• Why is my Wifi connection slower than ethernet even though bandwidth should saturated?

  I'm wondering why it is that my wireless connection is slower than my wired connection for things going to the outside world (so, not files being transferred within the network), which is should be faster than the outside connection, which, I would think, would mean that downloading something like an ISO or other large file from the Internet should be the same either way since that should saturate the connection anyway. Does it have something to do with the encryption (WPA)? Could it have something to do with MTU since the MTU for ethernet can be in the range of 1500 to 9000 bytes, and 2304 bytes for 802.11? Do wireless packets have to be buffered, whereas this wouldn't be an issue with ethernet? What's the math behind the difference?

• Roaming profile location not updating

  We have roaming profiles enabled for some users. We want to move some of them over to a new network share. We have copied the files to the location (using Windows backup so that permissions are retained) and we've changed the location in active directory (see screenshot 1). When the user logs in to windows 8 their documents folders still points to the old server (server names removed from the picture but you can see the path is different). The user has logged off and logged back on, and has also run GP update (followed by a shutdown/restart) What do I need to do to make Windows 8 recognise the change?

• Unable to start lightdm but can startx

  I am trying to make my own Live USB and I have successfully generated an ISO file with a newly installed, configured and customized Xubuntu 12.04 LTS installation. My problem is that, no matter I boot the ISO in VirtualBox or in GRUB with loopback, it just cannot start the lightdm. When booting, I can see the log messages on the screen, it stucks at Stopping System V compablities or Configuring Network security. And tty7 is frozen... If I switch to tty1, I can get a logged-in shell as ubuntu@ubuntu. The weird thing is: When I type sudo start lightdm or just sudo lightdm, it will switch to tty7 and the screen flashes. Then nothing happened. Return to tty1 and I can see lightdm running, process xxxx. But the process does not exist. It was just crashed immediately I think. (That's why the screen flashes.) However, when I type startx, I can get into the desktop! That's amazing for me. I am not very clear about the relationship between X Server and Display Manager, but I think lightdm is running when I see the desktop! Then, what's wrong with sudo start lightdm? I use this command every time I power on my laptop since I have a text parameter added in grub.cfg. It never "crashed immediately". I need to use sudo start lightdm because it gets me into "Xubuntu Session" instead of "Xfce Session", the prior is more beautiful... Could anyone help?

• Youtube video streaming slow

  When I try to stream youtube videos on my ubuntu 11.04, they don't stream smoothly. They buffer well and are choppy. • Kaspersky AV is slowing down my connection significantly

  Hi, I'm using Kaspersky AV 2010, and I've noticed recently in Firefox (DownThemAll download manager) that my download speed has been significantly reduced after installing Kaspersky (from 450 kb/s to 30 kb/s!!). I can solve the issue temporarily by pausing protection and then resuming it again. But it's getting frustrating since I have to do this every few hours. Also another issue I have with the AV (which could be related) is that it forces all network traffic to go through it! (Nod32 didnt do that). Any idea what could be causing this? Your help is much appreciated

Right now, this is done by removing the defected hard drive to my machine. I figured out that using a rescue disk running some version of Linux might ease the process.   Making the new Snow Leopard radmind image* for my lab involves manipulating over 50GB of applications, including passing them over the network. Each try takes four hours or more, and if it fails there's no apparent way to pick up again from partway through. Instead I have to delete all the data (a minutes-long operation) and start over. Furthermore, one successful upload just means now I get to test whether the image works; if it doesn't, I can look forward to repeating the upload as many times as I need to troubleshoot. How can I do this faster and/or smarter?

• OSX Parallels 5 - can't share internet connection when using host-only networking...

  I've just upgraded from Parallels 3 to Parallels 5, but am having a problem matching my previous configuration. I am a web developer so run a local web server on my mac. I used to allow access to this from the virtual machines in Parallels by using 'Host-Only Networking' and then in OSX enabling internet sharing from my wifi/ethernet to the virtual ethernet ports that Parallels created. The setup was based on: http://www.craigfrancis.co.uk/features/setup/parallels/ The new version of Parallels doesn't create any network adaptors that are available for internet sharing in OSX - just VNIC's which only show under an ifconfig... • SpeedTracer NETWORK_RESOURCE_RESPONSE vs NETWORK_RESOURCE_FINISH

  I'm using SpeedTracer with GoogleChrome to measure the load times of requested resources. The SpeedTracer site says: NETWORK_RESOURCE_RESPONSE "Indicates that the renderer has started receiving bits from the resource loader" NETWORK_RESOURCE_FINISH "Indictes a resource load is successful and complete." In my mind that means we would always see a network resource response (bytes are arriving) before we see a finish (all bytes received). This doesn't seem to be the case at all. Here is a sample: Request Timing @33519ms for 926ms Response Timing @34445ms for -847ms Total Timing @33519ms for 78ms I'm guessing response time isn't supposed to be negative. Can someone explain this or is this a bug? I'm using Chrome 10.0.612.3 dev with a SpeedTracer I downloaded today.

• PeopleSoft 8.52 iPad Certification

  One of the real gems in the PeopleTools 8.52 release is the certification of PeopleSoft applications running in the Safari Browser on an iPad.  It is nice that PeopleSoft is not constrained by technology like Adobe Flex/Flash, so announcements like this "Adobe drops plans for mobile Flash support" do not limit our mobile solution to custom mobile development. There are parts of PeopleSoft applications that operate better on iPads than others.  One of the best is Workcenters.  Workcenters were new to PeopleTools 8.51 and we are starting to see more and more adoption of them.  Workcenters are roll based landing pages that eliminate difficult navigation by providing access to most links, pages, and reports a user in a role needs.  One of the nicest I’ve seen is the Supply Manager Workspace.  Here are some links to screenshots of what a WorkCenter looks like on an iPad: Here's the standard PeopleSoft Login Page The Supply Manager Workspace looks great full screen on an iPad iPad has a great user interface to zoom, here's a screenshot of an upclose view of an analytic. • IBM laptop remove access-connections

  I installed IBM Access Connections on my IBM t61 laptop to manage my wireless connections but it simply will not connect to my network. I want to uninstall it and try the Intel software which is capable to performing the same task. However, when I go into "Control Panel" - "Add/Remove Programs" and try to "Remove" this package, it simply opens up a screen and closes it immediately. This happens too fast for me to see whether its an error. Has anyone encountered this issue ? The event logs do not show any error.

• CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me.   I recently purchased a desktop computer and it did not come with a wireless network card. I am currently using the Belkin Wireless G USB Adapter and it is a very sub par product. It has very slow response times and download speeds with just basic browsing and downloads podcasts through iTunes. Does anyone have a better suggestion for a wireless adapter?   basically i want to ask question about configurable addressing scheme for LAN interface hardware. i have read about it from a book, some main points are given by a configurable addressing scheme provides a mechanism that a customer can use to set a physical address.The mechanism can be manual (the switches that must be set when the interface is first installed).or an electronic memory such as an EPROM that can be downloded from the computer(what does this means). Most hardware needs to be configured only once- configuration is usually done when the hardware is first installed. Question:Suppose a network administrator configures the LAN interface hardware (assigns the address) when he installs it. Now later on if he needs to change the physical address of the device can he change it? Or in this addressing scheme the hardware can only be configured once and we can not reconfigure it later on.

• How to create a password-less service account in AD?

  Is it possible to create domain accounts that can only be accessed via a domain administrator or similar access? The goal is to create domain users that have certain network access based on their task but these users are only meant for automated jobs. As such, they don't need passwords and a domain admin can always do a run-as to drop down to the correct user to run the job. No password means no chance of someone guessing it or it being written down or lost. This may belong on SuperUser ServerFault but I am going to try here first since it's on the fuzzy border to me. I am also open to constructive alternatives.

• Can connect to shared folder on Windows Server 2012, but access denied when accessing

  I have a Windows Server 2012 (non-domain) with a folder that's shared out as TestShare. The share permissions are Everyone has full access, and there is a local user TestUser that has full access to the actual folder. On GuestServer I can connect and/or map a drive to \HostServer\TestShare, specifying the username and password for TestUser. NTFS permissions: Share permissions Effective Access Report The problem is that when I try to access the folder, I get an "access denied" message. On the host server I can see the user connected to the share in the Sessions manager, so the password is correct and being recognised. If I use an incorrect password I don't get the "completed successfully" message, nor the 'open session'. What else can be blocking access to the shared files, when the share seems to be set, and the folder permissions seem to be set, and the connection seems to be okay? The network is recognised as "public", and the relevant firewall rules seem to be enabled - even disabling the firewall doesn't help.

So far I got Secure workspace - so nothing gets stolen and people cant come up to us asking for support (they need a ticket from the helpdesk) Quite area - so that we can work and not be disturbed by the loud project managers who play soccer in the office sometimes. A large table or desk where we can setup and or config systems and servers if needed. What else do we need? Thanks in advance.

• How do I configure tinydns (with fefe's IPv6 patch) to listen on IPv6 address?

  I'm setting up my network to support IPv6. I have static IPv6 addresses assigned to each interface of my router, and radvd advertising different prefixes on each interface. The next step would be to get my dnscache (from djbdns) working on IPv6. Said dnscache has fefe's IPv6 patch applied, so I assume it should work with IPv6. However, I can't find any documentation online on how to make the patched dnscache listen on IPv6. How do I configure tinydns and dnscache to listen on IPv6 too?

• Lync using SQL 2008 R2 SP1 - Publish Topology error

  Error that shows in the web page opened by the Topology builder: Error: An error occurred: "Microsoft.Rtc.Common.Data.SqlConnectionException" "A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)" Looking in the log file: ( I assume this is the acutal error making it STOP) Installed SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility version is 8.05.1054 Error: SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatibility is not installed or its version is not high enough. SQL Server 2005 Backward Compatability SP2 or higher must be installed. I have installed SQLServer2005_BC_x64.msi from MS, and cant seem to find this SP2 version. SQL server is a 2008 R2 SP1. I have also tested with a 2008 SP3 SQL server same error. Named pippes output via ( OSQL /L) SQL-2008-1 SQL2
