    I have installed a linux distro and I "think" it is vulnerable to kernel exploits. I have to update kernel but I need to know if it is really compiled in year 2003? How can I know if additional updates are made to the kernel? Linux gandalf 2.4.21-4.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Oct 3 17:52:56 EDT 2003 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux Does also "smp" mean that it is safe from latest threats or something? Thank you.

  • Installing Sql Server 2005 SP2 - Getting error on analysis services component

    At first many of the components didn't install and I followed this workaround (fixing user/SID mappings in registry.) After that everything installed successfully except for analysis services. I am getting the exact same error message as before on analysis services. (Are there other users installed by sql server I'm not aware of perhaps?) Do you guys have any ideas? All of my searches seem to just point to that workaround above that I already did.   • Can the Windows 8.1 update be applied without local terminal?

    It is possible to access the Windows Store from a remote desktop session and initiate the Windows 8.1 Update from the Windows Store, but the update hangs after the first reboot, likely waiting for the user to accept the license check. This leaves the computer unusable remotely. Is there a way to pre-accept the license terms so that the update can complete autonomously? Perhaps an UNATTEND.XML such as would be used for an unattended clean install? Failing that, is there a way to connect with remote desktop during that phase of the install (it appears to be GUI-mode setup running with the usual Windows kernel and full OS)?

  • Semi-Hybrid Triple Channel DDR3

    I have 3 x Corsair 2GB DDR3 1600MHz, and I want to expand it with 3 more DIMMs. Obviously to keep my triple-channel, I'd be best to buy an identical 3 DIMMs kit as I have now, because triple-channel doesn't work with not-identical memory DIMMs, but to what level of difference? Can I have identical spec DIMMs (Corsair DDR3 1600MHz) but just 4GB beside my 2GB ones, and the triple-channel will still be active?

    LS, I have ESXi 4, with all the 2009 updates installed. When i try to update the last firmware update, i receive the following error: Copy of /bootbank/sys.vgz to /tmp/stage/firmware/bank/sys.vgz failed md5sum validation (8:02:31:29.332 cpu1:1787979) warning 20-Jan-10 9:42:02 PM I updated the vmware-tools separatedly, which succeeded. I receive this message if i use the update GUI, but also when using the CLI tool. I haven't got a clue how to solve this, anyone any ideas? Or having similar problems?

    I currently have my main hard drive split into two partitions. One being Windows 7 with about 600 GB of memory, the other Windows 8 Consumer Preview with about 50 GB. As you can guess it is set up for a dual boot. Today while looking up how to get the C# Facebook SDK for Metro apps I learned about the Release Preview being released. I was wondering: How do I go about getting rid of Windows 8 Consumer Preview and replacing it with the Release Preview? I know i can't just wipe it off my second partition because the dual boot uses Windows 8 to choose the operating system to boot.

  • After upgrading to Mac OS X Lion, I can't boot Windows anymore

    I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion and I can't run the installed Windows anymore. It seems the issue is that the Lion installation created extra partitions so the Windows partition has a different number one. It's disk0s4 instead of disk0s3 (if I recall correctly). Searching online found several discussions about it but only one with a proposed solution, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199099, essentially: bootrec.exe /FixMbr bootrec.exe /FixBoot bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd which didn't work. bootrec.exe /FixBoot claims that no windows partition has been found.

  • 64 Bit Windows drivers for Inspiron 1720

    Dell doesn't seem to offer 64 bit drivers specifically for the Inspiron 1720 (laptop). I'm going to be upgrading from Vista 32-bit to Windows 7 64bit and I want to pull down the necessary stuff before hand. Are there any Dell systems that are similar enough to the Inspiron 1720 that I can use for a baseline to make sure I still have Ethernet and WiFi after the reinstall? It doesn't matter if they are for Vista 64 or Windows 7. Identified hardware: Processor: Intel mobile Core 2 Duo T7500 Chipset: Intel Mobile 965 Express Wifi: Intel Pro Wireless Drive Controller: Intel Matrix Graphics: nVidia GeForce 8600M GT Bluetooth: Dell TrueMobile 355 + EDR Ricoh card reader I think anything else, the default Windows drivers will be sufficient. Now while surfing internet it goes to 70°C. Cleaned my motherboard - nothing; cleaned fan - nothing; replaced thermal paste - nothing; replaced thermal paste with care - still nothing. So I went to friend just to check if he doesn't have any spear fan, and he did. But with fan he had another processor that he didn't need and he wanted to give it to me, but I told him that I will think about this. So my CPU, he's CPU (Intel® Pentium® D Processor 820 (2M Cache, 2.80 GHz, 800 MHz FSB)). Question: which proccesor is better for gaming and for recording games?

  • Microsoft Basic Office 2007 Activation Keys won't work after re-installing on my Laptop

    So, I've upgraded my hard-drive on my laptop, and proceeded to grab my trusty copper-faced Official MS Office disk to do an install. I have three licenses with the fancy green-blue paper that identifies the license keys. Problem is, that for each of these license keys, when the Office 2007 software asks that I enter the "Product Key" it states: The key is incorrect. Verify that you have the correct key, and then retype it Why would Microsoft want to inhibit/prohibit re-installs on the same machine that the software was initially installed to? Incidentally, the same goofy error happens with each of the three valid product key (activation keys) that I enter.

  • Nvidia Optimus shows Nvidia card is always active in Windows 8

    I have loaded the new Asus Nvidia driver for my Asus Ux32VD that I have installed Windows 8 on. It has an Nvidia 620m and Intel hd 4000 integrated graphics. The problem is that the Optimus activity icon in my system tray shows that the Nvidia card is always active, though it shows that it is not doing anything. I can force the system to prefer the Intel graphics, and after rebooting, the Nvidia card will shut off, but then all the programs will be overridden and use the Intel graphics. Is anyone else having problems with Optimus in Windows 8? My battery life is really suffering because I'm always idling my Nvidia card while also presumably running the Intel card. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

One of the disks has now died, and rather than replace like for like, I'd like to replace both drives to increase the capacity (2 x 2Tb would be nice).     When installing windows 8 for the first time, I did not create a microsoft account and just installed as the local user. However I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and it forces you to use a microsoft account. I did not want to create an account so one of my friends used his and I logged in. After logging in all the friend's details like apps, wallpaper, lock screen, search mechanism, when I use search i see the friends facebook friends popping up. it is really annoying. How can I remove all of this excess, as I have logged out of the microsoft account and am just using local user but these problems have persisted. Thanks

    I'm a bit confused on what the license/deployment policy for Android is really like. Is it an open source OS in the same sense as let's say a normal Linux distro ?   • Office 2010 always reconfiguring itself on startup

    I've just installed Office 2010 Professional Plus (upgrading from Office 2007). It works fine under my admin account, but when I login with my wifes non-admin account, every time I open a document or start an app (Word, Excel, Publisher ...) Office 2010 goes through its configuration process (starting the the standard install dialog and then running the bootstrap process) before it loads the app - which wastes 2-3 minutes. Once it's done this, the app runs fine and I can make setting changes that are remembered when it restarts, but I can't work out why it thinks it needs to configure the app each time. Any thoughts?

    I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues?   • Xbox Music ignores Asus FN media keys in Desktop Mode

    I have an Asus PRO64JQ laptop, and I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The FN keys stopped working, so I tried to install default drivers using the CD that came with my laptop. Unfortunately, the CD does not support Windows 8. Asus Support does not help me either. It seems that Asus does not support Windows 8 on my model, since I can't find it in their list of Windows 8 upgradable models. Also, the support page of my laptop does not allow me to select Windows 8 as OS. That's why I'm asking my question here. I fixed (most of) the FN keys by installing the ATKPackage, and I was happy to find out that the media keys (play/pauze, next, previous) works with the Xbox Music app. But the keys only work in the Metro UI. In Desktop Mode, pressing FN+? (play/pause) starts up Windows Media Player. Disabling Windows Media Player through the control panel stops it from popping up, but Xbox Music still only responds to them in the Metro UI. I remember that I had similar problems when I tried to make these media keys to work with iTunes on Windows 7. The fix there was a small iTunes plug-in. So tell me, do you know how to fix my problem?
