• Re-using aggregate level formulas in SQL - any good tactics?

  Imagine this case, but with a lot more component buckets and a lot more intermediates and outputs. This results in code duplication. I have thought of using UDFs (either scalar or table valued with an OUTER APPLY, since many of the final results may share intermediates which have to be calculated at the aggregate level), but in my experience the scalar and multi-statement table-valued UDFs perform very poorly. Also thought about using more dynamic SQL and applying the formulas by name, basically. Any other tricks, techniques or tactics to keeping these kinds of formulae which need to be applied at different levels in sync and/or organized?

• Custom Sorting on Custom Field in Django

  In my app, I have defined a custom field to represent a physical quantity using the quantities package. class AmountField(models.CharField): def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs): ... def to_python(self, value): create_quantities_value(value) Essentially the way it works is it extends CharField to store the value as a string in the database "12 min" and represents it as a quantities object when using the field in a model array(12) * min Then in a model it is used as such: class MyModel(models.Model): group = models.CharField() amount = AmountField() class Meta: ordering = ['group', 'amount'] My issue is that these fields do not seem to sort by the quantity, but instead by the string. So if I have some objects that contain something like {"group":"A", "amount":"12 min"} {"group":"A", "amount":"20 min"} {"group":"A", "amount":"2 min"} {"group":"B", "amount":"20 min"} {"group":"B", "amount":"1 hr"} they end up sorted something like this: >>> MyModel.objects.all() [{A, 12 min}, {A, 2 min}, {A, 20 min}, {B, 1 hr}, {B, 20 min}] essentially alphabetical order. Can I give my custom AmountField a comparison function so that it will compare by the python value instead of the DB value?

• Adding database results to array

  Hi all, I am having a mental blank here and cannot for the life of me figure out a solution. My scenario is that I am programming in PHP and MySQL. I have a database table returning the results for a specific orderid. The query can return a maximum of 4 rows per order and a minimum of 1 row. Here is an image of how I want to return the results. I have all the orderdetails (Name, address) ect stored in a table named "orders". I have all the packages for that order stored in a table named "packages". What I need to do is using a loop I need to have access to each specific element of the database results (IE package1, itemstype1, package2, itemtype2) ect I am using a query like this to try and get hold of just the "number of items: $sql = "SELECT * FROM bookings_onetime_packages WHERE orderid = '".$orderid."' ORDER BY packageid DESC"; $total = $db-database_num_rows($db-database_query($sql)); $query = $db-database_query($sql); $noitems = ''; while($info = $db-database_fetch_assoc($query)){ $numberitems = $info['numberofitems']; for($i=0; $i $noitems .= $numberitems[$i]; } } print $noitems; I need to have access to each specific element because I them need to create fill out a pdf template using "fpdf". I hope this makes sense. Any direction would be greatly appreciated.

• adding one time options to items

  Hello, I'm building an Event Registration site. For any given event, we'll have a handful of items to choose from. I have a table for these items. For each event we might have special options for users. For example, for one of the events new users get to buy an item which is not available to other users. This may not apply to all the events. For other events we might have some other restriction on items. I will obviously be checking this programmatically on application side. I would like to though, set up a column containing flag in the items table. But I don't find it feasible because this condition may only apply to one particular event. I don't want all the future items to have this column. What is a good approach to take in such a situation? Should I create a special "restrictions" table and just do a join? How would I handle this on the application side?

• Reading Data from DDFS ValueError: No JSON object could be decoded

  I'm running dozens of map reduce jobs for a number of different purposes using disco. My data has grown enormous and I thought I would try using DDFS for a change rather than standard txt files. I've followed the DISCO map/reduce example Counting Words as a map/reduce job, without to much difficulty and with the help of others, Reading JSON specific data into DISCO I've gotten past one of my latest problems. I'm trying to read data in/out of ddfs to better chunk and distribute it but am having a bit of trouble. • Inserting "null" (literally) in to a stored procedure parameter.

  I'm trying to insert the word "Null" (literally) in to a parameter for a stored procedure. For some reason SqlServer seems to think I mean NULL and not "Null". If I do a check for IF @LastName IS NULL // Test: Do stuff Then it bypasses that because the parameter isn't null. But when I do: INSERT INTO Person (<params>) VALUES (<stuff here>, @LastName, <more stuff here>); // LastName is 'Null' It bombs out saying that LastName doesn't accept nulls. I would seriously hate to have this last name, but someone does... and it's bombing the application. We're using SubSonic 2.0 (yeah, it's fairly old but upgrading is painful) as our DAL and stepping through it, I see it does create the parameters properly (for what I can tell). I've tried creating a temp table to see if I could replicate it manually but it seems to work just fine. Here is the example I create: DECLARE @myval VARCHAR(50) SET @myval = 'Null' CREATE TABLE #mytable( name VARCHAR(50)) INSERT INTO #mytable VALUES (@myval) SELECT * FROM #mytable DROP table #mytable Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

  I found this kind of interesting problem in MySQL InnoDB engine, could anyone explain why the engine always claim it's a deadlock. However, in thread1, if I input the following update query: mysql> update SeqNum set `current_seq_num` = 8; ERROR 1213 (40001): Deadlock found when trying to get lock; try restarting transaction Now, thread2 get the select query finished because thread1 quits.   I just started playing with Django today and so far am finding it rather difficult to do simple things. What I'm struggling with right now is filtering a list of status types. The StatusTypes model is: class StatusTypes(models.Model): status = models.CharField(max_length=50) type = models.IntegerField() def __unicode__(self): return self.status class Meta: db_table = u'status_types' In one admin page I need all the results where type = 0 and in another I'll need all the results where type = 1 so I can't just limit it from within the model. I need to pass in the name of the calling class to get the association right.   Hi, I have a table in which I want a dynamic image to load in at the left-hand side. The table needs to use an IF statement to select the appropriate image from the "Resources" folder, and needs to be based upon [dog types]. The [dog types] is extracted from an RSS feed, and so the image in the table cell needs to match the each cell's [dog types] tag. Update: See code below for what I'm looking to do (only below it's for earthquakes, for me its pictures of dogs). • user inheritance in django

  Hi guys, I saw a couple of ways extending user information of users and decided to adopt the model inheritance method. for instance, I have : class Parent(User): contact_means = models.IntegerField() is_staff = False objects = userManager() Now it is done, I've downloaded django_registration to help me out with sending emails to new users. The thing is, instead of using registration forms to register new user, I want to to invoke the email sending/acitvation capability of django_registration. So my workflow is: 1. add new Parent object in admin page. 2. send email My problem is, the django-registration creates a new registration profile together with a new user in the user table. how do I tweak this such that I am able to add the user entry into the custom user table. I have tried to create a modelAdmin and alter the save_model method to launch the create_inactive_user from django_registration, however I do not how to save the user object generated from django_registration into my Parent table when I have using model inheritance and I do not have a Foreign key attribute in my parent model.

• Transaction Isolation Level of Serializable not working for me

  I have a website which is used by all branches of a store and what it does is that it records customer purchases into a table called myTransactions.myTransactions table has a column named SerialNumber.For each purchase i create a record in the transactions table and assign a serial to it.The stored procedure that does this calls a UDF function to get a new serialNumber before inserting the record.Like below : Create Procedure mytransaction_Insert as begin insert into myTransactions(column1,column2,column3,...SerialNumber) values( Value1 ,Value2,Value3,...., getTransactionNSerialNumber()) end Create function getTransactionNSerialNumber as begin RETURN isnull(SELECT TOP (1) SerialNumber FROM myTransactions READUNCOMMITTED ORDER BY SerialNumber DESC),0) + 1 end The website is being used by so many users in different stores at the same time and it is creating many duplicate serialNumbers(same SerialNumbers).So i added a Sql transaction with ReadCommitted level to the transaction and i still got duplicate transaction numbers.I changed it to SERIALIZABLE in order to lock the resources and i not only got duplicate transaction numbers(!!HOW!!) but i also got sporadic deadlocks between the same stored procedure calls.This is what i tried : (With ommissions of try catch blocks and rollbacks) Create Procedure mytransaction_Insert as begin SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE BEGIN TRASNACTION ins insert into myTransactions(column1,column2,column3,...SerialNumber) values( Value1 ,Value2 , Value3, ...., getTransactionNSerialNumber()) COMMIT TRANSACTION ins SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION READCOMMITTED end I even copied the function that gets the serial number directly into the stored procedure instead of the UDF function call and still got duplicate serialNumbers.So,How can a stored procedure line create something Like the c# lock() {} block. By the way,i have to implement the transaction serial number using the same pattern and i can't change the serialNumber to any other identity field or whatever.And for some reasons i need to generate the serialNumber inside the databse and i can't move SerialNumber generation to application level. • Sharepoint BDC Error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value

  I am just starting to create our Business Data Catalog(s) for our practice management system and I am running into an issue w/ our staff table. Background: I am using Business Data Catalog Definition Editor to create my ADF. I am using the RevertToSelf Authentication Mode. I have tried a few other tables and they seem to work just fine thus far.. only issue is w/ the staff table. If I removed all the columns for the staff entity except the ID and a few columns for the name it actually works. So it has a problem w/ one of my columns in tblStaff. I receive this error even when I set up an ADF w/ just this one entity. So w/ no associations.. When attempting to view the record: http://servername/ssp/admin/Content/tblstaff.aspx?StaffID={0} w/ {0} replaced w/ an actual staff ID I get the following error: The title property of entity tblStaff is set to an invalid value. Things I have tried: I noticed that I do have a column in my staff table called "Title" and removed it from ADF w/ no luck... Same error.. I tried to use bdc meta man to create my ADF and I got the same error... Any ideas? Chris

  I'm totally newbie to jquery and ajax, my recently project is to help the representatives (reps) to manage customer quotations online. I have a page which displays all the quotations in a big table. I've managed to use ajax to fetch and display the quotations which associate to a particular rep after i click that rep's name. But the only problem is the speed of response. The first few clicks are ok and very smooth. But after several tries, the response become slow and I cant even scroll down the webpage, and later on the web browser craches.... • iPhone: value of selectedIndex for tab should be consistent, but isn't

  This should be so simple... but something screwy is happening. My setup looks like this: MainViewController Tab Bar Controller 4 tabs, each of which loads WebViewController My AppDelegate contains an ivar, tabBarController, which is connected to the tab bar controller (this was all set up in Interface Builder). The leftmost tab is marked "selected" in IB. Within the viewWillAppear method in WebViewController, I need to know which tab was just selected so I can load the correct URL. I do this by switching on appDelegate.tabBarController.selectedIndex. When the app first runs and the leftmost tab is selected, selectedIndex is a large garbage value. After that, I get values from 0 to 3, which is as it should be, but they are in random order. Not only that, but each tab I touch reports a different value each time. This app is extremely simple right now and I can't imagine what I could have done to make things go this wrong. Has anyone seen (and hopefully solved) this behavior? Update: we have a request for code. There's not much to see. The tab bar controller gets loaded in applicationDidFinishLaunching: [self.mainViewController view]; //force nib to load [self.window addSubview:self.mainViewController.tabBarController.view] There is currently no code whatsoever in MainViewController.m other than the synthesize and release for tabBarController. • Hide button on first of two UIViews, but have it visible on second...

  So I have a UIViewController (main application controller is a TabBarController). On this there is a UINavigationBar, and a UIBarButtonItem. I'm PRETTY sure I hooked up everything correctly in the Interface Builder and that the outlet in the code is connected to the button in the .xib. It should be because the method works correctly. Now I have another button on this view that brings up a second view, a UIWebView. I want this UIBarButtonItem, labeled "Back", to make the UIWebView dissapear, and bring back the first UIView, which it DOES DO correctly. However, when you are on the first UIView, there is no need to see the UIBarButtonItem, so how can I hide it but then bring it up for the UIWebView. By the way, both views use the same UINavigationBar, the UIWebView is brought up inside the tab bar and the nav bar. • How do you determine with CLLocationManager when a user denies access to location services?

  With CLLocationManager I can use the following code to determine if I can access location services on the device. This is the master setting for all apps and can be turned on and off. if (self.locationManager.locationServicesEnabled) { [self.locationManager startUpdatingLocation]; } But a user can deny access to an individual app and in order to not execute the code to use the location manager I need to know if the user approved access to location services for this specific app. I saw that at one point there was a property called locationServicesApproved which appears it would indicate if the user approved access to location services in this app. But it was removed in 2008. Is this feature in the SDK elsewhere? What can I do to determine if the user has approved access to location services for the current app?
