• How to call a WCF singleton service within a WCF singleton service without hanging?

  I have two services, one that calls another. Both are marked as singletons as follows: [ServiceBehavior(InstanceContextMode = InstanceContextMode.Single, ConcurrencyMode = ConcurrencyMode.Multiple)] public class Service : IService And I set these up with a ServiceHost as follows: ServiceHost serviceHost = new ServiceHost(singletonElement); serviceHost.Open(); When the parent service tries to call the child service on the same machine, the parent service hangs, waiting for the child service. I'm already considering moving away from the singleton model, but is there anything wrong with my approach? Is there an explanation for this behavior and a way out of it?

• OpenSSL "Seal" in C (or via shell)

  I'm working on porting some PHP code to C, that contacts a web API. The issue I've come across is that the PHP code uses the function openssl_seal(), but I can't seem to find any way to do the same thing in C or even via openssl in a call to system(). From the PHP manual on openssl_seal(): int openssl_seal ( string $data , string &$sealed_data , array &$env_keys , array $pub_key_ids ) openssl_seal() seals (encrypts) data by using RC4 with a randomly generated secret key. The key is encrypted with each of the public keys associated with the identifiers in pub_key_ids and each encrypted key is returned in env_keys . This means that one can send sealed data to multiple recipients (provided one has obtained their public keys). Each recipient must receive both the sealed data and the envelope key that was encrypted with the recipient's public key. What would be the best way to implement this? I'd really prefer not to call out to a PHP script every time, for obvious reasons.

• Edit Distance in Python

  I'm programming a spellcheck program in Python. I have a list of valid words (the dictionary) and I need to output a list of words from this dictionary that have an edit distance of 2 from a given invalid word. I know I need to start by generating a list with an edit distance of one from the invalid word(and then run that again on all the generated words). I have three methods, inserts(...), deletions(...) and changes(...) that should output a list of words with an edit distance of 1, where inserts outputs all valid words with one more letter than the given word, deletions outputs all valid words with one less letter, and changes outputs all valid words with one different letter. I've checked a bunch of places but I can't seem to find an algorithm that describes this process. All the ideas I've come up with involve looping through the dictionary list multiple times, which would be extremely time consuming. If anyone could offer some insight, I'd be extremely grateful. • Is AsParallel() good practice in a web environment?

  I have no doubt that for client applications, AsParallel() will bring some out-of-the-box performance gains. But what if I would use it in a web environment. Let's say I have a widget framework that loops over all widgets to get their data and render output. This would parallelize great no? I do have my doubts on using AsParallel() in this scenario. What if I have a large number of visitors for my site, isn't IIS going to use multiple threads to handle all requests? Aren't there going to be locking issues presented after a while, or threads dying because all processors are in use? It's just a thought, what do you think about this?

  What technique should we use to make the httpsession object not loaded heavily with data. Example : Request 1 ---- httpSession loaded with an arraylist of 50,000 different objects. session.setAttribute("data",arraylist); Request 2 ---- httpSession loaded with an arraylist of 40,000 different objects. session.setAttribute("data",arraylist); Assume the server is loaded heavily with multiple sessions and huge data in them. Let us say from my above example request1..1000 at a time. Which means 1000 session objects with huge data. What is the alternate way to solve instead storing them in session like this?

  I have the following ER Diagram for a bank database - customers may have several accounts, accounts may be held jointly by several customers, and each customer is associated with an account set and accounts are members of one or more account sets. What design rules are violated? What modifications should be made and why? So far, a few flaws I'm not sure about are: 1) Redundant owner-address attribute in AcctSets Entity. 2) This ER does not include accounts with multiple owners with different addresses.   Hi there, I'm fairly new to Objective C and Core Data and have a problem designing a case where players team up one-on-one and have multiple matches that end up with a specific result. With MySQL, I would have a Player table (player primary key, name) and a match table (player A foreign key, player B foreign key, result). Now how do I do this with Core Data? I can easily tie a player entity to a match entity using a relationship. But how do I model the inverse direction for the second player ref. in the match entity? Player Name: Attribute Match: Relationship Match Match Result: Attribute PlayerA: Relationship to Player (<- Inverse to Player.Match) PlayerB: Relationship to Player (<- Inverse to ????)   Hi,I want to run a windbg script that will accomplish the following: I want to track certain registers the moment an API is hit, without stopping due to timing issues. So , the moment the API is called, I want the script to open a logfile, echo the fact that the api is hit with the details of the parameters, and let it run till it hits the conditional brkpoint I've put at the API end, which simply closes the open logfile. Now , the problem is, I want to do this multiple times, w/o the previous logfile getting overwritten. Ideally, if there is some command which lets me specify that the name of the logfile (.logfile file) by the timestamp of that moment, my problem is solved. Can anyone help?

  Hi folks, I've been looking into popularity algorithms used on sites such as Reddit, Digg and even Stackoverflow. Reddit algorithm: t = (time of entry post) - (Dec 8, 2005) x = upvotes - downvotes y = {1 if x > 0, 0 if x = 0, -1 if x < 0) z = {1 if x < 0, otherwise x} log(z) + (y * t)/45000 I have always performed simple ordering within SQL, I'm wondering how I should deal with such ordering. Should it be used to define a table, or could I build an SQL with the ordering within the formula (without hindering performance)? I am also wondering, if it is possible to use multiple ordering algorithms in different occasions, without incurring into performance problems. I'm using Django and PostgreSQL. Help would be much appreciated! ^^

When another feature is running I then need to change the application, to restrict functionality. Use Case Example User can normaly edit unpaid records. If the application then runs a Payrun process (Long), I need to then change parts of the application to restrict functionality for a short period of time (eg. Make existing unpaid records readonly). • Several appdomains calling the same unmanged dll

  Our .NET 3.5 C# application creates multiple appdomains. Each appdomain loads the same unmanaged 3rd party dll. This dll reads a configuration file upon initialization. If the configuration changes during runtime, the dll must be unloaded and loaded again. This dll is not in our scope to rewrite correctly. Does each appdomain have access to a separtate copy of this unmanaged dll, or does Windows keep one copy of the dll and maintain a usage count? If the latter is is the case, how do we get each instance of the unmanaged dll to reflect its unique configuration?

• How to be sure that my MVC project is running on the correct version after upgrade to vs2010?

  I just installed visual studio 2010 and upgraded my MVC project (which was running on MVC RC2 in visual studio 2008). visual studio 2010 updated every project file to target the framework 4.0. But the system.web.dll is pointing to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft ASP.NET\ASP.NET MVC 2\Assemblies\System.Web.Mvc.dll in VS2010 object browser, I have every dll showing up in multiple versions as expected (3.5.0.0 and 4.0.0.0) except for the System.Web.Mvc dll which doesn't show any version and points to the path I mentioned above. Isn't this namespace point to the Framework folder like the System.Web namespace? C:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework.NETFramework\v4.0\System.Web.dll

  Looking for a quick and dirty way to parse Australian street addresses into its parts: 3A/45 Jindabyne Rd, Oakleigh, VIC 3166 should split into: "3A", 45, "Jindabyne Rd" "Oakleigh", "VIC", 3166 Suburb names can have multiple words, as can street names. See: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1739746/parse-a-steet-address-into-components Has to be in Java, cannot make http requests (e.g. to web APIs). EDIT: Assume that format specified is always followed. I have no issue with spitting incorrectly formatted strings back at the user with a message telling them to follow the format (which I've described above).

• Checking if MySQL Database data does not exist

  I have my songs set-up in my MySQL database. Each song is is either assigned multiple locations or has no locations at all. Only the songs that either have no locations assigned in the database or have the location assigned to the ones specified below should be pulled from the database. Hopefully when you understand my query below it will make sense SELECT s.* FROM roster_songs AS s LEFT JOIN roster_songs_locations AS sl ON sl.song_id = s.id WHERE EXISTS ( SELECT sl2.* FROM roster_songs_locations AS sl2 WHERE s.id != sl2.song_id ) OR ( sl.location_id = '88fb5f94-aaa6-102c-a4fa-1f05bca0eec6' OR sl.location_id = '930555b0-a251-102c-a245-1559817ce81a' ) GROUP BY s.id The query almost works except it pulls out of the database songs that are assigned to sl.location_id's that aren't specified in the above query. I think it has something to do with my EXISTS code picking them up... Any ideas how I can get this to work?

  I would like to use the new concurrent collections in .NET 4.0 to solve the following problem. The basic data structure I want to have is a producer consumer queue, there will be a single consumer and multiple producers. There are items of type A,B,C,D,E that will be added to this queue. Items of type A,B,C are added to the queue in the normal manner and processed in order. However items of type D or E can only exist in the queue zero or once. If one of these is to be added and there already exists another of the same type that has not yet been processed then this should update that other one in-place in the queue. The queue position would not change (i.e. would not go to the back of the queue) after the update. Which .NET 4.0 classes would be best for this?

(+ one database per client) one instance for all clients (+ one database for all clients) Former one is simple, but... "inefficient". How about the latter? (best practises, design patterns) How to separate client data? For example: worker "A" of client "1" has two documents, worker "B" of client "2" has three documents. How to build model associations to protect other users (and clients) data? I think joining every query with Client model is not a good solution.

• Codeigniter MVC controller architecture

  I'm building a site using CodeIgniter that largely consists of static content (although there will be a relatively small CMS backend, and there's code to handle localization/internationalization based on the domain used to access it). Typically, in a situation like this, I'd use a Pages controller that is in charge of rendering static content, but as there are a fair number of pages on the site (30+) it'd quickly end up containing lots of methods (assuming one per page). Should I break my Pages controller into multiple controllers (that perhaps inherit from it) according to different sections of the site? Should I organize methods differently in the Pages controller?   I'm using LINQ to SQLto import old DBF files into MSSQL. I'm reading all rows and adding them to database using ctx.MyTable.InsertOnSubmit(row) After reading phase is completed I have around 100 000 pending inserts. ctx.SubmitChanges() naturally is taking a long time. Is there any way to track progress of the ctx.submitchanges()? Can ctx.Log somehow be used for this purpose? Update: Is it possible to use ctx.GetChangeSet().Inserts.Count and track insert statements using the Log? Dividing ctx.SubmitChanges() into smaller chunks is not working for me, because I need transaction, all or nothing.   I've already done many configs where dictionaries are passed into services in the <parameters> block. But what I find myself needing right now is to build a NameValueCollection (allowing multiple entries with the same key) or a Collection of KeyValuePair objects. The reason for this is im not using this dictionary to look up b when given a, im basically using it to pass in a Tuple (pair) of (a,b) to be used later in code. Im kind of new to castle windor and I was wondering how i would go about making a List of KeyValuePair's injected, or a NameValueCollection injected.

  In my SSIS job, I have a need to accumulate a set of rows and commit them all transitionally when processing has completed successfully. If this was pure SQL, I would use a temp table inside a transaction. In SSIS there are a number of issues complicating this. It's difficult to have multiple components share the same transaction and having temp tables that do not exist at design time is a pain. If I use Recordsets inside SSIS for this purpose, there are other issues. My understanding is that an 'Execute SQL' component will re-initialize the Recordset when it runs, so I can't use that to append an additional row. Is there a way to create an OLE DB connection that references an in-memory Recordset? Is there a better way to achieve this result?
