• Webcast On-Demand: Building Java EE Apps That Scale

  With some awesome work by one of our architects, Randy Stafford, we recently completed a webcast on scaling Java EE apps efficiently. Did you miss it? No problem. Further, we had several interesting questions asked by our audience, and we thought we'd share a sampling of those here for you - just in case you had the same queries yourself. Enjoy! What is the largest Coherence deployment out there? We have seen deployments with over 500 JVMs in the Coherence cluster, and deployments with over 1000 JVMs using the Coherence jar file, in one system. On the management side there is an ecosystem of monitoring tools from Oracle and third parties with dashboards graphing values from Coherence's JMX instrumentation. For lifecycle management we have seen a lot of custom scripting over the years, but we've also integrated closely with WebLogic to leverage its management ecosystem for deploying Coherence-based applications and managing process life cycles. That integration introduces a new Java EE archive type, the Grid Archive or GAR, which embeds in an EAR and can be seen by a WAR in WebLogic. That integration also doesn't require any extra WebLogic licensing if Coherence is licensed. How is Coherence different from a NoSQL Database like MongoDB? Coherence can be considered a NoSQL technology. It pre-dates the NoSQL movement, having been first released in 2001 whereas the term "NoSQL" was coined in 2009. Coherence has a key-value data model primarily but can also be used for document data models. Coherence manages data in memory currently, though disk persistence is in a future release currently in beta testing. Where the data is managed yields a few differences from the most well-known NoSQL products: access latency is faster with Coherence, though well-known NoSQL databases can manage more data. Coherence also has features that well-known NoSQL database lack, such as grid computing, eventing, and data source integration. Finally Coherence has had 15 years of maturation and hardening from usage in mission-critical systems across a variety of industries, particularly financial services. Can I use Coherence for local caching? Yes, you get additional features beyond just a java.util.Map: you get expiration capabilities, size-limitation capabilities, eventing capabilites, etc. Are there APIs available for GoldenGate HotCache? It's mostly a black box. You configure it, and it just puts objects into your caches. However you can treat it as a glass box, and use Coherence event interceptors to enhance its behavior - and there are use cases for that. Are Coherence caches updated transactionally? Coherence provides several mechanisms for concurrency control. If a project insists on full-blown JTA / XA distributed transactions, Coherence caches can participate as resources. But nobody does that because it's a performance and scalability anti-pattern. At finer granularity, Coherence guarantees strict ordering of all operations (reads and writes) against a single cache key if the operations are done using Coherence's "EntryProcessor" feature. And Coherence has a unique feature called "partition-level transactions" which guarantees atomic writes of multiple cache entries (even in different caches) without requiring JTA / XA distributed transaction semantics.

• ubuntu 10.04: wlan0 No such device

  I am using a Dell xps l702x and I am using ubuntu 10.04 because I need to use f77 (don't ask) and I wasn't able to get it working on later versions of ubuntu. I cannot use the wifi at all. I have tried to fix it and have had limited success (changed the output from rfkill list all from Hard blocked: yes, to hard blocked: no). • Manually setting breakpoints in WinDBG

  I am trying to examine the assembly for an executable using WinDBG, but I am having a hard time getting to it. I want to set a breakpoint at the first instruction in my program, but when I try to do that manually (using the address of the module), WinDBG tells me that it is "unable to insert breakpoint" at that location due to an "Invalid access to memory location." I notice that when I create a breakpoint through the source code GUI, the address is not the same as the first part of my module (In my example: "Win32FileOpen", a simple program I wrote.) Is there a header of some sort that requires adding an offset to the address of my module? In another question, I saw the suggestion: "I would attempt to calculate the breakpoint address as: Module start + code start + code offset" but was unsure where to obtain those values. Can somebody please elaborate on this? The reason I don't just use the source GUI is that I want to be able to do this with a program that I may not have the source/symbols for. If there is an easier way to immediately start working with the executable I open, please let me know. The idea would be to map the existing binary file directly to memory for some preferably higher-speed operations. • ASP.Net: IHttpAsyncHandler and AsyncProcessorDelegate

  I have implemented an IHttpAsyncHandler. I am making about 5 different AJAX calls from a webpage that has widgets to that handler. One of those widgets takes about 15 seconds to load(because of a large database query) the others should all load in under a second. The handler is responding in a synchronous manner. I am getting very inconsistent results. The ProcessRequest method is using Session and other class level variables. Could that be causing different requests to use the same thread instead each there own? I'm getting this... Request1 --- response 1 sec Request2 --- response 14 sec Request3 --- response 14.5 sec Request4 --- response 15 sec Request5 --- response 15.5 sec but I'm looking for something more like this... Request1 --- response 1 sec Request2 --- response 14 sec Request3 --- response 1.5 sec Request4 --- response 2 sec Request5 --- response 1.5 sec Without posting too much code my implementation of the IHttpAsyncHandler methods are pretty standard. private AsyncProcessorDelegate _Delegate; protected delegate void AsyncProcessorDelegate(HttpContext context); IAsyncResult IHttpAsyncHandler.BeginProcessRequest(HttpContext context, AsyncCallback cb, object extraData) { _Delegate = new AsyncProcessorDelegate(ProcessRequest); return _Delegate.BeginInvoke(context, cb, extraData); } void IHttpAsyncHandler.EndProcessRequest(IAsyncResult result) { _Delegate.EndInvoke(result); } Putting a debug break point in my IHttpAsyncHandler.BeginProcessRequest method I can see that the method isn't being fired until the last Process is complete. Also my machine.config has this entry... processModel autoConfig="true" with no other properties set. What else do I need to check for?

  I am developing an iPhone application and I use HTML to display formatted text. I often display the same webpage, but with a different content. I would like to use a template HTML file, and then fill it with my diffent values. I wonder if ObjectiveC has a template system similar to ERB in Ruby. That would allow to do things like Template: <HTML> <HEAD> </HEAD> <BODY> <H1>{{{title}}}</H1> <P>{{{content}}}</P> </BODY> </HTML> ObjectiveC (or what it may be in an ideal world) Template* template = [[Template alloc] initWithFile:@"my_template.tpl"]; [template fillMarker:@"title" withContent:@"My Title"]; [template fillMarker:@"content" withContent:@"My text here"]; [template process]; NSString* result = [template result]; [template release]; And the result string would contain: <HTML> <HEAD> </HEAD> <BODY> <H1>My Title</H1> <P>My text here</P> </BODY> </HTML> The above example could be achieved with some text replacement, but that would be a pain to maintain.   In ASP.net web service if the above isn't specified , what is the response format by default? Also, if my web service below: [WebMethod()] public List<Sample> GenerateSamples(string[][] data) { ResultsFactory f = new ResultsFactory(data); List<Sample> samples = f.GenerateSamples(); return samples; } returns the list of objects, If I change the response format to JSON, I have to change the return type to string, then how do I access objects in my javascript? The way things are now, I can use samples array and access each object and its properties as I normally would in any OOP code, which is very convenient, and everything works no problem, but I just wanted to make sure that I am not missing anything in my set up. I took the basics of combining Jquery's ajax with asp.net from Encosia side, and the response type wasn't mentioned there - I read it on another site and am I not sure how vital it is.

• PDF hyperlinks on iPhone/iPad

  Hi, I've been looking around Google and SO and haven't quite found an answer to my question, or at least a more recent answer. I have a PDF with hyperlinks/hotspots in it and would like to display the PDF file in my own iPhone/iPad app. When the user clicks on a hyperlink/hotspot I would like the user to be taken to the appropriate location of the link (whether another page on the PDF or a webpage outside of the app). I have found many questions like this on here, but most dated over 6 moths ago. While that might not be so long ago, it kind of is in-spite of newer technologies and the probability of someone comping up with new code/way to do it. I looked into the QuartzDemo sample app and edited the PDF to have a hotspot and it does not work. Maybe the ability is there, but not implemented? I have found one app that DOES work great! The GoodReader app displays my PDF and allows the clicking of hotspots in my PDF. However, I'd like this implemented in my own app. So, has anyone been playing around with this? Anyone find a solution? Can anyone point others in a direction? Thanks for your time.

So cyclical references are now a problem in Silverlight, so I try change my DataContract to be [DataContract(IsReference=true)] but now when I try to retrieve an object from my service I get the following exception: System.ExecutionEngineException was unhandled Message=Exception of type 'System.ExecutionEngineException' was thrown. InnerException: Any ideas?

• Spring Security: session expiration without redirect to expired-url?

  I'm using Spring Security 3.0.2 form based authentication. But I can't figure out how I can configure it so that when a session expires that the request is not redirect to an other page (expired-url) or displays a 'session expires' message. I don't want any redirect or messages, I want that a anonymous session is started just like when a user without a session enters the website. Can I name or create a reference to my gridview either from c# or XAML so I can use the above code? • Write-only collections in MongoDB

  I'm currently using MongoDB to record application logs, and while I'm quite happy with both the performance and with being able to dump arbitrary structured data into log records, I'm troubled by the mutability of log records once stored. In a traditional database, I would structure the grants for my log tables such that the application user had INSERT and SELECT privileges, but not UPDATE or DELETE. Similarly, in CouchDB, I could write a update validator function that rejected all attempts to modify an existing document. However, I've been unable to find a way to restrict operations on a MongoDB database or collection beyond the three access levels (no access, read-only, "god mode") documented in the security topic on the MongoDB wiki. Has anyone else deployed MongoDB as a document store in a setting where immutability (or at least change tracking) for documents was a requirement? What tricks or techniques did you use to ensure that poorly-written or malicious application code could not modify or destroy existing log records? Do I need to wrap my MongoDB logging in a service layer that enforces the write-only policy, or can I use some combination of configuration, query hacking, and replication to ensure a consistent, audit-able record is maintained?

• CultureInfo on a IValueConverter implementation

  When a ValueConverter is used as part of a binding, one of the parameters to the Convert function is a System.Globalization.CultureInfo object. Can anyone tell me where this culture object gets its info from? I have some code that formats a date based on that culture. When i access my silverlight control which is hosted on my machine, it formats the date correctly (using the d/MM/yyyy format, which is set as the short date format on my machine). When i access the same control hosted on a different server (from my client machine), the date is being formatted as MM/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss - which is totally wrong. Coincidentally the regional settings on the server are set to the same as my client machine. This is the code for my value converter: public object Convert(object value, Type targetType, object parameter, System.Globalization.CultureInfo culture) { if (value is DateTime) { if (parameter != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(parameter.ToString())) return ((DateTime)value).ToString(parameter.ToString()); else return ((DateTime)value).ToString(culture.DateTimeFormat.ShortDatePattern); } return value; } basically, a specific format can be specified as the converter parameter, but if it isn't then the short date pattern of the culture object is used.
