have a network with both portable and stationary machines. I'd like our users to be able to use all machines, going portable on the MacBook but not being bothering with syncing when logged into stationary iMacs or Mac Pros. The Open Directory servers are running Snow Leopard (for now) and all clients are running Lion. Thanks! Paul

• Disable "Print and Close" Preview Shortcut on OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

  I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion from Leopard and there is a global shortcut that I would really like to disable. Apparently, now if you select a document and press Command + p, Preview will open, print the document, then close. I'm sure this was done with the purest intentions but, unfortunately, it is right next to Command + o, which I use many times a day to open files. Since installing Mountain Lion, I've accidentally printed way too many documents just trying to open them! I've gone into the Keyboard preference pane and tried to find where this shortcut is located, but haven't had any success. Anyone know how I can disable this?

• Video/films organizing software for mac

  I am looking for application that will help me organize movies, clips and other videos I have. I tell it a folder to watch, and then I can mark every video there as watched/unwatched, set rating, add description, tag it. And possibility to open with preferred video player (for me — VLC). Option to get all info from imdb or other source will be very good. yFlicks would be a good one, but it uses quicktime, so it doesn't like any non standard codec and container (for example mkv), it doesn't work well on Snow Leopard. Any suggestions?

• Active Directory password update not recognized on OS X 10.7.3?

  We have a few Macs in our office which are bound to our Active Directory (Server 2k8R2) domain for login authentication and access to file shares. For the most part this has worked without trouble. I recently changed my AD password (from the Windows box that is my main desktop machine), and my iMac still wants my old password for logins—even after a reboot. It correctly prompts for the new password when I attempt to connect to Windows smb file shares. The last time I changed my password, the iMac was running Snow Leopard and picked up the password change as expected. I'm a little bit of an OS X n00b, so I apologize if this should be obvious. My searching has turned up numerous issues people have had with Lion and Active Directory, but not this particular problem. Possibly related, we do have mobile accounts enabled for AD in the Directory Utility options. I assume this causes credentials to be cached locally, but it's not clear to me how to get them to update.

  On a Snow Leopard machine, at the Terminal: la ~/src/rmcl/ | grep RMCL -rw-r--r--@ 1 claytonstanley staff 6766167 Nov 13 2009 RMCL What is that '@' attribute? This file is part of an older OS X program that runs under Rosetta. I'm having issues where some older programs running under Rosetta require the @ attribute when opening files. But I'm not sure what that attribute is, so I have no way to know how to add/remove it. I did try a thorough Google search on this, but I wasn't able to find the answer. I would have thought this would be an easy one to find. Maybe the Google query isn't acting properly because of the single @ special character. Any info. is much appreciated. Thanks!

• Can't downgrade or update jailbroken iPhone

  I can't update or downgrade my iPhone 3GS, Firmware 4.3.5 tethered with redsn0w. Whenever I try to update it, I get a "device isn't eligible" error. I researched on how to do that, like changing host files, but none of them worked for me. • Why does Mac OS X sometimes complain that a copy failed because a file is in use?

  Recently I've been copying files from DVDs to network storage on my Mac running Leopard 10.5.7. I'm just dragging and dropping in Finder to perform the copy. Occasionally the copy will fail with a dialog complaining that a file is in use. If I repeat the copy generally it completes successfully. I could understand this being a problem if one was trying to move a file and it was open by another app. But none of these files are open in other apps. I just pop the DVD in, drag and drop the files to my NAS's network share and sometimes it fails with the "file in use" error. This is very annoying. Anyone have any ideas?

• Visual Studio Development on Virtual Box, Boot Camp, or VMWare Fusion

  I currently have a Mac, 2ghz and 2 gigs of ram, running OS X Leopard and Virtual Box with a Windows 7 Pro 32bit virtual machine. Performance on the virtual machine is fine for minor tasks but is very clunky while trying to multi-task or develop in Visual Studio 2008. What would be my best option for being able to use Visual Studio, keeping cost and time in mind? 1) Upgrade ram to 4 gigs ($100). Will this really improve my performance enough to use Visual Studio in a Windows 7 vm? Or am I just wasting time/money? 2) Reinstall/restore Windows 7 disk image as a Boot Camp partition. I assume this should improve my performance, yes? 3) Purchase VMWare fusion instead of VirtualBox. Does Fusion require less resources to run? I am open to any suggestions. Thanks in advance

• phpmyadmin error #2002 cannot connect to mysql server

  so i am getting this error when trying to connect to my mysql server. i have reinstalled MYSQL and php several times and tried a slew of command line work from info around the web.mysql is running and i know that my mysql.sock exists and is located in ~/private/tmp/ and also in ~/tmp/. i also have plenty of hard drive space. i have installed and setup phpmyadmin correctly only adding a password to 'Password for config auth'. AND i have connected to the server via Sequel Pro. so my question is what the heck is going on that i can't connect to the server via phpmyadmin? any guesses? also i'm on a 64-bit intel mac running snow leopard

• How do I use XQuartz with ssh on OS X?

  I've downloaded the latest stable version of XQuartz on my Snow Leopard machine, and I'm trying to make an ssh connection with X forwarding but X11 keeps opening. How can I get OS X to use XQuartz? I had X11 installed I downloaded and installed XQuartz X11 is not open / running XQuartz is open and running I try and connect to a remote system using iTerm2: ssh user@remote -X X11 opens. XQuartz is still open, but I doubt it is doing anything. I also tried moving X11 to the trash but then the ssh connection will not complete, even though XQuartz is open. I also get the two warnings which I don't understand how to fix, even after reading the ssh man page. Warning: untrusted X11 forwarding setup failed: xauth key data not generated Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

• XAMPP won't start Apache on Mac OS

  When I try starting Apache from the XAMPP control panel (Mac OSX Snow Leopard), I get the following error popup and Apache won't start: /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin/apachectl: line 70: ulimit: open files: cannot modify limit: Invalid argument (48)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 XAMPP was running perfectly 10 minutes earlier. I stopped Apache to add some .conf files and it failed on restart. I removed all the new .conf files (i.e. reverted it to how it was before) but now I get the above message. EDIT: I've checked AppMonitor and I see the "httpd" processes (one by _www nested within root). Just tried quitting these but they're auto-restarted on new process IDs and it didn't solve the problem.

• how to completly turn my mac into a host, mail server?

  i have mac osx 10.6.3 (snow leopard) i have already setup mamp so it acts like a local server. but the next thing i wanna try doing is making it into a mail server where i can register an email locally maybe something like myname@myip or however its done. then having the ability to setup mx records, cname, and all that dns good stuff. this will only be for education purposes so that i can fully understand how it all works. what do i need to do? i read something about MailServeSnow but i cant get its domain to work , it must be down. would this be the best option? also would i need mac server or my os would be just fine? thanks

• KVM Switch for a mac and a Windows (XP or 7) machine to share VDU

  Have a MacPro (snow leopard) connected to an (windows standard) Asus 25" monitor via a DVI--VGA adapter. Now the boss wants me to work from home, so I want to share my Asus display with a Windows XP laptop. No doubt once my wife sees this, she will want to do the same thing, but with a Windows 7 laptop. So what I would like, I think, is your recommendations for a KVM switch (or better solution) that allows the Mac and a (windows 7 or windows xp) laptop to share the Asus display. Bonus marks if they can share Apple keyboard and magic mouse, but am quite happy to use separate mouse keyboards. The MacPro is the one that is always connected, the laptops come and go. Any ideas?   I made a git repo on a local machine with "git init --bare" and added it as the remote origin on the project on my main computer with ssh: git add remote origin [email protected]:repoName.git I was able to make a commit and push from my main computer to the other computer the day I created the repo, but today i tried and it didn't work. When I did "git push origin" it returned this error: bash: line 1: git-receive-pack: command not found fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly The two machines are mac the main one running Leopard and the server one running Tiger.   I recently got my laptop stolen with some sensitive informations on it (personal source code, bank details in a secure file, passwords, etc) and I learnt the lesson: encrypt your sensitive data. Now, I am wondering what are the options to encrypt a partition (not an encrypt disk image) ? Aim: The aim is to prevent anyone (except me) to access those data. Requirement 0: The software must be able to encrypt non system partition. Requirement 1: Plausible deniability is required but preventing cold boot attack is however not an absolute requirement (I am not famous enough or have sensitive enough info to have this kind of requirement). Requirement 2 : Software taking advantage of AES hardware encryption are very welcome as I intent to get a Macbook Pro with i7 CPU (with AES-NI enabled instructions). I will have avirtual machine running in the encrypted partition. Requirement 3 : Free or reasonably cheap. Requirement 4 : Software must run on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Lion.   I have tried all alternatives and resources that I found on internet to achieve to change screen resolution in my MacOS X guest. I have the latest VirtualBox version (4.1.22) and I have MacOS X 10.6.3 Snow Leopard running in a vm guest.   Hi, I work in IT at a school and we recently updated our database software, however the web access that the teachers use to do registration does not work too well with Internet Explorer 7 and we're thinking about switching to chrome (mostly due to me hating IE in general) but the problem we have is that users are unable to migrate their bookmarks over from IE due to account restrictions, is there any way to get this working? A bit of info about the system if it could be helpful; Almost all the client PCs are running Win XP SP2. My colleagues machines are running Windows 7, I use OS X Snow Leopard and most of out servers are running windows server 2003 (with the exception of 2 one on 2000 server and another on 2008 R2). • Blacklist a single access point of a wireless network

  At my university, one of the wireless access points is failing. When something tries to associate to the network using that access point, it deassociates the client, claiming 802.1X authentication failure. Other access points do work normally using the same credentials. The issue has been reported, but after a month it still has still not been fixed. Now, I'm looking for a way to blacklist the access point's BSSID, so the OS prefers other access points on the same SSID. How can I blacklist specific BSSIDs in either Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Windows 7?

• Missing time zones in OSX and Windows

  I am working on a javascript to automatically detect a user's timezone (https://bitbucket.org/pellepim/jstimezonedetect/). But there are two timezones that I have a really hard time to test, since I can not set my system to observe these timezones. The timezones I am talking about are UTC+1245 (Chatham Islands, NZ) and UTC+0845 (Australia/Eucla). As far as I can tell in OSX (Snow Leopard) and in Windows 7 these timezones do not exist as a setting. Granted, very few people live in these areas, and it might just not be worth it. Does anyone know of a way to set these timezones on a system level? In any operating system? If it is not possible in a trivial way, what do people who live in these areas do to get their systems working as they would like?

• View old Inbox messages in (OS X) Mail.app via Exchange IMAP?

  We're thinking of migrating our Mac users away from Entourage 2008 and instead using Mail.app (built into OS X Snow Leopard). We're running SBS 2003 so it's Exchange 2003 for now. When I setup an "Exchange IMAP" Mail account for a user, their Inbox shows up as empty. However, all of their other folders appear to be populated with their existing email correctly. New email shows up correctly in their Inbox. What do you have to do to see all of the old messages already in the Inbox? Thank you.
