  Hi Guys, Sorry if this is a very dumb question. I have installed the virtualWIFI msi on vista. I assumed that would simply just allow selecting more than one wifi connection with my single card however I don't get much new options. Historically many of my Debianite friends and myself have simply altered apt's sources.list and run apt-get dist-upgrade. I follow Ubuntu's recommendations, but I've always wondered what the magic difference between these two processes is. What, exactly, does do-release-upgrade do, on say an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10? (Examples from other releases welcome.)

• Why would a PCI scan fail because of components that are not even installed?

  Recently a PCI scan was run against a web server and the result was a failure. Some of the issues could be fixed, however others simply make no sense to me. The machine was a clean install, there are only two things running, the .NET 3.5 website and the dotDefender web application firewall. However there are several errors similar to: Web server vulnerability Impact: /servlet/SessionServlet: JRun or Netware WebSphere default servlet found. All default code should be removed from servers. Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 6.4 CVE: CVE-2000-0539 I'm not sure what this is, but I can't find anything on the server that looks anything like this. Web server vulnerability Impact: /some.php?=PHPE9568F35- D428-11d2-A769-00AA001ACF42: PHP reveals potentially sensitive information via certain HTTP requests that contain specific QUERY strings. Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 5.0 PHP is not installed. Trying to add that query string to any page does nothing because the application ignores it. And doing that phpVersion check results in a 404. Similar to this, there are dozens of errors related to JSP and Oracle that are also not installed. Web server vulnerability Impact: /admin/database/wwForum.mdb: Web Wiz Forums pre 7.5 is vulnerable to Cross-Site Scripting attacks. Default login/pass is Administrator/letmein Risk Factor: Medium/ CVSS2 Base Score: 4.0 There are several errors like this, telling me that Web Wiz Forums, Alan Ward A-Cart 2.0, IlohaMail, etc. are all vulnerable. These are not installed or referenced anywhere I can find. There are even references to pages that simply don't exist, like OpenAutoClassifieds. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to why these errors are showing up or where I might look to find these components if they are in fact installed? Note: This website and server are for a subdomain of the main website. The main website runs on a server that is running Apache/PHP, but I don't have access to that server. The report says the subdomain was the site being scanned, but is it possible for it to have scanned the main site as well?

• What super-calculator do you use?

  Windows Calculator can switch into a "Scientific" mode, getting more math and logical operators, but that's not good enough. I know there are tons of features its missing, such as the ones we see in the Windows 7 calc, or simply making things more visual. Its been years and I still haven't found a good calculator replacement. Suggestions? And hopefully your calc replaces MS Calc when I press the dedicated "calculator key" on my Keyboard, so I don't have to hunt around for a shortcut.

• Can a 300W power supply support two additional hard drives?

  I am thinking of purchasing the Dell I580-5108NBC, but I want to add 2 1TB SATA drives in a RAID5 config. The system only has a 300W power supply, and already has a 1TB drive and a DVD burner. Is the 300W power supply sufficient to support two additional drives, or should I upgrade it? Or, can I simply unplug the DVD burner?

• Expose Windows LDAP address book on the internet

  I need to expose Active Directory, or at least the address book functions on the internet for some mail clients and other devices. The standard response is to simply not or vpn in, however VPN isn't an option for us with some of the hardware devices. A number collages expose their setups out to the internet so I'm assuming their has to be a safe way of doing it. Best option I've come up with to install a linux ldap host, then hourly sync over the relevant contact information however that seems like major overkill.

• Rebuilding OWA / Exchange 2003

  Anyone have any experience rebuilding OWA? I am under the impression that this KB contains the process http://support.microsoft.com/?ID=280823 under the section "Method 1: Reset the HighWaterMarks" I inherited an Exchange box that was never patched, and after getting up to date I'm getting some permissions issues. If anyone has any warnings about using the above process let me know. Alternatively, can I simply uninstall and reinstall OWA from the Exchange 2003 CD?

• Best format for backing up data in Blu Ray

  We are in the process of backing up our hard drives to Blu Rays. I am creating tar.gz files and burning them to Blu Ray. Is it possible to use a simple (preferably Python-based) solution for creating images of those tar.gz files, of a predetermined size (to fit in the Blu Ray), and simply burn this images to the disc? Do you have any other approach for creating physical back-up of your hard drives?

• Specifying prerequisites for Puppet custom facts?

  I have written a custom Puppet fact that requires the biosdevname tool to be installed. I'm not sure how to set things up correctly such that this tool will be installed before facter tries to instantiate the custom fact. Facts are loaded early on in the process, so I can't simply put a package { biosdevname: ensure => installed } in the manifest, since by the time Puppet gets this far the custom fact has already failed. I was curious if I could resolve this through Puppet's run stages. I tried: stage { pre: before => Stage[main] } class { biosdevname: stage => pre } And: class biosdevname { package { biosdevname: ensure => installed } } But this doesn't work...Puppet loads facts before entering the pre stage: info: Loading facts in physical_network_config ./physical_network_config.rb:33: command not found: biosdevname -i eth0 info: Applying configuration version '1320248045' notice: /Stage[pre]/Biosdevname/Package[biosdevname]/ensure: created Etc. Is there any way to make this work? EDIT: I should make it clear that I understand, given a suitable package declaration, that the fact will run correctly on subsequent runs. The difficulty here is that this is part of our initial configuration process. We're running Puppet out of kickstart and want the network configuration to be in place before the first reboot. It sounds like the only workable solution is to simply run Puppet twice during the initial system configuration, which will ensure that the necessary packages are in place.   If both source and destination are remote, rsync complains: The source and destination cannot both be remote. rsync error: syntax or usage error (code 1) at main.c(1156) [Receiver=3.0.7] Is there a insurmountable technical obstacle to making rsync do this? Or it's simply a case of it's-not-yet-implemented? It seems relatively easy to create a local buffer in memory that mediates the transfer between two remotes, holding both hashes and data. Conversely, is there other (unix) software that implements this functionality?

• OpenOffice.org 3 waits 25 seconds before opening

  I'm on Fedora 14, and OpenOffice 3.3.0 takes a long time to open (about 30 seconds, sometimes less). It isn't a CPU or disk performance issue, it's just simply a very long delay before the program opens. It appears to be a frivolous network connection timing out. According to Wireshark, it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none) which fails, after which it tries to look up: dulcimer.(none).mylitestream.com (dulcimer is my hostname, and LiteStream is my ISP) Is there a way to work around this bug in OpenOffice?

(dont ask why, long story, I need them for each with different settings involving Audio Recording) I am very keen to install the new Ubuntu and get into a new OS, out of interest but I don't want to mess with my current 2 windows installations? • Trouble using gitweb with nginx

  I have a git repository in a directory inside of /home/raynes/pubgit/. I'm trying to use gitweb to provide a web interface to it. I use nginx as my web server for everything else, so I don't really want to have to use another just for this. I'm mostly following this guide: http://michalbugno.pl/en/blog/gitweb-nginx, which is the only guide I can find via google and is really recent. fcgiwrap apparently isn't in Lucid Lynx's repositories, so I installed it manually. I spawn instances via spawn-fcgi: spawn-fcgi -f /usr/local/sbin/fcgiwrap -a 127.0.0.1 -p 9001 That's all good. • No login prompt displayed after updating Ubuntu 10.04, broken gdm

  So here's what happens: I updated my system the other day, was prompted for a reboot for the update to complete but was in the middle of working so I delayed it until after I was done. I reboot and it's broken :(. It appears to boot normally, with the following exceptions: The purple Ubuntu load screen no longer displays (though it did for the first couple of times I tried to get in). I hear the login prompt sound, but no login prompt appears. Nor is it simply "invisible" - pressing enter, typing my password, and pressing enter again do nothing. Normally my Bluetooth mouse is functional at this point, but it is not. GRUB displays recovery options for my current kernel, and for an older one (2.6.32-24). Trying to boot into .32-24 gives me an error saying "udevadm can't do something while udev is not configured". So I try solutions listed here: http://superuser.com/questions/195786/ubuntu-update-went-wrong-pc-doesnt-boot-how-can-i-repair-it Nothing I tried seemed to work, and after further Googling my hunch is that it's a problem with gdm. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't know all that much about how Linux/Ubuntu systems work just yet. Things I'm able to do: Boot to a live CD Ctrl-Alt-F2 after that login sound plays brings me to a console login, which I can successfully do (it's how I tried the solutions above). This works only under the current kernel. A hack I'd be willing to explore is removing the login prompt from the console, but I'd prefer to "simply" fix what's wrong. Like that guy, I need to repair the system rather than reinstall. System: Dell Inspiron 1525 Core 2 Duo Proprietary Driver for Broadcom 43xx wireless Dual-boot with Windows 7 (which is how I'm posting this, unfortunately I only have this machine and any experimenting requires constant reboots into Windows/brokenbuntu) Last package installed was Moonlight, but it appeared to install properly. Kernel: 2.6.32-25 Edit: After working with Karl's suggestions, it seems that the problem is with gdm. Error exit status 245 when attempting to sudo apt-get install --reinstall gdm, also an error processing gdm when running sudo apt-get -f install. How do I reinstall or repair gdm so that I can get back into my machine?

  On my Windows Vista PC, there is always an instance of "GoogleUpdate.exe" running. I find this annoying, so I'd like to make sure it doesn't start automatically. This proves to be not so easy, as I have tried these solutions: I disabled the "Google updateservice" service I removed the registry section "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Google Update" None of these worked. The registry section is simply re-added. Does anyone know the trick to avoid GoogleUpdate.exe to be started after booting the system?

• faking NAT with a VMware distributed switch across multiple hosts

  Have a VM that will act as the router, and will be connected to both networks (NAT + 'real'). I spread the distributed switch across the hosts, although any VM that is not on the same physical host as the router/dhcpd simply doesn't get an IP. So its obviously my dvSwitch config. Has anyone achieved a NAT solution using a dvSwitch before that they could share?! Thanks.

• How can I use fetchmail (or another email grabber) with OSX keychain for authentication?

  Every fetchmail tutorial I've read says putting your email account password clear-text in a config file is safe. However, I prefer security through layers (since, if my terminal is up and someone suspecting such email foolery slides over and simply types "grep -i pass ~/.*" then, oops, all my base are belong to them!). Now, with msmtp (as opposed to sendmail) I can authenticate using the OSX keychain. Is there an email 'grabber' that lets me use Keychains (or at least, that lets me MD5 the password)?
