• ActiveRecord Logic Challenge - Smart Ways to Use AR Timestamp

  My question is somewhat specific to my app's issue, but the answer should be instructive in terms of use cases for association logic and the record timestamp. I have an NBA pick 'em game where I want to award badges for picking x number of games in a row correctly -- 10, 20, 30. Here are the models, attributes, and associations in-play: User id Pick id result # (values can be 'W', 'L', 'T', or nil. nil means hasn't resolved yet.) resolved # (values can be true, false, or nil.) game_time created_at *Note: There are cases where a pick's result field and resolved field will always be nil. Perhaps the game was cancelled. Badge id Award id user_id badge_id created_at User has many awards. User has many picks. Pick belongs to user. Badge has many awards. Award belongs to user. Award belongs to badge. One of the important rules here to capture in the code is that while a user can be awarded multiple streak badges (e.g., a user can win multiple 10-streak badges), the user CAN'T be awarded another badge for consecutive winning picks that were previously granted an award badge. One way to think of this is that all the dates of the winning picks must come after the date that the streak badge was awarded. For example, let's pretend that a user made 13 winning picks from May 5 to May 8, with the 10th winning pick occurring on May 7, and the last 3 on May 8. The user would be awarded a 10-streak badge on May 7. Now if the user makes another winning pick on May 9, the code must recognize that the user only has a streak of 4 winning picks, not 14, because the user already received an award for the first 10. Now let's assume that the user makes 6 more winning picks. In this case, the code must recognize that all winning picks since May 5 are eligible for a 20-streak badge award, and make the award. Another important rule is that when looking at a winning streak, we don't care about the game time, but rather when the pick was made (created_at). For example, let's say that Team A plays Team B on Sat. And Team C plays Team D on Sun. If the user picks Team C to beat Team D on Thurs, and Team A to beat Team C on Fri, and Team A wins on Sat, but Team C loses on Sun, then the user has a losing streak of 1. So when must the streak-check kick-in? As soon as a pick is a win. If it's a loss or tie, no point in checking. One more note: if the pick is not resolved (false) and the result is nil, that means the game was postponed and must be factored out. With all that said, what is the most efficient, effective and lean way to determine whether a user has a 10-, 20- or 30-win streak?

• Ruby on Rails is complaining about a method that doesn't exist that is built into Active Record. Wha

  This will probably just be a simple problem and I am just blind or an idiot but I could use some help. So I am going over some basic guides in Rails, reviewing the basics and such for an upcoming exam. One of the guides included was the sort-of-standard getting started guide over at guide.rubyonrails.org. Here is the link if you need it. Also all my code is for my app is from there, so I have no problem releasing any of my code since it should be the same as shown there. I didn't do a copy paste, but I basically was typing with Vim in one half of my screen and the web page in the other half, typing what I see. http://guides.rubyonrails.org/getting_started.html So like I said, I am going along the guide when I noticed past a certain point in the tutorial, I was always getting an error on the site. To find the section of code, just hit Ctrl+f on the page (or whatever you have search/find set to) and enter "accepts_". I do note that they are a bit out of date, but the default Rails install any of the school machines (an environment likely for my exam) is basically 'gem install rails --version 2.2.2' and since they are windows machines, they come with all the normal windows ruby gems that comes with the ruby installer. • Slicing a time range into parts

  First question. Be gentle. I'm working on software that tracks technicians' time spent working on tasks. The software needs to be enhanced to recognize different billable rate multipliers based on the day of the week and the time of day. (For example, "Time and a half after 5 PM on weekdays.") The tech using the software is only required to log the date, his start time and his stop time (in hours and minutes). The software is expected to break the time entry into parts at the boundaries of when the rate multipliers change. A single time entry is not permitted to span multiple days. Here is a partial sample of the rate table. The first-level array keys are the days of the week, obviously. The second-level array keys represent the time of the day when the new multiplier kicks in, and runs until the next sequential entry in the array. The array values are the multiplier for that time range. [rateTable] => Array ( [Monday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) [Tuesday] => Array ( [00:00:00] => 1.5 [08:00:00] => 1 [17:00:00] => 1.5 [23:59:59] => 1 ) ... ) In plain English, this represents a time-and-a-half rate from midnight to 8 am, regular rate from 8 to 5 pm, and time-and-a-half again from 5 till 11:59 pm. The time that these breaks occur may be arbitrary to the second and there can be an arbitrary number of them for each day. (This format is entirely negotiable, but my goal is to make it as easily human-readable as possible.) As an example: a time entry logged on Monday from 15:00:00 (3 PM) to 21:00:00 (9 PM) would consist of 2 hours billed at 1x and 4 hours billed at 1.5x. It is also possible for a single time entry to span multiple breaks. Using the example rateTable above, a time entry from 6 AM to 9 PM would have 3 sub-ranges from 6-8 AM @ 1.5x, 8AM-5PM @ 1x, and 5-9 PM @ 1.5x. By contrast, it's also possible that a time entry may only be from 08:15:00 to 08:30:00 and be entirely encompassed in the range of a single multiplier. I could really use some help coding up some PHP (or at least devising an algorithm) that can take a day of the week, a start time and a stop time and parse into into the required subparts. It would be ideal to have the output be an array that consists of multiple entries for a (start,stop,multiplier) triplet. For the above example, the output would be: [output] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [start] => 15:00:00 [stop] => 17:00:00 [multiplier] => 1 ) [1] => Array ( [start] => 17:00:00 [stop] => 21:00:00 [multiplier] => 1.5 ) ) I just plain can't wrap my head around the logic of splitting a single (start,stop) into (potentially) multiple subparts.

• Pass MSBuild condition to library project

  I have tried several solutions for this problem. Enough to know I do not know enough about MSBuild to do this elegantly but I feel like there should be a method. I have a set of libraries for working with .net projects. A few of the projects utilize System.Web.Mvc - which recently released Version 2 - and we are looking forward to the upgrade. Currently sites which reference this library reference it directly by the project(csproj) on the developer's computer - not a built version of the library so that changes and source code case easily be viewed when dealing code from this library. This works quite well and would prefer to not have to switch to binary references (but will if this is the only solution). The problem I have is that because of some of the functionality that was added onto the MVC1 based library (view engines, model binders etc) several of the sites reliant on these libraries need to stay on MVC1 until we have full evaluated and tested them on MVC2. I would prefer to not have to fork or have two copies on each dev machine.   i have installed minGW on my PC according to http://netbeans.org/community/releases/72/cpp-setup-instructions.html, and i have "restored defaults" using NetBeans 7.2 who has found all necessary files.   Editing my question for conciseness and to update what I've done: How do I model having multiple Addresses for a Company and assign a single Address to a Contact, and be able to assign them when creating or editing a Contact? I want to use nested attributes to be able to add an address at the time of creating a new contact. That address exists as its own model because I may want the option to drop-down from existing addresses rather than entering from scratch. I can't seem to get it to work. • Source code versioning with comments (organizational practice) - leave or remove?

  Before you start admonishing me with "DON'T DO IT," "BAD PRACTICE!" and "Learn to use proper source code control", please hear me out first. I am fully aware that the practice of commenting out old code and leaving it there forever is very bad and I hate such practice myself. But here's the situation I'm in. A few months ago I joined a company as software developer. I had worked in the company for few months as an intern, about a year before joining recently. Our company uses source code version control (CVS) but not properly. Here's what happened both in my internship and my current permanent position. Each time I was assigned to work on a project (legacy, about 8-10 years old). Instead of creating a CVS account and letting me check out code and check in changes, a senior colleague exported the code from CVS, zipped it up and passed it to me. While this colleague checks in all changes in bulk every few weeks, our usual practice is to do fine-grained versioning in the actual source code itself (each file increments in versions independent from the rest). Whenever a change is made to a file, old code is commented out, new code entered below it, and this whole section is marked with a version number. Finally a note about the changes is placed at the top of the file in a section called Modification History. Now the problem is this. In the project I'm working on, I needed to copy some new source code files from another project (new in the sense that they didn't exist in destination project before). These files have a lot of historical commented out code and comment-based versioning including usually long or very long Modification History section. Since the files are new to this project I decided to clean them up and remove unnecessary code including historical code, and start fresh at version 1.0. (I still have to continue the practice of comment-based versioning despite hating it. And don't ask why not start at version 0.1...) I have done similar something during my internship and no one said anything. My supervisor has seen the work a few times and didn't say I shouldn't do such clean-up (if at all it was noticed). But a same-level colleague saw this and said it's not recommended as it may cause downtime in the future and increase maintenance costs. An example is when changes are made in another project on the original files and these changes need to be propagated to this project. With code files drastically different, it could cause confusion to an employee doing the propagation. It makes sense to me, and is a valid point. I couldn't find any reason to do my clean-up other than the inconvenience of a ridiculously messy code. So, long story short: Given the practice in our company, should I not do such clean-up when copying new files from project to project? Is it better to make changes on the (copy of) original code with full history in comments? Or what justification can I give for doing the clean-up? • jQuery tablesorter sorting not working

  I'm using jQuery tablesorter plugin to generate dynamically a table from a csv file, and that part is working fine. However whenever i try to sort the table by clicking on the table headers, firebug reports this problem in the console: parsers is undefined return parsers[i].type;\n Initially i though this problem was being caused by the table not being ready after the document loads, so i fixed that by manually calling tablesorter() after my table was rendered from the csv file. this didn't fix the issue though. Also, at the very end of the table, the table is drawn garbled with some gray areas at the end. I suppose this is related to the error above. • data not reloading into tableview from core data on minor update

  I've got a basic photo album application, on the first view a list of albums is displayed with a subtitle showing how many images are in each album. I've got everything working to add albums, and add images to albums. The problem is that the image count lines are accurate whenever the app loads, but I can't get them to update during execution.   I have a link button in a repeater control. the li element is drag and droppable using jquery. when the page loads the the link button works perfectly, the jquery that is attached and the server side code both execute. when I perform a drag and drop then click on the link button it doesn't not fire. when i click it a second time it does fire.   I am newbee with PHP and MySQL and need help... I have two tables (Staff and Position) in the database. The Staff table (StaffId, Name, PositionID (fk)). The Position table is populated with different positions (Manager, Supervisor, and so on). The two tables are linked with a PositionID foreign key in the Staff table. I have a staff registration form with textfields asking for the relevant attributes and a dynamically populated drop down list to choose the position. I need to insert the user's entry into the staff table along with the selected position. However, when inserting the data, I get the following error (Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails). How do I insert the position selected by the user into the staff table? I'm playing around with an Ajax powered search engine trying to find the best tradeoff between data-volume and client-side processing time. This way I'm getting by without the page stalling for about 2-3 seconds, while JQM enhances all elements in the search results. • How can I provide maximum integration between a calendar-like webapp and desktop calendar applicatio

  I've been assigned to upgrade/rewrite a webapp that my company uses to schedule conference calls. One of the goals of the upgrade is to improve integration between the application and our user's Outlook calendars (and ideally other calendar programs as well). At present, when a user is viewing the details of a scheduled conference call on the webapp, they can click an "Add to Outlook calendar" link, which points them to a dynamically generated .ical file. On most of our users' systems, Outlook opens the file by default, bringing up the "create calendar appointment" window with the concall information pre-populated. This link creates a 1-time appointment only, and has to be clicked on for each occurrence of the call. So if a call happened every Monday in June, you would have to click 4 links to add all the appointments to your calendar. This is the full extent of our current level of integration. Ideally, we will be able to upgrade the system so that users can "subscribe" to a con call, which would mean not just the current call, but all calls in a reoccurring series would appear in the user's calendar with a single click. If one call in a series was cancelled, or rescheduled, that call's appointment would change in the users' calendar, without the user having to do anything, and without upsetting the rest of the series' appointments. Also, any changes to the call's info (say, the phone number was changed) would automatically be updated in the Outlook calendars of anyone who subscribed, without them having to come back to the webapp to double-check that their information is up to date. Ideally this would also work with other popular calendar programs, as well as Google Calendar. I don't know if we'll be able to achieve that level of integration, but I'd like to get as close to that as we can. Additional details and challenges: We aren't running Exchange on a public server, and I'm not likely to be able to get that changed Assume that our users are basically "the general internet public". Our users are not members of our office's network, nor can they be. We can't set up network logins or Exchange accounts for them. Some of our users are not using Outlook, but some other calendar program. Of the ones that are using Outlook, not all are using the same version. We have users in more than 50 countries that are using this webapp. Synchronization would be one-directional. Nobody can make changes in their own calendars and expect the server to reflect them/replicate them to other users Current conference calling application is written in ColdFusion. Rewrite will probably be in ASP.NET, but I haven't confirmed that yet. Solutions that work with either or both technologies are appreciated. I know that .ical files can theoretically contain more than one event, but in my own experiments I haven't had success in getting Outlook (2003) to add more than one event at a time using the .ical file method. Maybe someone knows how to set up a multi-event .ical file that Outlook will accept? Could a link to such an .ical file be "subscribed" to? Is there such thing as a calendar RSS feed? Could I simulate running an exchange server? Any other ideas? Thanks everyone!

  After trying to work on someone else's code, and so many different iterations, I am unable to understand what am I doing wrong with dates on a calendar month view. I am trying to present a calendar in month view fashion like calendar.app but unfortunately some users in countries like Australia, UK are reporting incorrect alignment of Days to Dates. For instance in Australia it displays 17th March as Friday. Any help is highly appreciated!   I am trying to perform several operations on the myList list of lists below and am having some trouble figuring it out. Create a new list in the newList list of lists if the values in the lists meet the following conditions: multiple lists that match on `myList[i][0]` and `myList[i][7]` but with have (1) sums of `myList[i][3]` and `myList[i][4]` and (2) sums of `myList[i][5]` and `myList[i][6]` that are different from each other are just listed as is in newList if multiple lists match on both `myList[i][0]` (this is the type) and `myList[i][7]` (this is the date) are the same then create a new list for each set of lists with mathcing `myList[i][0]` and `myList[i][7]` that have (1) sums of `myList[i][3]` and `myList[i][4]` and (2) sums of `myList[i][5]` and `myList[i][6]` that are different from the other lists with mathcing `myList[i][0]` and `myList[i][7]`. I also am trying to concatenate `myList[i][1]` separated by a ':' for all those lists with matching `myList[i][0]` and `myList[i][7]` and with sums of `myList[i][3]` + `myList[i][4]` and `myList[i][5]` + `myList[i][6]` that match. So essentially for this case only those lists in `myList` with sums of `myList[i][3]` + `myList[i][4]` and `myList[i][5]` + `myList[i][6]` are different from the other lists are then listed in newList. The above newList illustrates these results I am trying to achieve. If anyone has any ideas how to do this they would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
