• GetContactList stops reporting collisions on welded bodies

  I have some strange problem with my game which uses Box2D as physics engine and I'm out of ideas on what I can do to solve it. My game is a class assignment where I need to build a simple game where the main character moves in a 2D environment while square blocks comes from below him. Each time a collision occurs, that block is attached to the character using a weld joint, when three blocks of the same colors are together, they annihilate themselves(an effect similar to Bejeweled). I'm using a recursive function to iterate through all the attached blocks of a given block to see if there are enough blocks for them to be deleted. I'm using GetContactList function to iterate through the list of contacts to see which blocks are adjacent to each other. The results are quite disappointing, the blocks only get annihilated in few cases. After a lot of debugging, I found the issue, but I still don't know how to solve. My issue is: after some time, GetContactList STOPS returning contacts (return NULL) to blocks that were already attached for some time. I spent some time reading the Box2D manual as well as some tutorials and still didn't find any clue of what is happening. • HDMI video output not working for external monitor

  I have installed from scratch ubuntu GNOME 14.04 with gnome-flashback on my old HP HDX 16 laptop (core 2 duo p8600 + nvidia GT9600M + 4GB of ram) and I have problems with the HDMI output (I use it to extend my desktop on a dell U2412M 1920x1200 monitor). In the following I summarize the configurations that I have tried: Using the open source nouveau drivers, only the laptop monitor works, no signal from the external monitor connected to the HDMI output. However, the output of the xrandr command show that the HDMI output is connected with the correct resolution 1920x1200 (I find this thing really weird). Nouveau drivers with VGA connection works without problems on the external monitor, but the image is blurry compared to the HDMI connection. Using the nvidia drivers (I have tried different versions: nvidia-331-updates and the xorg-edgers versions nvidia-334 and nvidia-337) the HDMI output works, but I have system instabilities, random crashes and display freezes. I can't even enter in terminal mode with ctrl-alt-f1, so I have to manually shut down the laptop with the power button. I really would like to use the HDMI output with the nouveau drivers to avoid the system instabilities that I experienced with the nvidia drivers, but I can't figure out how to make it works. • What are the best ways to professionally increase your online presence?

  I've been hunting around the job market for a little bit now and I've been shocked by some of the things I am seeing. Software developers who make themselves more "known" online are getting far more and far better positions than people competing against them who are not as well "known" online. After doing some reading on the subject I realized that I actually shouldn't be so shocked by this. We are living in the most fast paced era of mankind and employers want to be able to learn as much as they can about a potential employee before they hire them. The easier we as software developers make it for us to be found it seems the better are chances of landing that dream job become. In some cases, employers are even finding us instead of us applying to them. So what are some of the best ways for me as a software developer to increase my online presence? I already hang around stack exchange sites such as programmers and stack overflow increasing my rep whenever I can. I maintain many open source projects as both a committer and project owner on Google Code and Github. I have a Twitter account, a website, and a blog. What else can I do to give myself a bigger online presence? Additionally, are there any good do's and don'ts for handling your web presence? Bashing your employer is an obvious don't but I'm interested in everything from the most basic to most subtle suggestions to give yourself a more appealing online presence. • How to troubleshoot a service failure?

  I get a GPF dialog box out of the blue fairly often (like about 2 hours after I turn on the computer). It basically says that svchost.exe had a failure... (see the corresponding Event Log entry below). Event Type: Error Event Source: Application Error Event Category: (100) Event ID: 1000 Date: 5/18/2010 Time: 7:41:16 PM User: N/A Computer: DKHA-IPSA Description: Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module ole32.dll, version 5.1.2600.5512, fault address 0x0004eaa9. Shortly after this error pops up, the computer pretty much grinds to a halt (e.g. some UI elements on the desktop simply do not respond). And I have to do a hard reboot. How do I troubleshoot this type of thing? P.S. The PC has all the latest patches and nothing is missing in the Device Manager.

• Apache 2.2 Windows XP Uninstall Doesn't Remove All Files

  Hello, I am trying to uninstall Apache 2.2 on Windows XP. The original installation was from the binary msi distribution. The uninstall function of the msi ran successfully, but it failed to remove a couple of folders: C:\Apache2.2\conf C:\Apache2.2\logs I am unable to remove these folders manually because they contain files for which I do not have ownership. And this is the source of my confusion: why if I installed the program do I not have permission to remove it? To be clear, I do not have local admin rights (nor can I request them), yet the files in these two remaining folders are owned by Administrator. How is it that Administrator created these files (and how can I possibly remove them)? Thanks, -aj

• What are the best strategies for selling Android apps?

  I'm a young developer hoping to sell my apps I made for Android soon. My applications are basically 99% finished so I'm investigating what would be the best marketing strategy to use to sell my apps. I'm sure the brilliant minds here can give me some great advice. I'm particularly interested in your thoughts on the following points (especially from experienced Android developers): Is it more profitable to sell an app for free with ads or to sell an app without ads for a price? Perhaps a combination of a free ad version and a paid ad-free version? If you give away an app for free with ads on it is it ethical to decline bending over backwards to support it? How much does piracy actually affect potential sales? Should any effort be put towards preventing it? Can you still make a profit off your application if you make it open source? Could you perhaps make more of a profit from the attention you would get by doing so? Is Google's Android Marketplace really the best place to release Android apps? It is worthwhile enough to maintain a developer blog or website to keep users updated on your development progress and software releases? Any other suggestions you could give me to maximize profit meanwhile keeping users happy and coming back for more would also be greatly appreciated. While I appreciate general tips and tricks, I'd like to ask that if possible you please go the extra step and show how they specifically apply to selling Android apps. Marketing statistics, developer retrospect, and any additional experience you can share from your time selling Android apps is what I would love to see most. • External HDD is always in use when trying to safely remove

  I have a WD 1TB Elements external hard drive and every time I use the Windows 7 "safely remove" feature, it gives me a dialog telling that a process is using the disk. Using Sysinternals Process Explorer and the answer on this question (find everything with the drive letter) I get the following result: What is the $Extend folder and why is it in use? How can I disable it? I cannot remove it using the command line (access denied). Edit: I've followed the instructions over here and under the registry key HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToBackup I have a Multi-String Value named IgnoreNTFS with data \$Extend* /s But this does not make any difference. Also this question is not about a server. Additionally I can tell that I use a program called mkv2vob to convert video files with a Matroska container into something my PS3 will play. I convert the source files straight from my external HDD, but I would expect if this program does not release the lock on the HDD, surely it cannot be locked if the process isn't even running?

  So, although you will be able to use your existing .NET skills to develop Metro apps, it turns out Microsoft are limiting Visual Studio 2011 Express to Metro-only. From the Express website: Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows 8 provides tools for Metro style app development. To create desktop apps, you need to use Visual Studio 11 Professional, or higher. Oh dear. To develop any sort of non-Metro application, you will need to pay for at least VS Professional. I suspect Microsoft (or at least, certain groups within Microsoft) have a very explicit strategy in mind. By making VS Express Metro-only, developers who don't want to pay for Professional will be forced to make their simple one-shot or open-source application in Metro. This increases the number of applications available for Windows 8 and Windows mobile devices, which in turn make those platforms more attractive for consumers. When you use the free VS 11 Express, instead of paying Microsoft, you provide them a service by making applications for Metro, which in turn makes Microsoft's mobile offering more attractive to consumers, increasing their market share. Of course, it remains to be seen if developers forced to jump onto the Metro bandwagon will simply jump ship to Android or iOS instead. At least, that's what I think is going on. With Microsoft, who really knows?

• Samba4 advice for production use

  I have an old Samba 3 + LDAP server installed that needs to be rebuilt. I'm weighting my options, and Windows Server seems too expensive at the moment, and Samba 4 appeared to be a nice option, coupled with the last Bind 9 that can dynamically add the computers to the DNS. I have about 30 workstations, so I still consider it a small network. My questions are: Is Samba 4 stable enough for production? It seems as if the Samba team is too cautious on when to call their version final, or even beta, as compared with other open source projects. What Linux distribution would you recommend to set it up? I usually use Ubuntu Server, but may use another one if installing / maintaining Samba 4 is better on that one.

• Supporting copy 'n paste in your Windows Phone app

  Some Windows Phone 7 owners already have the NoDo update, and others are getting it soon. This update brings, among other things, copy & paste support for text boxes. The user taps on a piece of text (and can drag in either direction to select more/less words), a popup icon appears that when tapped copies the text to the clipboard, and then at any app that shows the soft input panel there is an icon option to paste the copied text into the associated textbox. For more read this 'how to'. Note that there is no programmatic access to the clipboard, only the end user experience I just summarized, so there is nothing you need to do for your app's textboxes to support copy & paste: it just works. The only issue may be if in your app you use static TextBlock controls, for which the copy support will not appear, of course. That was the case with my Translator by Moth app where the translated text appears in a TextBlock. So, I wanted the user to be able to copy directly from the translated text (without offering an editable TextBox for an area where user input does not make sense). Take a look at a screenshot of my app before I made any changes to it. I then made changes to it preserving the look and feel, yet with additional copy support (see screenshot on the right)! So how did I achieve that? Simply by using my co-author's template (thanks Peter!): Copyable TextBlock for Windows Phone.   (aside: in my app even without this change there is a workaround, the user could use the "swap" feature to swap the source and target, so they can copy from the text box) Comments about this post welcome at the original blog.

• SQL 2005 Log Shipping - Was working, now isnt!

  Hello, I had log shipping working between two SQL 2005 server fine. I suspect that a job was added to the source server which backed up the transaction log to disk (nothing to do with the existing log shipping job). As I understand it, if you do this then log shipping will fail to work. Sure enough, it no longer works. I've deleted the job which had just been created. Log shipping still does not work. I've rebooted both servers and, again, Log shipping does not work. I'm at a loss now... all I get is the folloing error: The log shipping secondary database XXXXXXXXXX has restore threshold of 45 minutes and is out of sync. No restore was performed for 5882 minutes. Restored latency is 15 minutes. Check agent log and logshipping monitor information. Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

• How do you stay productive when dealing with extremely badly written code?

  I don't have much experience in working in software industry, being self-taught and having participated in open source before deciding to take a job. Now that I work for money, I also have to deal with some unpleasant stuff, which is normal of course. Recently I was assigned to add logging to a large SharePoint project which is written by some programmer who obviously was learning to code on the job. After 2 years of collaboration, the client switched to our company, but the damage was done, and now somehow I need to maintain this code. Not that the code was too hard to read. Despite problems - each project has one class with several copy-pasted methods, enormous if nestings, Systems Hungarian, undisposed connections — it's still readable. However, I found myself absolutely unproductive despite working on something as simple as adding logging. Basically, I just need to go through the code step by step and add some trace calls. However, the idiocy of the code is so annoying that I get tired within 10 minutes of starting. In the beginning, I used to add using constructs, reduce nesting by reversing if's, rename the variables to readable names—but the project is large, and eventually I gave up. I know this is not the task I should be doing, but at least reducing the mess gave me some kind of psychological reward so I could keep going. Now the trick stopped working, and I still have 60% of my work to do. I started having headaches after work, and I no longer get the feeling of satisfaction I used to get - which would usually allow me to code for 10 hours straight and still feel fresh. This is not just one big rant, for I really do have an actual question: Is there a way to stay productive and not to fight the windmills? Is there some kind of psychological trick to stay focused on the task, instead of thinking “How stupid is that?” each time I see another clever trick by the previous programmer? The problem with adding logging is that I actually have to understand what the code does, and doing so hurts my brain in an unpleasant fashion.

• Ubuntu 9.10 is not starting on netbook

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my external hard drive cause it's cool to be able to borrow a friend's laptop and be able to have my entire system. It works on the 2 systems i tested it on: my desktop and my mom's laptop. I had to work on something earlier so i borrowed my friend's netbook. I started it up, chose Ubuntu 9.10.20 and it got to the Ubuntu loading screen with the 3 people holding hands right before user selection then it suddenly went black. Naturally, i freaked out because it wasn't my laptop. I held the power button down and reset the netbook but the screen was still black, it didn't even show the BIOS. I repeated the process without my hard drive, and it was still black without the BIOS showing up. I had to remove the battery, plug it to a power source, and power up to start the netbook up again. Can anyone tell me what happened?

• RSync to WebDAV mounted volume very slow

  I have a mounted WebDAV store, which I am playing around with to try and put together my own pseudo-DropBox set up. However, it seems very slow to upload larger files (my bandwidth graph goes ok for a little bit, then just stops dead for long periods of time). Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering if the way it gets mounted makes rsync think it's a local drive or something and so may be chattier than it would be if it knew it was a mounted network drive? (I'm new to rsync so may be all wrong here!) I'm syncing using rsync -rv /source/directory/ /mounted/webdav/directory/ This is running using MacOS 10.6, and WebDAV is mounted using the native mounting mechanism.

• Only allow certain processes to connect to MS SQL

  I've lost the source code for a very old application that connects to a MS SQL-server for some SQL queries. Since the login is hard-coded in the application I can't change the username/password on the server. One day the password will probably be known to the users and we surely need to change it. But how? One idea is to only allow the old application to do the queries on the SQL server and block out any other application like the query analyzer etc. Can I set process permission somehow? The SQL server (MS SQL 2005) and application (C++) are on the same machine It's too costly to rewrite the old program Thanks for help!

  I have to connect two LANs: LAN1: 10.10.0.0/16 and LAN2: 192.168.0.0/16. I can't do simple routing, because 192.168.0.0/16 net is prohibited in LAN1, so I am thinking of using Full cone nat (1:1) to translate 192.168.x.y/16 to 10.11.x.y/16. Each translation is done by this rules: iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 10.11.0.0/16 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.0/16 iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/16 -j SNAT --to-source 10.11.0.0/16 But I will have to enter 254*254*2 rules, what will, I think, result in enormous performance degradation. So, is there a way to write such one-to-one translation with minimum number of rules?

  I am trying to install Visual Studio 2012 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine, but installation fails. I tried to install all version (premium, ultimate etc..) but getting below error. Machine is not domain joined and logged in as administrative user. I was using Security Essentials but turn it off before the installation. Installation source is from MSDN.   There are specific folders designed for specific tasks. /var/www holds your web sites, /usr/bin contains files to run your applications...yet I still find myself putting nearly all of my work in ~. Is it possible to overuse my home directory? Will it come back to haunt me? Anyone have a good link to an article of best practices for organizing your files so that they are placed in their "correct" place? Is there even such a thing in Linux? I am referring specifically to user-generated content. I do not compile applications from source, I use apt-get for those tasks. This article has a great introduction to what I'm looking for. Table 3-2, "Subdirectories of the root directory" is the sort of thing I'm looking for, but with more details/examples.

All Distros were direct download from their respective websites, I have tried both CD boot with all distros and USB boot with Arch only. I have just updated my BIOS as well an am still receiving the same error. The fact that it happens on CD and USB tell's me it's not an optical drive issue. All information I can find on this seems to relate to hard drives failing on already installed linux boxes or faulty SATA cables. I am a bit confused why this issue would be preventing a CD/USB boot though. Is there any more info I can provide that might help uncover the source of the problem? Cheers, Jon

• Suitable SDK to develop quick game?

  I'm currently undertaking a personal project at home that I need to turn around inside the next few months (which working full time and still learning programming makes it a tad difficult). I'm looking for suggestions on SDK's or tools (preferably free or that come with games, similar to steam tools) that I can use to develop a "game". I'm OK with coding but have no 3D development skills at all. I've very little experience with mod tools or SDK's at all but I'm hoping someone can point me in the direction of one that does the following: A decent library of prefab 3D models to build scenes. Ability to add scripting to the scene I've used Unity before and would prefer to continue to do so however I really have the worst 3D skills imaginable and can't waste time learning them. I'd be looking for pre-fab items that are both industrial and possibly more lush environments (trees etc). If it makes any difference (due to licencing and what-not) I WILL NOT be selling this game or marketing it in any way and I am a University Student if any places do educations licences. Another alternative would be to source free 3d models elsewhere but again while I'm still learning I have no idea where to look if someone could point me in the right direction I'll do the rest of the digging. • VS 2010 Security Warning When Opening My Own Projects

  Whenever I try to open my own projects in VS 2010 Express, I get the following message: You should only open projects from a trustworthy source I can click OK on the message and open the solution, but I would prefer to not get warned every time I open my solution. The files were not downloaded from the Internet; they are sitting right on my department's network drive. There's nothing to unblock if I look at the Properties window for the project file. Any tips for squashing this bug will be appreciated.

• Installing the AMD Proprietary Drivers broke my 12.10 desktop

  I decided to download and install the AMD Legacy Catalyst driver 12.6 from AMD's website. I ran the .run file and the GUI below in the second image appeared and I install it that way. On reboot, I saw the below first image, though I managed to open Firefox by Open the pictures by right click Open As. No windows, buttons, or launcher / environment. It took some time but I figured out how to remove the driver and got back to normal on the default open source drivers I had before. Purged the old drivers and reconfigured xorg to make sure. How should I be going about installing the AMD made drivers? Is it even compatible with Ubuntu 12.10 yet? And if so would I even need it for 3D heavy applications like Team Fortress 2, or other game applications? I didn't install Ubuntu just for Steam, I've been using it on and off for a few years. Valve has mentioned that they are working on graphics drivers with NVIDA, AMD, and Intel. Nvidia released their new driver on Steam Linux beta release. Is AMD supposed to also have a new driver coming out soon? I'm using an ATi Radeon HD 4850 1GB.
