  • IDE/PATA high-speed hard drive dock

    I frequently need to access bare drives for backups and need a quick, high-speed way to deal with them. There are a multitude of SATA hard drive docks (for example), but I have a lot of IDE/PATA (hereafter "IDE") drives that I would like to be able to use similarly. There are IDE-to-SATA adapters so you can plug your IDE hard drive into a SATA port, so I don't see any reason why you couldn't use the same technology to have a native dock, yet none seems to exist. Now, I'm aware that 3.5" IDE drives do not have a specification for the layout of the connector, and therefore can't be slapped into a dock the same way a SATA drive could, but 2.5" PATA drives do. In fact, I'm not terribly interested in supporting 3.5" drives. It would be nice, but I deal with them far less frequently than 2.5" drives. Also, I'd very much like for the connection to the computer be faster than USB, preferably eSATA, I don't want to be spending time mounting a drive inside an enclosure, I don't want bare drives lying around with a cable hanging off of them, and I'd prefer a single dock rather than two. What seems like the ideal solution to me would be a regular SATA→eSATA dock and some sort of screwless adapter for IDE drives, but I'm open to any suggestions, regardless of my stated preferences, but which are, in some sort of order of preference: high-speed (faster than USB, at least) holder for drive (not just a cable) no complicated enclosure support for 3.5" IDE drives single dock Updates: Here's a 3.5" IDE to 3.5" SATA docking adapter that could be part of the solution. Weird. I figured that would be the impossible part. I was hoping to find something like this 2.5" to 3.5" SATA chassis that would take a 44-pin IDE drive internally. It looks like the Vantec EZ Swap EX comes awfully close. It has its own bay dock, but it looks like the SATA ports on the back are spaced properly, even if they're not aligned quite properly. Unfortunately, the proper position is at the very edge of the drive, which means that the docks' connectors are at the very edge of their recesses, which means there's no way to fit it in there.

  • Java OutOfMemoryError due to Linux RAM disk cache not freed

    The process will run fine all day, then, bam, without warning, it will throw this error. Sometimes seemingly in the middle of doing nothing. It will happen at seemingly random times during the day. I checked to see if anything else was running on the machine, like scheduled backups or something, but found nothing. The machine has enough physical memory (2GB, with about 1GB free for a 3-500MB load), and has sufficient -Xmx specified. According to our sysadmin, the problem is that the RAM that the kernel uses as a disk cache (apparently all but 8MB) is not freed when the JVM needs to allocate memory, so the JVM process throws an OutOfMemoryError. This could be because Java asks the kernel if enough memory is available before allocating and finds that it is insufficient, resulting in a crash. I would like to think, however, that Java simply tries to allocate the memory via the kernel, and when the kernel gets such a request, it makes room for the application by throwing our some of the disk cache. Has anyone else run in to the issue, and if so, what was the error, and how did you solve it? We are currently using jdk1.6.0_20 on SLES 10 SP2 Linux 2.6.16.60-0.42.9-smp in VMWare ESX.

  • Populating a drive that was formated to ntsf on seperate computer

    I recently downloaded some files that were over 4gb and wouldnt do a straight transfer to a external hd. this is all being done on a serperate computer we shall call computer1. my computer(computer2) is where im trying to get the files too. i used cmd to "Soft format" the drive to NTSF on computer1 so i could then take the drive to transfer the files to computer2. this was suppose to allow the format change without losing the files i had on there already... after the proccess was done i checked the drive on computer1 and all the old files were there and working....when i took the drive back to computer2 to transfer the files i had just downloaded from computer2 my computer...computer1:wont reconize or populate the external drive so it can give it a drive letter and function. the external drive works fine on computer1, but how do i get it to work again on computer2? when i try to populate it, i cant access the properties function in order to make permissions for everyone so it is reconized....any help would be greatfull..... also i am running windows 7 ultimate edition if that helps.

  • Does copy_from_user modify the user pointer?

    Does the copy_from_user function, declared in uaccess.h, modify the (void __user *)from pointer? The pointer isn't declared as const in the function declaration, only the contents it points to. The reason I ask is that I want to use copy_from_user twice, with the second copy_from_user copying from the place where the first one finished. I was planning on doing something like this, is it guaranteed to work? //buf is a user pointer that is already defined copy_from_user(my_first_alloced_region, buf, some_size); //do stuff copy_from_user(my_second_alloced_region, buf + some_size, some_other_size); Thanks in advance.

    so if you select "mac" and "usb" on this download page, it gives a series of command line instructions to make a USB key which the MacBook will boot into Ubuntu from. http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download I've followed them to the letter two or three times on different USB keys, and it doesn't work. There's a very great deal of technical discussion about EFI etc. but this set of instructions seems to suggest it should Just Work, and it doesn't. Help? I'm increasingly unhappy with the more locked-down approach Apple is taking, and I'd quite like to start using Linux with a view to transitioning over to using it as my main operating system, but booting from the CD takes forever, runs slowly and I'm really hoping to get it moving off USB. Can anybody help me?

    My Xubuntu system recognizes my speakers, and I can change the mixer settings to make them the active sound device, but no matter what I do, the hardware dial will only affect the onboard sound device. generic-usb 0003:046D:0A19.0003: input,hidraw1: USB HID v1.00 Device [ Logitech Logitech Z205 ] on usb-0000:00:1d.1-1/input2 updated to reflect the fact that this was Xubuntu desktop (from Kubuntu install originally) where I had this problem. I was able to easily do this from Ubuntu Natty installation.

  • Accidentally dd'ed an image to wrong drive / overwrote partition table + NTFS partition start

    I screwed up and set the wrong output for dd when trying to copy a freenas iso, overwriting the wrong external hard drive. Ironically, I was trying to setup a freenas server for data backup... External drive is only used for data storage, system is entirely intact Drive had a single NTFS partition filing the entire device (2TB WD elements) Drive originally had an MBR partition table. Drive now shows as having a GPT, presumably from the freenas image. Drive was mounted at the time, with maybe a couple kB of data written/read after running dd Drive is just a few months old and healthy (regular SMART / fs checks) I have not reboot the OS (crunchbang) /proc/partition still holds the correct information (and has been stored) Have dd's output (records in / out / bytes) testdrive did not find any partitions on quick or deep search running photorec to recover the more important data (a couple recent plaintext files that hadn't been backed up yet). Vast majority of disk content ( 80%) is unnecessary media files. My current plan is to let photorec do it's thing, then recreate the mbr with gparted and use cfdisk to create another NTFS partition using the sector information from /sys/block/.../. Is that a good course of action (that is, a chance of success)? Or anything else I should try first?   • Help me i can't format my usb? i have already tried with mkdosfs and gparted

    I have a MicroSD card in a USB adapter (which plugs into a USB port on my machine, and acts like a USB flash drive). I was using Unetbootin to make this a bootable USB flash drive with Kubuntu. But I needed to cancel while it was working. So I killed the Unetbootin process from the console. Since then, I can't format the MicroSD or delete the folder that Kubuntu made. I have also tried mkdosfs, with no success. I can't mount the drive anymore either? What can I do, to make this drive usable again? Trying to create a new partition table in GParted, as described in Eliah Kagan's answer, does not work. It fails with the error message "imposible crear tabla de particiones" ("unable to create a partition table").

  • Google Drive terminates without error on startup

    I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line.     I do like the post RTL8188CUS Wireless USB Dongle doesn't work unless I disable wireless security . But when I plug my 8192cu usb wireless card, my computer screen is off. At that time I even can not use Alt SysRq k or Alt SysRq + reisub. I compile the latest driver of 8192cu on ubuntu 12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-34. In RealTek site, I download 8192cu drive which is for Linux Kernel 2.6.18~2.6.38 and Kernel 3.0.8. But now in Ubuntu12.04 my kernel is 3.2.0-34. Every time I plug the usb 8192cu wireless card my system halts. Now I try to blacklist both the system's rtl8192cu driver and the new 8192cu driver I compile, but the system still halts when I plug the usb driver. What about you ? Thanks!

  • 750Gig Hard Drive shows full with only 315Gigs used

    I have a Win7 laptop with a 750Gig C: drive. It came partitioned with 714Gig usable from manufacturer. I installed programs, music files, etc up to 285 gigs. As of a few weeks ago it showed 285 Gigs. Two weeks of house guests later and it shows HD is full. I deleted some files but it still shows 652 Gigs on this drive while there are only 285 Gigs on drive. Relevant details: I am Administrator on laptop and have fair knowledge of what I am doing. I did not restore from backup, restore from mirror, upgrade HD's or anything else that would have touched the partition structure. Just daily use as imaging machine and web. I have checked partitions under disk administrator - no change, still partitioned with 714Gigs usable. Have looked through computer C drive by hand showing Hidden files and folders - no change. I have used JDisk Report to double check - it shows I have only 285 Gigs on C drive. I triple checked with TreeSize run as Administrator and it also shows 285 Gigs on C drive - yet Windows 7 still shows almost full. I used Windows 7 Utilities to Check for Disk Errors, and Defragged the drive. No errors shown and no change after Defrag.

  • Post raid5 setup reboot shows single hard drive failure on ubuntu 12.10?

    I just set up raid 5 on linux using three HDDs as per a guide. It all went fine until when I rebooted I got the following text: http://i.stack.imgur.com/Zsfjk.jpg. Does this mean one of my HDDs has failed? How do I check if any of them are failing? I tried using smartctl and didn't see any issues. Or is it nothing to do with failure and something else altogether? I would like to get the raid 5 working again but I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm using ubuntu 12.10 and the three raid disks each have a gpt partition with a single full size partition of filesystem type ext4. Note I only got an error on reboot not while I was creating the raid array which went fine. Thanks.
