• How to prevent unit test from using util from test project?

  I am using eclipse and I have two projects, project1 and project1-test. Below is the example layout of my projects: project1 -src --my.package ----MyClass.java --my.package.util ----util.java project1-test -src --my.package ----MyClassTest.java --my.package.util ----util.java MyClass.java makes a static call to the util.java in project1. MyClassTests.java is testing MyClass.java. When the test class runs, it fails and complains that MyClass.java is referencing a method in util.java that doesn't exist. Under project1, the method being referenced exists in util.java but under project1-test, the method doesn't. When I run MyClassTests.java, the util.java that is being referenced from MyClass.java is from project1-test when it should be project1. Is there some way to make MyClass.java not reference util.java from project1-test when running MyClassTest.java?

• Force10 S4810 "Overlapping route for management interface"

  We just got in a pair of Force10 S4810s and are getting tripped up on what should be a very basic configuration step. The S4810 has a gigabit copper management port (though ultimately we'd like to not use that and just trunk in a management vlan). We followed the configuration commands verbatim from a rapid config guide and keep getting a weird error. • Having IIS remote management problem with my vista machine managing Server 2008 IIS 7.5

  I am trying to use IIS 7 Remote Management installed on Vista Ultimate SP1. Connection is to IIS 7.5 on Windows Server 2008 Webserver R2. Tried on both full & core install. When I connect up, the console wants to download and install new features. Microsoft.Web.Management.IisClient 7.5.0.0 Microsoft.Web.Management.AspnetClient 7.5.0.0 I check the boxes and click OK and it downloads them and asks if I want to install them, but after I click run it just quits. I tried just choosing one or the other, same thing. I ran IIS Remote tool as administrator. These features installed correctly on my XP machine. Any ideas? UPDATE : If I had any Rep I would offer like 500 rep to get this fixed!

I have: Joined server to WORKGROUP Enabled Remote Management Set the server name Set a static IP Set the DNS servers to my ISPs DNS Servers (same as default DNS Servers on my Windows 8 remote management client) Set the correct time zone Created net user on server (net user /add admin password) Added user to special Administrators group on server (hvremote /add:admin) Granted anonymous dcom access on client using hvremote However, the "ns lookup for DNS verification" fails on both the client and server with the same error: Server: my.isps.server.name.net Address: 111.222.333.1 *** my.isps.server.name.net can't find 192.168.1.3: Non-existent domain Thanks for the help.

• SQL Management Studio is painfully slow on 32-bit Windows 7

  I've been having issues running anything in SQL Management Studio on Win 7. Basically, doing anything through the Management Studio interfaces completely freezes it up for a few minutes. Running a query is nearly impossible because it takes nearly 2 minutes just for the IDE to parse it and another minute to run it when the query itself completes instantaneously outside of the IDE. I'm not even going to go into the query designer. Anything with heavy user interaction such as editing a row in the result set where i have to click a cell freezes up the front-end. I tried reinstalling to no avail. Also tried running in compatibility mode without any difference whatsoever. Anybody had a similar experience? I'm running SQL Management Studio 2008 version 10.0.2531.0 on 32-bit Windows 7. Connecting to a remote SQL Server instance (2008 R2). Thanks.

• SCCM for mobile device management returns 404 on /devicemgmt/server.resource

  We have a new Windows Server 2008 R2 machine onto which we have installed SCCM SP2 followed by the R2 package. We have enabled a mobile device management point and enabled distribution points to support mobile devices as per http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb680634.aspx We have also installed the Mobile Device Management Client on to a Windows Mobile 6.1 device. The client on the device fails to connect to the server. Our investigation so far has led us to the URL /devicemgmt/server.resource. However, looking in IIS on the server shows no such URL (in fact nothing apart from the aspnet_client directory) and visiting the URL with a browser returns 404. WebDav is enabled on the Default Web Site in IIS. BITS is installed on the server. Can anyone confirm whether enabling mobile device management will add visible directories to IIS and if so why it might be failing in our case?

• How to troubleshoot slow powerconnect 62xx management interface

  Our Dell Powerconnect 62xx switches have a very high packetloss on the management interface. I presume this is caused by a new appliance which uses multicast for communication but I am not sure. Our network setup is following: servers a - Dell PC6248 | servers b - Dell PC6248 |- juniper core router servers c - Dell PC6248 | What we see is that the multicast traffic arrives at all servers (but only the servers b use the multicast) and I fear that this multicast traffic floods the switch management interface. The switches' management interfaces are reachable via vlan101, all other traffic is sent over other vlans. When I tcpdump on one of the 2 servers with a vlan 101 ip address, I only get a few arp requests but almost nothing. When I try to ping between these 2 servers, it works like a charm. I would like to know what a good way is to troubleshoot this problem and maybe help me understand what is going wrong on that subnet.

• Should EICAR be updated to test the revision of Antivirus system?

  I'm posting this here since programmers write viruses, and AV software. They also have the best knowledge of heuristics and how AV systems work (cloaking etc). The EICAR test file was used to functionally test an antivirus system. As it stands today almost every AV system will flag EICAR as being a "test" virus. For more information on this historic test virus please click here. Currently the EICAR test file is only good for testing the presence of an AV solution, but it doesn't check for engine file or DAT file up-to-dateness. In other words, why do a functional test of a system that could have definition files that are more than 10 years old. With the increase of zero day threats it doesn't make much sense to functionally test your system using EICAR. That being said, I think EICAR needs to be updated/modified to be effective test that works in conjunction with an AV management solution. This question is about real world testing, without using live viruses... which is the intent of the original EICAR. That being said I'm proposing a new EICAR file format with the appendage of an XML blob that will conditionally cause the Antivirus engine to respond. The ultimate goal of speech synthesis systems is to pass a Turing test of hearing. Clearly, the state of the art in text-to-speech has much to improve. However, speech synthesis isn't restricted to just text-to-speech systems, and I'm wondering if other approaches have been tried with better success. In other words, has there been any work done (libraries, software, research papers, etc.) on natural speech synthesis other than text-to-speech systems?

• Should maven generate jaxb java code or just use java code from source control?

  We're trying to plan how to mash together a build server for our shiny new java backend. We use a lot of jaxb XSD code generation and I was getting into a heated argument with whoever cared that the build server should delete jaxb created structures that were checked in generate the code from XSD's use code generated from those XSD's Everyone else thought that it made more sense to just use the code they checked in (we check in the code generated from the XSD because Eclipse pretty much forces you to do this as far as I can tell). My only stale argument is in my reading of the Joel test is that making the build in one step means generating from the source code and the source code is not the java source, but the XSD's because if you're messing around with the generated code you're gonna get pinched eventually. So, given that we all agree (you may not agree) we should probably be checking in our generate java files, should we use them to generate our code or should we generate it using the XSD's?

  In order to measure Code Coverage for JavaScript unit tests, one needs to instrument the code, run the tests and then perform post-processing. My concern is that, as a result, you are unit testing code that will never be run in production. Since JavaScript isn't compiled, what you test should be precisely what you execute. So here's my question, how do you handle this? One thought I had was to run Unit Testing on the production code and use that for my pass fail. I would then create a shadow of my production code, with instrumentation and run my unit tests again; this would give me my code coverage stats. Has anyone come across a method that is a little more graceful than this?

  I've just came across an interesting collaborative coding issue at work. I've written some unit/functional/integration tests and implemented new functionality into application that's got ~20 developers working on it. All tests passed and I checked in the code. Next day I updated my project and noticed (by chance) that some of my test methods were deleted by other developers (merging problems on their end). New application code was not touched. How can I detect such problem automatically? I mean, I write tests to automatically check that my code still works (or was not deleted), how do I do the same for tests? We're using Java, JUnit, Selenium, SVN and Hudson CI if it matters.

• Hour-long shutdown duration "shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service"

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server that is a Hyper-V host (Dell PowerEdge T300). Today for the first time I encountered an odd situation; i lost connection with one of the guest machines but logging on physically it seems the guest OS is still running but no longer contactable via the network. I tried to shut down the guest machine (Windows XP) but it would not shut down, getting stuck in a "Not responding" dialog box that cannot be dismissed. I used the Hyper-V management console to reset the machine and it could not get out of resetting state. I tried to save another Windows 2003 guest machine, and it would be progress with its Saving state (0%). The other running Windows 2003 guest was stuck in the logon dialog. My first suspicion is perhaps one of the Windows update patches this week (10 Nov 2011) may something to do with it, which was still pending a system restart. Well, since I could not do anything with Hyper-V i proceeded with the Windows Update restart, and now it is stuck half an hour at "Shutting down hyper-v virtual machine management service" Prior to restarting I did not observe any hard disk errors reported in the system event log; doubt it is a disk-related condition. Shall I force a hard reboot? UPDATE Ok so i left it hanging over an hour while attending to other matters, and thankfully the host cleanly restarted. I can operate the guest machines fine now. Phew. Hyper-V must have been crawling for some reason. The VMs have been observed to become slow in the past when the host has been up for a long duration (two weeks to a month), but never this slow. Would love to know what types of performance monitoring items i can observe to give a hint why this can happen. UPDATE 2012-02-13 In the months ever since, Hyper-V has stalled into this state another two times. It appears so randomly and without any error event logs to hint what is causing it enter this "drunkard" state. Just an Hyper-V management service timeout. • Cannot run a JUnit test case containing threads from Eclipse

  I am running JUnit test case from Eclipse 3.4.1 . This test case creates a class which starts a thread to do some stuff. When the test method ends it seems that Eclipse is forcibly shutting down the thread. If I run the same test from the command line, then the thread runs properly. Somehow I do not remember running into such problems with Eclipse before. Is this something that was always present in Eclipse or did they add it in 3.4.x ? Here is an example: When I run this test from Eclipse, I get a few printts of the cnt (till about 1800) and then the test case is terminated utomatically.   Jeff's recent article linked to a time management example of the First Fit Decreasing algorithm, which talked about the Pareto principle (or, the 80/20 rule) of time management, that is, that 80% of the work we produce in 20% of our time. Now we've all heard the programmer quote: The first 90% of the code accounts for the first 90% of the development time. The remaining 10% of the code accounts for the other 90% of the development time. But all jokes aside, it is often as if 20% of your code is to do what you want, and the other 80% is to handle exceptions... so does the 80/20 rule really apply to developers? Does anyone have any examples of why it does / does not apply to us?

SVN management (authz, web viewer, commit log, diff) Create template projects (1 click e.g. create me a microsite with this name in svn and give these people access) Reporting on code churn, time spent on tasks on a per project basis User story management Basically like Team Foundation Server but that integrates with SVN properly (reason for this - we have a wide range of skill sets and not everyone can use a TFS client). Is there a combination of Trac plugins + something that can create trac instances (a la Dreamhost's admin panel) that can acheive this.   I was reading through 2010 CWE/SANS Top 25 Most Dangerous Programming Errors and one of the entries is for Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input. It suggests using a language with features to prevent or mitigate this problem, and says: For example, many languages that perform their own memory management, such as Java and Perl, are not subject to buffer overflows. Other languages, such as Ada and C#, typically provide overflow protection, but the protection can be disabled by the programmer. I was not aware that Java and C# differed in any meaningful way with regard to memory management. How is it that Java is not subject to buffer overflows, while C# only protects against overflows? And how is it possible to disable this protection in C#?
