• Can someone explain this "endian-ness" function for me?

  Write a program to determine whether a computer is big-endian or little-endian. bool endianness() { int i = 1; char *ptr; ptr = (char*) &i; return (*ptr); } So I have the above function. I don't really get it. ptr = (char*) &i, which I think means a pointer to a character at address of where i is sitting, so if an int is 4 bytes, say ABCD, are we talking about A or D when you call char* on that? and why? Would some one please explain this in more detail? Thanks. So specifically, ptr = (char*) &i; when you cast it to char*, what part of &i do I get?

• UI Controls layer on top of operating system.

  I'm kind of curious about what layer writing a UI platform to the level of Win32 or the X Windowing System would fall in the grand scheme of an operating system. What layers below do they primarily make use of, is it heavily based on direct communication with the graphics card driver (I can't imagine going though a rendering pipeline like OpenGL for this), or is there a graphical platform as part of the operating system which extracts this out a little more. I'm also interested in the creation of shells and the like, and I"m particularly curious as to how people go about creating alternative shells for windows, what do people look for when figuring out what methods to call or what to hook into, etc? I guess I'm fairly lost at these concepts and finding it difficult to find documentation on them. I was initially excited to have taken Operating Systems in college but it was all low level resource management stuff. Thanks all, Mason

• Converting app to MVC and running it in both console and gui

  I have a simple java gui calculator, with 3 number systems (there are some bugs but that doesn't matter now). Currently all code is in one file. My task is to rewrite it as MVC, and add possibility to run it in either gui or console mode. How should I divide this program to organise it as M-V-C ? Is it written properly enough to add console functionality to it? (guess I'll have to change all methods invoking to JLabel Output to something simply storing an output String as a model argument and then having View to get it).   im trying to burn DVD/CD through frontend C#.net code... i have used IMAPI2 for buring CD/DVD in windows XP..but it is giving me unhandeled exception... as:- System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast COM object of type 'IMAPI2.Interop.MsftFileSystemImageClass' to interface type 'IMAPI2.Interop.MsftFileSystemImage'. This operation failed because the QueryInterface call on the COM component for the interface with IID '{7CFF842C-7E97-4807-8304-910DD8F7C051}' failed due to the following error: No such interface supported (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80004002 (E_NOINTERFACE)) can anyone plz help me out to solve this pbm...im not able to solve this error.. this project is working fine in Windows7 but unable to work with XP...???

  I want javascript to be separated from views. Got requirement to implement localization for simple image button generated by JS: <img src="..." onclick="..." title="Close" /> What's the best technique to localize title of it? P.s. Found a solution by Ayende. This is the right direction. Edit: I got Localization helper class which provides Controller.Resource('foo') extension method. Thinking about to extend it (helper) so it could return all JavaScript resources (from "ClientSideResources" subfolder in App_LocalResources) for specified controller by it's name. Then - call it in BaseController, add it to ViewData and render it in Layout. Would that be a good idea?

• Using EXSLT dates-and-times module in XSLT 1.0 yields unknown error

  I added the EXSLT dates-and-times module in my XSLT 1.0 file by declaring: <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" ... xmlns:date="http://exslt.org/dates-and-times" extension-element-prefixes="date"> This doesn't affect my resulting page, but when I try to call the actual date with: <xsl:value-of select="date:date-time()"/> I receive an "Error loading stylesheet: An unknown error has occurred ()" message when loading my page. Does anyone have a suggestion as to what I might be missing? Thanks in advance!

  My understanding is that template argument deduction is only for function templates, but function templates does not allow partial specialization. Is there a way to achieve both? I basically want to achieve a function-like object (can be a functor) with the signature template<class InputIterator1, class InputIterator2, class OutputIterator, int distribution> void GetQuantity(InputIterator1 frist1, InputIterator1 last1, InputIterator2 first2, OutputIterator result, double supply, double limit); Depending on the value of distribution, I want to have a couple of specializations of this template. And when I call this function,I basically do not want to specify all the type parameters, because they are many of them (and thus I need argument deduction)!

  Hello, I have downloaded ffmpeg libraries for iPhone and compiled them. My objective is to create a movie file from a series of images using ffmpeg libraries.The amount of documentation for ffmpeg on iphone is very less. I checked an app called iFrameExtractor, which does the opposite of what i want, it extracts frames from a video. On the command line there is a command called ffmpeg -f image2 -i image%d.jpg video.mov This turns a series of images into a video. I actually checked it on my mac and it works fine. What i wanted to know was how do we get the equivalent in iPhone. Or rather which class/api or method to call. There are a couple of examples of apps doing this on iPhone.   I have a aspx page which contains a User Control uc1 ans within uc1, there is another user control uc2. Now I need to call a javascript function in the uc2's page load. (I understand that the Pages are not properly designed, but I am sorry as this is an old application, I am not supposed to make any changes in the design) I am doing this using ScriptManager.RegisterStartUpScript as I have an update panel, but the function is not being called and the script error "load is not defined" is fired. (load is the javascript function in uc2) Can anyone help me out with this? Thank you.

  We need to create a simple web service in ASP.NET that can be called from PHP or other languages. This in turn will be used to update records in a database for an item submission. The core part is fairly simple, we have a base set of fields for the object - first name, last name, birth date, city, etc. In addition however we need to accept a list of items associated with that object that can range from 0-n. Jan 1 2009, ABC May 1 2010, 123 Jun 30 2010, XXXXX What would be the best way to structure this so it can be easily passed to the ASP.NET web service and processed as a single call for the entire object? • How come BraceMatch() doesn't work when a lexer is set in wxStyledTextCtrl?

  I have the following chunk of C++ code that gets called when } is pressed: int iCurPos = GetCurrentPos(); InsertText(iCurPos,wxT("}")); int iPos = BraceMatch(iCurPos); This works fine (iPos gets the position of the matching brace) except when I call SetLexer(...) beforehand. Then it returns -1? How can I get it to work? Edit: I should point out that the above code is being called from the EVT_KEY_DOWN handler in a wxStyledTextCtrl-derived class.

• XSLT: Is there a way to "inherit" canned functionality?

  i am once again having to cobble together a bit of XSLT into order to turn generated XML into (rather than simply generating HTML). i'm having huge deja-vu this time again. i'm once again having to solve again basic problems, e.g.: how to convert characters into valid html entity references how to preserve whitespace/carriage returns when converting to html how to convert to HTML as opposed to xhtml how to convert dates from xml format into presentable format how to tear apart strings with substring This is all stuff that i've solved many times before. But every time i come back to XSLT i have to start from scratch, re-inventing the wheel every time. If it were a programming language i would have a library of canned functions and procedures i can call. i would have subroutines to perform the commonly repeated tasks. i would inherit from a base class that already implements the ugly boilerplate stuff. Is there any way in XSLT to grow, expand and improve the ecosystem with canned code?

• Use of COM object in IIS 7

  Hi all, I am currently moving an ASP.NET web-project from an IIS 6 to a IIS 7 hosting environment. Everything seems to be running OK, except my calls to a COM object. I can perfectly instantiate an object of the COM type, but when I call one of its methods, the IIS crashes. The event log reports an error code "0xc0000374", which indicates a heap corruption. When I run the application inside the visual studio development server, everything goes well and the COM object code gets executed without any errors. This is also the case when the application is hosted on an IIS 6 machine. I have looked through all settings of the IIS 7 and have not found anything configurable for COM objects, like security or ... I have been struggling with this for a while and I'm out of ideas. Does anyone have any experience deploying COM objects on IIS 7? Your help would be very appreciated!

• Output Flash Trace to Firebug Console

  Hello, I am trying to output my Flash application's trace to the firebug console. After some Goggling I have found that other are doing something like this: public static function debug(text: Dynamic):Void { trace(text); ExternalInterface.call("console.log", text.toString()); } My Firebug console never outputs anything and always just shows "Please Reload Page to enable..." So, of coarse, I have reloaded the page and it does not seem to change anything. I have the correct Object imported into the calling class. I am running FireBug 1.4.2.   For some reason I cannot get cPickle.load to work on the file-type object returned by ZipFile.open(). If I call read() on the file-type object returned by ZipFile.open() I can use cPickle.loads though. I do not see any reason why it should ever hang?

  Well, first I should probably ask if this is browser dependent. I've read that if an invalid token is found, but the section of code is valid until that invalid token, a semicolon is inserted before the token if it is preceded by a line break. However, the common example cited for bugs caused by semicolon insertion is: return _a+b; which doesn't seem to follow this rule, since _a would be a valid token. On the other hand, breaking up call chains works as expected: $('#myButton') .click(function(){alert("Hello!")}); Does anyone have a more in-depth description of the rules?

• Scoping inside Javascript anonymous functions

  I am trying to make a function return data from an ajax call that I can then use. The issue is the function itself is called by many objects, e.g.: function ajax_submit (obj) { var id = $(obj).attr('id'); var message = escape ($("#"+id+" .s_post").val ()); var submit_string = "action=post_message&message="+message; $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: document.location, data: submit_string, success: function(html, obj) { alert (html); } }); return false; } Which means that inside the anonymous 'success' function I have no way of knowing what the calling obj (or id) actually are. The only way I can think of doing it is to attach id to document but that just seems a bit too crude. Is there another way of doing this?
