  • Why Windows 7 isn't written in C#?

    I saw a similar question about the reason Google Chrome wasn't written in C#. But with the upcoming version of Windows and Microsoft's flagship language, I am having a hard time understanding why Microsoft isn't pushing C# to its fullest potential to give it more exposure via their market share? In addition can be interpreted as "Is C# and the .Net framework suitable to run a modern OS like Windows 7" Btw this is not a flaming question, but curiosity. I use C# daily and really love it.

  • Enable Proxy Authentication for normal windows application.

    my company's internet works on proxy server with Authentication(i.e. Browser prompts with window for username/password everytime i tried to access any web page). Now i have some windows application which tries to access internet(like WebPI/Visual Studio 2008 for rss feeds), but as they are unable to popup the the authentication window, they are unable to connect with internet with error: (407) Proxy Authentication Required . Here the exception is VS2008, first time it always fails to load rss feeds on startup page, but when i click on the link, it shows authentication window and everything works fine after that. my question is: How can i configure normal windows application(through app.config/app.manifest file) accessing web to able to show the authentication window or provide default credentials. For explore this furthor, i have created one console application on VS2008 which tries to serach something on google and display the result on console.     I want to include a hash and list inside a YAML file that I'm parsing with the following command: APP_CONFIG = YAML.load_file("#{RAILS_ROOT}/config/config.yml") My YAML file looks like this: feeds: [{:url => 'http://www.google.com', :label => 'default'}] But this doesn't seem to work.   • Which one is more popular?

    Which of IDE's I'm more likely to meet in an office? Borland or Visual Studio? I wouldn't ask this question here (I could use google and type which is better) only for a reason that in my previous cariere as an engineer I worked (and most of my friends) all the time on AutoCAD not on Microstation even though Microstation had always been better software (stability, conforming to standards, ease of use etc.).     (I'm also asking this on the OpenRasta google group) Hey all, I've been using OpenRasta to convert an old web application we have into something RESTful. IS it possible to serve up a resource (or specifically a list of resources) as both .aspx and JSON? I have tried this but no matter what I try I keep getting the .aspx back ... any ideas?   • Integrating OpenID into Symfony 1.4?

    I've tried integrating sfPHPOpenIdPlugin but that hit a dead-end since it's built for Symfony 1.2 and relies on deprecated PHP functionality; I also had a go with sfGoogleLoginPlugin which did authenticate correctly but lacks extended capability to retrieve user details (+ would restrict me to Google; obviously). I'm thinking the most viable solution is to link in one of the various PHP libraries available into my model. I'm wondering if anyone else has had any success/tips with such an integration and what libraries to consider?

  • Calling Perl and/or Python from Ruby

    Would it be possible to integrate Python (and/or Perl) and Ruby with some degree of transparency? I've looked at http://www.goto.info.waseda.ac.jp/~fukusima/ruby/python/doc/ and http://code.google.com/p/ruby-perl/ , but they both seem rather outdated. Perhaps this is not an appropriate approach, but would it be possible to generate a Ruby interface for Python's C API?

    Let's say there's a table created as follows: create table testTable ( colA int not null ) How would you drop the not null constraint? I'm looking for something along the lines of ALTER TABLE testTable ALTER COLUMN colA DROP NOT NULL; which is what it would look like if I used PostgreSQL. To my amazement, as far as I've been able to find, the MySQL docs, Google and yes, even Stackoverflow (in spite of dozens or hundreds of NULL-related questions) don't seem to lead towards a single simple SQL statement which will do the job.

    This question is along the same lines as What are some funny loading statements to keep my users amused, I want screenshots of all the coolest "error" pages site's throw up when something's broken. I know pandora.com talks about a panda ravaging it's way through the office, twitter's has the little birds floating around or something, sourceforge had one with some funny robots the other day. I'm sure I saw a blog once that had a bunch of them, but it's kinda hard to google "error pages". Community Wiki, of course :)

  • Using OpenID as the only authentication method

    I have read the other questions and they mostly talk about the security of doing so. That's not entirely my concern, mostly because the website is question is a browser-based game. However, the larger issue is the user - not every user is literate enough to understand OpenID. Sure RPX makes this pretty easy, which is what I'll use, but what if the user does not have an account at Google or Facebook or whatever, or does not trust the system to log in with an existing account? They'd have to get an account at another provide - I'm sure most will know how to do it, let alone be bothered to do it. There is also the problem of how to manage it in the application. A user might want to use multiple identities with a single account, so it's not as simple as username + password to deal with. How do I store the OpenID identities of a user in the database? Using OpenID gives me a benefit too: RPX can provide extensive profile information, so I can just prefill the profile form and ask the user to edit as required. (security concerns over say, logging in with their Google account for example) How do I store the identifier in the database? (I'm not sure if the tables above are right) What measures do I need to take in order to prevent someone from logging in as another user and happily doing anything with their account? (as I understand RPX sends the identifier via HTTP, so what anyone would have to do is to just somehow grab it then enter it in the "OpenID" field) What else do I need to be aware of when using OpenID?

  • Word 2007, Open XML - embedding an image

    Do you know what basic information MUST include a paragraph (w:p) in document.xml inside a *.docx document, that specifies an image? I do know there must be <a:blip r:embed="rId4" /> specifing the relation id, but what else? It's very hard to find it in google and experimenting with cutting out tags from a ready document or reading the specification takes a lot of time. An example with all the required tags would be greatly appreciated.

    As the title said: Is it possible to send an email (using php mail()) and after sending the email, auto redirect to another page. All the codes will be in single php file? Code-wise, should be something like this: if(mail(argument...)){ header("Location: www.google.com"); } I think I would get a: "Error: header information already sent" or something like. But what if I want to send email and then auto-redirect on that page?? Possible?
