  • I reinstalled OS X and the system was the same as before

    Strange thing happened. I want so sell my old Macbook and therefore used a disk image of the Snow Leopard DVD that I restored onto an external drive. I booted off the drive and went through the installation steps. Now I really would like to perform "archive and install", as there might be some files that I need later, but I didn't see the option. The only options for installation I had, were, including others, optional printer drivers and Rosetta. So I just clicked through and I wasn't given any other option. After about 45 minutes, my system booted again, and voila, there was my old system. Nothing changed. How should I proceed to actually reset the system? All I have is that Snow Leopard DVD image.

    Recently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website: http://www.kremalicious.com/2008/06/ubuntu-as-mac-file-server-and-time-machine-volume/ Finder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I've tried altering some of the config files and my Google-fu to look for solutions, but no luck. Any tips? (This was not an issue under 8.04, if it matters)

  • Auto-archive IMAP mail folders on OS X

    Hi, I am trying to achieve the following. Download all messages from mail server(and remove downloaded messages from server). Downloaded messages should be in a local mailbox preserving folder structure as was defined on server. The download process should be automatic and shouldn't create duplicates. I am on OSX and looking for solutions using Apple Mail or Thunderbird or similar. So far I have found POP is not the way to go (as it looses folder structure and potentially can cause duplicates). The solution described here seems very good but isn't yet available for thunderbird or apple mail. http://getsatisfaction.com/mozilla_messaging/topics/auto_archive_and_keep_folder_structure. The other alternative is outlook which has auto archive which is paid and I think exports to pst instead of the more common mbox format. Yet another alternative is http://www.pop4.org/ which adds support for folder management to POP. Which I don't think is going to become usable soon. Any other better solutions.? Thank you

  • Synchronize pasteboard between remote tmux session and local Mac OS pasteboard

    Setup: I use iTerm2 on MacOS to connect to a remote server. The remote server runs tmux, in which I open files and edit in vim sessions. Problem: I can't copy/paste between the remote tmux session and the local iTerm client. I can use iTerm 2's alt/option + mouse selection to select text, but this copies over multiple vim panes/tmux panes - bad. Is there any elegant solution to make selections in tmux panes synchronize between the remote pasteboard and the local (MacOS pasteboard)? I've seen reattach-to-user-namespace, but I'm pretty certain it doesn't do what I want.

But there is one thing that bothers me, which is my Mac partition volume is losing space slowly and gradually. I am pretty sure there are a lot of orphaned temporary files laying around in the volume. I know where to find the obsoleted temp files in my Windows partition, how about in Mac OSX?

    Hello, I need to install a program for my studies and, this program, need java to run. When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too.   • Can't download updates for reinstalled Office 2000 on WinXP OS "expected version not found" error message

    I replaced HD and reinstalled WinXP Pro and successfully downloaded all of the service packs and security updates. I've reinstalled my licensed version of Office 2000 (upgrade version from Office 97). The software installs and is functional; but when trying to install updates SR-1 or SR-1a or any individual security update I get error message "expected version of product not found". Microsoft no longer provides support for this legacy version of office. I can't find any support documents in Microsoft's database that addresses this issue. This is my sister's computer and I've already come out-of-pocket $100 for hardware (not counting the $$hours of labor). She only uses MS Word for minimal correspondence. No desire to spend $100+ for new version of Office. I would greatly appreciate any suggested fixes for this problem.

  • directory listing on Mac OS X

    I dumped a bunch of files (music and otherwise) onto my shiny new Macbook, and since I'm more comfortable with linux than Mac (at this point) I tend to use the terminal. I did a ls -al on the files I'd transfered, and some had an "@" at the end of the permissions string, and some did not. Something like: drwxrwxr--@ 93 user staff etc. drwxrwxr-- 107 user staff etc. The ones without "@" could be seen in Finder and accessed by other programs-- the "@" files and directories were invisible. Can anyone explain what the "@" means, and how to chmod (or whatever) so I can use these files? I assume it is some sort of system flag but I don't know how to unset it. Chmod 777 had no effect and I already own the files. Thanks

    I'm working on installing django and running it on my system. I have a problem though, in this tutorial creating a project is explained by running the command django-admin.py startproject mysite My issue is that this doesn't work. I changed to the directory where django-admin.py is located and ran the command chmod +x django-admin.py with no results. I tried adding the directory with the file to my path without results. I ended up fixing my problem with this command python /location/of/django-admin.py startproject mysite which yielded the outcome I expected. My problem is: What do I need to change/configure such that command django-admin.py startproject mysite would be sufficient?   • Cent OS ifcfg configuration for ranges of IP's with different netmask

    I have 1 set of 30 public IP's with a netmask of 255.255.255.0 and another set of 30 IP's with a netmask of 255.255.255.128. Both sets of IP's also have different gateways. How can I virtually assign the IP's to the machine? I have tried creating ifcfg-eth0:0 ifcfg-eth0:1 ifcfg-eth0:X ect for each IP. Below is my ifcfg file with. I have this for each IP with the correct gateway IP and netmask for each of my 60 IP's. If I do ip addr show it does show all of the 60 addresses with the correct broadcast IP and netmask. However I can only use 30 of my IP's that are from the same netmask. Am I doing this correctly? If the IP's show up with ip addr show does that mean I have correctly assigned them to the machine virtually? I want to check before I blame my hosting company for not routing the IP's correctly. DEVICE="eth0:1" BOOTPROTO="static" DNS1="**.**.**.**" DNS2="**.**.**.**" GATEWAY="2**.**.***.126" HOSTNAME="localhost.localdomain" HWADDR="0*:19:**:**:**:**" IPADDR="2**.*.**.**" IPV6INIT="no" MTU="1500" NETMASK="255.255.255.128" NM_CONTROLLED="yes" ONBOOT="yes" TYPE="Ethernet" Also is there a better way to do this?   • OS X Snow Leopard 10.6 Refuses to Load Websites the first time intermittently

    Many times when I am browsing the web, Snow Leopard will sit and load a site for 20 seconds or more, until it times out and says it cannot be displayed. If I refresh, it loads RIGHT away, every time. The issue is intermittent but happens from once every couple of days to a few times a day. So the long and short of it is this: Aluminum MacBook (Non-Pro) 2.4GHz Core2Duo, 4GB DDR3 I am using 10.6.6 but I have had this issue since 10.6.0 It happens in Firefox, Chrome, and Safari I have flushed my DNS (using the command 'blablabla flush') I am using custom DNS servers which I hoped would fix it but it had no effect* I am running Apache currently but haven't been for most of the time I've reformatted multiple times, always experiencing the issue I am on Cox cable internet, with a Motorola Surfboard & a Belkin F6D4230-4 v1 (Pre?) N wireless router. I've put the router in G only & N only & G+N to no effect It seems to be domain dependant as I can sometimes load the Google cache right away, and sometimes other sites will load but Google will refuse My Powerbook G4 with Leopard, other Windows XP laptops, & my wired Win7 desktop do not suffer from the issue. *I recently started using these to escape the awful Cox redirect page on timeouts I'm almost positive the issue has happened on other networks but I can't recall a specific instance (I have a terrible memory). The problem is intermittent and fixable enough (I just have to wait until it times out and hit refresh one time) but incredibly annoying since I'm constantly reading documentation from a large variety of sites. EDIT: To clarify, this happens with ALL sites, not only specific sites. I haven't been able to detect any pattern to the failures, but one day Google.com will refuse to load while reddit.com will, and the next day vice versa. Keep in mind that waiting for a timeout and hitting refresh loads the page right away, every time. If I don't wait for the timeout, opening more links, hitting refresh, and clicking the link a billion times have no effect. It seems to be domain neutral, affecting sites seemingly at random. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with connection inactivity either, because I will be SSHed into different servers, uploading files, browsing, downloading, etc, and it will just quit loading Jquery.com (for example) until I sit and wait for a timeout. /EDIT This is my last resort. Please, someone, tell me what is happening. Thank you.

  • fink hangs while compiling Octave on OS X

    Disclaimer: I'm totally new to Fink. I'm trying to install Octave (Matlab open source clone) on Mountain Lion using Fink, following instructions at http://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_MacOS_X It's a new installation of Fink, and I've also installed X11 per instructions. I'm using this command (which I believe is correct since everything's 64 bit now): sudo fink install octave-atlas It's hanging after a while, showing this as it's last output: ... Setting up xft2-dev (2.2.0-2) ... Clearing dependency_libs of .la files being installed Reading buildlock packages... All buildlocks accounted for. /sw/bin/dpkg-lockwait -i /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/binary-darwin-x86_64/x11/xinitrc_1.5-1_darwin-x86_64.deb (Reading database ... 14871 files and directories currently installed.) Preparing to replace xinitrc 1.5-1 (using .../xinitrc_1.5-1_darwin-x86_64.deb) ... Unpacking replacement xinitrc ... Setting up xinitrc (1.5-1) ... I did notice the process name on the terminal's tab was "sort", so the second time I hit this I tried Control-D (End-of-File), and this did seem to unstick it. I'm wondering if there's some misformed command and sort was trying to read from stdin? Questions: 1: Has anybody else seen this? Google wasn't helpful 2: Fink outputs a LOT of warnings and errors.... is that normal? 3: wondering if anybody's got Fink to compile Octave on Mountain Lion specifically? And whether they used just "octave" or "octave-atlas". Or if you got it working with MacPorts or Homebrew? 4: later Fink failed with "Failed: phase compiling: gnuplot-minimal-4.6.1-1 failed". I haven't started googling that yet... but wondering if anybody's see that? Also tried MacPorts but got other errors with Octave. And reading online it looks like HomeBrew also has issues with Octave on Mountain Lion. 5: Generally looking for anybody who's got Octave running on Mountain Lion with any of the package managers. I've been at this for a couple days ;-)

  • OS X SMB Connection to Windows Server 2008 R2

    I support many Macs that connect to an SMB share on a Windows Server 2008 R2 box. Occasionally I find that the Mac will try to connect and fail. The connection process will skip asking for credentials and there are none stored in keychain's password section. The server logs will show that the user tried to authenticate with invalid credentials. There are also no lingering connections from the server's point of view. The work around that I've found is to use an invalid username or a username that isn't the user's in the connection string for SMB so smb://domain;user@server/share instead of 'smb://server/share' this will force it to use the username I specified which the client doesn't have anything stored for. So it will then pop up the login window where the user changes the username to the correct one and user her password to connect happily. Specific computer in question: 15" MBP running Snow Leopard (10.6.7 or 10.6.8)

  • RAR Password recovery / hash extraction on OS X

    I'm running 10.6.2 and have been handed a couple of old files that need to be extracted. Old backups or finances or bills I believe. They are RAR files, and password protected. Is there a way to extract the hash from these files so I can feed it into John The Ripper or Cain and Abel? Edit I have downloaded cRARk, but unfortunately nothing I have (SimplyRAR, RAR Expander, The Unarchiver) will extract it without a password. Can someone verify that I'm crazy and there is no password on the Mac version?

  • Recovering OS X Mail Accounts Lost in Crash

    I had a hard crash on my Mac PowerBook and when I restarted, Mail came up with only my MobileMe account still available and I cannot figure out how to restore the other eight email accounts I have. The directories in ~/Library/Mail all seem to be there. I even did an rsync of the modified .plist files from a TimeMachine backup of the directory from before the crash (unfortunately, I was on travel, so the backup is more than a week old and I'd like to try and recover from that point without having to entirely restore from TimeMachine). I also did a fix permissions. So my questions are where exactly is the account information for Mac Mail kept? Any thoughts of what might have caused the failure? Why does only MobileMe come up? Any other thoughts on how to fix things?

  • OS X Server App ail not accept login credentials

    I cannot login to the server app and i know for sure all the login info is right. every time i enter my password the name window shakes to tell me it's invalid. I never post unless I'm out of ideas and I need it to be up so I can host my splash page tonight. i've spoken with "certified apple" specialists at some local mac stores and they are stumped too. Something is going on with the apache server, that's all i know for sure. I'll be monitoring this closely so any requests for info, etc. can be filled instantly. Thanks in advance. here's a few things i've noticed: I can ssh successfully into the server address as both root and admin. I've been fussing with the workgroup manager and could use guidance if that's where the problem lies. console shows this message repeatedly (org.apache.httpd[1890]) Exited with code: 1).     I'm trying to get a PPTP server running on a ubuntu server, but I've run into some issues with it.     I'm looking to impose a hard limit on a movie. In particular when I have earbuds in and a reasonable volume set, loud or sudden sounds (gun shot, dramatic sound effects, gun fire, etc) are loud enough to hurt. Lowering the volume makes speech and other sounds hard to hear. Is there a third party on-the-fly solution for this, or a plug-in for VLC that I can use?

  • Toshiba laptop cd drive read causes OS to totally freeze

    Okay I'll try to write an understandable summary. Forgive me if I'll fail with that attempt though. So. There is a Toshiba Satellite notebook. Got Windows 7 x86 Professional (OEM) installed on it, everything is fine (okay.. somewhat). The problem. If you put an audio or any kind of disc into the drive, something starts to eat the PC. Back then when the owner told me about this, he put an audio disc into the lappy. Winamp caused the IO load, 100%. Tried taskkill, taskkill /T, tried powershell, EVERYTHING. You just can NOT kill winamp or anything which becomes the blocker at that time. Even if you kill almost everything, laptop won't do a clear shutdown. Also I tried to use the force switch at 'shutdown' from cmd, but no use. (So: At these times you can use the laptop, but the blocker/explorer/disc becomes gray as a non-responding app. You can try to kill them, but that won't work, nor you can shutdown the machine). (Also tried using PID, but no use. For the highest IO I used the "select columns" from Task Manager and enabled the IO columns.) My first hunch was the problematic disc, autoplay and it tries to read tries to read (still shouldn't kill the PC). Disabled autoplay, removed winamp. Tried other software, etc. Everything was ok. Few days later the owner tried to put a disc into the machine and it started to reproduce the same symptoms but with a totally different disc. Uhm what to know. Virus is not an option, protected by BitDefender (valid license) and Spybot. Thanks if you have ANY idea about this strange problem. ps.: For now, the owner uses Daemon tools + Blindwrite as an alternative for those apps which wouldnt start without the disc.
