• Why won't videos on a particular website play under Ubuntu 13.04?

  Very oddly, I cannot watch any videos a TV channel website, for example this one: http://www.kanald.com.tr/GalipDervis/Videolar/ I can see from the frame source that it contains an embedded Adobe Flash video and some Java scripts (all of which don't pose any problems elsewhere). I've tried different web browsers (Chrome/Chromium/Firefox), but it seems I have some sort of video codec problem in my system. I have installed all sorts of gstreamer plugins, codecs, etc. (maybe too many?) to avoid such problems, but strangely I can watch these videos using Linux Mint 15 Live Session on the same machine. I wonder how I can find out why a particular video (like this one) won't work on my system?

• Legality of copying information from a Wikia? [closed]

  I'm making a website that will act as a compendium for a video game. I noticed that a page from Wikia has a ton of useful content such as background stories and trivia for many of the "entities" in the game. According to their site: The text on Wikia sites is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike License 3.0 (Unported) (CC-BY-SA). I'm not a lawyer; so what is the legality of copying and pasting the information written there collaboratively by the hivemind, into my website? If needed I would not be opposed to pasting the content and providing a source link at the end of each paragraph. Can I paste the content into my site? Thanks for the help!

• Changing in pavucontrols tab "Recording" via command line

  I'm using pavucontrol to make changes in the "Recording". I'm changing the source (??) of a Loopback to Null-Output from "Internes Audio Analog Stereo" to "Monitor of Internes Audio Analog Stereo" see the screenshot http://picpaste.de/Bildschirmfoto_vom_2013-10-26_11_32_03-z0KwnFDE.png I'm now looking for a possibility to do this via command line. So far I've done the following: pactl load-module module-null-sink ? creates a new sink pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates a new sink input pactl load-module module-loopback ? creates another sink input pacmd move-sink-input 0 1 ? changes the sink of the sink-input (to Null-Output); this is like changing manually in the pacucontrol tab "Playback". It's just the last part (making the change like shown in the screenshot) via command line that I'm not able to do. I'd be very happy for any advice or suggestions. Thanks already!

• Library search paths

  This question originally started in an apparent problem in Cups calling various back-ends and using non-standard library search paths. If I want to change a library search path for a app running in a terminal I can use LD_LIBRARY_PATH, RPATH, etc., but if I want to change a library path for a Cups back end, I subsequently resolved the Cups issue, but I don't see any mechanism to change the search path whare an app is not running in terminal. For example Cups calls backendA and backendB to print on 2 printers, BackendA uses libxxx.1.15 and BackendB needs libxxx.1.05, is there any way to change the library search path for backendB (only) without recompiling backendB, (I may not have the source)? Any ideas?

I use jQuery, also I use date and time picker jQuery plugin in my cms, I can say this is just a 1% of my big script, I don't want sell my whole program as GPL because of these two small integrations (jQuery and DateTime picker). Please ask on these questions: I'm worry about license issue. What is the best way to sell my product(licensing type)? Is there any way to provide some partial licenses? I mean just add small notification in my license that the jQuery and The DateTime picker is still in GPL, but other part of this CMS has commercial license? • Extract sender activity from postfix logs for auditing user

  We have a mail user on our postfix server that was using the company mail to send compromising information to the competence. I've been asked to make a report of the actions for that user in the last time. There are tools like pflogsumm and others that can extract statistic data, but I haven't so far find anything useful to get all the info for a user because the data is in multiple lines. I'd like to get something like this: For the sent mail 11/11/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 11/11/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] For the received mail 10/10/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 10/10/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] I know I can do a script by myself, but matching the postfix ID for every mail is not something that can be made with a simple grep, and I've a lot of mail history that I have to recheck distributed among diferent files and so on.   We were looking for some topics related to audio analysis and found acoustic fingerprinting. As it is, it seems like the most famous application for it is for identification of music. Enter our manager, who requested us to research and possible find an algorithm or existing code that we can use for this very simple approach (like it's easy, source codes don't show up like mushrooms): Always-on app for listening Compare the audio patterns to a single audio file (assume sound is a simple beep) If beep is detected, send notification to server With a flow this simple, do you think acoustic fingerprinting is a broad approach to use? • GPL/LGPL/MPL non-code content license

  I want to use a dictionary (basically a text file, and no code) that is included with an open office spell checking plug-in. The plug-in is under the tri-license GPL/LGPL/MPL which I don't understand. is that legal? If it is illegal, what if I wrote a script that uses the said open office plug-in to generate the dictionary (assuming it's technically possible, the script will generate all possible letter permutations, passes it to the plug-in and saves the correct ones) ? I will be using the dictionary in a closed source commercial application. The dictionary is in a language that has very little resources online, and short of making my own dictionary, there aren't any alternatives. Clarification: The script idea I mentioned above, isn't a weird technique, I would generate a document with all possible words and use open office with the plug-in installed to show spelling mistakes and remove them, isn't this the intended use of the plug-in (spell checking)?

• Migrating JBoss installation and install it on a PHP server

  I'm configuring a new dedicated server that is going to run 3 sites, 2 of then are migrating from a old server. Each site have it's own domain and dedicated ip. 2 of this sites are already up and running on php (one of then use cakePHP), the third site is a migration from an old server and it runs on JBoss. 1) Is it possible to have both Jboss and php running on the same Apache instance, or would I have to install a new one? 2) Can I just move the old JBoss server directory to the new server and start the server with the shell script? From what I red here JBoss is distributed as a zip/tgz file with the server structure, so moving it from the old server to the new one should be the same. I want to do this because the old server is already configured, and it have 2 JBoss instances. I didn't develop this site and I don't have experience with JBoss. I have some documentation of the site, but it is not much, mostly server structure and the technology they used. The new server runs on CentOS with CPanel, I have full root access to the server. This question is similar to this one How can I run JBoss Application Server and Apache on the same server? but there he didn't have a dedicated IP for each domain.

• LINQ and ArcObjects

  Motivation LINQ (language integrated query) is a component of the Microsoft. NET Framework since version 3.5. It allows a SQL-like query to various data sources such as SQL, XML etc. Like SQL also LINQ to SQL provides a declarative notation of problem solving – i.e. you don’t need describe in detail how a task could be solved, you describe what to be solved at all. This frees the developer from error-prone iterator constructs. Ideally, of course, would be to access features with this way. Then this construct is conceivable: var largeFeatures = from feature in features where (feature.GetValue("SHAPE_Area").ToDouble() > 3000) select feature; or its equivalent as a lambda expression: var largeFeatures = features.Where(feature => (feature.GetValue("SHAPE_Area").ToDouble() > 3000)); This requires an appropriate provider, which manages the corresponding iterator logic. This is easier than you might think at first sight - you have to deliver only the desired entities as IEnumerable<IFeature>. LINQ automatically establishes a state machine in the background, whose execution is delayed (deferred execution) - when you are really request entities (foreach, Count (), ToList (), ..) an instantiation processing takes place, although it was already created at a completely different place. Especially in multiple iteration through entities in the first debuggings you are rubbing your eyes when the execution pointer jumps magically back in the iterator logic. Realization A very concise logic for constructing IEnumerable<IFeature> can be achieved by running through a IFeatureCursor. You return each feature via yield. For an easier usage I have put the logic in an extension method Getfeatures() for IFeatureClass: public static IEnumerable<IFeature> GetFeatures(this IFeatureClass featureClass, IQueryFilter queryFilter, RecyclingPolicy policy) { IFeatureCursor featureCursor = featureClass.Search(queryFilter, RecyclingPolicy.Recycle == policy); IFeature feature; while (null != (feature = featureCursor.NextFeature())) { yield return feature; } //this is skipped in unit tests with cursor-mock if (Marshal.IsComObject(featureCursor)) { Marshal.ReleaseComObject(featureCursor); } } So you can now easily generate the IEnumerable<IFeature>: IEnumerable<IFeature> features = _featureClass.GetFeatures(RecyclingPolicy.DoNotRecycle); You have to be careful with the recycling cursor. After a delayed execution in the same context it is not a good idea to re-iterated on the features. In this case only the content of the last (recycled) features is provided and all the features are the same in the second set. Therefore, this expression would be critical: largeFeatures.ToList(). ForEach(feature => Debug.WriteLine(feature.OID)); because ToList() iterates once through the list and so the the cursor was once moved through the features. So the extension method ForEach() always delivers the same feature. In such situations, you must not use a recycling cursor. Repeated executions of ForEach() is not a problem, because for every time the state machine is re-instantiated and thus the cursor runs again - that's the magic already mentioned above. Perspective Now you can also go one step further and realize your own implementation for the interface IEnumerable<IFeature>. This requires that only the method and property to access the enumerator have to be programmed. In the enumerator himself in the Reset() method you organize the re-executing of the search. This could be archived with an appropriate delegate in the constructor: new FeatureEnumerator<IFeatureclass>(_featureClass, featureClass => featureClass.Search(_filter, isRecyclingCursor)); which is called in Reset(): public void Reset() { _featureCursor = _resetCursor(_t); } In this manner, enumerators for completely different scenarios could be implemented, which are used on the client side completely identical like described above. Thus cursors, selection sets, etc. merge into a single matter and the reusability of code is increasing immensely. On top of that in automated unit tests an IEnumerable could be mocked very easily - a major step towards better software quality. Conclusion Nevertheless, caution should be exercised with these constructs in performance-relevant queries. Because of managing a state machine in the background, a lot of overhead is created. The processing costs additional time - about 20 to 100 percent. In addition, working without a recycling cursor is fast a performance gap. However declarative LINQ code is much more elegant, flawless and easy to maintain than manually iterating, compare and establish a list of results. The code size is reduced according to experience an average of 75 to 90 percent! So I like to wait a few milliseconds longer. As so often it has to be balanced between maintainability and performance - which for me is gaining in priority maintainability. In times of multi-core processors, the processing time of most business processes is anyway not dominated by code execution but by waiting for user input. • client website compromised, found a strange .php file. any ideas?

  I do support work for a web development company and I found a suspicious file today on the website of one of our clients called "hope.php" which contained several eval(gzuncompress(base64_decode('....'))) commands (which on a site like this, usually indicates that they've been hacked). Searching for the compromised site on google, we got a bunch of results which link to hope.php with various query strings that seem to generate different groups of seo terms like so: (the second result from the top is legitimate, all the rest are not) Here is the source of "hope.php": http://pastebin.com/7Ss4NjfA And here is the decoded version I got by replacing the eval()s with echo(): http://pastebin.com/m31Ys7q5 Any ideas where this came from or what it is doing? • Windows 7 64-bit Google Chrome Makes Desktop Unresponsive

  For the past 1-2 weeks my desktop becomes unresponsive sometimes. The problem seems to happen as I load a page in Google Chrome; it could be any page though today it happened when I tried to load a page with Flash content in it. The problem is not consistent and there is no pattern. I can do a virus scan using some software (not antivirus installed--never needed that) but I strongly suspect it is some software I installed or some Windows Update. This is a very powerful Dell Optiplex 990 with 16GB RAM, so Memory shouldn't be an issue. When the problem happens the cursor becomes spinning even over the taskbar and control alt delete takes a long time. Eventually I get a message that 'this program is not responding' with end/close and 'cancel' icon. But repeated end or cancel does nothing. Then the menu for ctrl alt del comes up. The rest of the applications keep running fine though I can't get to them because the cursor is the wait-cursor. What is happening? How can I find what exactly caused the problem? Thanks.

  I made a game, and I am currently making a game engine. I want them both to be completely free and open source. What license should I choose? I was reading a bit on GPL, but that seems to be more suited for system code and libraries, AFAIK, as it doesn't permit the use of code for proprietorial software - which, in turn, implies that the code can be used in the first place. I can see that, obviously, game engines can be considered libraries, and therefor be used, but what about game code? Is there an alternative to GPL?

• What algorithms would suit image colour summarization? [on hold]

  I would like to analyse a set of hundreds of thousands of product images (clothing, electronic goods etc) and retrieve the dominant colours in each. I'm only interested in the top 3 or 4 colours. The aim is to achieve a degree of certainty that x image is mostly red or image y is mostly orange and blue. The images are likely to be colour jpegs of reasonable quality and approximately 100kb in size. I would like to use C# and the solution should run on a Linux server, preferably using open source libraries. What image processing algorithms or techniques might help me achieve this?

• Terminal emulation has stopped working. Garbage escape chars

  To enable me to do some remote administration of our servers I started using a terminal emulation program called TouchTerm Pro on my iPhone. While not the smoothest experience, it has allowed me to leave my computer behind when going out of town, which makes the slightly painful experience worthwhile. As of late, the app unfortunately no longer works. Pressing up and down keys after logging on via ssh gives me garbage like ^[[A and ^[[B. Combinations with Ctrl - like you can see in the video - no longer works either. Writing full command lines and executing by the enter key works though. Being able to search my bash history was the difference between a usable app and endless frustration, so getting it to work is essential. The app has (of course) met its end of life, not getting updated anymore. I am not quite sure, which side (client or server) that has to be "fixed"/hacked to make the control sequences work again. But is there something I can do to make it work as intended? You can see a video of TouchTerm in operation here.

• keyboard intermittently stops working, even after reinstalling windows 7; possibly a Chrome issue?

  My keyboard intermittently stops working. Sometimes a couple of keys will work, but usually none. Sometimes if I mash a couple of the ctrl+alt+windows type keys randomly for a bit, the keyboard will let me type one more letter before stopping again. Sometimes the keys will open a program menu, but usually not. I have even completely wiped my machine and reinstalled windows 7; the problem continues. Specs: Intel iMac (early 2006, 2.0GHz, 2MB RAM, 240GB HD) running ONLY Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit (NOT through boot camp) and using a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II.) *Unplugging & reconnecting keyboard does NOT fix it. *Connecting a different keyboard does NOT fix it. That one won't work, either. *Drivers are up-to-date. Removing and reinstalling drivers does NOT fix it. *Restarting the computer does NOT fix it. In fact, when the Windows logon screen appears, they keyboard won't work, and neither will the icon to pull up the on-screen keyboard. Otherwise my mouse can click around just fine. I can only log onto a non-password protected account. *Generally, logging into as different Windows user fixes it. I can then log back on to my main user account and continue work for a few hours until it happens again. *Clearing my Chrome browsing data stopped the problem from recurring for a week or so. *I use Avira free antivirus software, and repeated scans turn up nothing fishy. *I have already REINSTALLED Windows 7 (not just a restore.) The problem returned after 2 days of use. The only thing I suspect is something in Google Chrome -- I used my google account to reload all my previous Chrome extensions, saved data, etc. (Chrome Extensions Installed: AdBlock, Better Google Tasks, DropBox, FB Photo Zoom, Google Mail Checker, StayFocusd.) Any ideas? Any at all?
