• Need opinions on LaTeX and ever upgrading

  Hi, I've been using LaTeX since 2005 with the TeXLive distribution and I've been upgrading as each new TeXLive distribution comes out. In the recent years I noticed an increase in new packages, updated packages and in one instance a new package bearing a different name replacing an old one by the same package author. A LaTeX document which relies heavily on packages and which has been produced a few years back may start to get some warnings and error messages on present-day LaTeX compilation. The primary reason I switched to LaTeX is because of its reliability and robustness to create big documents easily, not to mention the adorable typographic quality. With LaTeX one doesn't have to worry about how to open a docx in an old program supporting only doc for instance. Now, when there are so much continual changes in the packages in a LaTeX distribution, I tend to wonder when will this madness end. Not that having enhanced and new features are bad in packages, but not all updated packages are backward compatible. Eventually one would like to be able to compile a LaTeX file in 10 years time that he/she is working on at present and not get any compilation warnings/error messages due to some unpredictable behavior of updated packages or due to a package that has been cast-off from a LaTeX distribution. If I understand correctly CTAN do keep a database with all packages from different versions. I would like to know how you LaTeX users handle this issue. Thanks a lot...

• How can I stop the iPhone from displaying a transform change until after the screen is redrawn

  I have found the UIScrollView's zooming mechanism to be clunk and essentially unusable. So instead, I'm rolling my own. I have a UIView that resizes itself with the pinch-zoom, and that's working fine. When the zoom is complete, the view needs to reset its transform and redraw the images. The zoom works essentially in the same way the UIScrollView does. It sets the transform property of the UIView until complete. Then, when the zoom finishes, I want to reset the transform to CGAffineTransformIdentity, resize the frame to be the size it was before, and tell the view to redraw itself at the new size. It all works pretty well, except when I change the transform to identity then redraw the image, there is a slight flicker before the image completely redraws. This is due to the fact that I'm using a subclass of CATiledLayer, since the view can be of arbitrary size. I've overridden the fadeDuration to be zero, but there is still a flicker while the transform is reset before the redraw is finished. Is there any simple way to overcome this without creating another view to draw with then replacing it?

• Determine target architecture of binary file in Linux (library or executable)

  We have an issue related to a Java application running under a (rather old) FC3 on a Advantech POS board with a Via C3 processor. The java application has several compiled shared libs that are accessed via JNI. Via C3 processor is suppossed to be i686 compatible. Some time ago after installing Ubuntu 6.10 on a MiniItx board with the same processor I found out that the previous statement is not 100% true. The Ubuntu kernel hanged on startup due to the lack of some specific and optional instructions of the i686 set in the C3 processor. These instructions missing in C3 implementation of i686 set are used by default by GCC compiler when using i686 optimizations. The solution in this case was to go with a i386 compiled version of Ubuntu distribution. The base problem with the Java application is that the FC3 distribution was installed on the HD by cloning from an image of the HD of another PC, this time an Intel P4. Afterwards the distribution needed some hacking to have it running such as replacing some packages (such as the kernel one) with the i383 compiled version. The problem is that after working for a while the system completely hangs without a trace. I am afraid that some i686 code is left somewhere in the system and could be executed randomly at any time (for example after recovering from suspend mode or something like that). My question is: Is there any tool or way to find out at what specific architecture is an binary file (executable or library) aimed provided that "file" does not give so much information?

• Driver denied access to PCI card

  We wrote a Windows device driver to access our custom PCI card. The driver uses CreateFile to get a handle to the card. We recently had trouble at one installation were the card appeared to stop working. We tried replacing the card (the replacement appeared not work either). The computer vendor replaced the motherboard and both cards still failed to work. We put the cards in a different computer and both worked fine. We now have the computer at our office for examination. The Windows Device Manager lists our card in Other Devices as usual and says it's working fine. However, our driver initialization fails when it attempts to connect to the card. We created a test version of our driver with some extra debugging and determined that CreateFile is failing. It returns INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE as it is supposed to on failure. GetLastError indicates the error is Access is Denied. Since we're logged into the system as a local administrator, what can deny access to the device?

• how do I get a new line, after using float:left?

  What I am trying to do is have rows of images, 6 images in each row. Some of these images need to have another image floating on top of them (flush with the lower-right corner). I was able to get that to work from this thread: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/48474/how-do-i-position-one-image-on-top-of-another-in-html However, now I'm unable to get the new row after the 6th image. Neither <BR> or <P> create a new line. They simply push the next image down several pixels, but the image is still in the same line. It seems like the float style is interfering with the <BR> and/or <P>. I tried using different styles for the image that starts a new row, like float:none and display:block, but neither worked. The odd thing is that the new line starts after the 7th image. • WiX major upgrade! Need different behaviors for different components...

  Okay! I have finally more closely identified the problem I'm having. In my installer, I was attempting to get a settings file to REMAIN INTACT on a major upgrade. I finally got this to work with the suggestion to set <InstallExecuteSequence> <RemoveExistingProducts After="InstallFinalize" /> </InstallExecuteSequence> This is successful in forcing this component to leave the original, not replacing it if it exists: <Component Id="Settings" Guid="A3513208-4F12-4496-B609-197812B4A953" NeverOverwrite="yes"> <File Id="settingsXml" KeyPath="yes" ShortName="SETTINGS.XML" Name="Settings.xml" DiskId="1" Source="\\fileserver\Release\Pathways\Dependencies\Settings\settings.xml" Vital="yes" /> </Component> HOWEVER! This is a problem! • File.Replace throwing IOException

  I have an app that can make modify images. In some cases, this makes the filesize smaller, in some cases bigger. The program doesn't have an option to "not replace the file if result has a bigger filesize". So I wrote a little C# app to try and solve this. Instead of overwriting the files, I make the app write the result to a folder under the current one and name that folder Test. The C# app I wrote compares grabs the contents of both folders and puts the full path to the file(s) in two List objects. I then compare and replace. The replacing isn't working however. I get the following IOException: Unable to remove the file to be replaced The location is on an external hard-drive, on which I have full rights. Now, I know I can just do File.Delete and File.Move in that order, but this exception has gotten me interested in why this particular setup wont work. • How to DRY on CRUD parts of my Rails app?

  I am writing an app which - similarly to many apps out there - is 90% regular CRUD things and 10% "juice", where we need nasty business logic and more flexibility and customization. Regarding this 90%, I was trying to stick to the DRY principle as much as I can. As long as controllers go, I have found resource_controller to really work, and I could get rid of all the controllers on that area, replacing them with a generic one. Now I'd like to know how to get the same with the views. On this app I have an overall, application.html.erb layout and then I must have another layout layer, common for all CRUD views and finally a "core" part: On index.html.erb all I need to generate a simple table with the fields and labels I indicate. For new and edit, also generic form edition, indicating labels and fields (with a possibility of providing custom fields if needed). I am not sure I will need show, but if I do it would be the same as new and edit. What plugins and tools (or even articles and general pointer) would help me to get that done? Thanks, Felipe.

• Subversion freaking out on me!

  I have two copies of a site, one is the production copy, and the other is the development copy. I recently added everything in the production to a subversion repository hosted on our linux backup server. I created a tag of the current version and I was done. I then copied the development copy overtop of the production copy (on my local machine where I have everything checked out). There are only 10-20 files changed, however, when I use tortoise SVN to do a commit, it says every file has changed. The diff file generated shows subversion removing everything, and replacing it with the new version (which is the exact same). What is going on? How do I fix it? • Responsive logo (image replacement) in html5boilerplate

  I'm using the responsive version of html5 boilerplate via initializr.com. My site uses a custom logo so i added the .ir class to h1 .ir { background-color: transparent; border: 0; overflow: hidden; *text-indent: -9999px; } like this <h1 class="title ir">h1.title</h1> The documentation says Add the .ir class to any element you are applying image-replacement to. When replacing an element's content with an image, make sure to also set a specific background-image: url(pathtoimage.png);, width, and height so that your replacement image appears. So I added to the code these lines .ir { background-image: url(http://i.imgur.com/yYnyJ.jpg); background-size: 100% auto; width:450px; height:450px } The problem are the specific width and height. • Cakephp cache only caching one file per action

  Hi, I have a songs controller. Within the songs controller i have a 'view' action which get's passed an id, eg /songs/view/1 /songs/view/5 /songs/view/500 When a user visits /songs/view/1, the file is cached correctly and saved as 'songs_view_1.php' Now for the problem, when a user hit's a different song, eg /songs/view/2, the 'songs_view_1.php' is deleted and '/songs/view/2.php' is in it's place. The cahced files will stay there for a day if I don't visit a different url, and visiting a different action will not affect any other action's cached file. I've tried replacing my 'cake' folder (from 1.2 to 1.2.6), but that didn't do anything. I get no error messages at all and nothing in the logs. Here's my code, I've tried umpteen variations all ending up with the same problem. var $helpers = array('Cache'); var $cacheAction = array( 'view/' => '+1 day' ); Any ideas? EDIT: After some more testing, this code var $cacheAction = array( 'view/1' => "1 day", 'view/2' => "1 day" ); will cache 'view/1' or 'view/2', but delete the previous page as before. If I visit '/view/3' it will delete the cached page from before... sigh EDIT: Having the same issue on another server with same code...

• mootools event listener disappears after element.innerHTML is changed

  I putting together a page that will display a set of stored values. I am using mootools and AJAX calls to update the values without needing to refresh the page each time the user selects a new item from the drop down menus. the HTML each line looks something like: <div class="selections"> <input class="checkbox selector" type="checkbox" CHECKED /> <span class="b_name"> <select class="b_n selector"> <!-- options --> </select> </span> <span class="b_level"> <select class="b_l selector"> <!-- options --> </select> </span> <span class="values"> <!-- the values --> </span> In the head I have set up an event listener like: $$('.selector').addEvent('change', function(event){changeValues(this);}); My problem is that when the "b_name" select changes I have to update the list of options in the "b_level" select. I accomplish that by getting a list of the possible options from my database through a php script on another page and replacing "b_level"'s innerHTML. Once I do that, the event listener attached to "b_l selector" no longer works. I tried to resolve this issue by explicitly attaching an event listener to "b_l selector" each time "b_name" changes like so: row.getElement('.b_l').addEvent('change', function(event){changeValues(row.getElement('.b_l'));}); where 'row' is the html element 'div.selections'. It still isn't working and I have no idea what's going on. Can anyone offer a suggestion as to how I can get this resolved? or perhaps a better way to do what I'm doing. Thanks

• Calling NSFetchedResultsController & CoreData experts

  I am having a few nagging issues with NSFetchedResultsController and CoreData, any of which I would be very grateful to get help on. Issue 1 - Updates: I update my store on a background thread which results in certain rows being delete, inserted or updated. The changes are merged into the context on the main thread using the "mergeChangesFromContextDidSaveNotification:" method. Inserts and deletes are updated properly, but updates are not (e.g. the cell label is not updated with the change) although I have confirmed the updates to come through the contextDidSaveNotifcation, exactly like the inserts and deleted. My current workaround is to temporarily change the staleness interval of the context to 0, but this does not seem like the ideal solution. Issue 2 - Deleting objects: My fetch batch size is 20. If an object is deleted by the background thread which is in the first 20 rows, everything works fine. But if the object is after the first 20 rows and the table is scrolled down, a "CoreData could not fulfill a fault" error is raised. I have tried resaving the context and reperforming the frc fetch - all to no avail. Note: In this scenario, the frc delegate method "didChangeObject...." is not called for the delete - I assume this is because the object in question had not been faulted at that time (as it is was outside the initial fetch range). But for some reason, the context still thinks the object is around, although is has been deleted from the store. Issue 3 - Deleting sections : When the deletion of a row leads to the deletion of a section, I have gotten the "invalid number of rows in section???" error. I have worked around this by removing the "reloadSection" line from the NSFetchedResultsChangeMove: section and replacing it with "[tableView insertRowsAtIndexPaths...." This seems to work, but once again, I am not sure if this is the best solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  hello all i have the following piece of code, that im looking forward to optimize, since i'm consuming gobs of memory this routine is heavily used first optimization would be to move the stringbuilder construction out of the download routine and make it a field of the class, then i would clear it inside the routine can you please suggest any other optimization or point me in the direction of some resources that could help me with this (web articles, books, etc). i'm thinking about replacing the stringbuilder by a fixed (much larger) size buffer ... or perhaps create a larger sized stringbuilder thanks in advance. • Dealing with Expression Blend's lack of support for C++/CLI projects

  I have a WPF C# project that references a C++/CLI mixed mode project. I'm having trouble using the WPF project in Expression Blend 3. I'm new to Blend so perhaps this is obvious, but it won't display the xaml designer properly until it builds the project. In my case it complains that my custom commands are not "recognized or accessible" and the solution is to build the project in Blend. But I can't build the project because it references a C++/CLI mixed mode project which Blend won't load. The WPF project is pure C# it just happens to reference a C++/CLI mixed mode project but I'm not asking Blend to do anything with the mixed-mode assembly. How can I work around this problem? Edit: I was able to get it to build by removing the reference to the C++/CLI mixed mode project and replacing it with a reference to the actual assembly. However this is not ideal because in my past experience Visual Studio will not always be able to resolve the reference when switching between release and debug configurations.

  I have a list of users users["pirates"] and they're stored in the format ['pirate1','pirate2']. If I hand the list over to a def and query for it in MongoDB, it returns data based on the first index (e.g. pirate1) only. If I hand over a list in the format ["pirate1","pirate"], it returns data based on all the elements in the list. So I think there's something wrong with the encapsulation of the elements in the list. My question: can I change the encapsulation from ' to " without replacing every ' on every element with a loop manually? • 3D and AI basics. The foundation before the coding.

  Hi, everyone. (If you have the time and patience:) I've recently made the decision to study programming seriously and I'm about to order TAOCP and Concrete Mathematics to begin my studies (please don't get caught up on this). I'm very much interested in learning and understanding how 3D works but I'm aware that if I plan to do it right there's still a long walk before I get to actually play with 3D coding. Now to the question.. (tl;dr) Excluding programming itself, what disciplines do I have to be familiar with to code 3D? What kinds of mathematics? Physics? What else? What books do you recommend on such subjects? Now read it all again but replacing "3D" with "AI". Please don't recommend computer-specific books. The question is about the foundation to be learned before using the machine. Also, if possible, please keep the list brief; I plan to order one book on each subject but no more than that for now. Excuse me for any English mistakes, it's not my first language. Thank you.

• Prototyping Qt/C++ in Python

  I want to write a C++ application with Qt, but build a prototype first using Python and then gradually replace the Python code with C++. Is this the right approach, and what tools (bindings, binding generators, IDE) should I use? Ideally, everything should be available in the Ubuntu repositories so I wouldn't have to worry about incompatible or old versions and have everything set up with a simple aptitude install. Is there any comprehensive documentation about this process or do I have to learn every single component, and if yes, which ones? Right now I have multiple choices to make: Qt Creator, because of the nice auto completion and Qt integration. Eclipse, as it offers support for both C++ and Python. Eric (haven't used it yet) Vim PySide as it's working with CMake and Boost.Python, so theoretically it will make replacing python code easier. PyQt as it's more widely used (more support) and is available as a Debian package. Edit: As I will have to deploy the program to various computers, the C++-solution would require 1-5 files (the program and some library files if I'm linking it statically), using Python I'd have to build PyQt/PySide/SIP/whatever on every platform and explain how to install Python and everything else.

• Python re module becomes 20 times slower when called on greater than 101 different regex

  My problem is about parsing log files and removing variable parts on each lines to be able to group them. For instance: s = re.sub(r'(?i)User [_0-9A-z]+ is ', r"User .. is ", s) s = re.sub(r'(?i)Message rejected because : (.*?) \(.+\)', r'Message rejected because : \1 (...)', s) I have about 120+ matching rules like those above. I have found no performances issues while searching successively on 100 different regex. But a huge slow down comes when applying 101 regex. Exact same behavior happens when replacing my rules set by for a in range(100): s = re.sub(r'(?i)caught here'+str(a)+':.+', r'( ... )', s) Got 20 times slower when putting range(101) instead. # range(100) % ./dashlog.py file.bz2 == Took 2.1 seconds. == # range(101) % ./dashlog.py file.bz2 == Took 47.6 seconds. == Why such thing is happening ? And is there any known workaround ? (Happens on Python 2.6.6/2.7.2 on Linux/Windows.)

  I have a program where the user will enter a string such as PropertyA = "abc_*" and I need to have the asterisk match any character. In my code, I'm grabbing the property value and replacing PropertyA with the actual value. For instance, it could be abc_123. I also pull out the equality symbol into a variable. Much effort has been put in to make the code bases as similar as possible to one another and ultimately only the config file and some representational data will differ between them. Each project has its own SVN repository which maps directly to a live test site. That part is handled by the IDE we use to work. Now I am in need to create a some sort of system to keep all these projects in sync. The best theoretical solution so far is to create a local hook script that would fire on committing and Merge the committed files from the project that is being committed to all other projects Optionally upload them to the live site, replacing previous files The first problem is that I don't know how I would do the merging - I guess it would be like applying a SVN patch or something. The second is if I do not want to upload the changes to the live server, how would I go about synching the live and local code bases (replace older files?). I am posting this question, not going through the potentially huge trouble of solving the aforementioned problems myself is that I believe this is a pretty common situation and someone would already have a solution and others may benefit from the answers in the future. Lastly, I'm on windows7, develop PHP and use tortoiseSVN.

• Positioning objects in views during re-orientation in iPad

  iPad Gurus: Apple wants us to support all orientations. I take that to mean that a particular layout should either rotate so that all objects are positioned relatively the same OR, if that doesn't look good, then they ought to be repositioned, OR two views ought to be designed and built. If I rely on the built-in rotation mechanism, the objects either get resized or they straddle the edge of the page in one orientation or the other, or they disappear from view altogether. I can't seem to find the right settings to get the objects to align clearly so they are seen in each orientation. Repositioning leads to a lot of if statements in the View Controller. So I don't think Apple had that in mind. I tried replacing views and even view controllers in "willRotateToInterfaceOrientation" method, but that either causes crashes or the portrait views end up in landscape unexpectedly and vv. Moreover, two view controllers means double the coding for the same view. There must be proper way to handle orientation changes, but I have searched the internet and documentation and sample code in vain for something that works. How is this done properly? Thanks!

• smart phone UI limitations

  I would like to know, what limitations there are for how far one can go in terms of replacing UI components of current touch screen smart phones, in particular iPhone, Blackberry and android based phones. What I would like to do is create a custom UI for dialing out and incoming calls. I have some experience with Blackberry development. The theme builder for it, can be used to customize certain items on the incoming call screen, but it doesn't look like that you can increase the size of answer button. I know Blackberry also gives you access to all the phone APIs, but I'm not sure that you can create your own UI that can gain preference over the Blackberry incoming call screen. And if you try to customize the incoming call screen by adding any buttons to it, they would be rendered as pictures. I could possibly design a complete UI for android, since different manufactures have different UI for android based phones. Can I do what I want to do using iPhone, Blackberry or android? Or any other phone for that matter? I am guessing may be for Nokia phones using Qt, but I prefer the 3 platforms I listed. Thanks for all your help.
