  • Dealing with AVCHD. Any free software to extract or edit AVCHD video?

    I have a Panasonic HDC-SD5 video carmera which records in HD format to a memory card. It also came with a DVD burner which burns this format to DVD which I need a blu-ray player to view. I can get about 30 min worth of video on 1 DVD. My problem is the software that comes with the camera is not very good at all so I am constantly just using the 'backup' feature in the included burner (connect drive to camera, push backup, and it spits out up to 4 DVDs worth of HD video). Now that I have the video backed up on DVD in the HD format (blu-ray), is there any free software that I can use to edit this video and create other HD DVD's with my own menus, transitions, etc? I was considering buying Pinnacle Studio but I wanted to exaust any free options before biting the bullet. Any suggestions for software I could use or anything else I could do to make dealing with this AVCHD format any easier that I am unaware of? Edit: Sorry forgot to include that I am running Windows Vista 64-bit. Edit: Still haven't found anything that is truely free. Everything has limitations by either time, watermark the video or degrade the quality. Edit: So I still haven't found really anything, so is there some software I can use to convert the video to another format that I then could use to edit the video?

    Hey guys, I was wondering how to make an hybrid usb stick. That means a usb stick that runs under mac and windows and displays specific content. Example: Plug in on win : index.html opens. Mac os X files are invisible. Plug in on mac: indexMac.html opens. Win files are invisible. I know that every usb stick can be read by both platforms.   • ubuntu not detecting CDdrives

    Ihave insatlled ubuntu 10.4 on my compuer with 6 cd drives. Now initiallyi had window server 2008 and i had to install marvel raid sata controller and then my window detected all 6 drives. Now ubuntu is detecting only 3 drives and i have not found marvell drivers for ubuntu bt i have drives for window 2008. I know Mac OS X is 64 bit Linux. This is not what I'm asking about. It would be lovely if you could recommend a small install, or one that has a live cd version.   • Cannot select fields with the mouse Windows 7

    Lately I cannot select a word (field) with the mouse. When I left click on a field drag the mouse to the end of the field then release the button, the selection (blue shading) disappears. Sometimes after several tries the shading stays and I can delete the field. Up to a week ago everything worked fine. Is this a bug, virus? I am using Windows 7 Also, in Live Mail after I finished reading an item in the Inbox, I click the X in the upper right corner to return to the rest of my mail, but instead it takes me back to the desktop and have to double click the Live Mail again to continue. Again this only happened recently. Things worked OK before and this does not happen regularly.

  • Pandoc: Output two sumation signs in equal height in Word 2010

    I need to output some complex equations in Word 2010 (docx). To do so I write most of the equations in tex and use pandoc to translate them as Word formulas. However I have a problem with the following tex equation: \sum_{m=1}^\infty\sum_{n=1}^\infty In Word the resulting two summation signs are not of the same size but the latter is smaler than the first one. Is there any workaround to solve this? I would deeply appreciate any help. Thank you Andy

    Microsoft do not sell Windows 8's DVD in China, We can only update to Windows 8 from Windows 7 , Vista or Windows XP SP3. However, I am a Ubuntu user, I don't have Windows 7 , Vista or Windows XP SP3 installed in my laptop. I was planning to buy a DVD of Windows 8 Pro from Amazon.com, but I don't know if it can be activated in China. Does anybody know? The customer service of Microsoft is too busy right now.

    I welcome better key-wording here, both on tags and title. I'm trying to conceive a free, open and secure network environment that would work anywhere, from big enterprises to small home networks of just 1 machine. I think since wireless Access Points are the most, if not only, true weak point of a Local Area Network (let's not consider every other security aspect of having internet) there would be basically two points to consider here: Having an open AP for anyone to use the internet through Leaving the whole LAN also open for guests to be able to easily read (only) files on it, and even a place to drop files on Considering these two aspects, once everything is done properly... What's the most secure option between having that, or having just an encrypted password-protected wifi? Of course "both" would seem "more secure". But it shouldn't actually be anything substantial. I've always had the feeling using any kind of the so called "wireless security" methods is actually a bad design. I'm talking mostly about encrypting and pass-phrasing (which are actually two different concepts), since I won't even consider hiding SSID and mac filtering. I understand it's a natural way of thinking. With cable networking nobody can access the network unless they have access to the physical cable, so you're "secure" in the physical way. In a way, encrypting is for wireless what building walls is for the cables. And giving pass-phrases would be adding a door with a key. So, what do you think?

  • User-friendly program to create editable & searchable pdf files, like tax & application forms and su

    Hello. Can somebody recommend user-friendly program that will create ( or convert from Excel & Word, or OpenOffice) editable pdf forms. You know like tax forms, that some of us filled out. Where you can create a form with predefined format and stationary, but let user edit/fill out fields. I need something user-friendly that a regular person can use. I'm NOT looking for a pdf library ( I already use wkhtmltopdf for generating pdfs programmaticaly). The reason is that we have about 400 documents ( internal expense forms, traing forms, etc) in .doc and .xls format that we want to convert to editable pdf ( so that people don't have to fill them out by hand). Coding 400 templates and then converting them using some lib or command line tool - is not my idea of fun, espsecially since those form change all the time. I'd like to just give HR and Quality department the tool, so that they can maintain those documents.   • Laptop won't boot with both memory slots used

    I'm currently trying to upgrade my old Sony Vaio VGN-SZ1HP/B to 2GB of RAM. It already had 1GB of Crucial RAM in one of its slots, and one empty. I checked on Crucial.com and it confirms that each bank can hold 1GB of PC2-5300. The 1GB stick already installed was this, but Crucial's page recommended this... The two are identical from what I can make out, so I just ordered another one of the former. Unfortunately the machine refuses to even POST with both sticks installed. If I remove the old RAM from Slot 1 and replace it with the new RAM it runs fine. If I leave Slot 1 empty and put RAM (either stick) in Slot 2, it won't POST. Basically it seems that Slot 2 just isn't working properly. Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this problem? Or maybe have any experience with this sort of thing with Sony Vaios? Thanks for any help!

    I've used primarily FF's built-in session management until recently. Now my needs have become more sophisticated. What I want is to be able to have two windows, one with a fixed set of tabs (approximately 5) and the other with "automatic save". That is, when I start FF, I want 1 window to open with my 5 tabs, and another to open with whatever I had when I shut down FF. I've installed "Session Manager", but I can't seem to get it to do what I want. It will save one window, but when I close one window, it removes that one from the session. Any suggestions to do this with either Session Manager or another plugin would be great.

  • Why do I often have to refresh pages I navigate to once for them (or content in them) to load?

    I have noticed a bizarre pattern when using my PC, that when I open a link to a website, it often will often take a very long time to load, or time out. Sometimes content on the website will be drawn, but again, it seems to get "stuck" for an unusual amount of time before finishing. Most affected is Youtube; almost every time I navigate to a youtube video from another website such as Google, the video will not begin playing, but will instead just display the player controls with a black screen where the video should be and the buffering symbol, usually before displaying an error such as "The video failed to load". The unusual part of this problem is that whenever this happens, refreshing the page always causes it to load almost immediately the second time around, without any problems. Note that I'm not talking about how some browsers will dump whatever has been cached to the "pallet" briefly when the page is refreshed or loading stopped; but that the second time loading the website being faster. I have done my best to rule out some of the obvious causes: My Windows 7 desktop computer is the only device that seems to be affected. I use Firefox on it (latest version, flash updated, etc). My connection has more than enough bandwidth (30 megabits down, 4 up), and I've even tried QoSing all other devices to make sure this isn't happening due to usage spikes. Wireshark is not showing any clearly unusual network activity (i.e frequently dropped packets).

  • Force Finder to log in as Guest to a SMB share

    I have a QNAP NAS that offers a few SMB shares. As I'm in a trusted environment, my shares are accessible as guest rather than with a combination of username and password. Problem Now, when I click the name of the device in Finder's sidebar, I get the black "Connection failed" bar, with the option "Connect as...". When I click that, I receive: I can however press ? + K and enter the server's name manually, which gets me to this window: Here, I have to select "guest". Now, I can select one of the shares to connect to, and I'm finally connected to the server. If I select it in the sidebar, I get a list of all shares available, because I'm connected as "guest", obviously: What I need Well, as soon as I unmount all shares, I have to go through the same procedure of manually logging in as "guest" again, which I find quite annoying. Is there any way I could get Finder (or the underlying SMB client) to know which credentials to use? Or should I look for the solution rather on the server side? (I know that other SMB shares seem to work fine in my network) Diagnostics The only thing I can get out of Console.app is: 5/15/11 7:36:40 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder[200] SharePointBrowser::handleOpenCallBack returned 64 This message occurs when I click the name of the SMB server in the Finder sidebar.   • Chrome's new window disappear from desktop

    I'm having this problem with Chrome on a Windows 7 x86 machine. I'm using Chrome for a locally hosted intranet web app. In the web app, there's frequent use of new window which popup, which works like a dialog box for the app. The problem started since yesterday. All the new windows doesn't appear on top and no where to be found on the desktop. But it does appear on the taskbar. Clicking the button on the taskbar doesn't bring up the window as well. I've also tried Alt+Space, then Move, it doesn't work. I only found 2 way to bring it up, Maximize or Show as tab. What could have caused this and how should I fix it? Thanks EDIT: I've configure to not group taskbar buttons. EDIT: I've just gone through the javascript of the button, it call window.open to display the popup. I can see the popup flicker and disappear. If I step through the code, the popup will display properly, sometime. Also, if I click the button twice, it will also display the popup, but at a much smaller size, less than 100x100
