  • Showing Live Wallpaper in a 1.6 target app by detecting if it's a 2.1 device?

    - by itamarw
We're building an Android app with target SDK 1.6, so it will run on 1.6 devices and higher. We'd like to support Live Wallpapers, which we know is 2.1+ only. Is there a way to build one app with 1.6 SDK as the target, but detect if the device it's running on is 2.1, and only in that scenario call the live wallpaper API. We're trying to avoid having to build a separate 1.6 and 2.1 versions, and would like to be able to support Live Wallpapers for only 2.1 devices. So to be clear- 1 app, that can support 1.6 and higher, and support live wallpapers for 2.1 devices. Any way of doing this?

  • LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

    - by derek
In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

  • NSManagedObject - NSSet gets removed ??

    - by aryaxt
I have an nsmanagedObject this NSManagedObject contains an NSSet. the data for NSSet get's lost when i call release on an NSManagedObject with retain count of 2. Wouldn't retaining an NSManagedObject also retain all it's properties?? - (id)initViewWithManagedObject :(NSManagedObject)obj { if (self = [super init]) { self.managedObject = obj; } } - (void)dealloc { [self.managedObject release]; //Here is when the nsset data gets removed [super dealloc]; } Below describes how the property was created @interface MyManagedObject :NSManagedObject @property (nonatomic, retain) NSSet *mySet; @end @implementation MyManagedObject @dynamic mySet; @end

  • Linq To Sql: Compiled Queries and Extension Methods

    - by Beni
Hi community, I'm interessted, how does Linq2Sql handles a compiled query, that returns IQueryable. If I call an extension method based on a compiled query like "GetEntitiesCompiled().Count()" or "GetEntitiesCompiled().Take(x)". What does Linq2Sql do in the background? This would be very bad, so in this situation I should write a compiled query like "CountEntitiesCompiled". Does he load the result (in this case "GetEntitiesCompiled()") into the memory (mapped to the entity class like "ToList()")? So what situations make sense, when the compiled queries return IQueryable, that query is not able to modify, before request to the Sql-Server. So in my opinion I can just as good return List. Thanks for answers!

  • Allow swipe-to-delete in one instance of UITableViewDataSource, but not another

    - by synic
I've got a UITableViewDataSource that I'm using for two different UITableViews. In one of the table views, I want to enable swipe-to-delete, so I've implemented tableView:commitEditingStyle:forRowAtIndexPath, and it works as expected. However, in another table, I want to disable that feature. I've got it working by making two UITableViewDataSource classes, one subclassing the other, and I only implement tableView:commitEditingStyle:forRowAtIndexPath in the subclass. I call them RecipientModel and RecipientModelEditable. I'm wondering if there's a better way.

  • Abort a slow flush to disk after write?

    - by Therealstubot
Is there a way to abort a python write operation in such a way that the OS doesn't feel it's necessary to flush the unwritten data to the disc? I'm writing data to a USB device, typically many megabytes. I'm using 4096 bytes as my block size on the write, but it appears that Linux caches up a bunch of data early on, and write it out to the USB device slowly. If at some point during the write, my user decides to cancel, I want the app to just stop writing immediately. I can see that there's a delay between when the data stops flowing from the application, and the USB activity light stops blinking. Several seconds, up to about 10 seconds typically. I find that the app is holding in the close() method, I'm assuming, waiting for the OS to finish writing the buffered data. I call flush() after every write, but that doesn't appear to have any impact on the delay. I've scoured the python docs for an answer but have found nothing.

  • XDocument holding onto Memory?

    - by Jon
I have an appplication that does a XDocument.Load from a 20mb file and then gets passed to a form to view its contents: openFileDialog1.FileName = ""; if (openFileDialog1.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK) { AuditFile = XDocument.Load(openFileDialog1.FileName); fmAuditLogViewer AuditViewer = new fmAuditLogViewer(); AuditViewer.ReportDocument = AuditFile; AuditViewer.Init(); AuditViewer.ShowDialog(); AuditViewer.Dispose(); AuditFile.RemoveNodes(); AuditFile = null; } In Task Manager I can see the memory being used by my application shoot up when I open this file. When I have finished viewing this file in my application I call : myXDocument.RemoveNodes(); myXDocument = null; However the memory use in Task Manager is still pretty high against my app. Is the XDocument still being held in memory and can I decrease the memory usage by my app?

  • Replacement background image not showing when using GreaseMonkey

    - by Dave C
I'm trying to use GreaseMonkey to replace the background image of a DIV on bing.com. It's a pretty straightforward call to GM_addstyle: GM_addStyle(".sw_logo " +"{background:url('http://www.kpao.org/blog/kpao-bing-logo-inverse.png') " +"no-repeat 21px 7px transparent}"); However, the image doesn't show up. It's clearly visible in Firebug, and as I twiddle with the CSS in Firebug, I can get it to show up. But it doesn't stay. Any thoughts on why? Maybe it's a bug, but then maybe I'm missing something obvious. Thanks!

  • How to properly update a feature branch from trunk?

    - by Pavel Radzivilovsky
SVN book says: ...Another way of thinking about this pattern is that your weekly sync of trunk to branch is analogous to running svn update in a working copy, while the final merge step is analogous to running svn commit from a working copy I find this approach very unpractical in large developments, for several reasons, mostly related to reintegration step. From SVN v1.5, merging is done rev-by-rev. Cherry-picking the areas to be merged would cause us to resolve the trunk-branch conflicts twice (one when merging trunk revisions to the FB, and once more when merging back). Repository size: trunk changes might be significant for a large code base, and copying the differences files (unlike SVN copy) from trunk elsewhere may be a significant overhead. Instead, we do what we call "re-branching". In this case, when a significant chunk of trunk changes is needed, a new feature branch is opened from current trunk, and the merge is always downward (Feature branches - trunk - stable branches). This does not go along SVN book guidelines and developers see it as extra pain. How do you handle this situation?

  • python, wrapping class returning the average of the wrapped members

    - by João Portela
The title isn't very clear but I'll try to explain. Having this class: class Wrapped(object): def method_a(self): # do some operations return n def method_b(self): # also do some operations return n I wan't to have a class that performs the same way as this one: class Wrapper(object): def __init__(self): self.ws = [Wrapped(1),Wrapped(2),Wrapped(3)] def method_a(self): results=[Wrapped.method_a(w) for w in self.ws] sum_ = sum(results,0.0) average = sum_/len(self.ws) return average def method_b(self): results=[Wrapped.method_b(w) for w in self.ws] sum_ = sum(results,0.0) average = sum_/len(self.ws) return average obviously this is not the actual problem at hand (it is not only two methods), and this code is also incomplete (only included the minimum to explain the problem). So, what i am looking for is a way to obtain this behavior. Meaning, whichever method is called in the wrapper class, call that method for all the Wrapped class objects and return the average of their results. Can it be done? how? Thanks in advance. ps-didn't know which tags to include...

  • DataContext Refresh and PropertyChanging & PropertyChanged Events

    - by Scott
I'm in a situation where I am being informed from an outside source that a particular entity has been altered outside my current datacontext. I'm able to find the entity and call refresh like so MyDataContext.Refresh(RefreshMode.OverwriteCurrentValues, myEntity); and the properties which have been altered on the entity are updated correctly. However neither of the INotifyPropertyChanging INotifyPropertyChanged appear to be raised when the refresh occurs and this leaves my UI displaying incorrect information. I'm aware that Refresh() fails to use the correct property getters and setters on the entity to raise the change notification events, but perhaps there is another way to accomplish the same thing? Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better method than Refresh? If Refresh is the only option, does anyone have a work around?

  • C# Memoization of functions with arbitrary number of arguments

    - by Lirik
    I'm trying to create a memoization interface for functions with arbitrary number of arguments, but I'm failing miserably. The first thing I tried is to define an interface for a function which gets memoized automatically upon execution: class EMAFunction:IFunction { Dictionary<List<object>, List<object>> map; class EMAComparer : IEqualityComparer<List<object>> { private int _multiplier = 97; public bool Equals(List<object> a, List<object> b) { List<object> aVals = (List<object>)a[0]; int aPeriod = (int)a[1]; List<object> bVals = (List<object>)b[0]; int bPeriod = (int)b[1]; return (aVals.Count == bVals.Count) && (aPeriod == bPeriod); } public int GetHashCode(List<object> obj) { // Don't compute hash code on null object. if (obj == null) { return 0; } // Get length. int length = obj.Count; List<object> vals = (List<object>) obj[0]; int period = (int) obj[1]; return (_multiplier * vals.GetHashCode() * period.GetHashCode()) + length;; } } public EMAFunction() { NumParams = 2; Name = "EMA"; map = new Dictionary<List<object>, List<object>>(new EMAComparer()); } #region IFunction Members public int NumParams { get; set; } public string Name { get; set; } public object Execute(List<object> parameters) { if (parameters.Count != NumParams) throw new ArgumentException("The num params doesn't match!"); if (!map.ContainsKey(parameters)) { //map.Add(parameters, List<double> values = new List<double>(); List<object> asObj = (List<object>)parameters[0]; foreach (object val in asObj) { values.Add((double)val); } int period = (int)parameters[1]; asObj.Clear(); List<double> ema = TechFunctions.ExponentialMovingAverage(values, period); foreach (double val in ema) { asObj.Add(val); } map.Add(parameters, asObj); } return map[parameters]; } public void ClearMap() { map.Clear(); } #endregion } Here are my tests of the function: private void MemoizeTest() { DataSet dataSet = DataLoader.LoadData(DataLoader.DataSource.FROM_WEB, 1024); List<String> labels = dataSet.DataLabels; Stopwatch sw = new Stopwatch(); IFunction emaFunc = new EMAFunction(); List<object> parameters = new List<object>(); int numRuns = 1000; long sumTicks = 0; parameters.Add(dataSet.GetValues("open")); parameters.Add(12); // First call for(int i = 0; i < numRuns; ++i) { emaFunc.ClearMap();// remove any memoization mappings sw.Start(); emaFunc.Execute(parameters); sw.Stop(); sumTicks += sw.ElapsedTicks; } Console.WriteLine("Average ticks not-memoized " + (sumTicks/numRuns)); sumTicks = 0; // Repeat call for (int i = 0; i < numRuns; ++i) { sw.Start(); emaFunc.Execute(parameters); sw.Stop(); sumTicks += sw.ElapsedTicks; } Console.WriteLine("Average ticks memoized " + (sumTicks/numRuns)); } The performance is confusing me... I expected the memoized function to be faster, but it didn't work out that way: Average ticks not-memoized 106,182 Average ticks memoized 198,854 I tried doubling the data instances to 2048, but the results were about the same: Average ticks not-memoized 232,579 Average ticks memoized 446,280 I did notice that it was correctly finding the parameters in the map and it going directly to the map, but the performance was still slow... I'm either open for troubleshooting help with this example, or if you have a better solution to the problem then please let me know what it is.

  • Listview with alternating resources in Android

    - by Fran
Hi! I have a ListView and an adapter that sets alternating background colors to the list items overwriting getView Method in my adapter. I want to go further and I would to set to each row a Resource background. I try in getView call the method setBackgroundResource: private int[] messages = new int[] {R.layout.message,R.layout.message2}; //... public View getView(int position, View convertView, ViewGroup parent) { View v = super.getView(position, convertView, parent); int MessagePos = position % messages.length; v.setBackgroundResource(messages[MessagePos]); return v;} But this not work, and I the message throws by exception is File res/layout/message.xml from drawable resource ID #0x7f030004 Any ideas? • If Possible, How Can One Set Either a Background Color on Cells within a Sizer or Gridlines for the

    - by MetaHyperBolic
I am flailing about with wxWidgets, in particular, the wx.Sizer in wxPython. I have read the documents, I have a copy of wXPython in Action before me, and have set aside the problem to work on other things a better mental model of sizers hopefully gestated within my skull. None of this has worked. I am not grokking, or even getting to the point where I can bang about usefully, how sizers work. In HTML, I could at least set a background color on some div or td, or call forth borders so I could see how things are laid out. Here, I have a grey expanse and no idea which of the nested static box sizers from which it originates. I am giving static box sizers after making a mess out of the grid bag sizers. Either alternative would let me at least get a handle on how these work.

  • How to get window opened/closed/minimized messages from a native app?

    - by Josh Santangelo
It's tough to write a good title for this one. I'm working on a WPF application which needs to know about the existence of all other open windows on the system. I'm able to do this by calling the native EnumWindows method just fine, and I can call other native methods to filter out just the windows I'm interested in. This works well. The problem I'm having is that I want to know when a window is opened or closed (and, ideally, minimized). I can do this by polling with EnumWindows, but I'm finding that to be pretty slow, even if I push it off to another thread. Is there a better way to get notifications of window opened/closed/minimized? Keep in mind that my knowledge of non-managed code is pretty limited.

  • PHP Menu Question

    - by Vecta
As one of the steps toward a greater website redesign I am putting the majority of the content of our website into html files to be used as includes. I am intending on passing a variable to the PHP template page through the URL to call the proper include. Our website has many programs that each need an index page as well as about 5 sub-pages. These program pages will need a menu system to navigate between the different pages.I am naming the pages pagex_1, pagex_2, pagex_3, etc. where "pagex" is descriptive of the page content. My question is, what would be the best way to handle this menu system? Is there a way to modify the initial variable used to arrive at the index page to create links in the menu to arrive at the other pages? Thanks for any help!

  • Lightweight jQuery ColorPicker bound to input and with popup selector

    - by Scott B
I've found two jQuery colorpickers that I'm considering using in my app. I have a simple input field that I'm asking users to supply a hex color to. I'd like to use jPicker's "Binded" example, however, the overall size of the jPicker is a bit more than I'd like to add to my app. So that sent me searching and I found a very nifty little compact picker called "Farbtastic", which does exactly what I want with one major exception: It appears to be an inline only solution (meaning, I can't call it in the same manner as jPicker's binded example. Can someone tell me how I might convert Farbtastic to mimic jPicker's binded example? More specifically, I'm looking to place a colorpicker widget (the small color frame icon as in the jPicker example) next to my input field so that it displays the currently selected color, and when clicked, it opens up the color palette widget.

  • How is it that the abstract class XmlWriter can be instantiated using XmlWriter.Create(... ?

    - by Cognize
Hi, Just looking to clarify my understanding of the workings of the XmlWriter and abstract classes in general. My thinking is (was) that an abstract class can not be instantiated, although it can contain base methods that can be used by an inheriting class. So, while investigating XmlWriter, I find that to instantiate the XmlWriter, you call XmlWriter.Create(.... , which returns an instance of... XmlWriter, which can then be used: FileStream fs = new FileStream("XML.xml", FileMode.Create); XmlWriter w = XmlWriter.Create(fs); XmlSerializer xmlSlr = new XmlSerializer(typeof(TestClass)); xmlSlr.Serialize(fs, tsIn); This clearly works, as tested. Can anyone help me understand what is going on here. As far as I can see there is or should be no 'instance' to work with here??

  • Silverlight error-handling conventions: There is no relationship between onSilverlightError and Repo

    - by rasx
When I see the call System.Windows.Browser.HtmlPage.Window.Eval (which is evil) in ReportErrorToDOM (in App.xaml.cs) this shows me that it has no relationship to onSilverlightError. So what kind of JavaScript-based scenario calls onSilverlightError? When will onSilverlightError definitely be needed? What are Silverlight error-handling conventions in general? This is a very important comment by Erik Monk but needs more detail: There are 2 kinds of terminal errors in Silverlight. 1) Managed errors (hit the managed Application_UnhandledException method). Note that some errors may not even get to this point. If the managed infrastructure can't be loaded for some reason (out of memory error maybe...), you won't get this kind of error. Still, if you can get it, you can use a web service (or the CLOG project) to communicate it back to the server. 2) Javascript errors.

  • C# app fails to load Matlab DLL when running from a shared drive?

    - by jg
I have a C# .NET 2.0 program that calls a Matlab .dll file that I created using Matlab Builder for .NET. This Matlab .dll file is a wrapper for a m file function that I need to call from my C# program. Everything works fine when I run this app from my local drive. However once I copy the app to a shared drive the Matlab dll fails when it's first loaded. I setup caspol to allow .NET programs to run from shared drives. Does anyone know what could cause this problem or a tool that I could use to easily figure out what the problem is? Thanks.

  • Concatenating rows from different tables into one field

    - by Markus
Hi! In a project using a MSSQL 2005 Database we are required to log all data manipulating actions in a logging table. One field in that table is supposed to contain the row before it was changed. We have a lot of tables so I was trying to write a stored procedure that would gather up all the fields in one row of a table that was given to it, concatenate them somehow and then write a new log entry with that information. I already tried using FOR XML PATH and it worked, but the client doesn't like the XML notation, they want a csv field. Here's what I had with FOR XML PATH: DECLARE @foo varchar(max); SET @foo = (SELECT * FROM table WHERE id = 5775 FOR XML PATH('')); The values for "table", "id" and the actual id (here: 5775) would later be passed in via the call to the stored procedure. Is there any way to do this without getting XML notation and without knowing in advance which fields are going to be returned by the SELECT statement?

  • What are the Hot and Cold observables?

    - by Sergey Aldoukhov
I watched the video and I know the general principles - hot happens even when nobody is subscribed, cold happens "on demand". Also, Publish() converts cold to hot and Defer() converts hot to cold. But still, I feel I am missing the details. Here are some questions I'd like to have answered: Can you give a comprehensive definition for these terms? Does it ever make sense to call Publish on hot observable or Defer on cold? Is there differences between hot and cold definitions for IObservable and IEnumerable? What are the general principles you should take into account when programming for cold or hot? Any other tips on hot/cold observables?
